Creating a backup of a hard drive continuously

Hey,
I'm thinking of getting another hard drive which would be for backing up my entire hard drive.
I'm not sure whether I'd want this to backup continuously (i.e. if I downloaded a file, it would go straight to both hard drives) or backup at certain intervals (i.e. at the end of every hour replicate the original drive, the advantage to this would be that if ever I accidentally deleted something I needed, say, ~, I would be able to copy it from my backup hard drive to my original hard drive).
So what's peoples thoughts on this?
How do *you* backup your data?
Thanks
Tom

If you are considering buying another drive to backup data you might want to look into setting up a software RAID 1. Software RAID allows you to mirror your data on two partitions on separate drives. When something is written it automattically goes to both drives, i guess this means if you delete something it is deleted from the other drive as well so it doesn't protect against user error! In theory this can boost performance when reading information from disk because there is two locations it can be read from.
I currently do 3 backups, one of my home folder, excluding my music, one of my music, and one of my root filesystem, excluding some directories. I have been using dar for this as it creates nice compressed archives, allows you to split them, and lets you retrive any file from within any piece of the archive. There is also a frontend called Kdar. I have been telling dar to split the archives into 2GB slices and saving them to DVD or storing them on my windows PC using samba. I use 2GB slices because the iso filesystem used when writing DVDs doesn't like single files larger than 2GB.
Someone just pointed me to an app called scdbackup: http://scdbackup.sourceforge.net/main_eng.html
It allows you to write directly to cd/dvd which is a nice feature. It doesn't look like it has been built for arch yet so i'm going to look into doing that (although i am brand new to this distro).

  • Time machine backup done but hard drive activity continues

I backup infrequently my macbook pro to an external firewire hard drive. Prior to today's backup, I changed a setting in the control panel to exclude the system, applications and library. I happened to notice that the prior backup failed. So today, I initiate the backup and when it finishes (as seen in the control panel window and with a still icon at the top of the screen, the hard drive continues to have activity. It is still going at the same level of activity now for over 90 min. A second time machine backup has taken place as well.
Why is this happening. I am not using the drive for anything else. If I unmount the drive, will the backup fail? Is the backup still progressing, even though all other indications say it is finished? Could this activity be the computer indexing the drive? I am not using the drive for any other reason today. I am not looking at folders or moving any files. 214 of 465 GB are available as seen from the time machine preference window.
I am using Leopard with the latest software updates.

Time Machine will do a "second pass" backup if more changes have occurred while it was doing the first one. Ordinarily, that's very quick and most folks rarely notice it. But if there's trouble on either your internal or TM disk, it can take a while.
Could this activity be the computer indexing the drive?
Possibly. Spotlight and Time Machine both use the mds process, and on occasion the two conflict, especially on large backups, slowing or even hanging the backup. Exclude your TM drive from Spotlight indexing, at least temporarily, via System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.
It could also be that your drive is beginning to fail.
Part of your problem may lie in the word "infrequently" -- TM usually works best if you let it do it's hourly backups. After several days, especially if there have been lots of changes, it may do a new, full backup.
Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Copy and post the messages here, along with details: how frequent is "infrequent;" how much data is on your internal HD; how big is your TM disk.
And please update your profile, so we know what kind of Mac you have, and which version of Leopard you're on (it now shows 10.4.11!)

