Crop to specific dimensions?

Is there a way to crop to a specific dimension?  I have a 3888x2592 image and would like to crop it to 2400x1600.  Problem I am having is I can get it to 2388x1589 or 2420x1619 or finally after many tries (over a minute of attempting) got it to 2399x1599.  Is there any way to FORCE it to a specific dimension?
Also, on export I know you can resize an image, but are you able to apply a resize within lightroom itself?  Can't think of a situation where I would want to do that, but just out of curiousity...
Thanks,
Clayton

I agree with Andrzej007.  Sometimes I need a 1:1 crop
First, to those who ask, "Why not do it during export?"  Or worse, "Why would you want to do that?"....   Does it REALLY matter to you WHY I want to do a crop of a specific number of pixels?  The fact is some people really need this.
I do a lot of timelapse stuff and build videos at 1920x1080.  I shoot full frame (in my case that is 4608x3456).  I correct my shots in LR.  So, what's the best way to get my images to 1920x1080?
Here's an example image:
Well, I could crop with a fixed aspect ratio (which is 16:9) and then export with a resize to 1920x1080, which would give me this:
Of course I can crop a smaller portion of the image, and then on export resize down to 1920x1080.
But what about cropping to exactly 1920x1080 at a true 1:1 pixel crop (without resizing down)?
So to crop this image...
... and end up with this....
... I would need to "guess" at the size, release the mouse and check (with informaion overlay turned on).  Then do it again.  And again.  And again.....until I got it exactly at 1920x1080.  That's a royal pain in the rear.
In Photoshop I can use the Marquee tool and define exactly 1920px x 1080px and then go to Image > Crop:
But in LR there is NO way to define actual pixels.  Seems like it would be fairly easy to do, since you can already enter in a custom aspect ratio.  Just add something like a little checkbox in the custom aspect ratio box.  Something like this:
Or make it a set of radio buttons with the ability to choose between aspect ratio and actual pixels.  (And rename the setting to "Custom Dimmensions" instead of "Custom Aspect Ratio".
JimHess raised an interesting issue (emphasis added):
In Lightroom, photo dimensions is part of the export function, not the editing.  You cannot specify a size in the develop module.  You are going to have to modify your workflow.  Crop to the 2:3 aspect ratio, and then export with the long side set to 2400 pixels.  That's the way it works.  Otherwise, you would have to have a separate image for every purpose.  The whole idea (for me, at least) is to have one master image that I can use for any purpose.  Then I use the export function to customize the copy for whatever purpose I need.
Is this true?  Doesn't seem to make any sense to me. Here is some sample crop metadata that LR saves:
   crs:CropTop="0.232327"
   crs:CropLeft="0.587547"
   crs:CropBottom="0.541667"
   crs:CropRight="1"
   crs:CropAngle="0"
   crs:CropConstrainToWarp="0"
So LR is saving information about 3 corners (don't really need the 4th).  That's it.  So it should absolutely be doable to define a specific number of pixels to crop to instead of an aspect ratio.  The software will still write the same resulting metadata - the location of each of the three corners.
So then, why not just do what other people suggest?  Why crop to whatever portion of the image I want and then resize to 1920x1080 on export?
Well, as Jim said, the whole idea behind LR is to have a single master image that I can use in a whole bunch of ways.  So I can make virtual copies to do other kinds of crops.  But exporting?  That actually means I'm creating "a separate image" for the purpose of doing a timelapse.
See, as it stands right now, I can make all my changes in LR, and then import the RAW files into After Effects, and AE will read the metadata from the file and apply it.  So if I get my crop right in LR (set exactly to 1920x1080) then I can simply import the RAW files and AE will see the footage at the right size.  No need to render before importing, and no scaling needed, which improves the render time.  I don't need to create a whole new set of exported images that eat up storage space.  And I can easily go back in and make an adjustment to my crop in LR, then switch over to AE and reload the sequence.  It'll instantly update, with no need to re-export from LR.
See, THAT's the power of LR.  Exporting is great when you're at the END of your workflow, and for me, LR is just the first step in a long post production workflow.
Edit:  Of course sometimes I don't need 1:1 pixel crops; sometimes I'll want to resize.  In these cases I'll set my crop using a set aspect ratio and then deal with the resizing in After Effects, avoiding the need to render twice (because I still don't need to export from LR to use the RAW files in AE).

  • Print To Specific Dimensions?

