    Hi,
Please <b>read the rules of engagement</b> before you post.
    <b>Step 1: Finding An Answer</b>
Rule number one: Try to find the answer first. There are tons of resources out there, show that you have tried to find the answer. A question that shows that the person is willing to try and help themselves is more likely to be answered than one which simply demands information. Tell us what you have done to try and solve the problem yourself - often we can learn from that too!
Search the forums, the articles, the blog posts and the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) in the Wiki for your topic.
<b>- Do not ask to send you an email.</b>
The question you ask and the solution to it is often also interesting for other users of the community. If you ask somebody to send you the answer per email, you deprive others of also learning to know the answer. Therefore any requests for sending material or answers to an email address will be modified by the forum moderators.
    Thank you.

    J.K. ROFLing,
    What do you suggest littleshoulders?
I have made suggestions, whereas others have not but have also asked for changes here in regards to posting topic probems.
A suggestion I have made was to force the user whichever way they enter discussions to fill in a form that directs the user to the most appropriate forum. This doesn't need to be a long form but I'm sure you have seen this type of form on other sites that narrow a search down.
I'm certainly not an expert (I assume Apple has enough on staff to handle the logistics) and would only venture a guess as to what might be asked on the form to narrow the search.
Most importantly, I can't believe that the form would be any more labor intensive on the user than navigating through the Discussion pages to get to an appropriate forum. And quite frankly, even if it were it would certainly direct the user to an appropriate forum saving huge amounts of wasted time trying to get their support.
    "Computer: iMac G3
    OS version: OS X v10.3.9
What is you computer problem or support topic: Terminal problem"
I'm sure there would have to be other menu options (pop-ups and user filled info) for this type of search process but that is an abbreviated example for this excercise.
These directing forms are used all over the internet to direct the user to the appropriate product, support or otherwise.
I contend that the way that Discussions is presented currently that it needs this type of user interface to work properly.
In closure, I have to say that I don't believe in status quo and think that any change for the better is welcome and I bet all those novice users who struggle with posting topics correctly would agree. They obviously need more help than what is currently offered with posting.
    regards,
    littleshoulders

Although I appreciate the sentiments and would speed the initial diagnosis. I do feel it would put some members off, in particular ones who have had a issue for some time and more so customers who have had the "helpline" experience and have been passed pillar to post.  Being directed to another link comes across for me, as a bit "helpline".  I feel at this point, many would want some 1 to 1  (therapy) and they are being listened too with regards to there broadband issue.
I've seen users irate very recently, just by a simple request of hub stats posted by copy & paste.  We all do it, however it can come across, corporate avoidance (helpline).  At times I have PM,  something similar with regards to our end responsibilities, depending how I believe, they are presenting themselves on the forum

  • Read This BEFORE you update to iWeb '08

iWeb '08 introduces a lot of features that we've all been waiting for but, before you jump right in there, you should realize a lot of people are losing their original websites.
When you first launch iWeb '08 and upload an existing website it converts your domain.sites file to domain.sites2 file. Due to bugs in this software release, these converted files seem to be corrupted in various ways.
Once your domain.sites file has been converted there is no way back.
    You MUST back them up.
If you want to continue working on your old sites you will have to retain your copy of iWeb '06. When you update to iWeb '08 your original application is replaced so, if you have not run the update, move your old iWeb application out of the "Applications" folder.
If you have already uploaded the new version and still have your iLife '06 disk then you are OK as long as you have made a "safe" backup of your original domain.sites file(s).

