Creating Logical Volume during Oracle VM installation

Hello,
I am trying to install Oracle VM Server on a machine with 2 TB hard-disk. There are 2 disks each with 1 TB capacity.
During Oracle VM Server 2.2.2 installation, if you go with default partitions, layout looks like this
/dev/sda
   sda1          101M  ext3        /boot
   sda2       952737M  ocfs2       /OVS
   sda3         1027M  swap
/dev/sdb
   sdb1         3074M  ext3        /
Free space 950792M  Free SpaceIdeally I would like to give everything except what is needed by */ (root), /boot* and swap to */OVS*.
So from the layout above, I also want to give Free Space to */OVS*.
This excerpt talks about Logical Volume Creation during Oracle VM installation.
During the Oracle VM Server installation, press Alt+F2 to use the terminal, and run the lvm command. When you have finished creating the LVM configuration, press Alt+F1 to return to the Oracle VM Server installation.
But I couldn't figure out how to do this? Can anyone give me exact steps to achieve what I am trying to achieve.
regards, Yora

Hi again
It seems I downloaded by mistake the Oracle VM Server 3.0.1 Source for x86_64 (64 bit).
I should have downloaded the Oracle VM Server 3.0.1 for x86_64 (64 bit).
Now I can get started

  • Error during oracle 8i installation on nt: orancrypt8.dll

    Hi,
During oracle installation i get this error "can't copy orancrypt8.dll to orancrypt8.dll.bak". how do i solve this? the oracle is not working..pls help me out

8i hasn't been supported in years. I haven't seen NT in quite a while, I'm pretty sure Microsoft desupported that a while ago. Are you really trying to install a desupported version of Oracle on a desupported version of Windows?

  • Error in creating Java Users during Solution Manager installation

    Hi gurus,
First time trying to install SAP.
    Red Hat Linux 4
    Oracle
    jdk 1.4.2_11
While installing the Solution Manager, it errored when it was creating Java Users, SAPJSF, J2EE_ADMIN and J2EE_GUEST.
The error description read "jco$exception: rfc_error_system_failure: invalid request".
I want to create these users manually and continue with the rest of process.
I searched lots of entries, notes, etc., but somehow, my "old" pair of eyes (and brains, too) failed to come up with something I could understand.
So, gurus, please help, help, help!!
There are no GUI version of anything installed, no Virtual Admin, no nothing like that. I have to rely on good old unix (Linux) command to do (add users) this.
Can you please, please post the instructions (step-by-step)? Please have a pity on me since this is my very first time dealing with SAP.
    Thanks and regards.

Creating users manually is not the intension of the SAP Installation tool. There are other solutions available
A good starting point is to check if SELinux is enabled or disabled. I've seen lots of broken installations on Red Hat because SELinux does not allow the installer to create users. Check if in /etc/selinux/config  the setting
    SELINUX=disabled
    is set.
I see, that you are using JDK 1.4.2_11. Is this the Sun JDK? In case you are on x86_64 you have to use the IBM JDK instead. You can download it from <a href="https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/iwm/web/reg/download.do?source=lxdk&S_PKG=amd64142sr7&S_TACT=105AGX05&S_CMP=JDK&lang=en_US&cp=UTF-">here</a> .

  • Unable to create logical volume snapshot

    Hi All,
Pls note that the follwoing error is reported when a snapshot is being created  in our Oracle Linux Server release 5.11 box:
    [root@hawaii901 tmp]# lvcreate --size 500m --name snap /dev/ora_vg/vol02
Volume group name expected (no slash)
Run `lvcreate --help' for more information.
    Any clue on this issue?
    Thanks & Regards

LVM snapshot is a general purpose solution that was not designed with Oracle database in mind. It can be used, for example, to quickly create a snapshot prior to a system upgrade, then if you are satisfied with the result, you would delete the snaphot.
There is probably a common misconception. LVM snapshots, like all COW snapshosts that I'm aware off, allow to create a backup of a live filesystem while changes are written to the snapshot volume. Hence it's called "copy on write", or copy on change if you want. This is necessary for system integrity to make a complete backup of all data in a LVM volume at a certain point in time and to allow changes happening while the filesystem backup is taking place. A snapshot is no substitute for a disaster recovery backup in case you loose your storage media. A snapshot only takes seconds, and initially does not copy or backup any data, unless data changes. It is therefore important to delete the snapshot if no longer required, in order to prevent duplication of data and restore file system performance.
If snapshot or COW technololgy suits your purpose, you will actually want to look into BTRFS filesystem, which is more modern, employs the idea of subvolumes and is much more efficient that LVM.

