Could not initialize Photoshop because of a program error" with PS CC 2014

I get "Could not initialize Photoshop because of a program error" with PS CC 2014 on a 2099 Macbook Pro running Mavericks. Then the program closes. Can anyone help?

Could be corrupt preferences, a problem with the OS font cache, or some other problem with the OS.
First, try resetting the preferences.

I changed my security preferences and still get the same thing poping up.  I am not able to open PS CS5.1 on my mac.
What should I do or even where do I go if I need to re-install CS 5.1? I have my Lic#

I don't think the application installation would be corrupt because I uninstalled and re-installed according to adobe and all the times I did so, it was from adobe website.  and I am thinking about the OS, if that were corrupt, a lot more applications, ... would be giving me problems.
It is only PS. I am almost at wit's end trying to solve this issue. I would have thought re-insatlling program (prob did this about 10 times), would solve any issues.  I did use the cc cleaner but only yesterday as a last resort. I just don't know where to go with this problem.
when 1st happened I just uninstalled and reinstalled a few times and when that didn't solve anything, also then ran utility programs a few times.all the while deleted prefs

  • Can not open photshop CC 2014     ERROR  could not initialize Photoshop because of a program error

    Hi
I can not open Photshop CC 2014
    ERROR
could not initialize Photoshop because of a program error

I've had the same error happen to me.  I deleted the preferences file, updated JAVA, etc.  none of which worked.
I've spent days systematically working to isolate the variable that seems to make Photoshop work one day and "not initialize" the next.  I simply can't afford to stop work when Photoshop doesn't want to initialize due to: PSOWLListenerProxyBaseCocoa.mm : 52 : REQUIRE failed
Apologies, but I REQUIRE YOU TO INITIALIZE!
I think that I've isolated the problem.  I have a dual monitor set-up.  Sometimes I use the second monitor and sometimes I don't, sometimes monitor 2 is powered on and sometimes it's not.  It's really the only thing with any variance on my system.  I disconnected my second monitor.  Then I clicked the Photoshop icon and the program opened...
I am running OS X 10.9 and Photoshop CS 5.1
There appears to be a link between Photoshop not wanting to initialize and Graphics Card / Monitors.

  • CS5 Could not initialize Photoshop because of a program error

Friday I did work as usual editing and cropping images from my PSD files. Over the weekend I did not work but checked email and performed an Apple update, the new one where iPhoto goes away and now I have Photos. Monday I tried to open Photoshop and got the above error. I took my machine to my local expert. He tried deleting preferences and  deleting the settings file. Still I get the error. I created a new user and Photoshop works l fine. This is frustrating. I have searched the web and have tried every solution possible to no avail. Why would performing the latest Apple update screw up Photoshop. I am extremely frustrated. Has anyone found a solution?

Excuse the delay Mioweb. I had to be away for some business, but I hope to stay with this. Seems you got some good technical help as well.
So I'm surprised the update did not work. I might warn you CS5's Help > Update function is outdated. It doesn't play well at all with Adobe's update servers at all and should not be used. I recommend the direct download links I gave you and the manual install.
If you go to Help > System Info  Look at Photoshop Version on the first line, it should be 12.0.4 not 12.0 The update link I gave you is for English, are you using a foreign language edition?
So we could look at third party plugins or Extensions you installed in your account.
Hold down Shift when starting up disables plugins and you can see if that stops the crashes.
You have Extension Manager CS5 Adobe - Exchange : Download the Adobe Extension Manager
And CS5's Extension Manager is now at version 5.0.3 Updates here: Adobe Extension Manager Updates Downloads
Then you can check and uninstall any suspect Extensions.
Printer Drivers can cause problems too. Try seeing if the problem goes away if you uninstall and update them.
While I sure your Tech did a fine job reinstalling your system, If he retrieves your account account from backup and the problem is in there, the problem remains.
So that should be enough for now.

  • Could not initialize Photoshop because of a program error.

This is the first time I've had this problem with photoshop. I'm not sure what to do. I have Adobe CC. I want to unistall it and then reinstall to see that helps but Im not sure how to do that.

Yesssss. I'm hoping I didn't get stiffed too. We shall see. I have now successfully installed on my laptop so that's odd. I opened Even Viewer but it's all Greek to me. Could that be an incorrect Windows language setting . So I'm not sure where to look in that. Can you help any further? I truly appreciate your help.

  • Can't open Photoshop CC.  "could not initialize photoshop because of a program error"

What's the latest fix-it for this.  Many of you have the same issue but there are so many different answers.  Confusing (especially since I am a novice at this).

Do you receive a download or update errors... or does the program install but then will not run?

I bought PS CC yesterday. It's been working fine, including earlier tonight. I closed it and tried to open it again and got the above message. Thank you for your help.

Could be corrupt preferences, a problem with the OS font cache, or some other problem with the OS.

  • Photoshop CC: Could not open Photoshop because of a Program Error. How do I fix this?

Photoshop CC: Could not open Photoshop because of a Program Error.
How do I Make sure your OS X user account has Read & Write access for the following path:
    /Users//Library/Preferences/Adobe

Nobody can tell you anything without proper system info or other technical details like the actual crash logs. From your description it simply sounds like your graphics hardware is acting up, so update the graphics driver. Likewise, you may simply run out of disk space for the PS scratch file, so check that, too.

  • Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is empty.

I tried to start Photoshop 5.1 64bit today, and it shows the blue intro screen with the reading and loading, and then it goes to a popup error message that reads, "Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is empty." I can run the 32bit version fine, but I would prefer to use the 64bit version. I am running Windows 64bit Ultimate. I have been having issues here and there with CS5.5 on this computer. I ran CS4 fine for the last few years, but since after the upgrade, things have been acting weird. About two weeks ago, InDesign refused to work, so I did a reinstall. Then, two days later, I was having other issues, so I did another reinstall. Before that, Illustrator was having issues, so I had to copy programs files from my office computer to my home computer to make it work. I am starting to wonder if my hard drive is going out. Is there an Adobe fix for just Photoshop? I have the CS5.5 installation DVDs here. I tried copying the Photoshop.exe from my office computer to my home computer and replacing it, but it didn't work either.
What do you guys recommend? Thanks!

I am starting to wonder if my hard drive is going out.
Not necessarily, but it could be hopelessly fragmented and have per-sector damage. Run your disk maintenance tools from the drive's property tab and clean out unnecessary temp files, too.

  • CS6 Photoshop reads this when attempting to "Could not initialize Photoshop because the preferences file was invalid (it has been deleted). HELP!

Finally got a call this morning from an Adobe Rep and he explained to me the issue. He explained that I needed to uninstall the adobe product, in this case Photoshop CS6 and download it again and reinstall it! So, I did that and get the same message when attempting to open the newly downloaded software: "Could not initialize Photoshop because the preferences file was invalid (it has been deleted). Please, if someone could help me as soon as possible! I am very anxious to remedy this situation. Thank you!

This seems to have cropped up a lot recently. What has seemed to work so far is intentionally resetting your preferences:
    Reset Preferences
    1) Close the program and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Win)/Cmd+Option+Shift (Mac) during startup (not reversible)
    or
    2) Move the Folder. See:

  • Could not initialize photoshop because there is not enough memory (RAM) CS4

I just recently started receiving this error, "could not initialize photoshop because there is not enough memory (RAM)". So I thought doing an uninstall and a reinstall of Photoshop would cure it. No such luck though. I have 8 gigs of ram, so I hardly think not enough ram is an issue. I have a MacBook Pro, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz, 8GB of ram, 750 GB hard drive. Any ideas?

    Boilerplate-text:
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.
