Crop tool Classice Mode
I find the new crop tool too time consuming, and it is not very user friendly. I like that you can turn on the classice mode, but each time I select the crop tool the classic mode has been turned off. Would you please make it possible to turn on classic mode and leave it on.
In my opinion the crop tool worked great, just because you can change something does not always mean that it is an improvement. I perfer to move the crop tool around on the image, not the image behind the crop tool.
Thank you for giving us the classic mode, please never take that away.
I hear you. The setting should be sticking for you, so that's a problem - though it may be a problem on your own system. I see all the settings stay set. Try this:
With no document open, choose the Crop tool.
Click the gear and make the settings you want.
Choose Window - Workspace - New Workspace, and name it something you like (I call mine Noels).
Now Quit Photoshop
Do you see your settings stick now, next time you open Photoshop?
By the way, try the new Crop Tool (without Classic Mode) but with one setting change: Turn off the [ ] Auto Center Preview setting. The always present outer border takes a little getting used to, but the thing will operate in a very expected manner otherwise.

Crop tool shows background color unless I switch to "Classic" mode
I'm not sold on the "latest" Photoshop being the best. I've seen more bugs now that I've subscribed to the "CC" version than ever before. Here's my latest issue..
When I activate the crop tool (I realize it's been rewritten.. not sure why), I see my current background color in place of what is visible in my current workspace. Ultimately, completing the crop command, it crops as expected, and the background color vanishes. What benefit is this? It adds confusion and makes me a bit confused as to what the final crop result will be. Why was this changed? Why am I seeing my current background color? It makes no sense. I've been using Photoshop for nearly 20 years and this is just dumb. Can anyone explain?
Thanks!
- SeanYeah, that was pretty vague. I was in a creative mode and was rudely interrupted by this weird change, so I wasn't focused on a clear post. The lack of direct email support to Adobe frustrated me also. Alas..
Bascially, I have a layer with some image data, and transparent regions:
I select the crop tool, and select a region just inside the outside edge, containing the portion of the image I care about:
The background switched from being transparent to my current background color selection. I had this green chosen for some completely unrelated task. I can't find anywhere that this can be disabled. The settings I have are what I believe to be the defaults:
And, when I change the crop settings to "Use Classic Mode", the behavior is the more sensible (in my opinion) current background:
I hope that clears up the confusion. I can't imagine any use case where replacing the current visible background with the current background color makes sense. If it's a feature, I can't find any documentation, official or otherwise, that explains why this is happening.
Yes, I like the latest versions of software, but since I made the jump from CS4 to CC, I've hit more bugs than ever before. I've had to kill Photoshop a couple times in the past two months, whereas before, it never froze up or crashed on me. This feels like a bug, but if it's a feature, I'd love to know how to use the new crop tool's background settings properly.
Cheers!

Crop tool won't drag with CC Photoshop 2014
I have searched everywhere and talked with Adobe support through chat (they ended that abruptly??!), and Twitter and still have not had any resolution to this. I hope someone can help.
I'm trying to do a simple crop. I've done it a million times with no problems BEFORE CC 2014.
I select the crop tool and try to drag but it always stops immediately and selects the entire image as the Crop Preview.
I've tried:
using "Classic Mode"
different Ratios/Resolutions
uninstalling/re-installing
installing the latest update - but that always fails. - I'll even completely uninstall, then when it goes to re-install it will install the one file (after a million attempts at failing to download it) and then fail on an update that it tries to install. I've tried at least 20 times. AT LEAST!!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Could it be my NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS? (I know that's not the reason for the failed downloads from Adobe servers - that's all on them.)