  • Time Machine creates duplicate bu of external hard drive

    First, some disclosure:
    1. I utilize Logic Studio (Pro 9) and use it daily. It crashes 2-3 times a week with little justification.
    2. I have begun getting a prompt that says I’ve removed a drive without ejecting it first....but in reality, I haven’t ejected anything.
    3. I get a prompt stating that a backup has failed.... but it appears my backups have all been completed.
With these problems I’m wondering if I’d be better off making the move to Lion, or would this just complicate my problems? Well, that's why I'm telling you folks my tales of woe....
I was using Time Machine for about 6 months when the following problem occurred:
Last July I went to check a backup and saw that an external drive, called...VIDEO  was backed up, BUT Time Machine also created another backup of the same drive called VIDEO 1. The same exact number of files and same number of bytes appeared to be in this "newly created" 1 backup. I did not check exactly when Time Machine starting creating this duplicate.
I contacted Apple for service and eventually a tech walked me through the steps to eliminate the problem. I’m sorry but I don’t remember the steps that were taken. I later found the external BU drive had a problem and figured that's what may have created the duplication. I replaced it with a new BU drive and life was good. This happened last October.
Tonight I checked one of my Time Machine backup files. I found that TM had again created a duplicate backup of an external drive. It was neither the same VIDEO drive nor the same data that had been involved in the earlier occurrence. TM again used the number 1 to differentiate it from the actual drive that it was supposed to back up.
I went back and found this recent duplication had first occurred on a backup created Dec 21st. The backup from Dec 20th did not have this duplication, nor did any other previous backups on this new hard drive. I do not remember the significance of that date but I “think” I installed Snow Leopard sometime in December.
Tonight, using Disk Utility, I’ve verified the permissions on the drive which TM duplicated and it says they’re OK. I’ve verified the permissions of the internal drive and they’re OK.  I’ve verified the permissions on the external BU drive and they’re OK.
If I need to send screenshots of logs or whatever, I apologize but I might need a bit of an explanation as to how to get to that information.
Thanks much in advance for all replies.

SO, I downloaded and installed Lion. Lion seems a bit faster than SL but Time Machine is still creating the duplicate drives with the number 1 after the name of the legitimate drive.
    That's all I got.

  • Creating Partition in Mac Mini Hard Drive

i Have buy a mac mini a week ago, but before three days ago, some file got corrupted, and it does not start, only the password screen appears, when i entered the password, the screen appears again. and it continues. Now i want to partition the mac mini hard drive. i have only one drive, and i want to create another partition in the hard drive. when i create another partition  through the disk utility , i gives error, and cannot create the partition. i acutally want that first i make partition in the hard drive, and after using the "restore from time machine option" to install the mac osx lion in the system. Please help me in make the partition in the hard drive.

Apple themselves don't specify hard drive RPM because they buy a number of different drives, some apparently 4200 some apparently 5400.
It's no surprise that your retailer wants you to buy a G5 though, and is trying to upsell one based on the minis weaknesses - after all, they get more money from a G5 sale than from a mini. They may also be considering your planned use of Photoshop as a stumbling block to effective use of a mini, but the question really is what you intend to use Photoshop to do. If you're a hobbyist, the system is fine and will work more than adequately - particularly if you max out the RAM. If you're a professional user with pro-level expectations, then a mini likely wouldn't be sufficient, not so much due to the drive speed (powerbook users have run Photoshop verisons for years quite happily on what are predominently 4200rpm drives) but because for pro work, Photoshop needs a lot of hard drive space and a great deal of RAM.
On the basis of what you've posted, I'd say your retailer is more interested in their profit than your need. Chances are, if you run PS on the G4 listed in your profile, you're already running on a drive of similar general performance.

  • How do I backup my external hard drive to time capsule?

How do I back up my external hard drive to time my time capsule?

    Two requirements:
    1) The drive must be connected directly to your Mac via USB, FireWire or Thunderbolt.
    2) The drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
After both requirements have been confirmed......
Click the Time Machine "clock" icon at the top of the Mac's screen
    Click Time Machine Preferences
    Click Options
Here you will see a list of items that are currently Excluded from backups, so your hard drive will appear here.
Click on the name of the hard drive to highlight it
Click on the - (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from the list of items that are Excluded from backups
The drive will be backed up on the next pass that Time Machine makes. Time Machine will continue to back up any changes that are made on the hard drive on subsequent backups.

  • How can I save my iphone backup on my hard drive?

    Hi Guys!
I would like to save my iphone backup on my hard drive cause I don't have enough space on my computer...
Could you help me? How can I select on itune where I want to save it??
    Cheers
    Alex

    Hey there alexsansdrap.c,
I see that you want to find where your iTunes backups are saved in order to transfer them to your external hard drive. You can find the location of the save files by using the information in the following article:
Create and delete iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch backups in iTunes - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204269
    Where your backups are stored
The folder where your backup data is stored depends on your computer's operating system. Make sure the backup folder is included in your data-backup routine. iTunes places the backup files in these places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
The "~" represents your Home folder. If you don't see Library in your Home folder, hold Option and click the Go menu.
    Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata%, then press Return.
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, then choose Run. In the search bar, type %appdata%, then click OK.
Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Braden

