Creating PDF forms in Preview??

Do I HAVE to have another application other than Preview (e.g. Adobe Acrobat, or something) to create PDF forms? I'm trying to do a questionnaire-type thing, and so far haven't been successful in creating one. Thanks.

I know how to save things as PDF, it's just I'd like to create a form that people can fill in, and I'd like to do it as a PDF document that I can email out.

  • How do I use auto-form recognition to create PDF forms in Acrobat XI?

I used to use Acrobat 9 to create PDF forms that would allow me to fill in text into the fields that were created.  Acrobat XI seems to have changed the way this function is performed.  Previously, I could run an auto form recognition wizard, do some minor tweaking, and be done.  Now, when I attempt to follow the process in Acrobat XI, I get the following message that pops up:  "No new form field annotations were detected.", and no fields get created.  I could do this manually, but the process of doing so is very clunky and cumbersome.  Once I create a new text field, I must then go back and resize it.  This would not be a problem if I was only working with a few fields on a single page, but I have a six page document with multiple fields to create (text fields, check box fields, etc.).  Perhaps I'm missing something, but there seems to be no simple way to do this anymore.  It's making me want to just install Acrobat 9, so that I will have back the feature that I used to have.  I'm using Acrobat XI on Mac, but I'm assuming the function should be the same in Windows.  I can use Preview on the Mac to simply type in the text that I need, but I was hoping to pass along the PDF so that others can use it as well.  This is not just a one time thing.

There are no APIs for C# and external applications for this conversion.  There is however an API for Acrobat plugins to perform this operation.   So, if necessary, you could write a custom plugin (that calls the API you need) and expose that via some form of IPC to your C# app.

Created PDF form in Acrobat XI Pro, but HELP fields disappear when I save FCDT file to PDF. Please help. Thanks!

I am not aware of a field type "Help" within a PDF form. I do not see it as a form field that can be added in the form edit mode.
Forms Central forms do not support all the features of Acrobat forms.
Are you talking about the "Tool Tips" or a hidden field that only shows when one enters a field and is hidden upon exiting the field.

  • Filling out a pdf form with preview

I need to fill out some government forms which are of course in a pdf format and they want them typed.  Before i go looking for a typewriter at the antique store, isn't there a way to do it and print it retaining the forms format?  Preview will allow me to do about 3 lines and then stops allowing input.  I've tried the google crap and from there the apache odt crap.  Tried it on a PC too with growing frustration and zero accomplished.

Preview will allow me to do about 3 lines and then stops allowing input.
That is quite strange. I fill out pdf forms with Preview, and it allows me to put as much text in as I want. I wonder if the problem is something inherent in the particular form you are trying to annotate. You might try Skim ( Download Skim for Mac - PDF Reader and note-taker for scientific papers. MacUpdate.com ) which is an app I used to use to annotate pdfs until I discovered that that functionality was already present in Preview. I don't know if you can post that form here or elsewhere and I could try to annotate it with Preview.

  • HT2506 Font size filling out a PDF form in Preview?

Hello. Anyone know if I can change Font size when filling out a PDF form in Preview? If so, how? Thanks a lot.

Whilst in the Preview application, press "Shift - Command - A" (⇧⌘A) simultaneously to show the markup toolbar, or click View, and select "show markup toolbar". There is an icon "A" near the right hand side of the now visible markup toolbar, click this icon to reveal all the font options.

  • Creating PDF forms in Frame (switch from  Word?)

Here's another "can I switch from Word" question. I am an old (5.5) Frame ACE now in a new job where we use Word. Frame would be a much better choice in many ways, for many reasons.
I could use some help figuring out whether Frame creates forms that convert easily to PDF. As an end product, what we need is a PDF form with a large number of fixed-length text fields; users must be able to download the form and fill it in at their leisure, either all at once or in stages, saving their work as they go.
These files are currently constructed in Word out of tables. They are a terrible mess and must be recreated from scratch. If Frame handles forms well, we can start that work fresh in Frame and dump Word completely. (This is a question I could answer for myself in a few minutes if I could download a trial. Bad timing.)
Can somebody with a current copy of Frame tell me how it handles forms and whether it's possible to use Frame to create PDF forms with plenty of fixed-length text fields, some of them quite long?
Your help is much appreciated. Thank you!
    V. B. Beck

    Thank you, Sheila.
Users are most likely to simply have Adobe Reader.
Sorry to be asking for so much help--it is rather maddening not to be able to download the trial and take a quick look for myself.
Are form fields defined directly within Frame, or is it necessary to hack the PDF? If within Frame, how is length of input defined--by number of characters? Or, as with LiveCycle Designer, can you "limit length to visible area"?
Thanks as always and in advance for the help.

  • Creating PDF forms: possible in InDesign?