Installed TWAIN devices: NONEI have spent a week trying to get this to work and now it just started working for all images. I have NO idea why.
Here's what I did:
1. uninstalled NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS drivers and reinstalled them
2. uninstalled CC Photoshop 2014 (2x)
3. clean install of CC Photoshop 2014 (2x)
4. installed update (took dozens of tries before this actually downloaded and installed successfully unfortunately)
5. clicked on the crop tool and tried to drag... nothing happened
6. waited, waited and waited.. went about my other work and forgot about it and then after about 5 minutes the crop box appeared. I was able to adjust it too.
No idea but I'm happy now. -
Photoshop CC classic mode is different to CS6
I am currently using a trial of CC. I want to upgrade but the main issue putting me off is the crop tool, I have to crop a lot of images and this new method makes it more difficult.
I have always used classic mode. By default in CS6 the crop bounding box is already placed on the image. However on CC the default classic mode the crop bounding box isnt placed on the image, I have to drag it each time.
Is there a way to have the box on the image by default?
The only way I can see is to turn off classic mode but then theres the issue of having to use the annoying method of moving the canvas rather than the crop box and I dont want to use that
CC classic crop
CS6 classic cropCan anyone from Adobe help? I would love to try the Photoshop CC, but have had this problem each time I installed it, so I just use the Photoshop CS6. I understand there are different features in CC and would love to try them. Please help me solve this frustrating problem! Thanks.

All-New Crop Tool in Photoshop CS6 | Visual Design CS6 | Adobe TV
Crop images faster and with greater precision using the all-new, nondestructive Crop tool. Rapidly manipulate your images on canvas and see your adjustments happen live thanks to the Mercury Graphics Engine.
http://adobe.ly/I7ORrmAdobe, your new and "improved" Crop tool is trash! It is unintuitive, slow and hinders production speed. Your Classical mode is NOT classical mode! What were you thinking? That by slowing down one of the most core functionalities of Photoshop you're somehow improving it? Your new Crop tool sucks! AT LEAST make the Classic tool REAL classic tool! Ideally, roll back the old Crop, it worked PERFECTLY and needed no improvement!

CS6 PS Cropping Tool has many problems for working professionals...
Ok, I understand that the kids at Adobe would like to change things around in "upgrade versions" of Photoshop. However for working photographers and professionals that crop A LOT of images in the course of their work, the new cropping tool is a DISASTER! A few may like the new tool... however, there are many that don't. http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/photoshop_6_crop_tool?utm_content=re ply_link&utm_medium=email&utm_source=reply_notification#reply_10280572
To the point, here's how to fix the problem. Adobe, you have the CS5 PS cropping tool code... please put that code EXACTLY as it is in CS5 into the "Classic" option for CS6 PS. This way, those who WORK with Photoshop and PAY to use the software can get their work done using the excellent crop tool as was in CS5 (which I have downgraded to so I can get work done) and those who are giddy about the new crop tool can play to their hearts content.
Adobe, you are upsetting a lot of paying clients with your new crop tool and the "faux" classic tool option. You might want to address this issue soon!Ken, I have to say that I too chose to go back to CS5. I feel like I got nailed with being an "early adopter", you know the guys that get to do the bug testing for a company because they didn't know how to do it or were too cheap.
That is something that Noel (How you doing Noel? You probably don't remember me from back in the Macromedia user group days, but thought I'd say hi anyhow) either doesn't understand or isn't acknowledging so far.
I am judging by his like 19k+ posts that he's either a rep on behalf of Photoshop or an avid user. I appreciate what he is trying to do, but on the other hand, just admit the tool is a pain. It isn't intuitive. It does take WAY too long to figure out to use.
I have NEVER had this much problem with any tool in Photoshop. This tool represents the biggest pain I have EVER experienced with a Photoshop tool and I've used it since '93. I adore Photoshop. I am a power user. Those words aren't the words of a flippant newbie.
I know if I use it for 8 hours a day like you Noel, that I will get used to it, but that isn't the point.
The point is that I feel like I was hit with a poorly thought out tool, with a poorly implemented "Classic" mode that feels buggy, to say the least. It's usability doesn't "flow" because for example what genius thought of hitting the P key to go into Classic mode, when that conflicts with the Pen/Paths tool? Really? My deeper concern is that Photoshop is slipping on it's usability standards like Apple is on it's iPhones. In the words of usability guru, Steve Krug "Don't make me think."
What I chose to do is this:
1)Grudgingly use CS6 for the things it does really really well. Can I just say I love the new Raw interface, and love "Clarity" for example? Great job guys. I watched a tutorial and got it almost instantly.
2)Continue to use CS5 for cropping lot's of images, something I also do a lot of. Cross my fingers that whoever dropped the ball on this gets their act together and makes this tool truly usable and intuitive. At the very least they will make the Classic mode work properly. For example, why do I keep popping out of Classic mode? Why doesn't the preference stick consistently? There shouldn't be a learning curve this steep on a crop tool. I'm really surprised this didn't come up in usability testing.
I hate being the first adopter, because they get to work out all the kinks for the people who failed to do their job in the first place. That's what feels like happened here. If users don't complain and give feedback, Adobe will never fix the problem, right?
Now before somebody freaks out and calls this a flame, it isn't. No emotion is to be read into this that isn't expressly stated. I'm not being sarcastic, sardonic or unfriendly. Whatever tone is being read into this is a projection of your own mind. -
How do I get back to original crop tool?
I once cropped a photo in CS5.1 using a crop-tool preset. Now I can't get back to the original crop tool. No matter what I do, I can't get back to an unrestricted crop area with draggable "handles" in the corners and on the horizontal and vertical borders. Help!
With the Crop tool selected, click on the Cog icon in the Options bar, and check 'Use classic mode'.

