Crashes Increasing

I use OS 10.3.9 on an iBook G4. In the past two weeks I have had an increasing number of crashes. I may not be using the correct term programs keep quitting unexpectedly. They have occurred while not doing anything like Version Tracker today which launches at start up, it loaded then quit. Mail and Safari are quitting more often as they are used more often. The reason seem random, changing fonts in an email clicking on a link, etc.
I run Disk Utility anytime I do an install or update but nothing else.
Any suggestions? Any news of this being a broad problem?
Thanks
Richard

Hi! Try booting from the install disc and repairing the drive. Repairing permissions is good but sometimes the drive's directory needs repairing and you can only repair a drive while booted from a different volume. Tom
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

  • IPhone 4 Crash Increase on iOS 5/iOS5.1.1....

Has any iPhone 4 users been experiencing more crashes than normal? I cannot open Facebook or Twitter on safari or their apps. My iPhone acts as if it's loading the page data up then the screen goes black and safari crashes. Same with their respective apps. It's as if those two pages overload my phone. I had this problem with iOS5 and it's recent update iOS 5.1.1. Today my phone crashed 23 times in a row (yes I counted!) before I gave up trying to open them.
Along with the two issues above, I noticed if I send any iMessages to anyone during the time I am experiencing the high number of crashes, they delete off my phone AND the recipients phone. They will deliver, but when I open iMessage after a crash they will have gone.
Last week I plugged my phone to iTunes and did a software upgrade and imediately started having the issue, then within about two hours of upgrading to 5.1.1 I I had to do a software restore because it was SO bad. It solved the problem for all of about NEVER lol I thought it might have something to do with the ram needed to run those apps and load those pages so I deleted ALL my images and loads of apps I don't use, that only increased my storage size. When I started experiencing these issues I had about 4gb left of my 16gb storage, after a restore and clean out I had 10gb.  When I started experiencing the problems I was still on iOS 5.0 I'm now on iOS 5.1.1 and it's gotten worse and thrown the new issue of iMessages deleting that I have sent in to the mix.
Lastly, I noticed its not a constant issue. I will have a series of crashes, my phone will act incredibly slow, iMessage deletes messages etc, Facebook and Twitter don't open, in fact my phone will crawl so slowly it's pure agony, switching my phone off and the back on doesn't help, and then it will suddenly work again. Like today, I was out sat in the huge post office queue and tried to use Facebook via safari and it kept crashing, happened over and over, it was like this for about 30 minutes, then it sorted itself out again and now I am at home I can use Facebook via safari.
Come to think of it, could it be related to the fact that I was trying to load those apps and we pages up on 3G and not wifi?
Sorry for the long post but any suggestions or help to remedy this issue would be great.

i am experiencing same problem!!!really very frustrated

  • Snow Leopard crashes increasing

    Hello-
Since updating to Snow Leopard, my mac crashes three-four times a week. Lately it's been happening two or more times a day. It starts with the screen freezing, then part of the screen doesn't display the video correctly (like another image is being displayed...) then it restarts on it's own. I've never seen the display do this- and it can't be a good sign.
I haven't been able to determine any responsible application, and I'm on my fourth SL re-install. Does anybody have any ideas why Snow Leopard crashes so much? Any ideas are welcome.
    Thanks

    An update to my problem:
I think there are two types of crashes happening:
    1) _With restart_. This happens almost exclusively while iDVD is rendering video.
    2) _System freeze._ I can't pin these crashes to any application, and I have to do a hard restart to get out of it. These happen almost daily.
I tried reinstalling iDVD from the disk that came with my computer, but he option to install is greyed out. I deleted the iDVD cache in my home folder and themes from iDVD 1-4. Unfortunately it is still happening.
    Ay thoughts?
    Thanks!

Fortunately, Apple is repairing all of these computers for free, so make a backup with Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner, and take the computer to an Apple Store or reseller to get the Mac repaired for free. • Photoshop CS5 64 bit crashes at launch, save as, and when opening photos from Lightroom.

