Cpu and motherboard upgrade

I want to upgrade my cpu to a good one so I need a mother board and the cpu my budget is 150 or should I build my own pc I have a gpu in my pic at the moment any suggestions

hi,
firstly you need to be clear as to whether you want any future upgrades or not(namely a graphics card,in the case of which a power supply upgrade would also be needed)
assuming you only need a cpu and mobo upgrade i must say that 150$ is a little low for upgrading both...a decent cpu comes at that price...
for the cpu id recommend, firstly ,something from intel as they last longer than their amd counterparts...you could look at the following-
http://www.amazon.com/AMD-FD6300WMHKBOX-FX-6300-6-Core-Processor/dp/B009O7YORK/ref=sr_1_1?s=electron... you REALLY want something from amd this is it)
intel core i3-3210,4150(i'd go for this)
as for the mobo...if you want the intel cpu it has to be an lga 1150 socket type...at a lower price range, the
Intel DH87RL 4th Generation
mobo is quite good, the MSI B85M-G43 Motherboard is also worth a look(this one is my recommendation)
for an amd it has to be of the am3 socket type-the
Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Motherboard is what id get
youll have to stretch to around 200 at the least
this is just an outline...anything else you need, just ask

  • CPU and Motherboard upgrade for Premiere Elements 11

Hi all. Been perusing the Premiere Elements and Pro forums but still have a few questions.
I’m upgrading Premiere Elements from PrE9 to PrE11 and am upgrading some of my desktop’s hardware at the same time. I could use some advice about choosing a CPU, graphics card, and motherboard. The goal of this upgrade is to considerably speedup transcoding without breaking the bank. The budget’s a bit flexible but I’d like to keep it at or under $500 for the motherboard/CPU combo.
The computer will be used for editing and transcoding AVCHD videos. The videos are shot in either 1080i or 1080p using a Panasonic HDC-TM700.
I’m processing about 2-3 hours of video per week and my current system takes a long time to transcode. For example, it takes well over 3 hours to convert 1 hour of AVCHD video to wmv. An Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 with 3 GB of RAM was fine for the occasional video, but it’s too slow for what’s currently needing to be processed.
    New CPU:
At this point I’m looking at the following processors:
    i5 3570K
    Ivy Bridge
    No hyper threading
    i7 2600K
    Sandy Bridge
    hyper threading
    i7 3770K
    Ivy Bridge
    hyper threading
    Questions:
) Does PrE11 make use of hyper threading?
) If PrE11 doesn’t use hyper threading is there much of anything to be gained by getting the i7? The i5 is about $90- $100 cheaper than the i7 CPUs and seems pretty quick.
    New Motherboard:
I’ve had good luck overclocking Asus motherboards, so I’m leaning towards getting another one, but am open to alternatives.
The choice of board will depend mainly on Intel’s northbridge chip:
    Ivy Bridge       –  Z77 chip
    Sandy Bridge  –  Z68 chip
    Question:
) Are there any other northbridge chip/CPU combos I should be looking at?
    Current Graphics Card:
    nVidia Geforce 8400 GS 512 MB DDR2
Drivers are up to date and downloaded from nVidia.
    Question:
) Since PrE11 doesn’t use the graphics card’s GPU, will it be okay to continue using this card for the new build? I’m not a gamer and this card works just fine for the current build.
    Additional hardware/software details:
    PSU: Seasonic X660
HDD: Four 1TB 7200 rpm drives
    Memory: 16 GB DDR3 RAM
OS: Win7 64 bit or Win8 64 bit (haven’t decided yet whether to go with Win 7 or 8)
Thanks in advance for your comments and help.

