Created Network and Internet Sharing Problems

Hello,
I created network with WEP password. I proceeded to turn on internet sharing.
All works great until the iMac goes to sleep.
Once it comes back on the network I created is missing and I have create it all over again.
The internet connection is through ethernet staring into the iMac.
Is there a way to get the iMac to stop forgetting the created network and leave the internet connection on? Even when it's sleeping.
Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
Is there a reason why you chose WEP? I ask because WEP is an encryption technology that has been cracked so if possible I"d suggest you use WPA or WPA2 encryption instead. Am I correct to assume you don't have a router and all the other computers connect to the internet through the imac? If you don't have a router I'd suggest you buy one, they are not much money and provide excellent protecton from the internet. A router will protect all the computers on your network behind its firewall and would no longer have to connect through the imac.
A couple of things to check:
Go to System Preferences>Network and highlight 'Wireless' on the left side. (Also, if you don't use Bluetooth or any other type of networking listed there delete them from the list leaving only Ethernet and Airport) Uncheck 'ask to join new networks'.
Then click on 'Advanced..' and under the Airport tab make sure only your network is listed in the 'Prefered Networks' window. Under that window check 'remember any network this computer has joined' and uncheck 'disconnect from wireless networks when logging out'.
That's the way I've got my computer set up and I've never lost a connection.

  • Create a wireless network AND Internet sharing?

    Hi all,
I own a MacBook Pro and an iPhone, and currently live at a state university. The problem is that the wireless network won't allow communication between devices, only to the internet, and you aren't allowed to have a wireless router. You are, by some strange loophole, allowed to share an internet connection from a computer. My problem is that I either can share the Internet (which doesn't allow me to use apps that use WiFi to communicate with my Mac, like iDisplay) or create a wireless network (which means I can't connect to the internet via WiFi on my phone). So here's my question:
How can I share my internet connection with my iPhone as well as be able to use apps that communicate with my mac, such as iDisplay?
    Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Your Mac is already using the Wifi to connect to the  network, you don't have control over the router can't have one, so you can't make any changes to have your iPhone use the router to communicate with your Mac.
They likely already have enough bandwidth issues as it is to allow streaming between devices on the local network too.
Open Mesh with Internet Sharing via the Mac's Ethernet port and a Cat5 cable?

  • Computer - computer network and internet sharing

I apologise if this has been discussed elsewhere - please point me to any useful links.
I have a G4 iMac and iBook (running 10.4.6) both with airport extreme cards installed. I would like to use a computer to computer connection for file / printer sharign and most importantly to share the ethernet connection to the internet running through my iMac.
I would be extremely grateful if someone could point out how to do this and incorporate a practicable level of security (I don't want any of the hundreds of people in adjacent flats downloading lord knows what through my connection).
Having accomplished this, I then need to be able to create a similar connection when required so that when required I can share the internet connection from the iMac with our PC laptop running Windows XP service pack 2.
So, the simpler the better, instructions for creating a computer - computer network for internet and file sharing between two Macs and following that between the Mac with the internet connection and a Windows laptop.
Thank you very much in advance.
    G4 iMac USB 2.0 / G4 iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You don't need to setup up computer to computer connection if your using internet sharing. Once you start internet sharing then your 2 computers are connected togther.
I would be extremely grateful if someone could point out how to do this and incorporate a practicable level of security (I don't want any of the hundreds of people in adjacent flats downloading lord knows what through my connection).
The problem you have is that if you enable internet sharing on one of your macs to share its connection over airport then the only level of security you can enable is WEP encryption.
The problem with WEP encryption is that it offers no real security and can easily be cracked. WPA is the only security you should consider using and unfortunately OSX does not have WPA encryption functionality when using the built in internet sharing function.
Your best solution is to get a wireless router that has a SPI firewall an WPA encryption. Depending on what your current internet connection is and how it is provided would determine the best kind of router to get.

  • Remote App and Internet Sharing Problem

Ok so basically heres the setup we have, we have one of the recent iMacs, a Macbook, and 3 PC's, one running XP and the other 2 Vista. All of these computers are on a network together. All our music is on one of the Vista PC's, called "SERVER". This PC is connected to the speaker system, so is what we use for music.
Now I've been trying to use an iPod Touch we have (most recent firmware 2.2, and most recent Remote app version.) and the remote app to control the itunes on this PC. This is not an issue when the iPod is connected to the Wifi the router itself provides (its one of those wireless routers), but when I switch the Wifi the iPod is using to the Wifi provided by the iMac using internet sharing, it suddenly can't find the library anymore. Internet (safari) still works fine from the ipod when connected to this Wifi point.
My guess is that because the iMac using internet sharing seems to act more like a router than a wireless access point (allocating its own IP adresses ect..), the iPod thinks its on a different wireless network, and thus cant see the itunes library. Obviously the iMac is connected to the router directly by ethernet, if I hadnt mentioned that.
So, my question is, can I fix this ?
Is there any way to make the internet sharing mac behave like a wireless access point and not like a router ?
    Help would be much appreciated.
    Thankyou.