iWeb '08 Calamity: Lost site content, crashes, significantly increased resource usage, more
Backup your Domain files Make a copy of this file -- located in ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain -- before attempting to update to or use iWeb '08. The program is causing serious issues for a number of readers (as discussed below), and may delete or make inoperable parts of your stored Web site(s). Saving this file can mean the difference between losing or maintaining your current site data.
Missing site elements including photo galleries The most dire issue users are experiencing after updating to iWeb '08 is the sudden disappearance of various site elements, particularly photo galleries. Many users have reported that entire swaths of their sites are completely missing after launching the update and attempting to work with their pre-existing site(s) file.
Crashes A surprisingly high number of users are reporting repeated crashes after updating to iWeb '08.
Ironically, it appears that many of the crashes can be resolved by removing the file ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain. In essence, it looks like iWeb '08 is choking on the sites file created by older versions of iWeb. So move this file to a separate location, and try launching iWeb '08 again.
Increased resource usage/slowness Users are reporting that the new version of iWeb uses significantly more memory and processor time than its predecessor.

  • ISync 2.2 and Mac OS X 10.4.6 Update released: READ THIS before installing

Apple has released iSync 2.2 as part of the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Update package, and it has serious ramifications for current or first-time users of iSync. READ this information below before you perform the installation. This information is extracted from Technical Information Library article 303419, found here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303419
iSync 2.2: Read before updating to Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later, or before first sync
iSync 2.2, included with the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Update, works with many phones. However, if you have an existing phone that you sync with iSync in Mac OS X 10.4 through 10.4.5, there are some important steps you should follow before you update to Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later, as well as after you update.
Before you update to Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later
    1. Make sure that all of the contact and calendar data that you want to sync is on your computer.
    2. Perform a sync with your devices before upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4.6 to make sure the information on your computer is up to date, and to resolve any conflicts between your devices and computer.
    3. If you have modified iSync or installed third-party software to support your specific model of phone, or if if iSync 2.2 specifically adds support for your specific model of phone, you should consider removing your phone from iSync, undoing these changes and uninstalling that software before upgrading. Your phone will not work with iSync after applying the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Software Update and your third party software will need to be updated.
Note: Reudo's Sync for Mac is not affected and does not need to be uninstalled prior to updating.
If you skip these steps, you will see this message after upgrading: "Plug-in for this phone model is missing. Install that phone's plug-in if you want iSync to support it."
    4. Make sure that your phone is configured to use its memory to store contacts instead of a SIM card. The steps on how to do this vary from phone to phone—consult your device's documentation for how to check its configuration, and if necessary how to change your phone to store contacts in its memory.
    5. Make sure your phone has the correct date and time set.
    6. Make sure that you have a current backup of your Address Book and iCal data.
Refer to the article for additional instructions and an illustrated example of the steps to perform before installing the update.

  • Please Read This Before Wasting Your Life With BT

    Hi,
I eagerly awaited my 17Mb promised Internet access from BT.  On February 7th 2012 it was active, set up and was delighted, close to 17Mb access.  Unfortunately over a period of 5 days it went down in steps to just 2Mb speed. Called the people in India and was taken through a whole lot of ill informed 'tests' of my system to try and determine what was wrong.  I was even told to change the wireless channel even though I had advised I was connected via cable.  The trick is to get it escalate and as soon as possible.
Once escalated you will probably be contacted by someone who knows what they are talking about from Ireland.  I do actually know what I am talking about and so was able to convince the man at the other end of the phone that there was a problem at the exchange.  A few days later an engineer turned up, checked everything in my house before confirming there was a problem at the exchange.  Quick phone call to get the man at the exchange to put 'interleaving' onto the line and problem solved, stable at 17Mb.  Happy, well nearly.
Set up my BT Home Hub 3 with four Edimax Repeaters to give good wireless coverage all around the house, worked perfectly........For about two hours.  Believing it was my network set up I stripped it all apart reconfiguring everything.  I tried WDS Bridge, all the repeating options I had, a different ASDSL+ modem, a Netgear router connected to the Home Hub to better control DCHP.  All gave exactly the same results, perfect operation for around two hours then the whole nextwork collapsed.
Onto advanced networking set ups, different SSID, channel separation, blocking certain IP addresses nothing made any difference.  I then spent a few days searching the Internet, there is not a lot of published information but there was an underlying trend pointing to BT and DNS issues.  OK so I have to get a dynamic DNS account, why?  Because BT's is useless and is the cause of the continued failure of my network and probably the cause of the regular interruption of your service.
I set up an account with NoIP, set the BT Home Hub 3 to to Dynamic DNS, type in the few details required and it connects immediately.  Did I see any change, yes my network is now completely stable and I enjoy very fast Internet access.
Am I happy, no not really.  Thge network set up I have today is the same as I had on 7th February and it is perfectly stable.  No where on any of the forum do BT acknowledge that their network DNS is rubbish, completely rubbish.  If you are having a problem get up a free NoIP Dynamic DNS account, if you are not having problems then get a free NoIP Dynamic DNS account because it is only a matter of time before you are plagued by the curse of the BT DNS.

