Core 2 Quad & late MacBook Pro

Hi all! Really glad to be here as an all new Mac user - got my MacBook Pro just four days ago and already I start wondering where to go from here.
See, its probably 2-4 months from here until Apple is going to introduce a quad core MacBook Pro. It also makes sense to sync this event with the introduction of Snow Leopard, whenever that will be.
So I was wondering: Would it be possible for the current line of MacBook Pro's (such as mine) to be upgraded with a Core 2 Quad CPU in, say, late 2009 / early 2010 (when prices are more reasonable)?
What do you guys think? I know, Apple is pretty restrictive about upgrading MacBook hardware.
What's more, I don't know much about the guts of the MBP, especially w/ regard to the CPU - logic board - business. Maybe if I did, I wouldn't ask this question.
So, is it technically possible? Will it be officially supported? Tell me your opinion.

Speculation on this board is a no-no so there's no point in debating when/whether apple will do a quad core laptop
Your second question is an easy one, there's no way now or in the future to upgrade a laptops cpu. What you buy is what you get, and there's not much else you can do other then upgrade the ram and HD.

The Mid-2007 model didn't come out until June 2007, so you must have bought an earlier model. It won't run Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.x), but it might run Lion (10.7.x) if you can get hold of a copy, depending on which earlier model it is.
Lion requires at least a Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The first MacBook Pros came out in January 2006, but they had "Core Duo" processors (no "2"). The Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros came out in October 2006. You could have bought either in March 2007.

  • External disks (Firewire/USB) won't boot in late Macbook Pro 2013, but do work in earlier Mac's. How to fix it?

    Hi
It always worked, till now. If I sell a Apple notebook because I bought a new one, I make a clone with CCC and with Command-R or Choose Startup disk I say to the new machine: now eat this, here's my old stuff.
It's a great way of upgrading to a new machine. But.. my late Macbook Pro 2013 (Retina, 16 Gb) doesn't allow me to boot from any of my disks: not Firewire, not USB 2.0 and not USB 3.0 (Imagine how many hours I lost to find this out). Btw, the disk image did boot on ANY OTHER Mac, besides the late Macbook Pro 2013.
In some threads, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5499231?tstart=0, it's suggested that it has to do with a special Maverick that doesn't allow older "machines" to be booted from USB.
Anyway, here I am with a tremendous problem. Got my files safe in a clone, but my machine doesn't allow me to boot from it. Btw, out of desperation I tried to use the Migration Assistant, but that made a mess of Adobe versions.
Is there any workaround? How do I get the files + system files from my USB / Firewire disk to my Macbook Pro?

I took the precaution to update my old Macbook Pro to the same Maverick version and EFF as my new one. The problem is rooted somewhere in the special version (and not the Combo) of Maverick.
Now I need something to outwit this. Gonna try to make an image of the clone, deleting a version file and than feed it once more. Will post the results here.

  • Late MacBook Pro's built in iSight acting weird (goes thru color cycle)

I got my late MacBook Pro 2.4, and it was all good, and during one of my iChat video conferences the other person informed me that my video was acting strange. It was going through a color cycle (green, red, yellow, etc), you could see my image but it would cycle through each color very very fast and non-stop.
I had the unit replaced, got the new one, and it all seemed perfect, until last night, the color cycle started up for about 3 seconds and stopped again. What could be the problem? Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be a software thing?
    Thanks.

I had the same problem. After a few seconds of the color cycle it would go to black. This was on any program using the iSight including Skype, Photo Booth and iChat.
They replaced my display/iSight and it's fine now.

  • Slow wireless connection 802.11n AEBS and Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro

I have three Macs all currently connected wirelessly to the new 802.11n AEBS.
    Mac #1 - PowerMac G5
Mac #2 - 17" MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo
Mac #3 - 15" MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo
The wireless connection speed (when using the web browser) is fine for both Mac #1 and Mac #2 but noticable slower for Mac #3. All three Macs are sitting right next to each other. All three Mac are getting an excellent signal. All three Macs are running the same version of the OS. All three Macs have identical network setting (as far as I can tell).
When connecting Mac #3 to the AEBS via an ethernet cable, performance is good. I've also tried configuring the channel manually in the AEBS to channel #1 but this did not help (seemed to help others in a different thread). Additionally, I ran the 802.11n enabler and performance was bad both before and after its installation.
Any idea why the Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro would be performing differently?