I have had this problem intermittently for years with different versions and different computers, but this time it is not going away.  I need to use the 64 bit version for large files, but it keeps crashing in several different ways.
1- I open the program from the desktop.  It shows the spash screen, shows the workspace for a couple of seconds, and then crashes with the message:

I am using a decent computer with 16 gig of ram.
I am opening the program as an administrator.
I have reset the prefrences too many times to count by deleting the prefrences and holding down ctrl+alt+shift at startup.
2- If by some wild stretch of the imagination I get the program to start with totally cleared prefrences and running as administrator then the program will crash about 75% of the time when using "Save As".
If I try to do anything special like create a new folder to put the file into then the chances of a crash increase greatly.
3- If I try to open up a file from Lightroom, even if the files are opening every other way, Photoshop will crash very often.
What is going on here?  I have made no changes to my computer, have not installed any new programs, and, as I stated earlier, have everything updated.  I even stopped using plugins a long time ago because I did not want to take the chance that it was going to cause this fragile program to crash, so all plugins are uninstalled.  Why does this keep happening?  When this has happened before everything will work fine for months and then suddenly I cannot get the program to open.  When it does open again, for seemingly as unknown a reason as when it stopped, it will work anywhere from a few minutes to another couple of months.
This seems to be a problem that tons of people have, but I have not been able to find any answer other than "Delete Settings" or "Run as Administrator" or "Update *****."
What can I do to keep this from happening and to fix it when it happens?

    Update - Problem Solved.
The problem turned out to be with with Avast.  I found other people that were having the same problem with Outlook and they pointed to this problem.  The live scripts protection seems to have been causing the crash on startup.  Why it was intermittant at first and got worse I have no idea, but since disabling Avast temporarily while starting I have not had the problem again.  Now I am just going to have to start shopping for more Photoshop friendly antivirus software.
Thank you for the advice Mylenium, unfortunately (or actually fortunately for me) I did not have any 64 bit conflicts.
The other action that I took was to remove all programs installed since the problem started.  This did not fix the problem but it certainly cannot hurt to keep everything that I am not using off the computer anyways.

  • Mac crashes; Firefox 33.02 FORGETS all tabs (Safari doesn't!)

    MacBook Air (mid-2011), OS 10.10, 4 gig
When the Mac crashes - increasingly frequently, sigh - Firefox forgets all open windows and current tabs... which is VERY annoying - especially as Safari DOESN'T.
This is so infuriating that I'm about to give up on Firefox, after many years.

This problem started for me immediately after the firefox reboot after the last update. 6.0.2

  • Curve 8520 crashes alot and shows a white screen

I bought my bb in may. Now since a week ago it sometimes crashes the screen turns green and purple and it fades to white. I have to take out my battery and charge it without. Then when the sign of no battery shows I put it back in. When I reboot my bb without taking out the battery first it gets stuck in the process.
But the BB keeps on crashing, and the amount of crashes increase...
    help me please?

Hello salgaga and welcome to the BlackBerry® Support Community Forums.
Sorry to hear you are experiencing an issue with your BlackBerry® Curve™ 8520 smartphone.
It would be advised you backup your user data using BlackBerry® Desktop Software and reinstall your software as shown in KB11320 How to perform a clean reload of the BlackBerry Device Software for Windows or KB19915 Perform a clean reload of BlackBerry smartphone application software using BlackBerry Desktop Software on a Mac computer
Before essential data is restored to your Curve, check to make sure you test the performance to ensure the screen is normal. Should the screen still display the alternate colours it would be advised you contact your point of sale for hardware related repairs.
    Hope this answers your question.

  • Firefox crashes or freezes unexpected while watching/using flash contents

Firefox crashes or freezes unexpected while watching/using flash contents. Particularly, when I need any flash content. It freezes up so that the only option will be to force quit the firefox.

I've noticed the crashing increasing with the newer versions. The worst thing is when I'm writing a long email and then go to a page with flash and ff locks up and then crashes. I use IE now for most flash content or mission critical emailing but IE's interface is poorly laid out so I don't like it. I've tried FF with the plugin container and without it and it crashes either way (more often without the container). I use adblock and firebug. I wonder if ppl experiencing this prob are using those plugins too.

