Cover Flow preview in Finder fails to work

Hello,
I updated recently to  OS X Mavericks, and since i updated there have been problems in the Preview (Cover Flow preview in Finder.
When i open a folder and scroll down items, sometime there are 10 images and in cover flow shows only half and the other half are like not previewing them as they don’t exist in the folder so when i click on list view then gives me just file names i can see full list and open all files big, but the Cover flow is failing to work and desplay preview images - not previewing the correct fles mix, image names, for example i click on file 1 and it shows file 2… when i delate an image from the folder it just keeps a ghost image there so you don’t know if its actually erased, but again when u open in list view mode its ok, or you constantly have to close and reopen the folder to refresh the view in cover flow, so 100% Cover Flow fails to work since the update.
can you tell me what is wrong?how can i fix it please as i really need this feature?
Thank you

Does QuickLook work?

  • Cover Flow - preview image for videos and folders

    Hello,
Is there any way to change the still image used as a preview for a video file in Cover Flow in the Finder? I've found that browsing through folders full of video files, it mostly shows me black previews, or previews containing bits of text (opening credits).
It would be useful if I could select a still frame to use as the preview, so that I can actually tell at a glance which video I'm looking at -- the filenames are not particularly useful in this regard. I have all the files tagged for use with spotlight so that I can search them easily, but would still like to be able to find the files visually as well.
Similarly, I have folders full of images. Is it possible to replace the generic folder icon with one of the images contained in that folder, so that I can see which set of photos is in that folder?
I haven't been able to find anything about this, so I'll assume for now it's not possible. Any ideas if this might be a future feature?
    Thanks,
    Johannes.

  • Edited photos pixelated in cover flow preview...

I recently bought a Nikon D90. The images are pristine, but I like to correct the color of every picture I shoot using Photoshop CS4 and then import the corrected image into Aperture.
My problem is that when I correct the color using AutoLevels in Photoshop, and then view the image in cover flow, the preview is smaller and very pixelated. I'm able to open the photo in Preview, but the cover flow preview's quality is horrible. This was never a problem with image files from any of my previous cameras.
I've tried to see the differences between the specs on the two files, but can't see any. I'd like to understand why this is before I start making changes to all of the files I shoot with the new camera. My hope is that I won't create a bigger problem once the files are in Aperture.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm sure my workflow is far from professional. Aperture certainly does non-destructive editing, but I'm using it for cataloging more than editing. I've been using Photoshop longer and trust my skills with it more. However, using an external editor with Aperture results in the application creating a huge secondary edit file (I think it's a PNG file, but don't quote me). Rather than create that large unnecessary file, I'd prefer to import a file that I've already correct once. If I want to work with the image later, I export a new image from Aperture and work from there.
I'm shooting in JPEG (again, I'm far from professional). I don't know that I'm doing the right thing here, but I don't want my lack of knowledge to compound my problem by importing an image file I've messed up somehow.

  • Carousel View Better Than Cover Flow For The Finder?

I have been using my .Mac Web Gallery quite a bit lately and I love the new and improved Carousel view. Apple keeps updating it (they added reflections, a nice play/pause scroll bar, and now you can use the scroll wheel (or ball) on your mouse just like Cover Flow in iTunes and the Finder) making it better and better and it has gotten to the point where I think it would make a lot more sense (and look nicer) for Apple to implement it in the Finder in place of Cover Flow. Cover Flow works perfectly for iTunes still (as that's what it was intended for) and I think that it's "Ok" in the Finder in Leopard, but now that Apple has cleaned up the Carousel view so much in the .Mac Web Gallery, I can see it looking PERFECT in the Finder in Leopard. For anyone who's used or seen the Cover Flow view in the Finder, you'll realize what I mean when I say that it's "Ok". The problem with it is that most of the dynamically generated icons in Leopard are not nice squares like the albums in iTunes so the icons off to the sides of the center one look skewed and distorted. The Carousel view would fix that problem while retaining the benefits of the Cover Flow view and, from what I can see, would actually enhance the benefits because the side icons would be easier to see as they are not skewed. All I'm suggesting is for Apple to swap out the Cover Flow view in the Finder for the Carousel view and then the Finder would really SHINE! So, my question to any of you is, "Would you vote for the Carousel view to replace the Cover Flow view in the Finder?" Please let me know any of your ideas or suggestions. Thanks.