I known that Ubuntu ( and i'm talking about 10.04 or his latest version)  is not  the official version of OS for Oracle, but I'm trying do to a different work with students and they are more familiar with Ubuntu interface, but, when i'm trying to do Oracle installation on Ubuntu machine, i'm getting different kind of errors and i can't successfully finalize the installation. The list below show libs who OUI "complains" during the instalation, even every lib already installed and a list of prerequisites that are failed and will be show on the screen.
Please, can anyone help me with this steps. Sombody have some guide for this kind of instalation. The instalation on Ubuntu is a prerequisites
Erros will be show at the end of installation:
"Error in invoking target 'idg4odbc' of makefile '/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/rdbms/lib/ins_rdbms.mk'."

As you stated, Ubuntu is not a certified distro for Oracle installs - so errors should be expected. Google for sites (like http://www.pythian.com/blog/installing-oracle-11gr2-enterprise-edition-on-ubuntu-10-04-lucid-lynx/) where others have documented their experiences. Also, just because you are able to install the software successfully does not mean it will work as advertised.

  • Error during oracle 10g installation

    HI
During oracle10g installlation on windows vista os
Enter prise manager configuration failed due to the error :starting starting database control refer to the log file at c:\product\10.2.0\db_1\cfgtoollogs\dbca\dbtest\emconfig.log
u can retry configuration this database with enterprise manager later by manually running c:\ora\product\10.2.0\db_1\bin\emca

Windows and Unix (in general) are different from the point of view that on windows platforms no relink operations are required, since the install media has the already compiled and linked executables and dll's required. On the unix like platforms, the story is different, relinking is required to create executables, since the install media has the object files. Makefiles are included to perform the relink operation and the relinking is nothing else but recreate executable images. If you were required to relink, probably it's because during install phase something went wrong and there were no relinked executables that made your working environment fail.
In this case, on the windows platform, this problem looks like a configuration issue.

  • "Agent Configuration Assistant Failed" during oracle 9i installation on xp

    Hi All,
I tried to install Oracle 9i on windows XP. Except the the agent, everything else is successfully installed. Can somebody guide me in fixing the below problem?
    Parameter "orahome" = D:\oracle\ora92
    Parameter "nodeinfo" = NO_VALUE
    Agent Service Failed
Any help in this issue is greatly appreciated.
    Sowjanya.A

Lets start with the basics. There is no such thing as Oracle 9i.
Yes I know Oracle years ago used it as a marketing label but to help you we need the exact version to 3 decimal places.
Either way the version you are just now installing is so old it will be unsupported? Why are you installing Neolithic software?
And finally ... What agent? What agent configuration? What does an agent have to do with a 9i installation on XP?
The more specific you are, and the clearer your description, the more likely you will get help. Though why you are installing something so old escapes me at the moment. <g>

mattbarszcz wrote:So I went back to the live cd, I ran efibootmgr with no arguments, and sure enough there was only 1 entry for the Windows Boot Manager.  It seems that efibootmgr commands don't seem to take effect.
Because of bugs in efibootmgr and/or EFI implementations, efibootmgr doesn't always work. Using bcfg from an EFI shell or bcdedit in Windows can be more effective on some systems. That said, if efibootmgr worked for you before, I'm not sure why it would stop working, or why an existing entry might disappear. (Some EFIs do delete entries that they detect are no longer valid. This shouldn't have happened with a whole-disk dd copy, but if you duplicated the partition table and then used dd to copy partitions, it might well have happened to you. I suppose it's conceivable that the firmware detected the change from one physical disk to another, too, and deleted the original entry because of that change.)
I referenced the rEFInd page here: http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/installing.html#windows and followed the procedure to install an entry for rEFInd from Windows.  I was able to add an entry no problem through windows.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this doesn't work?  Nothing has changed about the system other than the disk.
It's unclear from your post whether the entry you created in Windows now works. If it does, then don't sweat it; just keep using that entry, and if you need to make changes and efibootmgr doesn't work in the future, plan to use either Windows or the bcfg command from an EFI version 2 shell.

  • How do you delete a MegaRAID logical volume?

I have a G5 Xserve with the MegaRAID card and three 250gb disks.  When it was installed years ago we created several Raid 5 logical volumes that used up all the space on the disks.  We're repurposing the system and I would like to simplify things by combining most of the smaller volumes into one big volume.  There are no user files left in any of the current volumes so I thought I could dismount the volumes and then use a "megaraid -delete" function to delete them and then create a new bigger one. However there doesn't seem to a delete function in megaraid.  Does anyone know how to do this short of backing up the root partition that wasn't going to be affected and redoing the logical volumes during a reinstall of the OS?
    Thanks.
