Corrupt MBR on Yoga 2 Pro - Need advice

Hi,
I have tried to install dual-boot on my Lenovo Yoga 2 pro, but unsuccessfully. Once I gave up on the idea, I rebooted and Windows woudn't start, instead I am getting the following error:
Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed.
Insert Recovery Media and Hit any key
Then Select 'Boot Manager' to choose a new Boot Device or to Boot Recovery Media
(If I disable UEFI, then I get "Missing operating system")
Unfortunately I don't have a recovery disc.
According to a third-party repair tool I have on a USB, the MBR is corrupted, and all attempts at using the command prompt returned "command not found" (as the same 3rd party suggested I run "chkdsk C: /f") . Since the computer is new, I have no problem if all memory is wiped (there was hardly anything on it), but I'd really like to return to my original Windows configuration. Unfortunately, without any recovery disc, and as I don't have a product key for win 8.1, I'm not sure what are my options.
Any advice or suggestion, anyone?
Thanks!
Solved!

If you repaired the MBR and it will not boot this AM I would just take it back and exchange it. Chances are very good there is a problem with the harddrive.

  • About to purchase new Mac Pro - Need Advice

I am about to purchase a new mac pro and have some questions
I am planning to use final cut pro as well as Edius on Boot Camp.
I intend to edit footage in HDV from a sony Z1 and also from the new sony - pmw -ex3 which i will be planning to edit in HD and 24p.
    1) the default config for the mac pro is dual 2.8.ghz processors, what advantage gain will i get i upgrade to 3.0 or 3.2, is the extra power worth the money? will this give me more real-time editing
How many layers of HD 1920 x 1080 from the sony pmw-ex3, will i be able to edit in FCP 6.0 without any problems? would you advise more ram
    2) i prefer to work from RAID 5 drives and keep system drive separate, this is how i have worked on in PC/Windows environment. Can anyone confirm if i can have one JBOD drive for the system and 3 drives configured as a RAID 5 drive?
Will i be able to use a boot to run windows and also be able to use the RAID 5 drive on windows side?
    3) Is anyone using the 3ware RAID 5 side car? what is experienece is this compatible on the windows partition from boot camp
    4) How will i be able to preview HD footage?
    5) Do i need to invest in a better Graphics
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    Here are a few answers.
    1. The Mac Pro 2.8 GHz model performs so well that it is difficult to justify paying 28% more for 7% of additional processor power in the case of the Mac Pro 3.0 GHz or 56% more for 14% additional processor power with the Mac Pro 3.2 GHz model. You might see a small 5-10% increase in performance when compressing video with the 3.2GHz model but it certainly would not be worth paying 50% more to me. In addition, Amazon has the 2.8 on sale for $2599 after an easy rebate:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000VR4F2Q/arizomacinusergr
That is a $200 savings off the retail price.
    2. If you want to use boot camp I would NOT recommend the Apple RAID card. Boot camp does not work with this card which leaves you wondering why you bought the card and how to get around this HUGE limitation. Instead, I would recommend the Areca ARC-1221x, HighPoint RR 3522 or the ARC-1680x if you want a SAS card. All of these cards have new firmware available that provide awesome performance and boot capability with the Mac Pro 2008. I would also get a SeriTek/2eEN4 4-bay and 1TB Samsung HDs. This gives a solid, quiet 4-bay enclosure that can support RAID 5 with any of the cards and you can add a second enclosure later if you want to use all eight external ports with RAID 6 (for added redundancy and increased volume size). This leaves the internal bays available for Boot Camp, Mac OS X, backups or mirrors and provides RAID 5/6 capability that can be configured to perform almost twice as fast as the Apple RAID card and provide double the redundancy with RAID 6. 3. The 3Ware RAID 5 card is not a top pick in the Macintosh market. The options outlined above will provide much better performance and RAID 6 capabilities.
    4. You can view the the HD footage on the monitor.
    5. You may want a better graphics card but I would try the stock card first. I was surprised how well the ATI radeon HD 2600 XT card performs with Apple applications.
    Have fun!

