Critical Keynote widget bug on iBooks Author 2.2

Hello,
I think I found a bug on ibooks Author 2.2. If a Keynote widget is added to a .iba document created on IBA 2.2, it cannot be previewed in iBooks 3.2 for iOS 7 or iBooks 1.0.1 for OSX Mavericks. The widget only works when viewed on iOS 8 or OSX Yosemite.

Has anybody experienced this bug? Any ideas or fixes?
I think this should be fixed ASAP because there are still thousands of users reading ibooks on iPads with iOS 7 or earlier installed.

Confirmed. This isn't the only time we've had issues with the keynote widget. Because of this and a number of other issues and glitches with ibooks / ibooks author we've stopped recommending it to our clients as a platform for professional use. A pity as it showed great promise at first. The support is non existent (of course) and the software may or may not work depending on so many factors that it seems more like a hobby software project than something published by a professional outfit.

What resolution is the keynote file? I found that when ibooks author scales the keynote file to fit into the widget, the hyperlinks dont scale, or at least not at the same rate as the resto of the document. You may therefore find that the hyperlinks are there - just not in teh place you expect.

I have the same question as VideoImage. I would like the controls to appear in some of my videos so that the reader can speed them up or slow them down. This would save me having to run them through iMovie at 4X say and saving them that way. As far as I can see, the video fast forward, fast reverse, go to end, go to beginning controls only appear in the Widget inspector. What is their purpose then?

Why aren't widgets enabled in iBooks author 2.0?

Hello- I am working on iBookks Author 2.0, and have the latest OS X version, but the Widgets are not enabled on the tool bar and I cannot find any info on activating/downloading/etc... Any help would be greatly appreciated- thanks!

This may sound like a dumb question, but have you currently got a book file open?
If so, also make sure that you've clicked on one of the thumbnails on the left of the screen - either way the widgets should be enabled.
If not, reinstall iBooks Author.

Strange Bug in iBook Author?

Last year I created an iBook lab manual for my students. The file size of the final book was around 750MB. The file size proved to be too large and cumbersome to download and took a while for it to show up in iBooks.
This year I decided to chop up the manual. I made a duplicate of the original file, cut out the later chapters, renamed it, and posted the first chapter online as an ibook. The book dowloaded and appeared in the iBooks app with no problem.
The problem began when I repeated the same process for chapter 2. I duplicated the original file, deleted the unecessary chapters, renamed it, the posted it online. This time, when the students downloaded the ibook, the iBook app launched chapter 1 and completely ignored chapter 2. The chapter 2 ibook appeared to have gone through the proper download process, but as soon as the download was finished, the app launched, Chapter 1 opened, and chapter 2 was nowhere to be found.
I finally had to create a brand new file and cut and paste the chapters from the original file. This is the only solution I came up with. This didn't take a lot of work on my part; duplicating the original file, trimming the fat and renaming it is just easier.
Anyone have an idea what had occurred or why the iBook app refused to see Chapter 2 as a separate and new file?

Ibook Author audio (AAC) media widget rejected in validation??

We have a complex image, video and music book from the Arctic created on ibooks author. Everything seems to validate through itunes producer on delivery except for this error message.
ERROR ITMS-9000: "Files of type audio/x-m4a are not allowed outside of widgets: assets/media/Arctic_master_music.m4p" at Book (MZItmspBookPackage)
We've done everything in widget sizing, placement, audio encoding to aac from QT, itunes and compressor. We can't get past there error? Is there a bug in the ibook author or am I missing someting.
Any ideas. The videos work fine, just the audio clip/

John, as you can see by my previous response we haven't solved the audio error ITMS-9000, audio outside of widget. But we haven't forced the issue as of late.
We had so much video with audio, that we pulled the page with the music pieces. Our idea was to see if the book without the error on the audio would pass and it did. We had to make some other corrections and link fixes, but the video and images all passed. I was impressed that someone was actually going through page by page.
So once the book is up, we're going to start with the music (audio only) from scratch, strictly following the process that apple outlines. We will resubmit it and if it won't pass the error, then I have only one specific issue for myself and apple to deal with. I have a feeling it's something I'm doing in the music conversion, but we've compressed it from QT, from iTiunes and from compressor following their guidelines all with the same error of this audio placed within their media widget. Now maybe with their recent ibook author updates things have been fixed. See I have this little feeling it's a bug in ibook author compiler. But over many years where I jumped out and blamed someone and been wrong, I have to be sure it's me and not them.
So if anyone has had success in audio only book elements placed in ibook author media widget and successfully got it published, tell us your secret. Please. Or if others are having the same issue, then we need together to find an answer quickly.
Once I find the answer on this issue I'll be sure to post the steps to our success.

Can only view page of of Keynote slideshow in ibooks author

When I place Keynote slide show in iBooks author and then try to preview it on my iPad, I see the first image I dobut cannot page through the remaining slides. Why? What am I doing wrong? I have spent hours on this one. No success.

How to reset an iBooks Author Html Widget?