I have been going through the same process. Yes PE does support multiple threads and definatley go with the ivybridge i7 cpu. Asus is also the board I'm going with. They have made OCing much easier but be careful of high temps that leads to early failure of the cpu . Most of them let you have a maximum of 32 gig of ram and with memory so cheap check out upgrading to a higher grade memory. This can be overclocked as well. One of the ivy bridge cpus has 6 cores but cost $500 plus and requires a more expensive MB as well. too expensive for me though. I believe the built in graphics processor in the i7 k series the HD4000 is enough for PE. For about $650 I got an i7 at Microcenter for $229 and I think they just lowered the price to $200 an Asus MB at Newegg for $140 and 16gig ram for $70 also check out SSD drives in the 128 gig range are about $100 which you could use for you C: drive maybe take it up to 256 gig for more. They are getting pretty cheap
    Good luck with your build.

  • CPU and motherboard upgrades for DV7-2278ca

    Hi
I have a DV-2278ca laptop with Intel Core™2 Quad Q9100 2.26-GHz with 12-MB L2 cache and 1066-MHz FSB and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 discrete graphics subsystem and 1-GB of dedicated memory.
I want to upgrade them to something that uses second/third generation INTEL (I5/I7)
Is it possible? if yes what are my options?
    Thanks!

I am going to be honest here. The chances of upgrading those components is very low and not very likely to work with that notebook case.
A second generation Core i5/i7 process is two generations away from the current processor which will require a motherboard upgrade. I'm certain you are aware of this since you mention upgrading the CPU and the motherboard. This is an issue since the case for the notebook was specifically matched to the motherboard it came with. It is possible that finding one that supports what you want and fits that case will be challenging. It can also add up in cost and risk. Risk being the components just don't work or a different feature of the notebook doesn't work any more.
I did do some research to find other posts, in this forum and outside this forum, where others have successfully changed those components. I found plenty on replacing it with the same motherboard, but none that were specifically upgrading it. Perhaps I did not use the right search terms. Notebooks are generally intended to be as they are configured with limited upgrades available for the hard drive and RAM.

  • W701ds CPU and Motherboard temperature problem

    Hello Lenovo Community,
    I have a w701ds 4323 laptop with nvidia fx2800, an SSD drive and a second 500gb hdd.
I use this laptop for web development and image processing and i kept it on a cooling pad, The CPU and MB temperature has always been like between 70-80 °C, but now i've removed the cooling pad and it goes between 80-90.
This is not normal, so can you guys share your experiences with this.
This is supposed to be a powerful machine with i7 and 16gb RAM, but it doesn't seem so, so far i had the nvidia problem but i think i finally fixed it with disabling powermizer and i'm thinking about disabling the overheat slowdown because it just  freezes from time to time.
I'm running windows 7 64 and a linux mint which i barely use. The power settings are for maximum performans, the fans are set to active with no power saving and the bios options for power saving are all disabled.
    Please advise.
    Thank you
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have W701 built 10/2010 with i7 920XM and 16GB RAM. SSD and 500GB hard drive like yours. I'm also running 128GB SSD in the Ultrabay in place of DVD drive. All USB ports in use, including the eSATA port. When set to highest performance, I often pegged the meter on this machine during Photoshop usage. I was finding temps reaching 85F to 90F frequently (no cooling pad). I chose to open the laptop up and inspect the cooling system.  After 3 years, alot of dust and junk had accumulated on both fans (slowing them down) and other various parts of the cooling ducts, etc. Cleaned all that crap out, made it look like new inside.
Running same routines as before, sustained temps above 80F are very rare. In Thinkpad default mode plugged in, average temp is mid-50's. Battery save mode, the sucker idles in the high-40's now. The Nvidia 2800 card also runs about 5F cooler than before.

  • Upgraded CPU and motherboard

How do I make arch get back in touch with the install? Do I need to delete a couple files?  Rerun mkinitcpio?  I can chroot back into it, just need to know what to do.  Thanks.

