MacBook 2.0 Core Duo, not the current Core Duo 2 processor. I purchased this unit, refurbished directly from The Apple Store site. It shifted in it's packaging and arrived without any start-up discs. Right away it started to act up. I went through several kernel panics (which I hadn't seen in years) and it would just restart itself at a moment's notice. The restarting thing just kept going on and on. I tried other OS X.4 disks that I had, but they were all rejected. Apple support mailed me a set of disks and they were rejected by the MacBook also. At this point, I needed a computer fast, within 24 hours to send off with my wife on an international journey. I called Apple, told them my situation. I agreed to purchase another MacBook (new, from the local Apple Store) and they agreed to issue an RMA for full credit on the old unit.
The RMA never came. I had the person's name, a ticket number and her direct phone extension. She never returned my calls. I then took it up with American Express which I used to buy the unit. After a lengthy review, AMEX decided that the "bad" MacBook was mine and issued me a full credit. Wow! Except, Apple must really not want this machine back. They caved way too easily.
I asked around, and others mentioned that the original Core Duo MacBooks were "dogs". I kept hearing, "did it just keep restarting on you too?". Was this a knock on these units. The newer, 2.16 MacBook (Core Duo 2) works great. But, I now have a "free" MacBook. Is it worth trying to revive this thing, or are these just "dogs" as I have been told?

I have a core duo bought October 2006. One of the last made, a week 39 unit. I have had one problem with it. The battery was one of the bad batch and Apple replaced it with no problems. It has been one of the best computers I have ever had. I just installed a 320 GB hard drive and with that and Leopard it runs better than ever.

Graphics corrupted / garbled display on Core Duo MacBook Pro (ATI)

My first-generation (Core Duo) MacBook Pro (with ATI chipset) is having video problems.
When this happens, the graphics become corrupted / display becomes garbled and the computer freezes shortly afterwards making it basically unusable. You can just about follow a garbled mouse pointer around, but it is unresponsive.
The only solution is a hard reset (power button for seven seconds).
Has anyone encountered this problem?
At first, I suspected that the computer was overheating as it seemed to occur only after prolonged use - but in the past two days, it could freeze immediately at login screen basically making it completely unusable.
Apple Hardware Test (on original CD) says "No Problems Found", but I still suspect hardware trouble as this only began occuring a week or so after my computer had the left fan replaced (it stopped working after an earlier problem in January at the Apple Store in Highcross Leicester.
I suspect something ELSE is wrong and that it requires service again, so am planning to go to the store in Birmingham on Sunday (which is closer to me -- I went to the Leicester store last time). What should I ask Apple to look at? The graphic corruption occurs even when running right off the Leopard CD, or even on the Apple Hardware Test!

Hi - thanks for your help with the issue. Just as an update, I brought my Mac in for service on the 8th February at the Apple Store Bullring – and oddly, it worked perfectly in the Store. However, I showed them this thread and the pictures they had – and they replaced the logic board and apparently it's one of the costliest parts ever possible to place, shockingly expensive that it's like the cost of a new laptop! However as it's under AppleCare (well, higher education parts and labour warranty) it was covered. Phew!
I got my Mac back today, and so far, it appears to be working perfectly (though as the graphic problems were intermittent, I'm making sure I do backups!), and fingers crossed, I should now have a working Mac once again!

Upgrading from osx 10.5.8 on an older Intel dual core duo macbook?

I have a 2.4 ghz intel core duo macbook with 2GB of 667 mhz ddr2 sdram. I am running osx 10.5.8. Can I upgrade to a higher os version? If so which can I upgrade to? Do I need to go through any interim steps or can I go directly to the latest osx version? Do I need to buy a disk? Or can I download the upgrade?

The model 4,1 Early 2008 MacBook will not be able to run Mountain Lion, but it can run 10.7 Lion. Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store. The price is still $29.
It's mainly the video card. The Models 2,1 through 4,1 have video cards with non-upgradeable 32bit drivers. The model 5,1 Late 2008 and newer have at least the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 64bit drivers. Mountain Lion requires 64bit native drivers. Mountain Lion no longer supports Intel's GMA 950 or GMA X3100 graphics processors.
While Lion used some 32 bit and a lot of 64 bit code, Mountain Lion is pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.