I made a newer post about this same topic (trying to be a little more strategic) and this time I included a link to a video demonstrating my point. Here's the post http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6574743#6574743.
I couldn't agree with you more on the custom folder icon issues. I'm beginning to find out what the problem is on that. I have used the newest version of Candy Bar for my Home directory icons and that works fine, but there are some folders that I want to use a different icon for and leave the rest as they are. Candy Bar can't do this for me (as it only works with the generic icons) and so I used Apple's Icon Composer application (in the Developer Tools) to make the correct icon sizes for Leopard and then saved them as .icns but then copying and pasting that on a folder would result in the default ICNS icon and not my custom icon (that was under 10.5.1). So I finally got the custom icon to appear, but it only works for sizes 128x128 and lower, even though I put a 512X512 version in there. That's why it doesn't show up in Cover Flow. For some reason, Leopard "blacks" out anything larger than 128x128 on "Cut and Paste" icons. I found that out by copying my custom icon from the Get Info panel and then opening that in Preview and it shows a black background for the larger icons instead of the alpha channel. I'm still trying to figure this out. Also, IconBuilder seems to be doing the same thing (making and ICNS file) but it seems to work better. I haven't used that since I've upgraded to Leopard but from what I've read it should work, but I don't have Photoshop right now. Well, thanks for posting and agreeing with me on the Carousel view and I hope you check out my video. Thanks.

  • Expanding Cover Flow window in Finder

Is there a modifier key that can be held down when expanding a Cover Flow enabled Finder window so that the list of files expands instead of having the Cover Flow images get larger?
I've tried the usual Option+Click, Shift+Click, etc. but nothing seems to work.
Assuming this functionality ISN'T built into the OS, is there hope for adding it in a future update?
    Thanks.
    Enjoy..............G

Ah... that'll be it then, they are 512 x 512. well i guess that bugs been hanging around for quite some time now, anyone got any ideas if anyone's trying to fix it? i guess making 128 x 128 icons wouldn't be the end of the world but it does seem like a step backwards.
one thing that still confuses me... an icon file contains icons of all sizes, why does cover flow not select the right size icon to display?
thanks for that info V.K., much obliged.
    regards, Pablo.

  • Cover flow view in finder not displaying proper

Since I updated to Mavericks my cover flow view in the finder is showing the wrong document, usually the document right before or after the one I'm actually clicked on. How do I fix this?

No, there is no preference setting available to change that.
    Best.

  • Can't Scrub QT Movies in Cover Flow/Preview?

Anyone know how to scrub a QT movie in Cover Flow and the preview in Column View? I see a play button that turns into a stop button. Is this 1980?
BTW, I don't have a clue why Apple doesn't put the QT controls under each QT movie in Icon View. This would be very useful.
    Thanks!

Thanks Spacesuiter! Although I did not post this question, you have solved another problem that has been vexing my web site. My embedded movies would sometimes (tho not consistently) display only the playbar (no video) centered in the embed area like this. I just dumped the plugin you mentioned and it has solved the problem! Too bad Apple has not addressed this.

  • The cover flow in my ipod doesn't work

When I'm in cover flow view and playing an album, the ipod keeps on looping the same album. Also, can the cover flow view plays songs by tracks but not albums?

Cover flow lets you select an album to play, optionally letting you choose which track to start playing. What happens next depends on your shuffle & repeat options, but it will only play tracks from the selected album until you choose another one.

  • Preview in Finder doesn't work. Doesn't preview movies or audio.

When i used to preview files in finder such as movies or audio they would play in a preview window. now, instead, all that comes up is a picture of the application the file is opened in, i.e. quick time or itunes. help?

    Does QuickLook work?

  • Is it possible to switch the cover flow view in finder?

By putting the picture scroll on bottom and the file list on top?

No, there is no preference setting available to change that.
    Best.

  • Finder Cover Flow image preview size is small, cannot be adjusted and showing empty blank previews in Mavericks

When using Cover Flow the image preview in the main window (not the thumbnail list at the bottom) images appear but only use about 1/2 of the window space available.  It is also showing black/blank preview images as I scroll through the files even though they are cached.
I enlarge the Finder to fill my 27 inch display, slide the size adjustment handle (three lines under the file name preview) all the way down as far as I can.  The preview only enlarges to a certain point leaving the upper half of the window unused.  I wish to enlarge the cover flow preview images to use this window space even if it affects the overlapping or number of cover flow images avaialble in the window.    I am assuming this is becasue of the nature of cover flow showing the two previous and two following images to the left and right of the previewed image.  As I scroll left and right occsionally one of the upcoming images will appear as and empty preview as well.  It's all goofed up.
    Hoping for any suggestions.
I have seen articles about using terminal to adjust "flow height" but never anything substainial that seemend like an informed solution.