asuming you mean internet sharing as in you connect adhoc to 1 computer using wifi and the rest of the network is wired
problems is the middle name of adhoc wifi though cause everybody problems imho
and wifi routers are soo cheap most people don't bother
even if internet sharing is used remote app should still work if not connecting adhoc at least it's working for me right now
with a setup of many computers 1 wifi router
1 computer sharing internet using an usb 3g modem
remote app works with all my computers and my appletv

  • Lumia 710 signal and Internet sharing problem

I've been using Lumia 710 since 3 months. Even though the initial experience was good now I'm facing a serious signal problem with the phone. We recently moved to a high-rise building where the signal is weak inside the rooms. If the phone looses the signal it doesn't pick-up the signal even though network is available. This is causing a serious a trouble to me as I don't receive or make calls during the period. I either need to switch-off and switch-on again or I need to turn-on and turn-off  flight mode for the phone to pick up the signal. Sometime even though the signal shows 3/4 bars I won't be able to make/receive the calls.
I'm also facing a issue with Internet sharing option. Even though devices are able to connect they are not able to use the internet/data from phone. I was using the same SIM with other phone of different make and it was working pretty fine. I rely a lot on internet sharing option and now I can't even swap my SIM with old phone as Lumia uses micro SIM.
Please let me know the solutions to both these issues.

That is not normal though. Bring your phone to your local Nokia Care Center and let them have a look at it.
Internet Sharing on Edge/G is not working very well, try and find a 3G connection (which is fast enough) and you will get a better experience.

  • Bluetooth Network and Internet sharing issue

I'm trying to set up a network through Bluetooth between two computers having the latest Toshiba Stack installed, and to share the Internet connection with the second computer.
On the firs computer I've set the Internet Connection Sharing, and because of this it automatically sets the TCP/IP adresses for the Bluetooth Personal Area network (192.168.0.1).
On the 2nd computer, i've set everything to obtain it automatically. Firewalls (Kaspersky) disabled.
When I connect the 2 Bluetooth devices, everything looks fine, the 2nd automatically obtains the IP adress, I can ping both computers, and the Internet also works on the 2nd computer, for a few seconds! After that, it appears like the 2nd computer is disconnected from the network... what could be the problem?
In the event viewer under the System tab, I've found Informations like these:
    2nd comp:
The system detected that network adapter \DEVICE\TCPIP_{E44D18EB-91F5-4... was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.
The browser has forced an election on network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{E44D18EB-... because a master browser was stopped.
and at 1st comp also appeares this:
The system detected that network adapter Bluetooth...Area Network - Packet Scheduler Miniport was disconnected from the network, and the adapter's network configuration has been released. If the network adapter was not disconnected, this may indicate that it has malfunctioned. Please contact your vendor for updated drivers.

  • Airport Roaming Network and Internet Sharing

Dear Esteemed Experts (Tesserax et. al):
Thanks to you, I have successfully set up TC and 2 Airport Express N in a roaming network (plugged to Ethernet but using the same name and protocol) using 802.11n (b/g compatible) radio mode. It's working well, except a few blind spots to cover.
If I want to add an old b/g-only Airport Express or Netgear Access Point (WG602) to this roaming network (plugging them into Ethernet outlet), will this slow down the N network?
Also, can I turn on Internet Sharing on my iMac (with N capability) and make it to join the Roaming Netowrk? If so, can I manage it through Airport Utility?
    Thanks
    Aghoo

If I want to add an old b/g-only Airport Express or Netgear Access Point (WG602) to this roaming network (plugging them into Ethernet outlet), will this slow down the N network?
If it is connected via Ethernet it will have no direct affect on the performance of the 802.11n network.
lso, can I turn on Internet Sharing on my iMac (with N capability) and make it to join the Roaming Netowrk?
Internet sharing has nothing to do with joining a wireless network. If you want your iMac to join the wireless network, just go to the AirPort menu and select the network that you want to join.
If so, can I manage it through Airport Utility?
AirPort Utility is only for managing Apple's base stations.