Is there a way in iPhoto '09 of printing to specific dimensions?
Suppose you had an IKEA picture frame, and you wanted to print a 12cm x 12cm square crop of one of your photos, to fill it. Can you do that with iPhoto? If so, how?

in iPhoto edit the photo and crop to a square - since cropping is just a ratio, not a dimension and square would work - select the cropped photo and click print - select the printer and paper size and set a custom print size - 12cm x 12cm in your case - and print

  • MDX: Selecting specific dimension member and its descendants from parent child dimension where dimension member names can be same in dimension hierarchy

I'm creating a SSRS report using SSAS cube as a source.
When creating a dataset for the report, I'm having trouble with MDX to select a specific dimension member and its descendants from parent child dimension where dimension member names can be same in dimension hierarchy.
Lets say for example that I have an account dimension where,
    In level 02 I have company ID:s 101, 102, 103 and so on...
In level 03 I have Balance sheet
In level 04 I have some account groups, Assets, Liabilities and so on... and In level 05 I have individual accounts
How can I select for example company 102:s Assets from level 04 and its descendants?
Normally in adventure works I would do this if I've wanted Current Assets and its descendants:
SELECT NON EMPTY { [Measures].[Amount] } ON COLUMNS, NON EMPTY
    { (DESCENDANTS([Account].[Accounts].[Account Level 03].[Current Assets]) ) } ON ROWS
    FROM [Adventure Works]
But in my Account dimension at level 04 I have Assets member as many times as I have companies in level 02.

  • Trouble resizing layers to specific dimensions

Hello. I am using PSE 5 and I am trying to make an 11 x 8.5 brochure for my business, which will have a mixture of text and pictures. What I want to do is place four pictures in the brochure but the pictures, when dragged in, cover the whole brochure. I want to be able to resize each picture (layer) to 3 wide while constraining the height to 2.25.
Currently I can resize each layer by dragging one of the rectangular markers located around the active layer, but the scale is not preserved. I have looked in my PSE 5 help file, Adobes online help and Google to no avail. One site said hold the Shift key when resizing a layer to constrain its proportions, but this did not work for me.
When modifying a picture in a Microsoft Word document, the size can easily be modified by right clicking on the image and selecting «Format Picture» followed by clicking on the «Size» tab. Is there a similar feature is PSE 5?
    Thank you

    Dennis,
This program does not work the way MS Word does, and it may be easier to make a brochure with Word or a print shop program. However, one can make an artful collage in Elements.
    1. It is desirable to have the resolution of the canvas and of the individual pictures the same. One can check the resolution in Image>resize>image size for each picture file, then resize as necessary
    2. File>new>blank file will allow one to open a blank file in accordance with the dimensions (11x8.5")which you require. The resolution can be specified in this dialog as well. For printing, it is desirable to have a resolution of 240-300px/in. Create such a blank file.
    3. This blank file will be the background layer, as seen in the layers palette
    4. Open a picture file. Go to Select>all, then Edit>copy. Make the background layer active (the one from step #2), go to Edit>paste. This will place the picture on its own layer
    5. Access the move tool, and resize the picture utilizing one of the corner handles.
    6. Repeat for each picture.
    7. Text will be on its own layer as well
    8. 3x2.25" dimensions are unique, and I would crop each picture to this specification before step #4 above. With care, you may have minimal distortion.

  • Crop to specific size

Since Leopard / Photoshop CS3 is currently broken, I'm using
Fireworks, but having trouble doing the simplest things.
I need to crop a portion of an image to a specific pixel
dimension. It's easy in Photoshop, but I'm just not getting it
Fireworks. Also, how do you constrain a square when cropping? Shift
drag the crop tool doesn't keep it square like photoshop.
Can't seem to get a firm answer from google, so maybe
    here?

Also if you don't want to crop/clip object bounds in the
process - go Edit > Preferences > Editing Tab and deselect
    'Delete Objects when cropping' option.
Another option is the Export Area Tool (C). Draw your crop
area with it, then double click the crop area and it takes you
    directly to the Export dialog.
This option is nice if you don't want to change your original
    .png source file.

  • Custom cropping using pixel dimension

The banner image module for my website requires images cropped to 940 x 400 pixels. When I use the Custom cropping function in PSE 12 (on a Mac OSX 10.9.2), it only shows a cm dimension. Can I do a custom crop using a pixel dimension?

