CPU & Memory allocation in Exadata Database

Hi All,
We are using Exadata 1/8th Rack which is having 256 GB memory and 12 cores on each Database server.
Our requirement is to create 15 databases out of which 10 are standalone and 5 are clustered database.
Now we are concerned about how the memory and cpu will be done for all these databases. I know we should not allocate more than 75% of total memory and cpu on the server. But don't know how much sga and pga I should allocate to each db and what is the mathematics here.
Kindly let us know if any one has done same kind of configuration earlier or any best practices to resolve such issues.
Also, please suggest if instance caging will be helpful here, please share detail if anyone has experience instance caging on exadata.

Some quick math:
With 10 standalone and 5 2-node clustered databases, that would average to 10 instances per database server.  Again going by straight averages, using 75% of total memory and CPU, that would leave you with an average of 19GB of memory and 0.9 CPU cores per instance.  It's a lot of instances but definitely not impossible.
I'd suggest looking at where the databases are sitting now:  assuming they're Oracle databases, how much SGA and PGA do they have allocated now?  What are the advisers telling you about optimal sizes?
With this many instances, instance caging doesn't really make sense:  you'd only have a single CPU core for each instance.  Again here, looking at the existing workload is a good place to start.  How many CPU cores are they using (typical/peak) already?  Would you expect to use more than 75% of CPU capacity during peak usage periods?  If you are, one option to look from the CPU-management side would be the MAX_UTILIZATION_LIMIT, though the main issue is that, as for instance caging, it only refers to a single instance.
And don't ignore I/O capacity.  Even though X4s have a lot of flash, it doesn't hurt to get statistics for read and write volumes on your databases, and see how they compare to Exadata specs.
And lastly, there's no true substitute for real testing.  If you're using 12c, RAT consolidated replay is very nice, but perhaps you can re-purpose application-level testing infrastructure to test on Exadata as well?
There are a lot of good Exadata and general Oracle consolidation presentations from various conferences floating around.  A Google search will show a few, or you may even want to sign up for virtual attendance for one of the major Oracle conferences to get access to the slides and papers.

    We have an application server with 16 GB of RAM and 54 GB of SWAP.
    The application server run on a Windows 2003 IA64 SP2.
    We are using 6.40_ex2 kernel.
    When we run intensive memory program (program that use a lot of memory in internal table) we see that all the EM is allocated in PM.
    HM too is allocated in PM until the PM rech less than 200 MB.
    When the PM is less than 200 MB the total VM used on the server is less than 25 GB (EM: 10 GB; HM < 10 GB).
    There are SAP kernel rules that defined what allocate in RAM and what allocate in Paging file?
    We think that should be a better distribution from RAM and SWAP but we don't know if it is a right consideration.

    Essbase should use the amount of memory allocated in the Database settings, (plus some overhead for the Agent / App Server itself, which should be nowhere near 4G).Take a look at the database settings within the application. Look at the Index Cache, Data Cache and Data File Cache to ensure are not set absurdly high. As a test, leave them at their default values - worry about tuning them later.Also, how many Essbase applications are running on this server?   • Memory Allocation in database ...

    These are the parameters which i given to my database .Actualy my db version is 11.1.0 but compatible is 10.2.0...thats why i am using these parameters in my init.ora...

    But when i am comparing with the 8i db my SGA which i given has too much different ...

    hi memory allocation should always depends on how many transactions hitting your database. it is not appropriate to set 1.5GB or less than that if your database is getting only 1-2 lakh tx's per day.
    You have any reference doc to prove this point? On what basis one would assume his memory sizes when the transactions everyday are increasing in a database?
    i remember 11g is having a wonderful parameter called MEMORY_TARGET. if possible please use that
    I agree its a good parameter.Just an additional note for it It has a different algorithm to allocate the memory. You need to tweak your machine some times a bit to make this parameter work. The memory allocations of /dev/shm needs some time to be tweaked.