  • Need advice on on a Mac Pro 1,1 Media Center

I currently have a 2009 Mac Mini running as my home media center, but I recently came by a FREE Mac Pro 1,1 and have decided to repurpose it as my media center so I can migrate my Mac Mini to my bedroom TV where it will live an easy life doing nothing but run Plex Home Theater, Netflix, and EyeTV. This machine falling into my lap was also quite timely because my 4-bay Drobo is running low on available expansion and another Drobo isn't in the budget at the moment.
This vintage mac pro is running Lion 10.7.5, has 1 old and crusty 500GB hardrive, dual x5160 processors, 4GB RAM (one stick i'm pretty sure is toast judging by the red light and the kernel panics), and the standard NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB graphics card. It will be used primarily for the following: network storage for iphoto and itunes libraries, streaming video, Plex Media Server & Plex Home Theater, and Handbrake encoding. I also have a goal of safety of data for my movies, photos and music as this machine will supplement my current Drobo storage.
My plans are for a 128GB SSD boot drive installed in one of the PCIe slots and then to load up all 4 of the 3.5" drive bays with WD Green hard drives. I have also ordered 4GB of replacement RAM, so upon removal of the faulty unit I will have 7GB.
Here is where I need advice because I am not very familiar with RAID and the differences between hardware or software raid. Am I better off getting four drives of the same size and setting them up as RAID 5 (I think) using Apple's RAID utility or should I throw in three 1TB drives and then install a fourth 3TB or 4TB drive as a Time Machine backup for the other three?
Should I upgrade the OSX to the technically unsupported latest version? Or is it not worth the trouble for this application?
Also, is there any benefit to upgrading the graphics card to the ATI Radeon 5770? Would this yield an improved image quality? I am outputting to a Denon AV Reciever and subsequently to a 100" projection screen, if that makes a difference. I also noticed the 5770 has an HDMI port, wich would be nice, but not necessary since I can use a DVI converter and woud still need to use the optical audio out anyway.
    Much obliged for any input

My plans are for a 128GB SSD boot drive installed in one of the PCIe slots and then to load up all 4 of the 3.5" drive bays with WD Green hard drives. I have also ordered 4GB of replacement RAM, so upon removal of the faulty unit I will have 7GB.
PCIe cards that use or support SSD are not bootable until you get to 2008 (and that is limited too).
Green are not suited for any form of array unless say NAS and WD RED.  Better option would be 3 x 2TB WD Blacks in a mirror, and too many people only use two drives, well 3 is much easier safer and works better. Might want to invest in www.SoftRAID.com product even.
Best price and quality, got my 1,1 with 8 x 2GB (ideal is 4 or 8 DIMMs)
    2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz @ $25
    http://www.amazon.com/BUFFERED-PC2-5300-FB-DIMM-APPLE-Memory/dp/B002ORUUAC/
With price of 250GB SSD $155 I'd go with that or stick with $89 for 128GB .

  • Just need a lousy screw for a yoga pro!

One of the screws fell out of the back of my yoga pro and lenovo's absolutely WORTHLESS website is of absolutely NO VALUE in assisting!  The "support center" poput won't connect. The "find service provider" popup won't connect. Would it really be all that difficult to simply list the providers by state on a SIMPLE webpage somewhere? I also need whatever weird screwdriver is required -- is there something wrong with a phillips head screw? Does Lenovo enjoy making more complicated than it already is?

    That's really sad.
    Use some liquid Lock-tite.
    Works great.

  • I need advice after purchasing a MacBook Pro in the USA for use in the UK.

    Hello all out there,
I bought a 13 inch MacBook Pro in the USA last week and brought it back with me to the UK. I had been given an Apple World Adapter kit by the gentleman in the apple store, however I realised today that it isn't for the MacBook Pro and is only for iPads, iphones and ipods. This means that despite paying around $40, I am stuck. I need advice as to how to charge the laptop in the UK now? Is there an adapter for this or can I use any ordinary USA to UK adapter and stick it to the one I have from the USA?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Zainab

AFAIK, the World Adapter kit has a replacement PLUG for the power brick. What you need is just something that can go into your country's wall socket, as the power brick itself is universal and can work from 100-240 VAC, 50-60 Hz.
In other words, you ARE aware that the power brick has removable plugs on the AC end, right?