Crop Tool Changes its orientation
I have a crop tool preset I made in landscape orientation to size photos all the same for a data-merged book I do every year. With CS6 I noticed a new and annoying behavior; if I move the crop tool too far to the left, it automatically changes the crop area to portrait. If this is supposed to be a feature, it's a most unwelome one. If my crop preset is landscape, then that's what I want. I'd like to know if there is a way to disable this "feature".
Have you tried changing the Crop tool setting to use classic mode. I don't know if that will do the trick. CS6 Crop tool has been reworked. Many do not like the rework?

PS CS6 issue with crop tool: graphic glitches
I am using Photoshop CS6 v13.1.2 and I'm experiencing an issue with the crop tool. Whenever I use the crop tool, move the frame around and then zoom in on the image, the image becomes noisy, pixelated or has other 'graphic glitches'. I changed the PS preferences to not use the GPU and then rebooted the computer. Still the same issue without the GPU.
Running on Mac OS 10.8.3, iMac 2011 with AMD Radeon HD 6970M.
Is there another workaround to use this tool until it might get fixed? Thank you.I've seen the same issue from time to time on windows 13.01.1 usually only on rather large pixel dimension documents.
Does it make a difference if you flatten the image before using the crop tool?
Also, using the classic mode for the crop tool doesn't seem to have that glitch. -
Tips! How to bypass new crop tool CS6, photoshop
Do you dislike the new crop function in Photoshop CS6?
I found out a way to handle and bypass the function so it works like in earlier versions.
1. First step is to change to classic mode (this is done in settings above the image a little "gear")
2. The second step is to change ratio to unconstrained.
The third step is the tip!
I was very frustrated that I could not start outside the picture to begin my cropping.
You know when you want to crop a landscape image of a portrait image and want to go from side to side.
The problem was that I started to rotate a crop frame that was there by default... REALLY CRAPPY FEATURE!
3. So here is the tip
Place your cursor is outside the picture
Before you begin dragging, hold down shift.
Begin the dragging, then let go of shift, and "tada" the crop frame behaves as it should.
I hope you found this info useful
Best Regards // DanielI don't see why your method is better than just using the new perspective crop tool (it allows you to start outside the image, use a specific size, and rotate the crop (by dragging from near/outside of a corner).
In a lot of cases want to go from left to right edge of the image.
From Original ratio:
To do it the "new" way means two step
Move down the upper edge, move up the lower edge.
From unconstraind:
To do it the "new" way means two step
Almost drag the area I want, move the edges out to left and right.
With my method I can easily drag the area I want in one movement.
at least a couple of problems with that: You still can't distort the crop lines (grab a corner and move it independent of the other corners) to fix perspective and such; and you aren't cropping to a particular size (which means you have to do it as a separate step after cropping).
I am sorry I could not find a way to do that easy...
And I agree to the common opinion, why limit something that works well, without having the option via settings to get it back. -
Crop tool missing perspective control
The new crop tool handling will take a bit of getting used to but one can always put it into "classic mode" so it handles in a similar way to CS5.
The one thing that is now missing though is the perspective button that i found was a very useful feature of the crop tool, i hope that this can be added back to CS6 as to me this is a step backwards.
Have i missed something and this facility is still there but hiding somewhere?Hold down the crop tool in the tool bar - you'll find the perspective crop as a sub tool