How can I force Time Machine to make a complete backup of my Hard Drive.  I just installed a new external drive for Backup since my previous one failed.  Now when I back up, Time Machine only backs up my data folder and the Users folder.
When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

Hi I'd like to jump in here. Your app showed me this:
    Time Machine:
              Skip System Files: NO
              Mobile backups: OFF
              Auto backup: YES
              Volumes being backed up:
Macintosh HD: Disk size: 749.3 GB Disk used: 453.81 GB
              Destinations:
                        Plastic Wrapper [Local] (Last used)
                        Total size: 999.86 GB
                        Total number of backups: 64
                        Oldest backup: 2013-07-24 23:25:11 +0000
                        Last backup: 2013-11-17 01:40:47 +0000
Size of backup disk: Too small
                                  Backup size 999.86 GB < (Disk used 453.81 GB X 3)
Time Machine details may not be accurate.
All volumes being backed up may not be listed.
              /sbin excluded from backup!
              /usr excluded from backup!
              /System excluded from backup!
              /bin excluded from backup!
              /private excluded from backup!
              /Library excluded from backup!
              /Applications excluded from backup!
Aside from the size of my backup drive, which I will increase at some point, I'd really like to have time machine backing up all system folders, especially Applications. How to I reset this hidden exclusions?
    Thanks,
    Darcy

Need to backup and remove photo library from my iphone.  This library was previously backup on a hard drive that crashed.  So these photos are only in the photo library and not in the camera roll.  If I do a full backup, it only takes the camera roll.
So this is a 2 part question:
    1) how to I backup the Photo Library to my new hard drive (as the last one was unrecoverable but previously backed up)
    2) how do I remove the Photo Library form my phone (preferably after backup in item 1)
    Thanks, Janis

Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer.  As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you.  I'm sure you'll pay, however.
Let this be a very important lesson learned.
    Best.

  • Can time capsule backup an external hard drive

Trying to backup an external hard drive to time capsule, through time machine.  Possible?
My drive is greyed out in the Time Machine exclude options.

Yes, when the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or if other means are used to back the drive's contents up.

  • How do I restore my phone from a backup on a hard drive?

I just bought a new iPhone and my computer which had the back up from my old phone broke. I have the hard drive from my computer inside another computer. How do I access my old phones backup from the hard drive, through iTunes and onto my new phone?
NOTE: it's not an external hard drive, it is a PC hard drive that I installed into another PC to access it.

    Hi
This may help it explains where backups are stored on your computer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
Some people have said that they cannot access it directly because of it's format. However, there are programs that will allow you to see and extract data from the backup, a google search for iphone backup extractor might help you out here.
    Hope this helps

i just saved my iphoto original library to my external hard drive, now how do i create new space on my hard drive and create a new iphoto library

Trash the copy of the library you just moved. Then Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
But do you want to have two iPhoto Libraries? Why not just use the one on the External?

  • Does MB Pro do it's own backup to the Hard Drive?

I restored my MB Pro to factory settings because it was acting up in all sort of ways, mainly I was running out of space even thought I didn't have that much data. The computer has 250 gb. And I have 50 gb in music and another 50 in pics. That's it. The rest is PDF and what not totaling no more than 20 gb at most. So when I went to the about my Mac and clicked on storage it shows that there is 60 gb in back ups. Where is this stored and can I delete it?. I have time machine set up with time capsule and do frequent back ups plus and external HD where I keep pics and music and important documents so this "in computer back up" eating my memory I do not need. Also in about my Mac under storage as well shows under "other" a significant amount of storage used. Right now i just finished reinstalling Lion and there's already 13gb used by "other" is there a work around this???
    Thanks guys

Does MB Pro do it's own backup to the Hard Drive?
Yes, it does.  Well, more exactly, Time Machine does.
The backups are "local snapshots" that Time Machine uses in conjuction with the backups makde to your Time Capsule.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4878?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
There is a terminal command that can be used to turn the feature off, but I can't say that I recommend it as the local snapshots serve as a kind of safety net between regular Time Capsule back ups.