I'm sorry, I meant to get back to you guys on this, but couldn't.  Arch is up, baybe.
There wasn't really a problem, actually.  You think kernel panic is a problem, and it is, but in this case it was something I caused before I even switched the motherboard and CPU.
I can't remember what it was because I had not been using arch for some time.  I can say I do know I left it with a kernel panic, before, and just never bothered fixing it..and then...
...on top of that the image configuration file had specified modules for the old motherboard.  So, I just updated with pacman, and set the configuration to default, re-ran mkinitcpio and voila.  (Sorry, I nearly forgot to mention it was necessary to regenerate the xorg.conf)  So you see, had I not been monkeying around with it so much before, it would have just worked.  LOL.
But now that I have your attention, I'm wondering why the system seems noticeably less responsive than a much slower VIA motherboard that I had been using.  The new one is a K8T800 with an Opteron 144 in dual channel with 1gb of RAM and a 6600GT 128-bit 128mb AGP card.  It replaced an Nforce2.  The more responsive system is an AMD 1700+ with 512mb of RAM in single-channel with a Dell OEM MX4000 64-bit video card using 64mb of RAM.  It seems like the hesitation is DMA related, as the Hdd always reads while the application waits.  Any thoughts at all, including why rain has to be so cold, are entirely welcome.
Additionally, glxgears gives FPS about half what it should be.

  • MSI GT70 0ND-444US CPU and GPU upgrade

So I have had the GT70 0ND-444US for almost 2 years now, It's an amazing laptop - the only issue is, the GPU is getting outdated and slow for today's games and I was wondering what are my options for upgrading to a new GPU like the GTX 770M? or the GTX 970M? Would cooling be a problem? Also what are my options of upgrading the i7-3630QM to something better?

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/the-official-msi-gt60-70-970m-980m-upgrade-thread.765058/
    Get the 970m.
I would upgrade to either a 3740qm or 3840qm.  They have a few unlocked turbo bins and you'll get phenomenal performance from those chips.
You can upgrade an extreme mobile CPU (3920xm or 3940xm) but they are more expensive usually and also run hotter than the previous mentioned quads.

  • New cpu and motherboard+something is wrong

    Hi!
    I am thinking of bying a amd 64 3400+ or 64 3500+ with a nforce3 motherboard,
But what is the difference between 3500+ and 3400+? I read that the 3500+ is 2.2ghz and the 3400+ is 2.4ghz. But is it worth it? I mean will it do a lot difference in games.
btw. I think my comp is quite sloow, I cant run farcry att the highest details with out freezez and it wont run smooth. I only have agp 4x, is that the problem? And when I play farcry its some strange colors everywhere    I have flashed my X800 PRO into a X800XT PE but it does not go over 65 celsius, So I dont think its because its to hot right?

    Power:............antec truepower 380w(ordered q-tek 650w)
I hope that is a joke, you should keep the Antec TP380 over anything Q-tech have (regardless of how many imaginary watts they print on the sticker).
The 3500+ is 2.2GHz in socket 939 (meaning dual channel DDR400) while the 3400+ is 2.4GHz in socket 754 (only one DDR400 channel).
They trade off clock speed for memroy bandwidth to reach the same preformance on average.
Themost cost effective CPU right now is probably the A64 3000+ or the 3200+ (2.0 and 2.2GHz respectively).
The 3400+ and 3500+ are a huge price hike for very little added preformance.
To play farcry your main problem right now is only 512MB of RAM, when using high settings far cry uses 1GB of RAM and you want as little of that as possible in your swap file.
The 2.53GHz P4 is good enough and the X800 card is excelent.
It will of course be a big improvement if you go for a new CPU which uses DDR400 (and replace the PC2100 with 1GB of DDR400) rather than just adding 512MB to the current system, but it's up to budget.

  • Can i take out the motherboard and CPU and replace it with a newer one?

I was wondering if i could take out the CPU and Motherboard of an early 2011 13" macbook pro with a 2.3GHz dual core i5, and replace it with a 2012 2.9GHz 13" dual core i7? I don't care about the costs but i just want to know if it's possible? I've upgraded my computer to the max so far, but i need some more processing power and i think the new ivy bridge processors will do me some good. Thanks for any replies

    NOPE.
    I'm about 99.9% sure it won't fit.
Plus the rest of the stuff won't plug or won't be compatible.