You should just be able to type 940 px and 400 px in the width and height fields
Another way is to use the Rectangular Marquee Tool and use Aspect>Fixed Size then enter 940 px X 400 px

  • How to crop & print specific sizes in Aperture

I have a project I am working on where I need to make a series of prints that are flush-mounted onto boards that are 2.25"x5". I want to take images from my Aperture library, crop the long and skinny portion from them them, and print them out on my Inkjet printer (single prints on 4x6's on my Canon 6220 for tests, but I am going to want to print multiple-up prints on 5x7 paper once I get going as I need 10-20 copies of each print). I started by cropping (using the Custom feature) and then using a 4x6 preset in the printer dialog with the image size set to 2.25x5. I, of course, have run into the issue that the crop tool does not crop by inches, but rather pixels, and only in certain aspect ratios. I have tried making an export preset, as some suggested, but that only works if the image is the right size to begin with. By chance, some of my prints are exactly the right size, but mostly they are a bit short or wide...
How do I make a template or crop guide so that I can crop-out the portion of my image that I want, keeping it in the correct aspect of 2.25x5, and then print it out at the exact size? And then how will I do this as a multiple print job on a single piece of 5x7 paper? Do I need to figure out how many pixels a 2.25x5 print will be? Can I set a custom aspect somehow? I know in PS there is the ability to set the "canvas Size" and work the image into that, but I don't have PS on this machine. I have Pages to work with as well, but no Illustrator or InDesign apps or skills. Ideas?
    Thanks!

If you select Do not constrain or Custom in the crop tool you can set the crop to any aspect ratio you like. You can either drag the box or enter your dimensions in the tool. Note it won't take decimal points in the dimension boxes so in your case enter 500x225
The crop tool only reports MP because inches would make no sense here. The image could be exported and printed at any size the crop tool only sets the aspect ration of the image.

  • Cropping to fractional dimensions

I'm trying to print 1x1.3 photos but custom cropping won't let me enter fractional dimensions. I read a posted message about entering it as a ratio (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1400995&tstart=224), such as 10x13. My question is, if I do that, how do I get back to inches and not ratios? After all, a 10x13 ratio could result in a 1x1.3 photo or a 2x2.6 photo.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It's all in the size ratio. If you select a ratio that will print your 1 x 1.3 it will also print a 2 x 2.6 but at half the resolution. So when you go to print, you have to set the print size.
In iPhoto you will then have to set the print size in the Custom menu of the Print window.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Exporting from LR5 at specific dimensions

Exporting in LR5 for a photo contest.  Stated requiremnts are "high res JPEG at 300 dpi, no larger than 8x12 inches".  Just not sure what settings to use in LR5/cc to meet these specs.  There is no "dpi".
Am I right in assuming that if I put 300 into ppi, that that will set the resolution and also 'fix' the maximize size of the image so it wont get enlarged beyond what would look good/be printable?  I imagine that the images are 'judged' as JPEGs on a monitor and the selections will then will be printed in a Blurb book in various final printed sizes.
I obviously want no degradation of image quality and dont want all images automatically enlarged to 8x12 inches.  Some of my pics are square crops and dont want them changed to 8x12.  Also one pic is from small area of original image and not sure if it will blow up well to 8x12 so dont want it automatically enlarged to 8x12 inches.  Shooting a D300 in raw if that matters.
New to this and fairly clueless so apologize if I'm asking an obvious question.  Any help appreciated, but looking for recomendations of the exact LR5 export settings that I should enter.  Thanks.

I  interpret the photo contest requirements as meaning, "We will be making "review prints" of all submitted pictures at a size no larger than 8"x12" and ask that you submit your images at 300dpi.
I suggest submitting your pictures using the maximum print size, which can be done using these LR Export module settings:
    1) File Settings: JPEG, sRGB, Quality = 90 or higher
    2) Image Sizing: Short Edge = 8.0", Resolution = 300 ppi
Standard 2:3 aspect ratio images will print at 8"x12" and Square 1:1 aspect ratio images will print at 8"x8".
If you have any images with an aspect ratio larger than the standard 2:3 ratio you will need to use Long Edge = 12", Resolution = 300 ppi to create these JPEGs. This is the required to meet 8"x12" maximum print size @ 300 dpi constraint. For example if you have a panoramic image with 1:2 ratio it must print at 6"x12" size to stay within the 8"x12" print size constraint. When reviewing images the judges don't want to be influenced by the print size, so this constraint helps to keep all of the "review prints" as close as possible in size (regardless of their aspect ratio).
    3) Output Sharpening: Screen Standard, Low, or High as required to achieve the desired sharpening of the Exported image as it appears in LR at 1:1 Zoom view.
(Technically a print will need added sharpening, but this will make the screen image appear over-sharpened.)
"Is there a way in LR5 to see my image's pixel dimensions?  In photoshop it seems I can find that under Image.  Cant seem to find that info in LR5 tho."
You can only see the image files pixel dimensions from inside the Library and Develop modules, but not in the Export module. Unlike PS you can't see the image file's 'Resolution' in any of LR's modules. Camera image files technically have no 'Resolution' that is of any practical use. For example a full-frame Canon 5D MKII camera has a sensor 'Resolution' of 5616x3744, which translate to a 'Resolution' value of 5616÷36mm = 156ppmm x 25.4 = 3962.4 ppi. However, it would be useful to have the the ability to read and use the image file 'Resolution inside LR for specicifc purposes such as this photo contest. Here's what I have suggested:

  • Crop - Front image dimensions

    Hi,
I have a little problem with the cropping tool in the new CS6 version.
In CS5 I had the oppotunity to choose "Front image" and the crop tool would copy the dimensions from the chosen image.
Now I made a mistake and cropped a picture with the wrong dimensions. Ususally I choose "original ratio", but this time I forgot. Then normally in CS5 I just choose one of the other pictures in my workspace (with the original dimensions) and hit the "front image" button, and then I got back the the picture I cropped in the wrong dimenions, and now I could easily crop it with the right dimensions.
I found another discussion in the forum that answered exactly this question, and it said "Try pressing 'R' in crop mode. It will open Crop Image Size & Resolution window, where you can choose Source: Custom, Front Image, etc."
But when I press "R" in the crop mode nothing like that comes up. Instead the oppotunity to rotate comes up... :-( Not what I was looking for...
    What to do?
    I work on a PC
    Best regards
    Hanne

No, that was apperently the issue, thanks.
But it was actually a little easier in CS5. Because now I have to chose a picture in the workspace with the wanted dimesion, drag an area, save a preset and then I ca go to the other image I wanted to crop, choose the preset an then crop. In CS5 there was a direct button, and I could switch between higth and length, so that the hight dimensions became the length dimensions and so on, a good little feature when working with images in both horizontal and vertical versions.
But well, I gues I'll have to live with that.
    Thank u.
    Best regards Hanne

  • I need to create three different sized posters - how do I do this?  I'm looking for a place to enter specs or know that my design can accommodate specific dimensions.

I'm not Photoshop saavy, but I can work well in Pages.  I just need to know how to resize for different size printed materials.  For example, how do I change the size of one design to accommodate three printed pieces - 8.5" x 11", a 11" x 17", and then the same image in 24"x36"?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Commercial Printing requires images to be 300 dpi (pixels per inch).
You will have to do the maths as we don't know how big the images are, whether they fill each size or only part of them.
If they bleed (go off the edge of the paper) they will need an extra 3/8" (.375") on each edge.
So for an image to fill the largest size and bleed you need an image 7425 x 11025 pixels. I hope you have a good camera. You can aways reduce the dimensions down from that.

  • Output Images at specific dimensions?

Simple procedure I think... trying to output an image at so many --- px wide by --- px high. In the export presets I chose 'fit within (pixels)' from the drop down - BUT - problem is it won't crop the image - it will constrain the proportions to one or the other, but not both.
In this case the height is correct on all the image but the width varies. I simply need all the images output to an exact height & width - regardless of how they're cropped.
I know a Photoshop script can do this - can Aperture??

Found a workaround ... of sorts. Using Photoshop.
I simply create three separate idential folders, each containing it's own copy of the original hires files. Rename them first while the EXIF data is still there. Then I go ahead & use Photoshop to convert each folder full of images to the correct size.
Not perfect, as the original image creation date is lost, but at least the filenames are as they should be and the creation date/time can be referenced that way.
One other thing that I'm surprised isn't in Aperture...
The ability to specify a particular file size for output (under 3MB for example). As it stands now the only way I can figure to do this is sort the folder of original images by size, and make a calculation based on the largest file size what percentage I need to reduce the images, then export versions.
Would be a heck of a lot easier if one could simply choose to export versions that are 3MB or under...
Or perhaps this can be done & I'm missing something...?

  • Cropping to exact dimensions

    Hello All,
I need to crop some of my pictures to 120px x 120px, but haven't managed to do this, and would like to know where I'm going worng.
Can I work in pixels in iPhoto, if not do you know what unit of measurement do i have to use?
If I can use pixels, in the custom constrain boxes do I just simply type 120 into each box, or do I need to put "px" after the digits?
    Regards
    JF

Two steps. First, crop to square without worrying about the pixels. Then, export and configure to a maximum pixel X pixel count. The exported file will be exactly what you want without having to remove pixels from the stored file in the iPhoto library.

  • Any way to set the Application frame to specific dimensions?

In order to make screencasts more easily, I'd like to make a small AppleScript or Javascript script that would resize the application frame to exactly 1280 X 720
I tried a few things in both AppleScript and Javascript but I can't find any reference in the docs on how to point to the Application frame and set its dimensions...
Any pointer in the right direction much appreciated!

Yes, we do use Apple Remote Desktop. However, we want the other computer to be black the entire time, whether we are accessing it or not. I just don't want the students to see the mouse flying all over the screen and getting distracted, so I just need the screen itself to be black all the time, while still being on.