I also would like to know if there is an answer to this.  My landscape photos always display with a third of the cover flow window as blank empty space (matching your screenshot).  This seems like such a waste.  Is there any way to change the "padding" between the top of the finder bar and the cover flow preview?

  • Missing album art work in cover flow mode

why would i have a missing album in cover flow mode on my ipod classic, but be able to see the same album in itune on my computer. it does shows up under artist catagory, just not cover flow. i have deleted the art work and re copied it, re synced and restarted and still no album cover. also, not marked as a compliaction either. thoughts?
    thx

*Why is artwork not showing on my iPod when it's there in iTunes?*
iTunes will display a cover in many of it's views provided at least one track from the album has embedded artwork. The iPod appears to load only the artwork from track one to create the cover flow and album views which means that it can sometimes fail to display art for albums even when you can see the art in iTunes. Further, when tracks are played on the iPod, artwork is displayed if and only if it exists in the currently playing track, so track one may show art while track two does not.
*How to find tracks without artwork*
To find all the tracks without artwork so that you can update them you can try http://www.stum.de/itunes-find-tracks-without-artwork/ for Windows or http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scripts13.php for Macs. Use Google, Amazon, Discogs etc. to locate relevant jpeg images. Ideally these should be square, 320x320 pixels or above and borderless to give the best results in the various menus. If you have artwork for some tracks of an album, but not others, find the album in the main music folder, select a track with artwork, right-click (Option-Click for Macs) on the art & click copy, then select all the tracks of the album, use CTRL-I or Command-I to *Get Info* and then paste the image into the artwork box.
I say 320x320 because I believe (from using TouchCopy) that it's the size used in the iPod cache so if you're going to crop or resize you might as well work to that size. Otherwise 200x200 is probably good enough.

  • 10.9.3 finder cover flow doesn't save image size

I went from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks 10.9.3. Everything went ok, but I have one annoying problem though.
Everytime I open a cover flow window in Finder I have to resize the image preview section. The Finder window size is saved,
but not the actual image size of the cover flow. It always goes back to a default, very small, size everytime I reopen the Finder window.
Didn't have this problem in Snow Leopard. It worked great. I just know one other person with the same problem. He just bought his MacBook Pro with Mavericks
and I am on a late 09 MacBook. So it shouldn't be a problem with just my Mac and Mavericks.
    So my question is;
Will there be any solution to this soon? Maybe a program update to be released, regarding this issue?
    Thank you for any feedback!

Ok, more information for anyone that might care. The wake-up seems to be the familiar dark wake in order to go into hibernate mode. Except now, it's a death wake. Looking at the logs, I see that it happens exactly 70 minutes after sleeping, even though hibernatemode = 0 (which shouldn't hibernate at all!)
So my power settings look like this:
    Currently in use:
    standbydelay         4200
    standby              1
    halfdim              1
    hibernatefile        /var/vm/sleepimage
    darkwakes            0
    gpuswitch            2
    disksleep            10
    sleep                10
    autopoweroffdelay    14400
    hibernatemode        0
    autopoweroff         1
    ttyskeepawake        1
    displaysleep         2
    acwake               0
    lidwake              1
standbymode is 70 minutes, what a coincidence. I'm going to try setting it to 0 and see what that does.

  • Changing background color in Finder Cover Flow view possible ?

    Hi,
is there any possibility to change the color of the background in the Cover Flow view of Finder ??
    Thanks for some answers

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=290539
If you search for "osx change finder window color" you will find a method (mentioned in the linked topic but not detailed) for doing this in Panther, but it may not work in Tiger. It also requires some pretty basic surgery on the OS files which is inadvisable unless you really don't care if you hose your system. Then there's Shapeshifter mentioned in the link. Again, these kind of things are trying to play with the OS at a basic level and are generally ill advised unless you really don't mind experimenting with your computer and don't care if you have to reinstall all your OS and files at some stage. They can cause unpredictable behavior with upgrades and I would not use them without regular backups.

  • Bug report - Finder crashes in Cover Flow mode with large files

I just came back from the Apple store and was told that I have discovered another bug in Leopard. When in Cover Flow view in Finder and trying to browse directories with large ( multiple GB) files, Finder continually crashes and reboots, oftentimes with 2 new FInder windows.
I created a new user on my MBP to remove the effect of any preferences and the problem repeated itself.
Come up Apple... get on top of these bugs and issue some patches...
Not the kind of new OS I expected from a top notch company like Apple.

Ah... that'll be it then, they are 512 x 512. well i guess that bugs been hanging around for quite some time now, anyone got any ideas if anyone's trying to fix it? i guess making 128 x 128 icons wouldn't be the end of the world but it does seem like a step backwards.