  • MSI KT8 Neo2 F board, upgraded cpu and used MSIs Live Update, now unstable BSODs

I've had this mobo for almost 2 yrs now with an AMD 3500+ cpu and recently upgraded that to the FX-55. To do that, it required using MSIs Live Update and needed newer chipset drivers. It has the latest bios according to Live Update.
It took a few attempts but finally booted w/o BSODs and has been running for over 1 week BUT is still not right. It's sometimes unstable and will crash (BSOD) just by starting up a browser. I had the bios settings at "optimized" and have tryed a few other changes but so far, I'm not gaining. Last night I couldn't keep it running more than a few minutes w/o it crashing.
I have the MSI manual for my board and plan to spend some more time playing with it tonight but might anyone here have any ideas? It's not running hot (reads 50C) and was stable before with the 3500+. I've tryed "Fail Safe" bios settings too but nothing's better that way either.
I'm hoping that someone here has a few ideas?
    Perhaps related?
After initially running this with the new cpu, I'd see the "searching for MAC address" message and it'd hang there on boot. Someone told me that was because it was trying to do a network boot, selected in the boot sequence SO I've unselected that and that's when things got worse (oddly as it shouldn't IMO). One can select the 3+ boot devices (floppy, USB, CD-DVD rom, HDD) and it use to see the HDDs (2) before but now I'm not (only floppy and CD-DVD rom) and if I unselect the ethernet option (boot other devices), it fails to boot at all and says "insert floppy" as if I was installing Win98 way back when (running XP Pro btw). Something's definately not right with my bios selections.

Let's go back to basics here for a bit. Start by posting your complete specs in your signature like we do. Make sure that your PSU values are also in there.
Let's also look at some tests to help determine where the issue is. I would recommend Memtest86+, OCCT, Prime95, and 3DMarks as a great first series. Also get CPUz and lets see what it shows for CPU and Memory.
If we can get an idea where things begin to fall apart then maybe we can determine if this is driver, hardware or some other issue without having to make the flash happen first. The reason why I am avoiding the flash at this point is that if things are mostly working maybe there is some other cause than Bios. We know that some FX's work with 3.x and some that don't. So I would like to try a bit of checking before we dive into a flash that could cause more issues than it solves if we get this wrong. As things are mostly working now we can assume at least for the moment that maybe the flash is not needed. If we don't see anything during testing that sheds some light then maybe we go ahead with the flash.
That is if your willing to take some time to try and sort this out and maybe learn some stuff in the process. It is of course your call and we will respect whichever decission you make here.

