Crystal off a Universe

I create 2 seperate queries from a Universe and join them in Crystal. Yet Crystal is returning 2 seperate select statements. Causing really bad performance. Anyone have any idea on what to do? Same thing happens in XI R2 and 2008

Can you use union when developing the universe query. I use a union on a couple reports from our datamart in the business objects window within the database expert.

How to create a dynamic parameter off a universe field

Hello,
I am trying to create a dynamic parameter in Crystal Reports off my universe field. However the fields appear to all come in as STRING with length 65534 (memo field?). Therefore the fields are not available to choose in my parameter creation box. NOTE: In the universe designer, the field is set as CHARACTER type. I am just trying to make it work with the sample universes that are shipped with BobJ.
Is there a way in the Universe Designer to make the fields come into Crystal Reports as string fields so that I can choose them as the value for the dynamic parameter in Crystal Reports?

I'll try again,
My problem is that I want a dynamic paramater for my Master flow (on START1 activity, so it is something like that : start1.param = select seq.nextval form dual; or from a function GET_PROCESS_ID) but it seems that I must give a permanent parameter it can not be set dynamicaly. I want my flow to be independant of any human intervention. So if it is the first load it does one thing if not the first load it does something else. I can not understand the point of having a parameter (in) that can not be set dynamicaly (looks more like a constant to me, or I'm missing something here). Hope your getting my point.

Can CR 2008(build off Multilingual Universe) change locale as WebI does?

Description of Problem:
    An OEM Customer wants to know if Crystal Report 2008, which is built off Multilingual Universe, could change locale on User-Locale switch(for example, switch Infoview/IE locale).
    In BOE XI R3, Universe can maintain multilingual info, so that the front-end WebI can change locale automatically. This feature works fine for WebIs, however it doesn't seemt to work for CR 2008 when the report is built off a multilingual Universe.
    Is there any idea how to utilize the Universe feature in CR2008?

Cascading Prompts in Crystal from a Universe

Hi There,
How can I create a cascading prompt on the Universe to be used in crystal?
I have created a Cascading prompt in the Universe and it work in Webi but for some reason you do not see the cascading LOV

The same report is working fine on windows server 2008 R2 and IE 8.0.7601 . Can you pleasde guide through which pack should i install on BO server to overcome this issue . As all my users are using IE 9 version only .

Crystal Report on Universe with MySQL ODBC

Hi
I created a report with Crystal reports by using a Universe based on MySQL ODBC. In my local (Windows XP) installed Report Designer everything is running fine. I'm also able to publish this report to my BOE, based on RHEL.
If I will refresh my report on InfoView, database credential are required, but my credential are not accepted. I only become a error message: Failed to open the connection
If I use Webi with the same universe and the same connection, everything is fine.
I have also change the ODBC version, but no other result.
Any idea, where I can trace this connection?
Versions:
Crystal Reports 2008 (12.0.0.683)
Business Objects Enterprise 3.0 (12.0.0.683)
MySQL ODBC 3.51.27 and 5.1.5

thank you very much for reply.
I think you got it. We have the goal to create a report that can be printed and is top-gloss-report for management ; ) One query would not be able to include all that stuff. It is very different.
So we created 7 different queries in SAP BW Query Designer and we want to put them together in BO Crystal Reports.
All Queries work with input variable for period and year. These input variables are used in the columns of the queries for calculating the key figures.
So, if we put these queries together into Crystal Reports, we should actually use "replacement path" for variables. But the sap.help says, that isn't doable.

Crystal Report with Universe instead of Business Views: Any limitations ?

We were using Crystal Reports on top of Business Views until now. Due to considerable post-migration work with Crystal Reports on top of Business Views we are thinking of switching to Crystal Reports on top of Universe.
Can anybody explain me whether there is any drawback while using *Universe with Crystal Reports* instead of Business Views with Crystal Reports.
Please consider the following pointswhile giving an evaluation -
Dynamic parameter
(ii) LOV creation and maintainence
(iii) Maintaining order of parameters
(iv) Updating Universe/Business View level changes in Report (Verify database)
(v) Report performance