  • Hotspot and internet sharing problem

    Hiiii.
I have purchasd Lumia 520...bt when I tried to connect it by using wifi hotspot it gives certain prblm...
. It says internet sharing is not currently available....plzzzz help......
cndn gettng worse without internet.....plzzz help

I've got similar problems but with my connection tethering doesn't even start:apn was filled in, I start 3G which gives me perfect data transfer H+ quality, wifi is swiched on, I start tethering, I get the tethering menu with lumia 720 name and #of connections =0, the "configuration" button though is GREY and not not active at all, and after 2secs the whole menu is left and the lumia goes back to the main system menu telling me " there's no data connection to be shared" and calls it a day... I tested the same SIM for tethering with exactly the same apn on my old lumia 610 running wp7.8: result is a perfect tethered internet connection, 3.5G speed. So I'm f.ck.d up with my wp8 lumia running Amber!
Can anyone out there in Nokia HQ tell me why a "better" product is performing with a  lot more bugs! And this is a big one! I will consider the 720 for a short while if this isn't solved it goes out and will be replaced by an iOS product which tethers as it should.

  • Remembered Networks and Internet Sharing

How can you view the list of remembered wireless networks to remove one of them? I don't want to connect to this one network when i'm in a certain area, and airport instantly connects when I turn it on. Also, whenever I turn on airport, my powerbook shows up as an ad hoc computer to connect to. Even when my airport is turned off, people can still see my SSID broadcasted from the powerbook. Is there anyway to completely shut down internet connection sharing so that my powerbook does not act as a wireless point?

To turn off Internet Sharing, go into System Prefs -> Sharing -> Internet and untick it.
To change your preferred list, go into System Prefs -> Network -> Airport (from drop down menu). You can also de-activate ad-hoc networks by removing them from the list and change the order they wish to connect to.

  • OSX 10.6.8 and Internet Sharing to Ethernet

I am trying to set up Internet Sharing so that I can connect my old MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 via ethernet to another device - I'm trying with xbox360 and Sony Blu Ray (BPD-S185) (for diversity of devices - I used to have it working on my xbox, but really want it working with the blu ray player but the network status feedback is better for problem solving on the xbox!).
I have my MBP connected to my home network over Airport which has the following details:
    - IP: 192.168.1.5
    - Router IP: 192.168.1.1
I have then enabled Internet Sharing through System Preferences to share my Airport connection to my Ethernet connection.
I have the following Ethernet settings:
    - Configure IPv4: Using DHCP with manual address
    - (Ethernet) IP address: 192.168.2.1
    - Subnet Mask: (blank - not user accessable, changes to 255.255.255.0 when xbox turned on)
    - Router: (blank - not user accessable)
    - DNS Server: 192.168.1.1
    - Search Domains: (left blank)
On the xbox I've set the network settings to:
    - IP: 192.168.2.2
    - Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    - Gateway: 192.168.2.1
    - Primary DNS: 192.168.1.1
    - Secondary DNS: 192.168.2.1
When I then select 'Test my Xbox Live Connection'  it takes a while, the Network status shows 'Connected', however The Internet Failed.  I am informed that the 'Test Failed' and 'more information' tells me I have an 'Internet Error' with the following Status codes:
    W: 0000-000B
    X: 0000-000D
    Y: 0000-0000
    Z: 0000-0000
    ID0004-000
    L: 0015-10F1
    Q: 8007-0435
    T: Wired
    A: 192.168.2.2/255.255.255.0
    G: 192.168.2.1
    D: 192.168.1.1/192.168.2.1
So, it looks as though the problem lies with the MBP and internet sharing on OSX.  I have extra suspicions that this is the problem, as connecting my Blu Ray player to my MBP via ethernet I also get a successful connection to the network, but no internet access.
Pleeeeease can someone help?!?!  This is driving me nuts - a couple of years ago I had internet sharing working to let my xbox connect to the internet, so what's happened in the last few years to mean this won't work?

If you want to back it up there, use the Disk Utility to create a disk image of it.
If you want to import its contents to iMovie, iTunes, or elsewhere, use MPEG Streamclip and Apple's MPEG-2 playback component to convert the VOB files on it to a different format.

  • Error message about firewall and internet sharing

hello all i have a question regarding the use of firewall and internet sharing.
I have a PMG5 connected to internet through Airport. I've linked an Xbox 360 via the built-in ethernet port in order to access Xbox Live. I had to open specific UDP ports on the OS X firewall but it now works fine. However, in the Sharing Preference Pane, Internet Tab, i still get an error message saying that my Internet Sharing is disturbed by the settings of the firewall and sharing services, it says that i did not activate "personal web sharing" in the first two tabs...but i DID ! And there's no way to get rid of this error message.
I know I know some may consider it's not a real problem because it's just an error message while the connection actually works fine but well, I tend to hate error messages when they're not supposed to show up. So if anyone know the answer, thanks in advance...
    Good day to everyone
    Vince, Paris...