  • Yoga Pro 3 - Wifi dropped connections; refuses to reconnect

First day of owning my Yoga Pro 3. Has anyone experienced intermittent wifi failures?
I've had trouble on both access points that I have at home. One is an older 802.11b router (set to channel 1), and other a D-Link815 dual-band bgn router (with the 2.4Ghz radio set to channel 11).
I've experienced problems using both routers on either channel and when using the 5Ghz spectrum as well.
Connectivity with either access point lasts from 5 mins to 30+ mins (in limited time I had available to use it so far).
Far more frustrating is that when dropped, the YP3 refuses to reconnect. Manually selecting the access point in the network connections charm and clicking "Connect" results in failed attempts at connecting and system will refuse to connect to any Access Point for a random amount of time. At one point I had attempted to reconnect about 20+ times before it did reconnect.
Obviously, tried rebooting without any change in behavior.
I uninstalled the Broadcom wireless driver (the system the auto-installed a Microsoft driver which, from the version number, appeared to be an older version of the same Broadcom driver as they used a very similar numbering scheme and were very close). No change. I reverted that change.
Are there known issues with these wifi cards/drivers accessing open wifi connections? I live in the middle of no-where, so have had no compelling reason to secure the access points.
    What else should I try?
    Thanks

My WiFi connects fine @ 2.4 GHz only Access Point (netgear wnr2000 v2) 4 rooms away (~ 35 feet and my Linksys router is on the same room as me so I get 866.5 Mbps all the time), giving me fluctuating connection speed from 243 to 300 Mbps. I generally don't use the 2.4 GHz band but I occasionally try it to check for stability. It's working fine but there's too much 2.4 GHz clients in our area so I use 5 GHz for Netflix, Hulu steaming where low latency stability is needed.
Definitely try reseating the antenna so you can rule that out. If you still can't connect @ 2.4 GHz, try other 2.4 Ghz access points or it's just that you get a defectve Broadcom 4352 card or it might be even Windows 8.1 drivers itself.

  • Ready to install fresh win 8.1 on new Yoga Pro 2

So, I just got my yoga pro 2 Friday. Can't stand the extra stuff and 7 particians.
I've got a usb stick with a copy of win 8.1 on it. I can boot to it and get the windows installer started ( I stopped at the partiican table)
I got the drivers folder from the D: on the yoga backed up.
Got my win 8.1 pro product key written down.
Don't think I will need any of the lenovo apps.
Nothing else I need, right?  I did actually make a system image of the fresh install on another external drive when I got it, so if i did need to go back, I can.
The windows installer will take care of all partiicans, correct? I'm new to EUFI boot.  I can see that legacy mode is disabled in the bios now.
Thanks for any help. Looking forward to a clean install.  Wish I could have gotten this from a MIcrosoft store instead so I don't have to deal with it.

  • Need Advice On Using A New Firewire Enclosure

Just bought an external Firewire enclosure. I'll install either a Maxtor 250G HD or the original/shipped Quantum 20G in the enclosure.
I'd appreciate advice on when and when not to turn on or unplug the enclosure, OS installation, etc, etc. Will it show in Startup Disk Prefs and just boot to it when chosen? The Quantum has been my backup HD but it's corrupted at the moment and needs to be erased. It's a toss-up on which will be ext and which will be int. I'd like to utilize the capacity of the Maxtor, but I'm loath to use the Quantum as my 'main' OS drive. Thoughts?
And just some basic tips on using external enclosures would be most welcome!

do not ever hot swap firewire devices, ever. basically, put your harddrive in the enclosure, make the connections and then turn it on. use disk utility to format the drive, no matter what it is, even if it's fresh outta the box and claims to already be mac formatted. do that and it should mount automatically. when you want to turn off the drive, always always always eject it from the desktop (command-E) and then you can safely turn it off and unplug. when you want to remount it, plug it in if unplugged, turn on the enclosure and it'll mount on the desktop automatically.
i buy bare drives and stick them enclosures from OWC and i always follow these procedures and they've never let me down with so much as a hiccup. good luck.

  • Yoga Pro 2 - Display not recognized in windows (Driver or Hardware issue?)