Can I reduce motion when using CS6 crop tool?
I find the new crop tool almost unusable: nauseating mix of movement of the crop box and the background image. It's quite literally nauseating for one prone to motion sickness. I much prefer the previous versions' way, where the image is fixed and the crop box alone moves, and arrow keys nudge the crop box and not the image. Can I revert it somehow, click a 'reduce motion' someplace in prreferences, or force the image to stay still while only crop outline moves?
Go to settings (The cog wheel icon, right of view drop down), click "Use Classic Mode"

Why is the crop tool in Lightroom 5 so sluggish on my otherwise very fast machine?
I'm running a Macbook Pro Retina, new from this time last year. It's got 16gb RAM, a 768gb SSD (with about 150gb free space), and 2.8GHz processor. Everything else is lightening fast on my system. Lightroom is fine otherwise, but the crop tool is almost unusably slow. When I tap "R", it sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to load into crop mode, and another 5-10 seconds to load out of it.
Additionally, it will show the incorrect preview in crop for the first few seconds, so if I go back to re-crop something, it will act as if I am adjusting the cropped version rather than the original, so if I exit too quickly, it comes back wrong.
I've tried what other users recommended - using both full screen and not, updated to the latest version, restarted multiple times with no solution. Please help!I was amazed at the amount of info you put into that post. Thanks for that effort.
I made sure Onyx was up-to-date and ran all the schemes you listed. That did nothing. However, reading further in your support thread gave me some ideas. I started looking into third party extensions and plugins. I recalled installing Silverlight a few days ago, for what reason I have no idea, since I trust Microsoft only marginally more than I trust Google. Which is to say, I don't trust either of them at all. So I threw that plugin into the trash.
I should have checked the performance right there, but I didn't. Right under Silverlight, you mentioned Flash. I decided to check the prefs on it, and found that it was set to allow sites to save info to my computer, and Camera/Mic and Playback were changed from "Block" to "Ask Me". I distinctly remember setting those for maximum privacy. I reset them, cleared all the files, and exited the prefs.
I just checked them again, and everything is changed back to allow Flash to have its way. Looks like I'll be uninstalling that now...
I also installed Acrobat recently, just to have an alternative to Preview. Sea Monkey opened an alert box just now, telling me to watch out for the Acrobat plugins, as they've been known to cause problems. Gotta love Adobe.
Back to the topic at hand, I think it was the Silverlight plugin that caused the slowdown. All my browsers are running at full speed now after I threw that plugin out. (Now if I could just get Safari to allow me to back up a page without re-rendering it every time...)
Thanks very much for the help. -

Just some thoughts...have you explored all the options under the Tools Options Tab and have you hit Reset Tools?

Can't get Crop Tool to stay in Custom LR4
I can't get the crop tool to crop in Custom mode. I unlock the lock and set to Custom and relock the lock. As soon as I begin the crop it reverts to Original. I've restarted. Any suggestions? Thanks!!
Sound's right - you didn't change the aspect ratio before you locked it so it's still at the original aspect ratio. Just unlock it and start dragging.

Deleting Rather Than Zero'ing Out Cells In Planning
Hello All, Forms issue in Planning 11.1.2... I'd have thought this would be a common question, but can't find it addressed anywhere.. If you delete a number from a form rather than setting it to zero, the value remains in ESSBASE and stays in totals.