  • Crashing and bluescreens in CS5.5

AE is crashing many times/daily and bluescreen frequency is increasing (today I had 2).
I'm working on my first 16 bit linear project (1280x800) w/a lot of layers and frequent use of Scatterize. Trapcode Shine, Particular.
I prerender all my 16bit 3D renders and bring them back in as 8bit png sequences.  All the other elements are 8bpc.
As the project gets more complex, my performance goes down and crashing increases.  Basically when I open the project, the response is great, but over a short time it slows down and crashes.  The problem seems to be AE not releasing memory from RAM previews.
I've read the thread on recc'd settings and used the suggestion for 24GB RAM.
    NextI'm going to try non-multithreaded.
    My system:
    i7 980 (12 cores)
    24 GB Ram
    SUS SABERTOOTH X58 Motherboard
    Win7 Pro x64 SP1
    nVidia QuadroFX 4600.  Driver 275.89
Kingston HyperX 240.0 GB Solid State Drive
    Second SATA III drive.
Indexing turned off on the drive.
I've closed all my resident programs (Skype, MalwareBytes, Carbonite, iTunes Helper)
I'm wondering if I need a video card with a lot more memory...
Any suggestions will be appreciated, especially if we can figure this out, because I'm working on a big job...
    Thanks.

Good question.  Are you refering to what is printed on the bluescreen?  I don't always look!  When I have looked, it has identified various apps that were running at the time.  However, I don't think that is accurate for identifying the source of the problem, because this occurs even when no other apps are running.  Because of the way it progressively slows down, it seems to me that there is a memory issue somewhere in the pipeline.  I can imagine that 16bpc color increases the memory requirement signficantly, that's why I'm suspicious of an older video card (even though its high end).
I'm considering converting all my 3D sequences using a 16bpc project, then doing importing them into an 8bpc project to add effects... does that seem worthwhile?

  • Firefox crashes or freezes when Yahoo messenger is open

So I just updated to the most recent version a few days ago, and have been forced to use IE because I can't keep firefox open while Yahoo messenger is open, which always is because I stay on there in case someone needs to contact me. I may just try installing an older version until this problem gets resolved, but was hoping for some input.

  • IPad Air w/ Wi-Fi + Cellular Operating System Crashes

From the day I bought an iPad Air, I have experienced crashes. I never had this issue with any of the other models I had previously (iPad I II III & mini). Three months later while traveling, it completely died and I was instructed to reinstall the operating system. iTunes wouldn't recognize it but I got through the installation. I retored it as a new iPad and still had crashes. The iPad was replaced. The replacement started crashing (increasing with every day), and after just over a month it also completely died (reset would not revive it). Once again, I am reinstalling the operating system. Has this happen to anyone else?

Typing from an iPad Air. No probs. I see people are having problems running 32bit apps on 64bit platforms. Maybe your storage is full? Is the backup from an older backup, because sometimes it the back ups that can be faulty. Maybe if you have time try restoring the software and set it up as a new device. See if the problem still persists.

  • Why is Flash Player still crashing?

I am updated on ALL that need to be updated from my browser (mozilla firefox) to add-ons to Adobe, etc.  Why then, when updated new version of Adobe (11.4.402.287) did the crashes increase?  And in the last few days or so I can't even click video links (UTube or others) w/o it crashing & it got so bad a few times I actually had to shut comp off b/c the crash froze everything. HELP!

Firefox won't close and always a flashplayer logo in my taskbar - have LATEST everything.  Sick of your buggy buggy software, Adobe!!!  Since the 1990's been dealing with your arrogant programming strategy of ignoring other software and letting the users just "deal with it".  I mourn for MacroMedia and hope for your demise as a company!!
next stop, TWITTER TWITTER TWITTER to bash Adobe!  power to the people!!!

  • How long can a disk repair take?

