.cr2 files - help

I am a newbie (to digital processing) and accidentally shot some important photos in Adobe Raw with my Canon XTI. I have opened them in Photoshop Elements and they are saved as jpegs. All info says 'jpeg' in Elements. However, they appear as .cr2 files in iPhoto nonetheless. Anyone know why this is and have any help in how I can get iPhoto to recognize them as jpeg or convert them to jpeg? I only want to be able to do simple things like uploading to photo hosting sites, etc. Thanks.

Hi, keri60741. If the RAW images were imported into iPhoto, and sometime later you opened them in PSE and used the "Save As..." command to make JPEGs of them, what you did was create new copies of the images in JPEG format, leaving the CR2 versions unchanged. iPhoto doesn't know about those JPEG copies — it only knows about images that have been imported into its library in the normal way. Wherever those JPEGs are now, they'll need to be imported into your iPhoto Library before iPhoto will be able to do anything with them. If the CR2 versions become superfluous after the JPEGs are imported into iPhoto, just move the CR2s into iPhoto's Trash.
Note that if the JPEG versions you created by using Save As... in PSE are currently stored anywhere inside your iPhoto Library folder (when you examine its contents in the Finder, be careful *not to change anything* in there), but they don't appear when the iPhoto application is open, they have not been imported. As long as they remain inside the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder, you won't be able to import them — you'll get a misleading error message if you try. They will have to be moved from that folder to some convenient place, such as a folder on your desktop, before you can import them into iPhoto using the Import command in iPhoto's File menu. If you move anything out of the iPhoto Library folder that already has been imported, you will corrupt the library database and iPhoto will stop working properly. So be particularly careful to move only the JPEG versions of your CR2 files from the iPhoto Library, if indeed that's where they currently are.

Canon 1DX support was added to ACR in version 6.7, 7.1. An updated CS6 should be at level ACR 8.6. If your ACR is not at level 8.6 try using CS6 menu Help>Updates. If that does not install ACR 8.6 try downloading the ACR and DNG 8.6 converter and see if ACR 8.6 will install into your CS6.

That's strage. Seems that the Camera Raw.8bi file has been moved to different location or has gone corrupt. By any chance did you try to move the camera raw plugin to a custom location?
Go To "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS5\File Formats" and look for Camera Raw.8bi file.
If you have that file there, try to download the updated camera raw plugin from the below location.

In case you ae not able to locate the Camera Raw.8bi file on the above location, then i think you need to re-install PS CS5.

Lightroom doesn't use the Camera Raw plug-in. All of the Camera Raw technology is part of the Lightroom program. You will either have to upgrade to Lightroom 5 or use the DNG converter to create digital negative copies that can be used with Lightroom 4.

HELP!!! I Can't Import .CR2 Files In Lr4?!?!

I have a Canon Digital Rebel T3 and everytime since yesterday I tried to import images it tells me it can't read file *****.CR2. I Am fairly new to photography but would like to know what a .CR2 file is and how suddenly I'm getting them and it won't let me import them. Did I accidentally change a setting in Lr4?

I have just got LR4 and the same thing happened to me after I chose a new directory to import them to, just refused to import them. I am importing Canon 5D2 CR2 raw files. However, when I used the default 'my pictures' it worked. Not good when you want to specify a folder for your images. Have you had any more insights into this?

What version of Bridge and Camera Raw is your friend using? And what camera is this from?
Each camera must be supported specifically and older versions of Adobe products don’t get updated for newer cameras.
Your CS6 is obviously new enough and has been updated to a new enough version of the Camera Raw plug-in but perhaps theirs is older or hasn’t been updated.
Here is a list of cameras that Adobe supports along with the version of the Camera Raw plug-in that is needed to read them:

For versions older than CS6, the highest CR version is +1 of the CS version—CS5 can use CR6.x but not CR 7 or 8.
The exception is CS6 which is still be sold by Adobe so can be updated to CR8 even though it initially shipped with CR7.

Recovered my deleted CR2 files but now they wont open,,,, HELP

Hi everyone.
I recently had a major disaster, my external hard drive crashed losing some very very precious photos of clients. I have had experts do a recovery on my laptop where they were originally downloaded too and recovered the CR2 files.
Problem is now CS5 and bridge wont open them. My IT guy has done a recovery process to recover the deleted files of my laptop hard drive... can this be a problem iwth CR2 files?