Hi folks!
I'm using with great pleasure Adobe Edge Animate 1.0 to make Html Widgets for Apple iBooks Author!
In a composition, I've defined this variable:

All it works but...what if I want that - when I go out from the widget on iBooks on iPad - the track pauses?
I've coded this in my index.html file inside the widget:

I suspect the file is corrupted in some form.
Which could be a few keystrokes away from fixing or days of BS&T, sorry. There's no way to know, especially from here.
If you're handy with a text editor, crack into the xml and compare it to a behaving file to see if you can spot the issue(s). Or, do the same and carefully graft sections from it to a new file until you manage to manually rebuild.
In the end, tho, I think your time at this point is best spent simply redoing from scratch. If you have further questions, please start your own, unique thread so you can better track, close if solved, etc.
And again, to everyone....if your work has value, be sure to have a tested and reliable backup in place at all times.

No Sound on Interactive Keynote Widget?

OBJECTIVE: I am trying to imbed an interactive Keynote Widget into an iBook with short audio clips that play after transitions between slides. The Keynote presentation consists of 8 slides that generally consist of an image, a couple of buttons (shapes with associated links to specific slides), a text box or two, and some have inserted audio .m4a files (less than 5 seconds in length). The audio objects are set to 'start after transition'. The overall presentation is set as a 'Links only' presentation type.
PROBLEM: After testing succesfully in Keynote, I saved the presentation, dragged it into iBooks author, and previewed it in iBooks (running on OSX 10.9.2 Mavericks). The widget works splendidly... except the sound. Audio objects aren't activated by transitions. No sound at all out of the Keynote Widget.
WHAT I'VE TRIED: I have checked that sound is working right on my Mac. In fact, Audio widgets on the next page of the same iBook work fine. I changed the audio files in the keynote presentation with a different one that was already working in my iBook as an audio widget. I have tried putting the keynote presentation into a untouched standard Apple template. No sound at all from the Keynote Widget. I also looked for solutions in online help files, Apple's Developer Forums for iBooks Author, and here in this section of the Apple Support Communities. I only found two similar questions/problems neither with a posted resolution (https://discussions.apple.com/message/22443281#22443281 and https://discussions.apple.com/message/22444086#22444086).
TECH SPECS:
iBooks version 1.0.1
iBooks Author version 2.1.1
Keynote version 6.1
OSX version 10.9.2
Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong? Or is it an inherent limitation in the program? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

That being the case, Apple has stated that recorded narration will not work in the keynote widget (see iBooks Author: About the Keynote widget - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5067).
Self-Playing and Recorded presentations
Self-Playing presentations and Recorded presentations with voiceover narration may not work as expected. Readers will be able to view and manually advance your presentation, but recorded narration and timings won’t be available.
The same article seems to indicate that some audio files should work in the widget, evidently as sound objects.
Keynote files can contain media—such as images, movies, and audio—but don’t use a Keynote file just to add media to your book.
I haven't been able to figure out how to get it to work yet though. If we can figure out how to get sound objects to work you could still put the audio in your widget, just break it up into a seperate sound file for each slide, and advance to next slide on click. Someone would have to figure out how to get the sound objects to play like they should though...
With regard to the other audio files: That is weird that Apple told you to use .m4p format for audio. Their online documentation says to use m4a. The following is an excerpt from iBooks Author: supported file formats - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2838.
Video and audio files: M4V, M4ANote: For the Media widget, you can add a video file or an audio file (in a format QuickTime supports) to your book. You can convert other types of files using iMovie, QuickTime Player, or Compressor. For the HTML widget, the suggested file formats are MP4 video files and M4A audio files.
Either the tech who emailed you saying to use .m4p is mixed up, or their online documentation is wrong.
Please let us know if changing to m4p works for you. That may help others out.

Bookmarks not working in iBooks author

I am unable to create a bookmark in iBooks author. The “+”-sign in the bookmarks pane of the inspector is faded/unclickable when I select an element on one of the pages (figure, text box, image etc.). I have been reading up on solutions and workarounds, but have yet to find one that works.
I have chapters, sections, and pages in my book but cannot add bookmarks to any of these. I am using the “Photo book”-layout, could this be the problem?

I finally managed to find a workaround for this, which I thought I'd share since I know a lot of others are struggling with this too.
In my case, I'm working with a photo book style template, with full sized background images on every page. I wanted to link from one page to the next, but as mentioned, I was unable to create bookmarks on any of the pages of my book.
What I found worked was selecting one of my large background images, then going to the "Widget inspector" (farthest right in the inspector panel), selecting the "Layout" tab and checking "title" and in the label dropdown selecting "Figure". By doing so, I'm defining my image as a figure. I can then select a portion of text on another page, go to the hyperlinks panel in the inspector and in the drop down menu specify that I want to link to a figure, my image then appears in the figure list and I can click to link to it.
Now, this led to a second problem - changing the hyperlink color (predefined as underlined light blue). This is yet another (of many) bugs in iBooks author. I found a way to solve this too; open the Styles Drawer (select it from the "View" menu on the top left of the formatting toolbar). Select the text you want to format (in this case your hyperlink). Click on the little arrow next to the "Figure reference" style (which is the defined style on the text link) and choose "Create character style from selection". In the pop-up that opens, click on "Include these character attributes" and at the bottom left, click on "Select Overrides", then uncheck the overrides for underline and color. Click on OK (I find that you need to have at least one character attribute checked in order to be able to click OK so make sure you have the font and size checked). Now you've created a new formatting style that you can apply to all your hyperlinks but it won't look like you've done anything in iBooks Author - you'll ned to preview the book to see your formatted text (yup, another bug...).
Let's hope Apple get these bugs fixed for the next version, and soon!