  • A135-S2326 CPU, SSD, and OS upgrade

Just putting this out there... A friend of mine has one of these laptops but she never really used it because it was a slug. About a year ago I upgraded this laptop from Vista to 7pro. There are no missing drivers. They were all available either within 7pro, Windows Update, or from Toshiba's website. Then I flashed the bios to the latest available from Toshiba (ver 1.60). I had to create a bootable CD with the flash utility on it. I used Nero 7 for that. The laptop will beep alot during the flash process and then it will just abruptly shut down making you think something went wrong. But after you power back on your heart rate will return to normal. Then about a week ago I upgraded the hard drive to an Intel SSD - model X25-M with 80Gb capacity. It was a used OEM drive from eBay for about $30. I used Macrium Reflect free edition to clone the 7pro OS onto it using a USB port with a 'Cables To Go' USB to ide/sata hard drive adapter just like the one here:  http://www.cablestogo.com/product/30504/33in-usb-2.0-to-ide-or-serial-ata-drive-adapter-cable Make sure 7pro is updated before installing Macrium Reflect Free because a recent windows update broke Macrium on all of my machines. Macrium would finish the clone process just fine but the cloned drive would not boot. A reinstall of Macrium fixed the problem. The SSD was a huge improvement, especially in boot up time. Transfer rates were low for this SSD (checked with Crystal Disk Mark) due to the SATA I connection of the motherboard but the quick seek times still made launching programs much, much faster. But the single core Celeron 520M at 1.6Ghz had to go. When .NET framework is 'optimizing' after an update and using 100% CPU, you can't do jack sh*t else until it finishes. A little research showed that a Core 2 Duo T5300 at 1.73Ghz was compatible with the chipset (ATI Radeon Xpress 200M) on this board. I just didn't know if the bios would support the CPU. I decided to go for it. I bought a T5300 used on eBay for about $5. The hardest part of the CPU upgrade was taking the laptop apart and keeping track of all the screws - there are 3 different lengths. It will help alot to remember which length came from which hole. I had one short screw left over when I was done and I could not find where it belonged even after taking it back apart several times. I found a YouTube vid on taking this thing apart. I used some Ceramique thermal compound on the CPU and heatsink. The bios offers no info or settings whatsoever for the CPU but 7pro recognized it just fine. I noticed that the power saving features in Win7 and Intel Speedstep were working too, as the CPU would throttle back it's frequency during low CPU demand. When I set minimum CPU to 100% while plugged in it stayed at 1.73Ghz all the time. I used the All CPU Meter gadget to monitor this. CPU temps never got out of hand even while running Prime 95 CPU stress test. You will still be limited to 2Gb max memory and the graphics cannot be upgraded but the laptop literally feels like a few generations newer now. Oh yeah... had to buy a new battery, too...

since the motherboard only supports 2Gb of memory 32 bit 7pro will be just fine.
Exactly. For anybody reading this, here are the disadvantages of 64-bit Windows.
It cannot run any 16-bit applications. That includes all DOS applications. It cannot even install 32-bit applications that have 16-bit installation packages.
In order to run 32-bit programs, 64-bit Windows needs to emulate the 32-bit environment and run the programs there. So it runs most everything slower - not faster. Usually, you won't notice the slow down. See KB906892 for an extreme example. Eventually, there will be 64-bit applications. But for now they are rare.
Many older peripherals have only 32-bit drivers.

The first thing you are going to need is the Service Manual: Manual And let's tick off the things you cannot do at all:  1. Faster or more memory. No. You can only run at 1600 mhz and up to 8 gigs of DDR3-1600 SO-DIMM2. Better video. No. You have the top end motherboard for the G7-2200 series with the AMD 7670M switchable discrete video. Nothing else better is made that will fit in your laptop case. 3. Faster processor. No. i7-3632QM is also as good as it gets. 4. Backlit keyboard. None made for your laptop.  You can install an Intel  Centrino® Wireless-N 2230 802.11 b/g/n 2×2 WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 combination adapter HP Part No. 670290-001 in place of the Realtek and it would be an improvement.  $3 on eBay The video you linked shows upgrading an AMD A8 processor to an A10. The AMDs actually have the video hardware built right into the processor so upgrading the processor also upgrades the video. Yours does not work like that. The video hardware is on the motherboard not in the processor (a bit simpilified but generally true). If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

  • Upgrading Thinkpad W520 CPU and RAID is it possible.

Hello, I have Thinkpad W520. I'm interested two things. First is CPU upgrade. Which is highest CPU for this model? And Can I upgrade to 3rd generation CPU? As I see Ivy Bridge CPU use same socket.  Second is RAID. I havent RAID option on my laptop. Is it possible to add this option? And last question I have warranty. Is it possible throught  warranty upgrade CPU and setup RAID? Of course not for free.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

AFAIK, you can only upgrade within the Sandy Bridge generation. RAID is integral to the motherboard (you'd have to replace the motherboard with one that has RAID).
I don't think warranty does upgrades.