Ok eveyone. I did some digging and was able to get the network speed back with my Core2Duo machine. I put the Airport Extreme into Bridged mode and connected the Ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports, not the WAN port. After that everything works great. for more information check out this lengthy thread...

    and this site mentioned...

Apparently the new base stations have a few issues that need to be worked out so I'd consider this a workaround. There should be no reason to have to do this. Good luck.

  • Replacing/Upgrading the 15" 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro HDD?

I was wondering if it is possible to replace the 15" 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro HDD from a 5400 RPM to a 7200 RPM. I plan on recording using Logic Pro so I will most likely need a faster hard drive. If so, what are some good, compatible hard drives to look into.
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

As asked here perhaps 1000 times a day, and findable
with a simple search you can, but you can void your
warranty if you don't do it right and there is some
work involved. Spare the grief and get an external
drive with a fast 2.5" drive in it and add to your
capacity the entire value vs. the difference.
It is very tiring to see you respond to everyone who asks this question with "get an external drive". I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who want more storage WITHOUT having to tote extra gear around.
Yes external drives are useful, but they don't answer the question asked.

  • What is the latest Mac OS X that I can run on my 2.33 GHZ Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro?

My MBP was running the fan almost constantly and otherwise acting odd so I decided to just refresh the installation from scratch. At that time I was running Lion 10.7.5. Before rebuilding everything with that version I want to make sure running Lion on this machine isn't contributing to my issue.
What is the latest Mac OS X that I can run on my 2.33 GHZ Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro?
I have every OS release since the original purchase so I can rebuild on the one that's most stable on this laptop.

You can run Mt. Lion if you so wish:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you want the most efficient OS, I would suggest Snow Leopard.
However I suggest doing some investigation prior to installing a new OS.  First do a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Also run an Apple Hardware Test.  Use the #2 disk on your original install disk.
If there is no improvement, post back.
    Ciao.

i m havind 15inch 2011 late macbook pro lap i7 processor 8gb ram 1tb hdd can i use avid media composer and final cut pro in this specifications?

Can't speak about avid, since I am not familiar with the software.
You can certainly use FCP X on that machine. It should work better if you use a fast external drive for your media and projects.
There is a free trial, so try it out and see how it goes. You should also follow some good video tutorials, if you are not familiar with the application. FCP X is a lot different from Avid, Premiere or even Final Cut Pro 7.

I have a (brand new refurb) 17" 2.6Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. The wireless drops down to null every minute. My old G4 Powerbook works better connection wise. Could there be a problem with the strength capability of the MacBook Pro?

  • Do the Core i5/i7 MacBook Pros use UEFI 2.x?

I have read on hardforum (http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1035720601&postcount=8) that the new Core i5/i7 MacBook Pros use UEFI 2.x, meaning that Windows 7 64-bit can be installed in UEFI/GPT mode. Is that true? Can somebody show some graphical evidence (picture or screenshot of a firmware probe) to suggest the same or otherwise?

If you do some investigation on the internet and search for hinge problem on Macbook Pro you will reveal that thousands of people have problems with their weak Macbook Pro display hinges. The problem causes the displays to flop about in use. If you angle the unit on your lap then the display falls towards you. It's unusable in bed on my lap.
I took my new Macbook Pro to the Apple store in Regent Street today and explained at genius bar that my wife just bought a new macbook pro and that hers doesn't have this problem. He said that the hinges will loosen over time and she will have the same problem. He also said that they could send mine in for repair to tighten the hinges but that they would probably loosen again. He said that I would be without my laptop for 2-3 weeks.
Apple's position on this design flaw is frustrating. It is clear that you would never implement a new design that is worse than previous designs and that they have overlooked this problem. Just admit it Apple!