This has worked perfectly for me. I can't believe the difference.

  • ROKU SoundBridge users read this BEFORE installing iTunes7

The following was emailed to me today from ROKU
" With the release of iTunes 7.0 yesterday, Apple has changed some of the underlying technology that allows the SoundBridge to communicate directly with iTunes. We hope to have an iTunes 7.0- compatible release of the SoundBridge software soon; however, at this time all SoundBridges are incompatible with the music sharing feature of iTunes 7.0. We recommend that SoundBridge owners wait for a SoundBridge update before upgrading to iTunes 7.0. Users wishing to upgrade to iTunes 7.0 (or who have already upgraded) can install the free Firefly media server to share music libraries with SoundBridge. Firefly is available at http://www.rokulabs.com/firefly"
Had I have known earlier it would have saved a lot of time reloading iTunes 6

    +"I can't emphasize this enough:+
+It is recommended that you backup your system prior to installing any updates.+
+He who does not backup can't say he hasn't been warned!"+
Aw come on "a brody".... where's the fun in that? Anyway, I think you are spitting into the wind. Anyone who is not aware, at this point in computer history, of the fragility of digital data is probably not going to even be reading this. I'm afraid we are in for another round of "disaster" and "catastrophe" and "10.5.1 bricked my computer" and "10.5.1 ate my files" and "my mother had a hernia and it's Apple's fault" threads.

  • Read This Before Updating To 10.1

Read this link before upgrading tp Final Cut Pro 10.1:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5550
Go into System Preferencesa and disable AppStore auto install, leave it to notify you.
Feel free to add to this discussion...
Maybe this should be "pinned" to the top of this Forum? can that be done?

Answered my own question thanks Just in case anyone reads this far... rolling back to previous version was as follows:
    1. Sent iTunes 8.1 to trash (emptied trash not sure if I needed to but it felt good to flush 8.1 down the pan
    2. Removed icon from dock (as it now points to iTunes in trash)
    3. Moved Music\iTunes\iTunes Library to Music\iTunes\Previous iTunes Libraries\ and renamed it iTunes Library (8.1)
    4. Copied Music\iTunes\Previous iTunes Libraries\iTunes Library 2009-03-15 to Music\iTunes\ and renamed iTunes Library
    5. Downloaded 8.02 from http://support.apple.com/downloads/iTunes8_0_2_forMac and installed
    6. iTunes now loads in 5 secs (instead of 32 secs with 8.1!) thanks
...and remember Tim - never, ever, EVER (on pain of death!) update to latest of ANYTHING until it is at least version .01 or better still .02 (as I always get obscure problems that probably won't be reported in .01 update!) - you know it makes sense Rodney!! :o)
    Tim.

  • Ios 8.1problems?read this before tomorrow!

guys update your ipads to ios 8.1.1 my ipair version was lagging on ios 8.1 now lot smooth and no freezes!trust me guys download it now!