Here are my views..
Yes, you can create crystal reports on top of universes. But there is one major drawback using universe. You can connect to only one database at a time. But in Business View you can connect to multiple databases. If you are ok with this, you can absolutely go for universes.
Dynamic parameter --- Yes its possible
(ii) LOV creation and maintainence --- Whatever the LOVs you have in universe, you can use the same. And also you can use LOVs created in Business Views while creating reports on top of universes. Any how please check. not very sure about it.
(iii) Maintaining order of parameters --- Yes, the order of parameters can be managerd using universe designer itself.
(iv) Updating Universe/Business View level changes in Report (Verify database) -- No need of updates required to be done in report. There are few changes which can happen for universe. Seemlessly you don't need to do anything to reports. Unless you delete some objects in universe.
(v) Report performance -- Never checked in this perspective. Performance should be fine.

Crystal Reports and Universe Connection (Access DB)

I am trying to use a universe as a data source for Crystal Reports 2008. The universe is defined on a simple relational Access DB table (.mdb file which resides on the server). After selecting the universe as data source, I can select measures and attributes from it, but after clicking "ok" I am getting the error "Fehler bei Anmeldung." ("Logon failed.").
Please note that although I am connecting to a relational (not OLAP!) DB, SAP-Note
" 1363326 - Error: Logon failed on Crystal Report conecting to OLAP Universe."
describes exactly the error I am facing (except that this note is for OLAP universes).
The universe works fine if I use it in WebI as data soruce.
Which universes can Crystal Reports 2008 actually use in general?
Are there any special restrictions for the data model?

Make sure that the Access DB is accessible also from the local workstation the CR Designer is installed on.
In fact I would recommend to setup your universe connection to you the generic ODBC driver and setup a system DSN for accessing the DB once on your BO server and once on your client. Make sure to use the same DSN name in both cases.

Crystal off Query Builder

can you create a crystal report off this query builder statment?

Unfortunately, you can not. In fact you will not find these tables for example CI_INFOOBJECTS in the CMS database.
The reason being BusinessObjects employs a persistence framework to serialize the object model to the CMS repository (which is a database). A persistence framework is a structure that persists the object model to an underlying data source.In BusinessObjects Enterprise, the persistence framework does not encapsulate class retrieval. Therefore, you write your own persistence code to retrieve classes from the CMS repository.

Crystal XI with universe data sources - persistent behavior

We have been working with Crystal XI reports against universes and are faced with challenges of fully understanding how the universe/report information is kept synchronized after a report is published in BOE repository.
For example, I have a Crystal XI report that is built against a universe and has prompts against universe objects (not necessarily pre-defined universe conditions) which have associated LOVs. These universe based prompts are automatically created as static prompts in Crystal. When I run this report and run an SQL trace on the database, here are my observations:
-Report will not submit the underlying LOV SQL query to the database and use the static prompt values stored in the report at design time.
-If the underlying LOV SQL now returns values that are different than the ones stored in the report, these do not automattically get reflected in the report.
-If a universe change is made and then exported back to the BOE repository, from that point on, all refreshes of the report re-execute the LOV queries and thus get the updated prompt values which are then reflected on the report. There is a slight twist to this, the LOV queries get submitted twice, once when a report is refreshed before the prompts page is displayed and once when OK button is clicked on the prompts page along with the main report queries.
-It seems like BOE architecture compares the timestamp of the underlying universe against the time when the report was last modified and if the report was modified after the universe, the LOV queries are not executed and static prompt values saved within the report are used.
Can someone please confirm/explain Crystal persistent behavior with respect to universe objects, specially for LOV based prompts or point to technical resources that explain in detail the workings of Crystal XI reports against universe objects?

The description which you have posted for your issue is bit confusing.
Can you please a break into the issue.
As the LOV's are created in Universe and we will get the refreshed data into your report.
We cannot create any static parameters at the report level while using universe as DataSource .

once logged in it doesnt do it in either account
I checked the Universal Access section and it is all turned off
So where do you turn it on and off for he login screen ?

Crystal based on Universe + RAS SDK: How to get Universe for Table

Hi,
Is it possible to retrieve the Universes used in Tables for the EXISTING CrystalReport? I can access SI_UNIVERSE_INFO in enterprise to get the list of universes, BUT i need to know EXACTLY which Universe belongs to which Table. Getting just the list of them does not help, because there can be 10 Tables and only 2 Universes in the list.
I've checked ConnectionInfo property and it does not seem to store any Universe ID's or CUID's. ReportClientDocument.Database seems to be the only place in RAS object model, where such info can be potentially stored, but i could not find it so far.
Does anyone have any idea?