Intel Core Duo MacBook 802.11n

I have a MacBook with Core duo. It can not recieve 802.11n, but I have seen a few different options for upgrading. One of those includes buying a Mac Pro Wireless Kit from apple and installing the card into the MacBook. I found this on the HardMac site. I have talked to almost everyone, but no one can give me a consistent answer. I know if I install the card myself the warranty will be voided no matter what, but if I have an authorized Mac Tech installs it for me will it void the warranty? The other thing is that if an authorized Mac Tech installs most things it will not void the warranty, but my only questionm is, if the Mac Pro card will fit into the MacBook and work while not voiding the warranty?

From what I see you will not void your warranty if your macbook being repair by authorized service center and broken part has been replaced with similar one (within apple specs), not with modified one.
So altered the macbook specs might void your warranty.
To make it clear, consult your apple store, and your authorized technician, and asked your technician that can he or she guarantee that the warranty still good after they di that procedure.
And Core duo macbook age is almost a year old now, and if you don't have apple care, then you just wait couple more weeks and you can operate yours without worry about warranty.
I also seen one site that provide the kit and installation is also included, I'll post it later if I can come accross.

I cannot say it for sure since 10.5.x is not released yet and only apple insider that might already try it on original macbook.
But based on my experience upgrade from 8 to 9 to os X 10.1, up to 10.4, apple os will backward compatible several version or product line before.
And considering yours is still the active product line version 1 of 2, good chance your macbook will run 10.5.x flawlessly too.

Will hard drive from a core duo macbook work in a core 2 duo macbook? (both white macbooks)

I want to replace my 1.83ghz core duo macbook.
Can I put the hard drive from this macbook into another macbook with a 2.4ghz core 2 duo processor?
The 1.83ghz is a white macbook. The 2.4ghz is also a white macbook.
Will it work okay this way?
I am trying to avoid doing a complete re-install.

While the two macbooks take the same hard drive(SATA), the core 2 duo will most likely have a larger hard drive(unless you replaced the original drive in your Core Duo).
Also, you cannot boot the Core 2 Duo computer with a drive from a Core Duo unless you reformat the drive and install OS X from the disks that came with the Core 2 Duo.

Is there an E-SATA connect on my 2.16 Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro?

I've suddenly got to work with an E-SATA setup. I'm using the USB port right now ... but have been told the E-SATA would run smoother, faster. ??? This is to edit a film on the fly. I've been given the data on a naked drive plugged into a black box that gives me either USB or E-SATA.

Any SATA 3.5" drive will connect to you PowerMac G5 or Mac Pro.
SATA 2.5" drives either need a PCI-SATA card or a Firewire SATA case to connect to a PowerMac G5 or Mac Pro.
Mind you a drive formatted on a MacBook Pro will not boot a PowerMac G5, but might boot some Mac Pros if the Mac Pro is able to run the said operating system. See this article on which operating systems each Mac can run:

Usually though, moving drives from one machine to the next simply makes user data transfer quicker, and is not a way to migrate applications or operating systems. This can get real sticky going between PowerPC and Intel Macs as this migration tip explains:

Maximum HDD capacity for Core Duo MacBook?

With both OS X and Windows installed, I'm running out of space with the 80GB HDD my Core Duo (not Core 2) MB came with and I'd like to replace the original drive with the 200GB drive that the new MacBook Core 2 Duo can be ordered configured with. But I was told by a person at the local (non-Apple) Mac store that the Core Duo MB, unlike the Core 2 Duo MB, has a storage limit of "120 or 160 GB, I think".
This does not make sense to me. One would think that the addressable storage limit is a function of the OS, the CPU, and the bus width, not affected by a relatively minor (?) difference in CPU details. He acknowledged that although the physical form factor of the 200GB drive is the same as that of the 80GB (after first thinking that the phrase "physical form factor" meant a functional limit, thus calling his expertise into serious question), there is some sort of functional limit. He cited the example of the G4 desktop, which can hold 2TB of storage as 4x500GB HDDs, but that if equipped with 4x750GB drives, still recognizes only 2TB. I think this limit is a result of the basic architecture of the CPU and buses. To further muddy the waters, he said there's a limit on the size of the internal HDD even though a much bigger outboard HDD can be recognized "because the internal drive is wired right into the computer". This sounds really bogus to me, but I'm not quite confident enough that I'm ready to order that 200GB internal SATA HDD from Other World.
Can I go ahead and order the 200GB and know the whole thing will be recognized?

According to the specs - the 200G should work. Like First Magnus said - 200G drives are fairly new - heck, 120G SATA drives are fairly new for laptops. Look around - you should find something. Newegg has them one (Toshiba) for $259.00. With them being new, they'll be tougher to find, so the net is probably you're best choice right now. I know the local stores around here don't carry them yet. Best of luck...