  • Cache Memory Allocator \ Short Term Memory Allocator Issues

    Hi all
    I have a number of identically configured (High School) Servers which are giving me the same memory errors (some more frequently than others) and I've run out of ideas.
    They are all HP Proliant DL360 G6 Servers, NetWare 6.5 sp8 with eDir 8.8 sp5.
    The error messages are :
    "Cache memory allocator out of available memory." followed by "Short term memory allocator is out of memory. xxx attempts to get more memory failed. request size in bytes xxxxxxxx from Module SWEEP.NLM"
    The module referred to is always "SWEEP.NLM" (Sophos Anti-virus). A Server reset solves the problem but it is normally back within a month.
    I've posted below a config.txt and segstats.txt from one of the servers.
    I would be grateful if someone could help me with this as it's now becoming a 'headache'.

    Somewhat. From the time of day, and the loading of commvault modules
    inbetween, this looks like a combined backup / AV scan issue. The
    requests of Sophos are comparably big in size, and they vary a lot. That
    will lead to fragmentation of your memory, until the memory can't be
    allocated in one chunk any more. It also *seems* as if Sophos actually
    scans the data while it gets backed up. That is *bad*.

  • How can I get the memory allocation info of a java thread?

    Now I am going to write a program to monitor the execution condition of the java threads. But it seems that the classes in standard edition of JDK does not provide facilities to get the information such as the memory allocation and CPU time of a running thread. How can I do with it? Can I use JNI or JVMDI to get them? If it could do, how?

However, if I want to get the information in my program, I mean, if I want to build a class which may use JNI method to invoke the function written with JVMPI, and then forward the data to other upper layer objects, can it be done?

  • Cannot enable IORM on OEM , kept getting:Resource cannot allocated for a database

    Oracle Exadata X4, trying to allocate IORM through OEM 12c.
    After chose the database, disk io allocation % and io allocation limit %, when I click update, it kept giving me this error: Resource cannot allocated for a database
    I want to know if IORM is already setup or not, if not , how do I get it set?

    I have configured IORM from the command line, cellcli, a number of times but haven't used OEM to set it up. IORM plans are setup on the Exadata storage cells and unlike its counterpart, DBRM, it manages workloads across databases not internal to a single database.
    To see the current IORM plan and see if it is active and has an objective - which are required for IORM to start managing IO resources and before any inter-database or category plans can be created - you can use the following cellcli command:
          cellcli -e list iormplan detail
    This can be executed from the linux command line on each of the storage cells... or even better, if you have dcli setup you can execute it for all your storage cells at once from the linux command line of one of your compute servers, e.g.:
         dcli -g cell_group cellcli -e list iormplan detail
    You can then determine if you need to activate it, set an objective and then can look into creating your inter-database and/or category IORM plans. Look at the following MOS notes for some information on creating IORM plans:

    That would be what I would strongly recommend since it is not documented on what the best practices are from Cisco and with ISE database being sensitve to how the hard disk are presented, I would strong suggest starting fresh in order to rule out any stablity related issues (if you face them) in the future.

    I have set the SGA_MAX_SIZE to 1024M
    Following is the Memory allocation at startup

    I have 512M Physical Memory (RAM) and 1024M Virtual Memory.
    Does this mean Oracle will reserve/block the complete 512M Physical Mem. + 512M from Virtual Memory at startup? will my Virtual Memory usage shootup to 512M or more?
    DB & OS: Oracle 10.2.0.1 on Windows XP SP1

    In my case the entire SGA_MAX_SIZE is allocated at startup. Check the SGA, Shared pool size in my first post.

  • LR4:Book Huge memory allocation - also after finished export to PDF

    I played with the new book feature, around 100 raw pictures using various templates. I like it a lot! Like to have somemore flexibility within the templates though.
    Then I exported to pdf which required lots of CPU & memory. This can be ok I think even though stalling the computer is a bit aggresive?
    I have never had this behaviour before. Slower yes, but this was worse.
    Once export was ready the mac book pro, 4GB was still stalled. The 1.8GB that LR4 had used was still allocated!
    I then closed LR4 and that took several minutes (backing up by default) instead of 30s.
    When closed - all is normal and when starting/stopping LR4 it was all ok again.
    Clearly a bug.