I was having a huge kernal panic problem so I upgraded my iMac G4 to Tiger, the crashes increased. Then I updated Tiger via Software Update on 12/2. I haven't made it to a full boot-up yet. Tiger's untilies could not repair the directories so I tried my old Tech Tool disc. It ran seemingly (no error messagess) repairing the directories for 4 days and was going strong when I read that I was not supposed to do that. Now I have Disk Warrior 3.0.3 and it has been running for 30 hrs. Think I'm on the road to recovery and how long might this road be? 4 days?
    thanks

First and for future reference, when experiencing a major problem such as a kernel panic with an existing OS, you should not install a major OS Upgrade or Update to the existing OS until the problem is resolved.
As you also discovered, the old TechTool disc you used is not compatible with Tiger so it sounds like your hard drive directory is in very bad shape.
I guess it is also safe to assume you don't have and maintain a regular backup?
Not sure how long Disk Warrior will take but it shouldn't take 4 days. I would also prepare for the worst if you don't have a backup.

  • IPhone hardware failure in 1 yr 2 months! Can anything be done for replacement?

I had purchased an iPhone 5 in Nov 2012 here in India (Bangalore) for ~ Rs 45,000.
However for the past few months it started crashing mysteriously. For the last few days the frequency of crash increased to 20-30 times a day (from the previous 2-3 times a week). Recently after a crash, it rebooted upto the "Recovery Mode" screen only.
I tried with the latest iTunes to do recovery but it always failed at the _end_ of writing the new software. I even tried the DFU mode, but that too fails right at the end of writing the new software. Sometimes it gave error 12 and sometimes error 9. I've tried different USB cables just to make sure there was no problem there but to no avail!
I then showed it to the Apple service center folks here (service is provided by an Apple authorised service unit - Ample) but they too were unable to fix it. They said it was a "rare" internal hardware failure. They are asking me to cough up Rs 21,000 for a replacement unit!
It's barely 2 months out of the warrannty period when the dam phone crashed. This is real poor quality of service from Apple. Is there anything I can do to get my unit replaced? Is there an escalation I can do to get someone's attention in fixing my issue?
    TIA for any tips.

For the first part, that does beg the question whether this is something that is more of a problem with iCloud than it is other providers, for whatever reason.
I'm not a huge fan of anecdotal "evidence" in general, but iCloud mail does seem to have the worst reputation for missing messages when compared to Gmail or even Outlook.com, at least going by a quick search. For other iCloud mail users, does this ever concern you? Any former iCloud users who left for similar reasons?

  • Goodbye Entourage, Hello Mail!

We just upgraded to Exchange Server 2007 allowing me and others in our organization to use Snow Leopard's Exchange client. Wow!
Between a natural impulsiveness and a visceral contempt for all things Microsoft (despite us being Microsoft developers), first step I removed Office 2008 completely along with my Entourage data files.
Whereas 21 months of my email took up 6GB of file space on our Exchange server, the same email took up close to 36GB on my MacBook Air, this despite my having gone through the awkward process of compacting the data base a few months ago. So first dividend: 30GB of additional HD space! Huge on a 128GB drive, especially when I was previously down to under 5GB.
Next benefit: Goodbye, Entourage! No more constant crashing, increasingly sluggish performance, no HTML support, no access to Exchange global address list, inability to see my iPhone messages and numerous other inane and insane bugs and deficiencies (compared with Outlook) such as listing 'sent' search results by sender (me) rather than by recipient.
Just being able to forward HTML formatted emails, paste HTML content into emails, view my iPhone sent emails, easily send emails to all or a group of our staff...
And so far I have seen no problem opening, modifying, creating Word, Excel and PowerPoint files using Pages, Numbers and Keynote.
    What joy!
Upgrading from Exchange server 2003 to 2007 cost us over $10K...and it was worth it. A while back we started to buy our staff MacBook Pros, even to run Windows. Now they are beginning to convert to running Snow Leopard full time.

    Satcomer,
Thanks. I forwarded to our sys admin.
The joy continues. My Air runs a multiple faster and without the fan running (Entourage had become more and more unstable and had begun to consume total CPU spontaneously). And Mail is a pleasure to use as in it just works.
And Microsoft has announced they will ship Outlook for Mac in late 2010. Before or after they close their retail stores, I wonder?
    Apple rocks!