I would like to buy OS X Lion and install it on my MacBook Pro with 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo, but this processor is not in the list of the specifications (Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 or Xeon processor).
Is it really true that I can't install Lion on my Mac? If so, what is the reason?

It has to be a Core 2 Duo. Those are the requirements for Lion.
Requires a newer Mac.

Logic Pro X compatibility with mbox 2 mini and 2009 core duo macbook

I currently have Pro Tools LE 8.0.3 and an Mbox2 Mini, both of which amazingly still work on Mountain Lion 10.8.4. I'm interested in learning Logic and am trying to confirm compatitility with the Mbox2 Mini on a first generation core duo Aluminum Macbook (2.4 Ghz) running 4gb of RAM. The system requirements just say 10.8.4 or later with a 64 bit processor. The Macbook runs fine, and I primarily just record stereo piano tracks, so it's not like I'm going to have 16 tracks running on it. Anyone using an Mbox2 Mini, and any issues with the hardware?

It's not an external device's compatibility with LPX that matters...
It's your external hardware's compatibility with whatever OS X version you are using to run LPX in.... that is important.
Im guessing you upgraded OS X about the same time you switched to LPX?

Note: Why is it showing Duet and not Quartet briefly? Are you sure you installed the correct drivers or did you, at one time have a Duet?
Additional: You might want to try this.. though I doubt it will fix things... but this can cure all kinds of weird issues...
Delete both the main plist and the CS file...
Delete the user preferences
You can resolve many issues by restoring Logic Pro X back to its original settings. This will not impact your media files. To reset your Logic Pro X user preference settings to their original state, do the following:
Quit Logic Pro
In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
Press the Go button.
Remove the com.apple.logic10.plist file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro X User Manual for details on how to do this. If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro X, then you may also wish to delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
Restart the computer.
Note: if you cannot find either of these files you didn't follow the instructions exactly as described

Core duo macbook pro HDD upgrade

I have an early 15" MacBook Pro, model A1150, with a core duo processor. The original hard drive is an 80 GB model and is nearly full. I'd like to upgrade to a 7200 rpm drive with more capacity, but am unsure if i can take advantage of a newer SATA drive such as a 3GB or 6GB. Can I do this, or should I try to locate a SATA 1.5 drive?

It says my camcorder is compatible but i still get crashes, especially on any movie over 20 minutes or more. Is my 2 gig of ram to blame? I can go to 3gig max. Would a Solid State Drive help? my current drive is 120gig. Should i move all of my other files to my external hard drive? I was thinking about getting a 240gig Solid state drive from crucial. any ideas on this or any other upgrades.

New/old HD for Core Duo macbook

     In my Macbook Core Duo, I had an original 80GB Harddrive, that I filled up. I replaced the HD with a 500GB Harddrive a couple of years ago. Recently the 500GB HD has failed. I got the spining clear wheel during startup at the Apple screen, and never got to a login screen. Disk Utility said the drive had failed. But, when started with old 80GB HD (in an external enclosure), the 500GB drive is operable, and I seem to be able to acess the 500GB drive from the 80GB drive. Therefore, I am not certain the 500GB is completely kaput.
     I have now installed the old 80GBHD, physically into the laptop and I am up and running again; while I figure out what is going on with the 500GB drive. Luckily I have everything backed up, and no data has been lost. The newly working 80GB Macbook will now be used as a secondary, family and kids, computer. The Start-Up Disk is OS 10.4.6; the 80 GB currently is OS 10.5.8; the 500GB HD is up to OS 10.6.8.
     My question is: Should I delete the data on the 80GB HD and use the original OS install disc to start factory fresh? OR, should I not delete anything, because deleting data won't help anything? Do I lose all my updated OS's? Am I able to restore the OS upgrades somehow, or do I lose them when I use the original start up disk? Does deleting all the music and photos on the 80GB help the system run easier? Or is that a misconception of mine, that deleting data will improve overall computer performance. I have a new MacMini that is my primary system. Thanks for reading this and for your advice. Please tell me the best way to utilize my older laptop and what OS to start from. Thanks again. Overalll performance can improve if there is at least 15% of the hard drive free. You won't be able to install either 10.7 or 10.8 on that Macbook since it is not a Core2Duo.

Why did Apple exclude Intel Core Duo Macbook from Lion compatibility?

I own Macbook with Intel Core Duo. I just discovered that I cannot install OSX 10.7 (Lion) on this Macbook. Why did Apple exclude this system?

Some MacMini 1.83s had Intel Core 2 Duo's, are you sure about that being a Core Duo?