    It's the same on a PC. My book was 200 pages. RAM usage was 2.7gig (out of 8).
    These were RAW images. The resulting pdf was 30megabytes.
    I went back and used 1028pixel wide medium quality jpegs to test. The resulting pdf was still 29,500megs. Odd - you'd think it would be much smaller.
    Also, no way to see two pages wide on tablets (iPad and Blackberry)- if you have a blank left page with a photo on the right. The Adobe Reader will render pdf on a tablet thusly - picture,blank white screen(left page), picture as you view in sequence. Multi photo pages render perfectly as designed.
    There is a lot of work left to do on this book module - but it has possibilities. Foirget blurb, I like the of doing e-books in pdf.
    Just a few bumps left to sort out guys.

    I want to reduce the memory utilisation of my database. I want to know which sqls have assigned by the oracle some OS memory in my database.I have the awr reports with me.
    My questions:
    1.Which section of the awr will give exactly this information?
    (SQL ordered by Sharable Memory doesn't help )
    2. Or can you tell me some views or tables wherein I get the needed the information which I can query against in my database?
    3. How can I reduce the memory utilisation in case I get the problematic sqls?

    I'm not sure that I understand your question. Can you clarify a couple points for me?
    What memory are we talking about here? Normally, most of the RAM allocated to Oracle is going to be SGA. But SGA isn't associated with any particular SQL statement, at least not in a fashion that I could contemplate doing reporting on. Individual SQL statements require RAM temporarily in the PGA during execution, but it sounds like you're not interested in that.
    What is the problem you are trying to solve here? If you want to reduce the amount of RAM allocated to Oracle from the operating system, you should be able to do that without analyzing any specific SQL statements by adjusting memory parameters. Mentioning what version of Oracle, what parameters you've set, and how much you'd like to reduce memory consumption would be helpful if you want specific suggestions for parameters to change.
    What does "problematic sqls" mean in this context?

    i have created a MX file with size 7.5MB.
    when i try to oen the file again then its showing a popus
    saying that there is not enough memory to open the current scene.
    to increse the memory allocated to flash type get info
    command in finder windw.
    but i am unabel to understand which finder window.
    i tried opening the file in flash 7 and 8 , it gives the same
    error.
    can some one help me out???

    It's a corrupted fla file most likely. Windows assigns memory
    dynamically.. that stupid message about assigning more memory to
    Flash is really annoying because it is not possible to do
    your own memory assignments. If you run too many other applications
    at
    the same time you might use up the needed ram memory though.
    If you aren't running too many other things then it's not the
    problem,
    it's the fla file. If you have Windows XP, you can open up
    the Task Manager and see how much memory is in use, before and
    after you
    load your files in Flash. To bring up the Task Manager, press
    CTRL-ALT-DEL Under the Performance tab you can look at CPU load and
    ram usage. Under the Processes tab you can see how much ram
    each program is using. Anyway, almost certainly something wrong
    with
    the fla file.

  • LabVIEW Memory Allocation

    Hey,
    Is it possible to allocate predefined RAM Memory and accumulate data's into it?
    Before going in to detail – I am currently looking to write the inspection results in database for statistical analysis. I hope it will always consume some time to write it in database for each component / iteration. So decided to accumulate all the data in memory and write it at one shot.
    In detail, user has to inputs the memory size via front panel control. Let us assume for writing 1 row of string information occupies “XX” bytes. (Not yet sure how to calculate memory size of 1D string array of 10 elements (max of 20 character in each string)). Dividing the user input memory size with 1 row of memory size will give how many rows we can write at maximum say “N”.
    Use the for loop with “N” iteration and accumulates the 1D info to 2D array of information (auto indexing) and write it in Database at one shot.
    Any help or direction may helps a lot.

     As far I know LabVIEW internally handles the memory allocation and we don't have any option to allocate it. There might be a way by using a windows dll but no direct function atleast.
    As you said you are going to use the for loop, in this case LabVIEW pre-allocates the memory depending on the data type and you don't have to worry about that. For details about the memory according to the data type you can check this link.
    The best solution is the one you find it by yourself

    It seems that server.nlm is growing without limits. When tat occurs, I have the mentioned errors.
    Though NWMKDE seems to have grown. It remains steady around the showed values.
    I'm not brave enough to apply the memcalc's recommended fixes because the following line:
    set file cache maximum size=822083584
    returns an error saying the minimun value should be 1073741824.
    Can someone help me because I'm completely blind here.