  • CPU and GPU slow down after system upgrade

Ok, I can't find anything similar to the question I have...but this forum goes on forever
As my system specs appear below, my machine was running quite comfortably a week ago, with same setup...minus the acrylic case and second 120GB hard drive.
    At that stage I had "nomal" benchmarking scores 3dmark03 - 5850, Aquamark3 41.000, PC mark 2002 - cpu7020 mem8438 hdd1050.
Life was good and I loved my system
Then I decided it would be cool to upgrade to an acrylic case (which has better cooling with 3 fans) and a second 120 GB HDD to make a striped raid array.
My first concern was the raid Array. I was carefull to buy the exact same seagate hard drive, size etc. the original was only a month old anyway. The second was to use the intel southbridge chip for SATA RAID or the Promise controller? After researching these forums I decided to go with the Intel as it has more possible bandwidth and doesn't sit on the PCI bus.
I got the new case and wearing those stupid white gloves, proceeded to move the components over and trash my "old" metal case.
The windows NTFS format (full) flew by in 30 seconds and I was really impressed.
Once windows xp and all it's drivers and updates were installed, incl sound and graphics etc. I did a 3Dmark 2001 test before upgrading to Dx9...what a bad mark! 3Dmark2001SE - 9950 (terrible for this system).
    I thought it was a DX problem...so I installed Dx9
Then opened that corecenter program (the old one, the one that doesn't crash...)
and my CPU was about 5c hotter than usual, it was running at 40-42c (I have standard intel cooling fan). It went up to 55 at times when running PC mark 2002.
This didn't concern me too much a the system was stable at 32-34c and the northbridge read 60c (but we all know that's not true , more like 35ish.
    My PC mark 2002 is now cpu4200 - mem4800 - hdd1800
(at least the HDD improved!) LOL
    I ran Aquamark3 next...29,900 (ouch!)
Previously my CPU was 8,700 and GPU was 5300
now the CPU read 4400 and the GPU 4600
I don't really notice the speed loss when working, but games and benchmarks tell a different story.
So, My question: What has happened? Why is my CPU power cut in half? and the graphics card slightly slower? The memory speed stayed the same and the HDD speed improved....not a worthwhile upgrade IMO
    What went wrong?
    Here are my theories.
    1) The CPU and system case is getting too hot
Does the CPU "throttle" when it overheats? this could be the reason.
Also both HDD get really hot and the fan in front blows air over them, this hot air could be going over the CPU or GPU. Maybe get 2 HDD coolers?
should I buy a better CPU cooler like the Thermaltake spark7+ ?
    2) The PSU does not have enough watts
I couldn't find traces of voltage lack or spikes...but it could still be a problem
    3) The RAID0 array is a strain on the CPU and chipset
      I'm not sure about this.
My appologies for the lengthy thread, but I wanted to be sure that anyone trying to figure this out had as much info as possible
Thanks if u can help me figure this out.

Perhaps I should upgrade the overall cooling. Get a Thermaltake copper fan and two HDD coolers.
Well, your temps sound allright, no need to worry them, if they really operate at that level.

The solution to set the FSB to 201Mhz sounds good. But do I set this in the BIOS or with Corecenter in windoze?
Propably meant to adust your FSB at BIOS, at least that is what I would suggest.

I will try to re-install the VGA drivers because something strange DID happen when I first installed them. I started with the hercules driver CD, this installed CAT 3.2 drivers. I then upgraded to CAT 3.7 and before it completed I got an error window (send, dont send).
Remove drivers AND ATI control panel first, and then re-install. Use drivers from ATI site, and rather Catalyst 3.7. I Have had problems with 3.8 Catalysts.

Still wouldn't explain why the CPU seems so crippled. I have managed to get a "normal cpu score of 7000+ in PCmark2002 by shutting down, restarting later and killing every process except explorer.
Do you have any processes that seem to eat more juice thant hey should?  Arrange your processes by CPU usage and see if there is something strange.

If this cant be fixed I will reinstall over the weekend. Does anyone know of the RAID0 array on the southbridge causing a system slowdown?
I'm using Intel RAID and it works perfectly, no extra CPU usage is shown and it's pleasantly fast!
And Install latest Intel INF updates and Application Accelerator from Intel site. That's what I'm using, and works fine.