Keynote widget - animation limitations?

I am trying to create a fairly complex animation in Keynote for use in iBooks Author, where objects have actions (a lot of Move, some Rotate, among others). I know that there are some things that don't import...but not sure what, and I can't find this specific limitation anywhere.
I am finding that when I import my Keynote into the iBooks Author, not all the elements of my animation come with it. Specifically, it turns my Move on a Curve animation into a straight animation. Does anyone know if this is a hard and fast limitation of iBooks Author widgets? I'm trying to animate a hurricane icon, specificially, and hurricanes do NOT run in a straight line!! So it'd make my animation pretty lame, to have my rotating moving hurricane approach the coastline in a straight line, instead of like a real path of a hurricane...
Any way to fix this? Or am I totally screwed and just have to live with straight Move animations on my objects?

I'd already read that, but I couldn't tell if what I was doing was on that list or not. Specifically:

Move In or Move Out
Pivot
Scale

Nothing on that list says, Action -> Move, or Action -> Rotate, but Rotate and Move are working in my imported Keynote file...just not the Curve part of the Move action I created.
The way I figure it, I'll have to do a bunch of smaller, straight moves and that'll work OK...not great, but OK. But I wish there was a WAY more comprehensive list of what works and what doesn't, that page does NOT list everything that works, it appears to me.

Use of Edge Composition in iBooks Author, a question

Why does ibooks author automatically resize all images of a gallery?

The point here is, I have more than one graphic files (not pictures taken by a camera) to put into one gallery widget of an iBooks Author document. Unfortunately, not all figures have the same height/width aspect ratio. If I put them together in the gallery, some of them have cropped widths others have cropped heights. Impossible to losslessly fit all into the same gallery. If I scale alle figures to the same width, the result is acceptable for the figure with the highest heigth, all other figures are cropped again.
Well in a first time, I was not that much concerned, but the iBooks Author Quality check refused to publish such eBooks, where some picutes appear cropped in the small view (not in the full-screen view).
Now, why is the iBA software automatically sizing all images of a gallery w.r.t. the center of an image? It would be of much more help, to leave some white background boarders on images of un-equal height, as long as the width of all images is exactly the same. The crop-pan function would then be useful to individually place a smaller-than-the-rest image in that frame of its larger precedecor image.
Can this autosize function be turned off? Am I really forced to paste smaller images into a white image of the maximum height/width of the galery's largest image?

If you have differently shaped (height/width) images that you want to place in one gallery....
The first image you place will determine the shape (max height and width) of your gallery mask, so choose it wisely.
Before you add each image to the gallery go to photoshop and:
1. Size the IMAGE to be at the max height OR width of your gallery mask -- do this if you want at least one dimension (height or width) to fit all the way across or up and down in the gallery mask.
2. Size the CANVAS to the same height and width of your first image (the size of your gallery mask).
I hope this makes sense and is helpful. Yes, it's ridiculous, but it's the only way I found to make images of different dimensions fit in a gallery.

Can't advance Keynote Widget on iBooks Author

Using Keynote 9 (version 5.1.1) and OS X Lion (10.7.2) and experiencing problems with Keynote Widget for iBooks Author.
The drag-and-drop feature works fine; I see the first slide - but the arrow button appears to be grayed out. Can't advance through any of my (pretty basic) transitions.
I don't have an iPad, so I can't see if the iBooks file works on that device, but I figured that the Keynote Widget should show some functionality in iBooks Author since both an Interactive Image Widget and QuickTime movie I added elsewhere appears to work. [That image clicks just fine in iBooks Author.]
Also, when I click "Show transport controls" in the inspector, I see arrows and 1/7 (number of slides) - but clicking still doesn't seem to work.
Do I need to be using an iPad to see this particular functionality? Or is this some sort of silly user-error? (Or both?)
Any hints are much appreciated.

Even so, I encourage you to reconsider the use of the word "clearly," which comes across as needlessly condescending.

Is there something like the questions widget in ibooks author in keynote?

Does anyone know how if there is a review widget within Keynote as there is in iBooks Author that can show more than 6 questions and can I edit this so that multiple ticks can be shown and show more than 6 questions?
I also want to know if I can alter the "Check Answer" button.

The interactive system in Keynote uses hyperlinks, click a button and it will jump to another slide, that's the sum of the amount of interactivity available.
An every day scenario; I want to review the scores to 5 questions with a multiple choice of 3 answers.
This requires 5 slides one question per slide.
I cannot click a button on slide 6, requesting to show the number of correct and wrong answers to all 5 questions. There is no database or dynamic library available to Keynote to allow a presentation of the data.