    I take it this is primarily a database server, in which case it's OK that Btrieve is using so much memory? You wouldn't want this to be a general file server too. Is the memory error causing any actual problem?
    Server is asking for only 1mb, and due to fragmentation there is little free memory (actually 2mb left, which is a little odd, but neither here nor there).
    Also, let's see your bti.cfg, which is the Btrieve config file. I'll paste in below an ArcServe TID on Btrieve using excessive memory:
    Symptoms
    Btrieve was upgraded to version 8.5 during the installation of ARCserve r11.1. The cachesize in the BTI.cfg microkernel section is at 20 MB (20480). (Pervasive would like this setting placed to 20% of the server memory or database size which ever is less.) The server will keep adding 20 additional Megs of memory to the total amount of memory the server is using for database transactions after each backup job. This can be verified by performing the following at the server console:
    LOAD MONITOR
    Scroll down to System Resources under Available Options and hit enter.
    Scroll down to Alloc Memory (Bytes) and hit enter.
    Locate NWMKDE.nlm in the Resource Tags list.
    Sort by memory bytes and you will slowly see nwmkde.nlm move to the top of the usage list. Unless the server is rebooted the small memory allocations stays at the increased amount.
    Explanation
    Starting with Btrieve version 8.5 and higher, Pervasive has been working to make the Btrieve database more dynamic. They have created a two-tier memory allocation approach. The first level is controlled by the cache size setting in the BTI.cfg. If this becomes inadequate, the second level will be accessed. The default setting for the second level is 60% of the server's total memory.
    The following line in the BTI.cfg will control the second level of memory caching:
    MaxCacheUsage=60; default is 60% of memory.
    An example would be a server with 100 MB of memory and the following settings in sys:\system\bti.cfg:
    [microkernel]
    cachesize=20480
    MaxCacheUsage=60
    This will cause the nwmkde.nlm to use 20 MB (20480) of memory initially and grow up to 60 percent of the total server memory or 60 MB.
    Now you also have to throw Max worker threads into the mix. A setting of Max worker threads = 3 in the BTI.cfg > Btrieve Communications Manager section will also use server memory. It will use 1 MB per thread. In this example, 3 Megs of additional memory will be used. That will bring the total amount of memory used by nwmkde.nlm to 20 MB (20480) + 3 MB = 23 MB when the server is first booted. After running some backups, this number could go up to as high as 60 MB (60% of server memory) if the server dynamically requires it.
    Resolution
    The MaxCacheUsage=60 setting must be set down from this 60% number. Pervasive recommends setting this from 0 to 20. The server needs to be rebooted for this change to take effect.

  • How can I measure memory allocation of a Java Application?

    We built a web application that enables images to be loaded into a database through a servlet running on Tomcat. We have inconsistent behaivor when more than x number of people are loading images simultaneously. No doubt a memory allocation problem, but how can I measure it?
    For example, I'd like to be able to create a graph showing the resources used against the number of people making uploads. I am using Linux and Tomcat/Apache.
    I am hoping for something like Memory counters that are available for measurine Windows applications on MS Windows - comes with the Resource Kit. Does this type of tool exist for the Java/Linux market?

    It is difficult to gauge memory usage from a Java application as the JVM handles garbage collection and even if objects are not referenced they might still be sitting in memory until the next garbage collect.
    Anyhow, a way to query available memory is:
    Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory()
    You can run this at the begining of a process and at the end and examine the difference. You should call System.gc() before each freeMemory() call in order to try to force garbage collection.
    Another method would be to turn to the underlying OS. On linux you could use 'top' or 'ps'. With ps you could do something like:
    ps -o rss,vsz,%mem <pid>
    Where <pid> is the parent Tomcat process' id. The resulting three columns are:
    - Amount of real memory used.
    - Amount of virtual memory used.
    - Percentage of real memory used.
    'man ps' wil give you more options on how to use ps.
    There are also fancy graphical stuff like 'gtop' as well.

    Bonjour, Dans une application à base de CompactRio, j'échantillonne un signal à 10kHz cependant le signal que j'observe sur le graph ne cesse de bouger... Exist-il un moyen de faire un trigger sur le graph? Si oui, comment? Cordialement, Nathan