Out of warranty by a month!
Yoga Pro 2 - 256gb, installed new wireless card a month ago. Windows 8.1
The touchscreen still works while the screen is black.
System restarted after sleep mode I think.
The Lenovo logo is displayed, seems to load windows, but when windows loads (I don't see it load so this is an assumption) the screen blanks and the black light is on.
I can connect an external monintor which will connect after a return from sleep mode(odd). Which then turns the backlight off.
When on the external monitor the internal display is not even recognized by windows.
When I boot in safe mode, the internal screen works fine with of course limited capability.
I have reloaded display drivers from the support site.
Right now my internal monitor is not recognized by windows and is dark, and I can use an external monitor.
Anyone have any clues as to what my be going on? Hardware, driver etc???
    What information can I provide?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

This is a pretty weird issue with conflicting observations.
    1) Screen works in Safe Mode but not in regular boot. (So, not hardware issue)
    2) Display works on external monitor in regular mode. (So, not drivers issue)
Did you install the wireless card yourself? Did you unplug the display cable while installing the card?
Could you re-open and check that all connections are good?
Is the Wi-Fi card working well?
I would also recommend a complete reset of the laptop to eliminate the possibility that this is a corrupt driver. You can use the NOVO button to reset your laptop. Make sure to make a backup on external drive for your personal files.

  • Major Issues with installing 4tb internal. Really need advice please

In the process of a long needed upgrade to my 2010 Mac Pro Quad core 2.8 and have run into a serious headache that I really need advice on so I can get back to work. I've already spent 2 days dealing with all of this...
Just did a new SSD install and Migration which went fine but I'm also updating the rest of the internal drives. My main (non boot) drive was being upgraded from a Seagate Barracuda 3tb to a 4th Deskstar NAS (it was showing as compatible with my desktop, see links below). My 3tb ran fine for years but now due to it being heavily used I want to switch to a new drive and I can also use a bit more space.
The issue I'm running into is that initially on boot, my system was telling me it couldn't recognize the disk and it wasn't even showing up in Disk Utility. I had to purchase a SATA USB 3 kit to attach it as an external to get it to show which worked without problem. With the USB kit I was then able to partition it (GUID, Mac OS extended journaled) and format it properly. After reinserting the drive into my tower as an internal it failed to show again. After a few attempts of restarts and trying various bays it popped up but showed as a non formatted drive and I was told again that the system didn't recognise it. I was then given the option to initialise and was then actually able to then format and partition it though Disk Utility while it was installed as an internal.
Figured that was problem solved but when I went to check the drive and getting ready to transfer files over I noticed that Disk Utility was only allowing the First Aid and Partition options but not Erase, RAID, Restore which I'd never seen before. I then also noticed that none of the drive connection info was in the same format nor will it even provide drive bay info, connection info or read/write status (See screen shots). This is what I can't figure out and really need to clarify before I put full trust into using this drive.
Any info would be greatly appreciated...
Deskstar 4tb internal info which is installed in Bay 2
3tb Seagate which I trying to retire and transfer from.
Here are the weblinks to the Deskstar 4tb drive and the compatibility list but I support isn't allowing me to add direct links so add the www. before hand.
    (Drive - eshop.macsales.com/item/HGST/0S03664/) (compatibility list - eshop.macsales.com/Descriptions/specs/Framework.cfm?page=macpromid2010.html).

    What OSX version?
Disk Utility in later versions of ML and I think Mavericks have problems formatting with 4 TB internal drives.