Sorry, but "Read the post There's a good boy" is the most patronizing thing posted in this thread. I don't think anything else compares.
Before dismissing this post in a snit, consider a couple bits of advice. They may actually help you.
Cut the rhetoric - questions or otherwise. A rant is not the best way to kick off your participation here. If you ask a question, expect it to be answered. That's what this forum is all about. No one can read your mind, only what you write. Want to rant? Get a blog. It helps no one here and is against the term of use (yeah, those again).
Most people that answer questions here do it on their own time because - shock - they actually like to help. Compared to others here I'm still a newbie after several years, limited by the time I can devote to it. But NONE of the people I have come to know in that time are point hungry as you suggest. It's rude and uninformed to suggest that's the case after a whopping month as a member here. You have too limited a perspective on the matter to have such a negative opinion.
Be kind to those who might at some point be able to help you. People are less inclined to help those who come with an agenda or an attitude.
And to your first actual request for help...
First, there is no such thing as an iPad 2 Retina. If you think that's what you have, you're mistaken. You have either and iPad 2 with a standard resolution display, or something after the iPad (3rd generation), the device on which Retina displays were introduced. Knowing which will help people to help you.
Second, if it is indeed and iPad 2, then not everyone is experiencing the same issues you claim to have. To issue a blanket statement that the release was "shoddy" or "No Improvement whatsoever on the farce that was 8.0", and to dissuade others from upgrading and potentially fixing whatever issues they may have is irresponsible. Your advice was "...don't bother wasting a couple of hours messing with this or any of the other half cocked measures that I have doggedly followed."  Why should your bad experience mean someone else should not benefit from upgrading?
My only iPad is an iPad 2. Though I had lag issues, they were not as severe as others reported, and I had none of the other problems people reported. That said, the iOS 8.1.1 update has restored my iPad 2 to pre-iOS 8 state in terms of performance. If you personally want to be helpful, let people know that it didn't work for YOU. Or better yet, ask how people have gotten on with the update. Maybe their experience can help you.
Third, if after this update you still have issues, something may really be wrong with your iPad. But before giving up, I strongly suggest you go through the update process again. As you suggested, stay away from restoring from backup. It may be that something there is actually causing the problem. Follow these instructions and see if it helps at all. You may have done it all before but do it again.
Make sure your using the most recent iTunes version.
Place your iPad into DFU mode
Plug your device into your computer with a USB cable
    Turn off the device
Hold the Power button for 3 seconds.
Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds.
Release the Power button but keep holding the Home button.
After about 15 seconds iTunes will say that it has detected a device in Recovery Mode.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support. Be sure to restore as a new device.

  • TimeCapsule security information - READ THIS before copying data!!!!

I bought my TimeCapsule yesterday, spent all night (literally) copying data off some old usb/firewire drives and then was struck by the "Not everyone on my network should have access to all of this stuff!" moment.
I had been reading these posts - and realize that I was going to have to be the one to bite the bullet and experiment with security.  I have it working - and it seems to work just fine.  Here's what I did.
The timecapsule install program guides you through setting the device up. But ... what it does not do (BAD BAD DEVELOPERS!!!!  I want to hit you with the stupid stick!!) is tell you about security.  I assumed, like others that have posted here, that I would be able to set security permissions on different folders just like any other Mac drive. NOPE!  Doesn't work. You have the options at the bottom of "get info" on the drive folder, but .. it doesn't do anything!!!
All is not lost though read on.
Relaunch the airport utility (Applications->Utilities->Airport Utility) select your TimeCapsule device, and this time select the "Manual Setup" button at the bottom of the window.
At the very top you will see a blue disk on the toolbar labeled "Disks".  When you select that you will then have three things to choose from - Disks, FileSharing, and Accounts.  Click FileSharing.
You will see a dropdown called "Secure Shared Disks". By default it will say "With disk password".  Select "With accounts".  You will get a very ominous message that says (paraphrasing here) that if you do this you will loose all existing data on the drive.  You know what?  It means it.  You do.  Gone.  All gone.  I copied data all night - and now I have to do it again. Did I mention how mad I am at the people at Apple and their extreme oversight about this?  The "wizard" should have provided a LOT more information about security - or at least their documentation.  But I digress.
Once you have picked "With accounts" and clicked "OK" on the scary message, select "Accounts".  TimeCapsule will not automatically pick up on the accounts on your mac or anyone elses.  You have to enter them here.  But it's really no big deal, when users connect the first time they can save their info so they don't have to do it again.  Anyway - put in all the accounts and passwords you think you might want - you can add more as needed later.
At this point the utility restarts TimeCapsule.  Once it comes up connect to the drive (select it in finder and then "connect as"). You will be prompted for an account name and password - you know what to do here.
Now here is what you will find.  Remember the disk folder that was visible to anyone and everyone when you first set TimeCapsule up?  Well, it's still there.  But empty (actually, I think the data is still on the drive but you can't see it and I have no idea how to get it back).  It's now, more or less, a "public" folder for everyone to share (that's where my Itunes library will go) And there will be another folder - with your account name on it.  Guess what?  It's private just for you (actually for whoever is logged on with the respective account).  No one else can even see it.  I have been testing this with four different accounts and it works great!  One account will be shared by two people (a collaboration area of the drive) while at the same each will have their own private area (virtual, not physical like a partition) on the drive.
So now I am going to start copying my data (again!!) to the appropriate account folders.  Oh, there is NO admin who can see all of the accounts.
I really hope this helps someone.  I was more than a little frustrated at 4AM this morning and hope I can prevent the same for someone else.
    Have a great day!
    X