  • New Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro

So Apple released a higher spec MBP within a year of launching the MBP, and the new MBP costs less too. This is a bit sore for me, even though I have been using my MBP a lot since April when I bought it.
Now the entry level MBP comes with 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo, 120GB HDD(50% more), 1 GB RAM (again 50% more than the 1.83GHz MBP) and the DVD writer is now dual layer. All these upgrades in 6 months of my purchase. I felt a bit shortchanged.
I got some freebies, like a free upgrade to 1GB RAM plus some accessories, when I bought my MBP but none can compensate for the newer specs at lower price. The next time I buy a Mac, I am going to squeeze more freebies of the retailer to guard against such drastic upgrades.
It seems like Mac products obsolete at a much faster pace after the switch to Intel chips. Anyone from the PowerPC, Motorola or IBM chips era know whether the non-Intel powered Macs have longer lifespan?
MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1.83Ghz, 1GB RAM, No Dual Layer DVD Writer
MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1.83Ghz, 1GB RAM, No Dual Layer DVD Writer

I can't believe some people are complaining about the launch of a new MBP with Core 2 Duo's powering them!
The iMac was upgraded to Core 2 Duo around a month or so ago, this was a big give away folks, so anybody buying an MBP after the iMac upgrade must have no deductive reasoning or lives in a box (with no internet access).
Tan Kia, what do you expect? Technology to remain in one place, never to move on and never improve? Do you read the discussion threads on here? People have been talking about Core 2 Duo machines from about May or June onwards (if not before that).
If you were so interested in the Intel Mac's why not shimmy over to Intel's website, they explain in detail where they're planning to move their technologies to and even give a time frame for the release of these new technologies, like for example a Quad Core Xeon in January 2007 - hold on to your hats Mac Pro owners - are you going to feel cheated too? Knowing this I still bought a Mac Pro. Will I feel cheated when the quad core beast is unleashed? Nope. The current one is way fast enough for my needs. If it starts to slow down and ceases to perform (which could take years), then I will replace it with a faster more powerful machine. It's the best in it's class at present and a joy to use, as I'm sure your MacBook Pro is.
I held off buying a MBP as soon as they were first announced because they only had a 32 bit CPU. I checked Intel's site and saw their roadmap for Core Duo. It was obvious that Apple would launch an upgraded MBP with a 64-bit Core 2 Duo at some point before the end of 2006 (and no doubt a quad core before the end of 2007 and so on as processors evolve more and more cores).
The fact is you made a decision to buy a MBP when you did, becuase it suited you then. There's no need to feel sore about your purchase. You have a MacBook Pro, one of the best laptops around (although not as good as the new upgraded MacBook Pro) it still performs well for you.
Apple didn't need to upgrade their PowerPC machines as often, as it was a completely different architecture working differently to x86 based PC's. Now that Apple have (in some people's views) gone to the dark side (Intel x86), Apple are now on the same footing as PC makers.
Intel launch new technologies quickly, PC makers respond quickly. It's always been the way with PC's. If Apple want to compete squarely in the same market as PC's, Mac's run Windows too, they have to lauch new technologies either before or as soon as a competitor does. If they don't, Apple couldn't trumpet their best, fastest, cheaper (as far as direct comparisons go etc) claims.
Just enjoy your computer and be grateful you bought a Mac over a PC.
Everything constantly evolves . . . evolution is the natural order.

  • I have a 2.16 Ghz intel core 2 duo macbook pro

Im trying to purchase Imovie but was unable to due to insufficient memory so I bought more gigs. Now i try to buy it and it says that my video card does not meet the requirements..  what are the requirements and what do i do

Probably, but 2 GB is a paltry amount, and its maximum 3 GB is not much more.
Mac OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion" System Requirements
To install Mountain Lion, you need one of these Macs:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)

Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

  • I have a battery and Memory issue - late macbook pro 2011

Macbook Pro 13" Late 2011 Model
    Battery Issue
After upgrading to Lion, my batter life is 3 hours after full charge. It was 7-8 hours in leopard.
Hoping this is a common issue and someone has a quick solution.
    Memory Issue
I had 4GB Ram and found it would run to virtually nothing and not free any inactive RAM. I though the solution to this was to buy more RAM, which I did.
I now have 8GB RAM and it agains runs to virtually nothing on non labour intensive software like safari or mail. It doesnt free up any RAM when it reaches a certain point. Instead it freezes and I'm forced to restart the computer. I use Final Cut Pro X and Photoshop/Illustrator fairly regualry. I'm assuming the RAM is is used with those but even when these are closed the RAM is low.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

You should take your Mac to an official apple retail store, as it is not common to have these problems regarding battery and memory.