sorry about the delay in replying, was kinda busy
well trashing the pref files was useless and i tried with another user, same thing. As for the second opinion, the problem was not about which port was used cause as i said the connection sharing works fine and anyway it was the correct port that was checked, it's just that i get an error message while there is no apparent error and everything works fine, i'm told that personal web sharing is not enabled but it is...
Anyway as i said, it's probably not a real matter, as long as it works...which brings me to another thing. I've created a special protocol in the firewall to enable a proper dialog with the xbox. it's basically the same thing you do for ichat AV when you have video connection problems, you track down the concerned UDP port using terminal, you allow traffic and all... The protocol for the xbox worked great for some days, but now it seems it's not enough, the game set keeps trying on another port and i constantly have to update the protocol or deactivate the firewall...and enabling back all UDP traffic is not enough to solve it.
In a way i think everything is linked, the initial error message when everything was fine and the current trouble. Any idea?
    thanks
    Vince

  • Airport and internet sharing turns off by itself

Hi everyone, I have an imac that I purchased earlier this year, and I use internet sharing to get internet for my ipod touch. Until a few months ago, this worked fine but now airport and internet sharing turn off every time I restart the computer and I have to turn both back on every time. Is anyone else experiencing this problem or know hot to fix it?

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Download and install the v10.5.8 combo update available here.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
One of the "fixes" includes: - compatibility and reliability issues when joining AirPort networks.
After the installation, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Roaming Wifi network and home sharing

    Hi all,
I have the following situation: my iPad (3rd gen) uses my Wifi network to stream my home shared iTunes library. I have a wireless router at one side of my house and an Airport Express at the other side (wired to the router). Both wireless networks are using the same SSID and WPA2 password, so roaming can be made (the Airport Express is configured as a bridge).
When I'm watching a movie or TV show on my iPad and I move from one side of the house to the other, I cannot play the movie any more, I get an error about me not being authorized to watch the video. I have to close the Videos app (terminate it from the task manager too) and then re-open the app and shared library and then I can continue watching.
Is there some configuration I need to make to make this go away? Maybe there is something that I need to setup on the router/Airport Express?

I've always used WPA 2 personal with my Apple wireless router and I've had no problems connecting my original iPhone and iPhone 3G to my wireless network.
Not having your wireless router password protected with either WEP or WPA 2 with WPA 2 being more secure than WEP is it allows anyone else within range of your wireless network to connect to your wireless network and internet connection, and is more of a potential problem with someone that knows what they are doing in this regard gaining access to data on a computer that is connected to your wireless network.
With security disabled and your iPhone connected to the network, select the network on your iPhone to view the network settings followed by selecting Forget This Network.
Follow this by reenabling security with WPA 2 followed by trying to connect your iPhone to the network.

  • 10.7.1 update doesn't fix my internet sharing problem

I've updated my Macbook (late 2008) to 10.7.1 today. I'm disappointed to find that the internet sharing issue still exists. I can ping websites through it, but wget never work. Google.com is accessible while other sites don't load on my iPod touch and Palm Pre Plus. But it did work fine within seconds after internet sharing was started. And internet sharing on my iMac with 10.6.8 works perfectly.
I'm using PPPoE to connect to the internet. I guess there are some problems with MTU (maximum transmission unit).
Don't tell me to change wifi channel or set password, it doesn't help.

Internet sharing worked on 10.7 after doing 1 tweak, that is by changing my Computer Name in internet sharing to something else other than the default one... however after upgrading to 10.7.1, the upgrade would mess up with the same tweaks again. It brought my Computer Name to its default, however when I clicked on edit it would give the changed name... I noticed that it has something to do with the IP Address but in any case I did the following and it works again for me on 10.7.1:
    1) Go to System Preferences>Sharing and click on Internet Sharing (don't 'tick' it yet!)
    2) After upgrading to 10.7.1, the Computer Name displayed on the Internet Sharing Screen would revert to the original, i.e. YourName's MacBook Pro. However, upon click edit next to the space where you can enter your Computer Name, it would give the name I had given while I was on 10.7.
    3) Now you just have to make sure that both names are identical (do not use the default name YourName's MacBook Pro). Please see snapshot below (yes, my Computer Name is 'Network-Error', so don't be surprised:))!
    4) Once you have confirmed that both names are identical, you are set to go and you may 'tick' the Internet Sharing option
    5) An arrow facing upwards will appear instead of the wireless icon on the top tray and your device such as an iPhone should connect without any issues (an IP address will be given).
Note: the other options that I have kept in the Wi-Fi Options tab are as follows:
    1) Network Name: should be identical to the one you have entered above
    2) Channel: 11
    3) Security: 40-bit WEP
    4) Password: I've entered a five-digit password that contains numbers
To confirm that its working for me, I've added a screenshot from my iPhone below:
It doesn't work for me. Thanks anyway.