The NAS units are Fantom Drives Mega disks. Here are some things you should know:
    Pros:
Dual drive units. Can either be striped to give 1TB or RAID 1 at 500g. RAID 1 doesn't seem to slow them down.
Web interface - Obviously written by Chinese but understandable and functional.
Company support for questions has been ok. I wouldn't say great but probably better than Apple. Twice I was able to talk to a human about how to achieve something.
The iTunes server is virtually automatic. There is a public/music directory. Anything placed in there is automatically served. I decided to point my actual iTunes library to that location. Now when a song is added for any reason the server picks it up immediately.
    Cons:
Power cords are bad. The unit is best left in a remote location where nothing can touch the power cord.
Some people have had failures of these units. I personally have not. They work fine and as advertised.
Because they use a different file system it is possible to have filenames on the Mac that won't work on the NAS. I've run into this. The result is the file simply will not copy over. Change the name and it works. Avoiding key unix chars in the filename helps and keeping it reasonably short.
    My experience:
I have pounded these NAS devices with multiple copies from multiple machines and they just seem to work. Once connected they just continue to remain connected.
Like I said above I point my iTunes directory there. On reboot I have to reconnect to that drive before I start iTunes as I've been too lazy to setup any kind of auto-reconnect. Honestly I don't reboot that much so I haven't worried about it. But once connected iTunes just works perfect.
The accounts seem reasonable secure. I setup an account for a buddy and put some files in it and gave him FTP access. He was unable to get anywhere else but his directory. He could see the other directory names but could not move to them. Same result when he was here locally.

    I don't know if I'm a java guru.
I can tell you something, though.... the Java forums were instrumental in my learning what I already know... I set my sites on some cool projects, and learned alot while doing it.
Sometimes, I asked a "stupid" question. I got more out of asking "smart" questions. I don't want to insult, I do want to teach.