    Hi there
I'd like to create PDF forms to be used for email questionnaires and surveys. The last time I looked into it I found that I needed to create the PDF first and then use another application (I can't remember the name) to add the fields for the form. I found it to be a little clumsy, and didn't have the layout control that I do with InDesign. Is there a way of creating forms entirely in InDesign?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Graham

.. then use another application (I can't remember the name) to add the fields ..
    That would be Acrobat Pro.
Nothing ID can do for you here. You still create the PDF with a layout package, and add form fields (which are a PDF feature, not a layout thing) with Acrobat. Fortunately, Acrobat has a nearly magical Form Field wizard that'll help you through that process as painless as possible.

  • Create PDF form sancer show "IsCapAllowed"

Why I use create PDF form sancer, my Adobe Pro XI will show "IsCapAllowed", and then show "Runtime Error!" and termination, please support.

    Hi ngai_951127,
Are you able to scan using the software included with the scanner, or does this error only occur when you scan from Acrobat? Have you been able to scan from Acrobat previously? What OS and version of Acrobat are you using? So many questions, I know!
Please make sure that your scanner driver is up-to-date and appropriate for the OS that you're using. And, if the error persists, you can try repairing your Acrobat installation.
Let us know how it goes.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Prevent Mac users from opening a PDF form in Preview

When I create an AcroForm, it does not behave the same when someone fills it out in Preview, and when I receive the completed form back from them, some of the information in the form fields is missing.
Is there a way to prevent Mac users from opening the form in Preview? Or to give them a message that the form needs to be filled out using Reader?

You can't stop them doing it (except by standing next to their computer with a heavy stick).
You could consider having a large field on the page warning that the file is not to be used (or whatever), which is hidden using Acrobat JavaScript.
Be aware that we are now dealing with a very large set of PDF readers.
Included with computers: Mac OS Preview, Windows Reader.
    Included with browsers: Chrome, Firefox.
    Included with portable devices.
Anyone who gets a computer these days in fact gets a PDF viewer which is bad with forms. You need to give them a compelling reason to download extra software. (Or, frankly, give up on PDF forms. I think their day has passed for a general audience who could fill in a browser form).

  • PDF Forms in Preview Not working

Using Lion and Preview to modify an existing PDF Form from my company and found that when I fill in a text field with mulitple lines it looks correct until I click to the next field.  At that moment all of the multiple lines compress onto each other into what looks like a jumble of characters.  When I print the filled out form it looks the same.  If I go back into the text field to edit the lines look normal, and again if I click out of the field it compresses the text again.  I tried downloading Adobe Acrobat Reader and it worked fine.  It appears to be a problem with lion's preview feature.
    Entering Text:
    Selecting Next Field:
    Any Suggestions.

I have the same problem where preview squishes the lines together.  It seems it is on 1/2 spacing instead of 1 line spacing.  To correct this I have to double space to get it to look single space.  I created the fillable form in Acrobat X as multiline.
This first screenshot is text typed into the fillable form.
This is the result when I click out of the form - it returns squished.
I add returns and make the form entry double space.
Now the result with double spacing in the filliable space makes it single space.
    Very annoying!

  • Create pdf forms from a xml file for follow up information

Forgive my amateurishness, I have a simple .xml that was created with excel with name, address, date of service, age, dob, account #, unit, and business name.  I need a form to be pre-populated with the .xml data but have other fields (mainly Yes/No check boxes) that need to be populated by another user.  This user would then finish filling out the form and return it to me via email.  I have created the form in LC Designer ES2 and created it with Acrobat Pro X.  However when I attempt to import data I can only see the first .xml record.  So my question is, how do I create multiple .pdf forms for each .xml record?  Do I need to use Java within LC Designer?  Or use Adobe Pro?  I am not afraid to attempt to code, (I have many excel programs that batch print to .pdf using vb).
    Thank you in advance

I don't play with forms enough to give an answer. However, you might search the Forms sub-forum for a possible solution. You might also find better answers there, though many of the forms experts drop by here too.

  • Creating pdf forms from a Word doc that will need to be edited in the future

Ok, I searched everywhere for an answer to this situation... and I want to know if there is a work around.
Basically, I have a word document. I will use this Word document to create a application form. So I will manually create fields where needed after I convert the document to pdf.
Now here is the issue... at some point, the Word document will have to be changed... maybe a date or an address or something. This would mean I would have to change the original Word document, re-create the form (adding all the fields again) and re-publish it.
Can I somehow edit the text in the pdf (with the fields already in place) without having to change the original word file and re-create the form?
Has anyone had this problem? Am I doing something wrong? Or is there an assumption that the original Word document you use to create your form (pdf) will not be changed at a later date?
    Thanks.
    Quinn

Ok, sorry if I haven't quite figured this out.
When I create a pdf form, AA can detect some fields and automatically creates them. This is great. For other fields, I have to create them. No problem.
So here I have Document A (MS Word) and my new pdf form (Document B).
I edit Document A and change the date in the header let's say. I re-create my pdf form (Document C).
How will Document C remember to re-associate the fields I created in Document B? Won't I have to start all over again?
This is my question. If the answer is no, then I just have to hope that when I create the new form, AA can figure out as many fields as possible (and selection choices such as bullet, check marks, etc).
    Thanks again for your help.
    Quinn