  • Doc Project with format confusion- need advice

I have a documentary project with a plethora of footage formats because the doc spans a long length of time and different project collaborators. We just shot more footage and I don't want to move forward converting the new footage until I know the best path to take form here on out. please advise.
    Here is the info.
Below i'm listing the descritption of footage, the format, and the % I'm predicting it will be used in the final edit of the documentary I'm working on.
Archival Footage: DV NTSC 720x480 (10%)
Original footage shot: DV NTSC 720x480 anamorphic (40%)
Additional Footage shot in Summer 2010 with Panasonic HVX200: DVCPRO HD 720p60 29.97 (35% shared with canon 7D footage listed below)
Additional Footage shot in Summer 2010 with Canon 7D: shot 1920x1080 23.98 Apple Pro Res 422, pixel aspect square. I converted this footage to 720p60 29.97 to match the Panasonic footage but I still have the original files saved. (35% shared with hvx200 footage listed above)
New Footage shot with Canon 7D: 1920x1080 23.98 Apple Pro Res 422, pixel aspect square (15%)
    Timelines:
    - I edit the SD footage in timelines with SD sequence settings matching the format of the footage
    - I edit the HD footage in timelines with DVCPRO HD sequence settings matching the format of the footage
    - when footage of both formats ends up in one 'scene' the timeline is DV NTSC 720x480
    - when I output a rough cut, I nested sequences and output DV NTSC 720x480
I have not converted the new footage yet and before I do convert it and then transform continue editing, I feel I need to re-evauluate how I'm approaching the multi-format situation.  I need advice about the best path to take from here on out. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
Should I upconvert the SD footage and do everything HD from now on? The final cut will probably be 50% SD and 50% HD with possibly more HD than SD.
If I do upconvert and go HD, is 720p60 29.97 the best format for me to use considering my footage sources? If you have any ideas, please also explain how you might go about carrying them out.
    Thank you!

Exactly, whic is why I'm seeking advice. the final delivery will be film festival screenings and hopefully broadcast, and considering the channels today that = HD.
That's not a final decision at all, that's a series of delivery options. You must produce your project in the highest resolution for which you have space, codecs and techniucal competency. You will save that as the "final" but I'd not call it that since nothing is ever finalized. Jsut keep naming the versions. Then you will open the full rez version and use any of several conversion or compresiona apps to satisfy all other distribution needs.
The omst flexible will be a 1080/60 format but that decision will cost you tons of conversion time, lots of space, and will require many stylistic decisions along the way.
That's what I would do but I'm not you and I'm not your client.

Longtime Logic user, my old rig running with an Audiowerk 8 card (dont laugh too hard please, its worked great for years! ).
Now, after purchasing a MBP and LE7 ... how best to upgrade even further, to be able to record say 4-8 tracks (live instrument) at a time, into the optical or Firewire ports. I have an external 750Gb FW drive.
Also have a Mackie 16 chnl mixer and hoping to find a way to send the Master stereo pair (or maybe even track inserts) from the Mackie to the optical or FW input of my MBP. But how to do this ? Im guessing there's a box or gizmo somewhere that would be perfect.
Unfortunately, all of the boxes and gizmos Ive looked at so far seem to duplicate functions I already have, esp mic preamps (dont need any more of those !). I prefer 19" rackmount devices as they work well with portability, and fit into my SKB rig easily.
    TIA

if you really want to use the pre's on your mackie, and it has multiple bus/aux outputs which I presume it does, then you can easily set up a device such as the 828 to take all your input channels from the mackie, and then to run a bunch of return pairs back out to it.
depending on your budget there are prob a few others for you to look at. RME and metric halo always get rave reviews from users, but are pricier. also the focusrite sapphire might be worth a look, as well as the apogee ensemble.
also I just noticed you are using logic express, not pro. so there may be some limitations on the number of simultaneous inputs and outputs that I'm unaware of.

  • Any fix for USB 3 port disconnects with Plugable GigE adapter on Yoga Pro 2

    Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a fix intended from lenovo on this?
Very pleased overall with my Yoga Pro 2, however one issue is that I sometimes need to use a GigE adapter and the Plugable USB3-E1000 I bought will disconnect periodically - mainly an issue when using the link heavily.
It is acknowledged by plugable to be an issue:
http://plugable.com/products/usb3-e1000 "There is known conflict with the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro’s USB 3.0 port and the USB3-E1000. Symptoms include sudden loss of connectivity and failing of transferring files across a network. The current workaround is to use the USB 2.0 port. We are working with ASIX and Lenovo to resolve this known bug."
It transmits at about 1.5MB/sec on USB2 and 15MB/sec on USB3 so a clear preference to use USB3!
    Thanks
    Stuart
PS RUnning windows 8. fully patched, have updated BIOS from 1.15 to 1.16

If used an external USB Wifi adapter that worked fine (Asus).
This Linksys should also work in the Yoga.