It has been approximately 6+ months since I've been here to poke around... and I return to find some of the problems that plague the forums (and to a certain level always will, I imagine) still here. That is..people asking vague, unanswerable questions... OR... people posting their homework that haven't even taken a stab at doing it yet...
What happens, then, is that veterans get pissed. (can I say that ??) They see constant requests for "I have to create Tower of Hanoi program...PLZZZZZZZZZ HELP" or "URGENT ! !!! ! HELP ! ! !", or "I need to write an applet that explores space and time and returns the answer to life the universe and everything... can you help?"--THEY eventually might flip...and post some interesting code... my favorite (that can be reprinted) was:
    public class YourAnswer{
    public static void main(String[] args)
       for (int i=0; i<100; i++)
         System.out.println("I will do my own homework from now on!");
}But that's not my point. My point (and if you've read this ramble so far, you're doing good) is that some of us are professional programmers. Some of us are not. Most if not 99.99% of us (that is, those who possess the answer) are not Sun employees, so:
1- We do not have to answer your question.
2- We do not have to take abuse.
3- We do not have to, or in most cases, want to, do your homework for you.
((We worked it out, you can too))
But don't leave yet. Let me define my terms.
"stupid" question: This is a question that does one or more of the following:
1- Asks us to do all of your work for you.
2- Demonstrates no effort on your part.
    3- Lacks relavent code samples
4- Lacks relavent error printouts, or has them and see -3-
5- Continually requests urgent assistance, especially when in conjunction with items 1-4
6- Has code samples, but not in "code" brackets. (ie. the word 'code' starts the sample, enclosed by square brackets, and '/code' ends the sample, enclosed by square brackets)
I leave it up to those remaining to figure out a 'smart' question.
PS- If you have perpetrated item # 6, ignorance is not an excuse. Especially NOW, as you have been told. Unformatted code is abhorrent to look at...and makes it hard to muster up the energy to help someone. Also..never post on any forum without figuring out how to format stuff first... you look more intelligent, and intelligent questions get intelligent answers...
Programming is a wonderful endeavor. I love not knowing, and then finding the answer. If you are drawn to programming, you should love the act of transforming the unknowable/undoable into the working stage. If you don't, a new profession, or major, is a recommendation.

    Damn, they erased my thread!
I'll have to find someone who made a backup of it. I
know someone said they did, but I forgot who it was.I can't remember if this was one of the good ones, or what
...but this was from your December thread dustpan.
    Cheers.

  • Please read this before posting?

First of all we need your stats so we can determine if or not their is an issue:
Please use this link http://192.168.1.254 to go to your hubs homepage:
(Heres the direct link! http://192.168.1.254/index.cgi?active_page=9116 )
    Then click on Settings:
    Then go to Advanced Settings:
    then go to Broadband:
    then go to Connection:
and then please copy and paste your adsl stats making sure you expand to show all details:
We need to determine whether you have a throughput or speed or IP profile issue, there is only one official speed tester that BT will accept for speed test and you need to go to http://www.speedtester.bt.com and then type click on the ADSL/FTTC option:
and then type in your phone number, wait for the results to be displayed:
and once the results have been displayed with your IP Profile please copy and paste the results to your post.
Also searching your exchange on http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search , this is not neccessary but can sometimes help.
Always make sure you try changing the filters this can be a common problem.  If you have a mastersocket with a split front then unscrew the bottom bit and behind there should be a hidden test socket, you usually should try to test your broadband in there to make sure your internal wiring ins't causing interference this can be one of the highest common factors of slow broadband.  Usually your broadband will be dependant on your line length from the exchange which will be based on your attenuation, so if your far from the exchange your not likely to get a great speed on ADSL.
Also dialling 17070 and pressing Option 2 to do a quiet line test will show if you have any noise on your line.  If there's any noise on your line, try changing your filter's first and then call (0800 800) 151 and report a line fault don't mention broadband and go from there.
    Happy posting!

  • Read this before purchasing a Mac...

Is the Mac Mini Core Solo with 512mb of ram, 60gb hard drive, and a SuperDrive powerful enough to use a a media server with front row and eyetv? Thanks

I know it says answered but i thought id put my 2 sense worth in.
I play high res (not 1080i) over ethernet network from my 1.6 PM with 3GB RAM using Elgato's eyehome without a studder. I can even be rendering (iMovie, Handbrake etc) on the PM while watching the eyehome.
For this reason I would think the mini's solo capabilities would allow for 1080i playback with direct connect since in my setup the ethernet is the bottleneck.
I do think that 1GB RAM would be the absolute minimum.