HELP! SOME .cr2 Files not able to be opened by LR or Adobe

I have about 200 .cr2 files which aren't able to be imported or opened in either LR4, Photoshop CS4 or DNG Converter. I have succesfully imported 3000 files from the same shoot shot across different cards including this particular card.
I don't understand why this is happening. I need to know if there is a way of recovering the file information and retiveing these images as they are for clients. This has happened in the past before but now this particular client wants the images that have failed to import. ( of course!)

The raw files are either corrupted or from a camera model newer than the raw-converter supports.
The statement about some files on the same card working ok suggests it is more a corruption problem since it would be normal that all photos on the same card would be from the same camera, although perhaps if some files are shot in small-raw mode or stills-during-video mode and perhaps the raw converter doesn’t know how to process those. Are you using the latest DNG converter (7.3) to process the files or an old one from the CS4 era?
Do these non-importing files work in Canon-supposed software, such as Digital Photo Professional from the newest camera model used in the shoot? By “work” I mean can you save a JPG from the CR2 files in DPP, not merely view the thumbnails or previews which are looking at the camera-embedded JPG preview, not decoding the raw data?
If the raw files are corrupted then if they are corrupted on the card then the data is lost, but if they were corrupted in the transfer process then you may be able to retransfer them and have them work. If you have already reused the card and written over the images with more images then you also cannot retransfer them, but if you have only formatted the card there are programs that can recover deleted images from such a card.
If the raw data is corrupted but the preview jpg is intact there may be a way to extract those and work with them, which is not as good as working with raw data, but better than nothing.
The underscore prefix of the raw filename means that the camera, itself, was in AdobeRGB mode as opposed so sRGB mode, which doesn’t really affect the raw data, just the camera-produced JPGs.
If the situation is that you are looking at raw files from a prior photoshoot that used to work and now don’t, then your hard-drive may be going bad and that is more serious.
It is unlikely that Lightroom has corrupted anything unless you are using 1.4.0 which had the 1.4.1 update issued for it due to corruption when re-writing the capture-timestamp in the raw file, something that newer versions of LR can be told not to do.
Just to be sure it is not camera incompatibilities you might clarify what camera models and what versions of the camera-raw plug-in (help / about plug-ins / camera raw), and DNG Converter and Lightroom you are using and if this is from a current photoshoot that still has raws on the cards or from an old one.

Your camera, the Canon EOS Digital Rebel T1i EOS 500D EOS Kiss X3 Digital. Has been supported ever since ACR version 5.4, so ACR 5.7 is the correct one to install.
Note that we're NOT talking about the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter 5.7, which needs to be launched and run separately from Photoshop or Bridge every time you have a new batch of raw Canon files in order first to convert them to raw DNG files.
No, we're talking about ACR 5.7, the Camera Raw plug-in 5.7 that you need to download and install in the precise location strictly according to the precise instructions on the download, and only then re-launch Photoshop and/or Bridge CS.
If you downloaded the DNG Converter 5.7 by mistake, that's not going to magically or automatically open your raw files. You need to look for, download and install ACR 5.7 in the correct location. Here's the link to the Windows ACR 5.7 download:

I have a 450D and the files open just fine in LR5.
Is this your first attempt at using LR or your first attempt at developing CR2 files?
It sounds like your raw files may be corrupted or there is some permission problem that is preventing LR from reading the files.
Can you upload one of these unrecognized files to http://www.dropbox.com/ and post a public download link to it, for others to test?
Also try copying just one CR2 file to your internal drive and see if that imports, in case there is some problem with the permissions on the external drive. Just use Finder to copy the file, not LR, in case that is an issue.

HELP! Cannot open Canon RAW (CR2) file in PP5.5.2 (Mac)

Hi folks.
I cannot import RAW (CR2) files (Canon 5D2) files into premiere pro 5.5.2!
I can get them into After Effects (through cameraraw) but PP does not even show them as a "supported file type"
If I drag and drop from the finder I get "unsupported file type" error
My understanding is that CR2 files are supported in CS5.5
Any ideas

For the rest, everything seems to be "normal"

To use Camera RAW, you will need to process the files through a Camera RAW converter. With the proper ACR module, PS, and Lightroom will handle that processing, as will the Canon utility. With Adobe ACR, make sure to update to a version that handles YOUR camera's RAW files - mfgrs. tweak those model to model, so keeping the ACR module current will insure that you can handle the particular Camera RAW files properly.
I agree with Stephen's rec. to NOT use JPEG, if ultimate quality is of a concern. In PS, I just process my Nikon, Panny or Canon Camera RAW files to PSD. I would assume that the Canon utility would have the option for TIFF, as my older one does - there is no option for PSD in it. Do not know about the newer Canon Camer RAW processing, but TIFF should be just fine.