It sounds like you need to use the Universe SDK to do what you are wanting to do. You should post this question to the "Business Objects Enterprise XI R2" forum and hopefully someone will be able to help you out. I'm no help with this one!
I believe the Universe SDK only comes in a COM flavour so if the SDK can do what you need it to do, you'll need to use COM from your .NET application.

As a starter, formulas in CR are fairly simple

The hard one to find in documentation is null or not null values:
if IsNull({field}) then ...
if not(IsNull({field})) then ...
Numbers and dates work with the above null tests, but some databases may need a test for text fields like
if {text field} = "" then ...
I use both for a SQL database as sometimes one works and some times the other:
if IsNull({text field}) or {text field} = "" then ...
You can have multiple tests in a formula

Crystal Reports 2011 and connection to Universe or repository

i have CRW2011 Beta and Interactive Analysis and want to connect to a created universe (which i created with the univrese designer from Interactive analysis).
I don't have any SAP Business Objects server etc...
How can i connect to my created univers. If i try to do, CRW2011 he asks me for a server.
As i remember a SAP technologist do a statement, that this is possible in CRW2011 but was not possible in earlier versions.
Or what is the minimum installation base a need on a local machine?
I need this solution, that i must not declare Business logic for every report again. And this solution should be for
small-size customers.
Customer side environments
- Crystal Reports Server 2008 (if available 2011)
- Crystal Reports Designer / Viewer
- Pervasive SQL DBMS

Hi Andreas,
Universes can only be connected to by logging onto a BOE Server. It's always been this way and I don't recall anyone saying that has changed. BOE 4.0 is using a new Universe file name and format so any older Universes will be upgraded.
As for off line Universe support that won't be supported in the current release and I don't recall anyone telling me it will ever be.

Crystal Reports-Universe and Business Views. Pros & cons. BVs to Universe

Hi Gurus,
We have around 500 + Crystal Reports developed on top of Business Views, Stored Procedures, Command Objects and some directly connected to the tables. No Universes are there in our current environment and all reports undergo frequent changes.
We are planning to replace Business Views with Universe and use them as data provider for existing Crystal Reports and also planning to do some ad-hoc reporting using Web-Intelligence. I have expertise in developing both Crystal Reports and Web Intelligence reports. But I never designed any complex Crystal Reports against Universe / Business Views. I heard that there are several issues with Crystal against Universe (e.g.: Cascading Prompts, LOVs, Row Level Security etc...) Most of our Crystal Reports have several sub-reports and some dynamic cascading parameters.
We currently have not finalized any tool. Some are advising not to disturb the current environment and some say migrating to Universe is a good option because Business View manager tool is going to be trashed in few years. My personal view is to used both Crystal and Web-I and replace Business Views with Universe because we can use it for both Crystal and Web-I.
Can you please post your views on this?
Also, please post the issues (& solutions) you got with Crystal Reports against Universe. Also advantages and disadvantages of using Universe over Business Views.
Environment: Business Objects XI R2 and Crystal Reports XI R2

As you said, an important item to consider is reusability: if you want to reuse your work between Crystal and WebI then you have to go with Universes. If you are ok in keeping the two in separate worlds then Business Views can still bring a lot of value to CR. Business views will stay in the market still for a long time (in mainteinance, so don't expect new features).
Looking at the future, we expect that In the long term, business views will be replaced by universes. Keeping this in mind, a migration of a report from an 'older' version of a universe to a new one will probably go smoother than a migration from a business view to a universe.

Crystal reports 2008 connection to universe

Hi ,
I am trying to create Crystal Reports using universe as a data source. I am able to logon BOE, select universe and then select the objects that I need to build a query. As soon as I click OK button I am getting "Logon Failed".
If i use SAP BW MDX Query as the connection it works fine.
i am able to run a webi report based on the same universe.
we are using BO XI 3.1 sp2

I have exactly the same problem. However, it seems to be unrelated to the authorizations. The connection works perfectly with one of the sample universes (efashion) which has exactly the same authorizations:
administrator and universe designer-user have full rights, all has no rights
I am a comlete novice in BO and very grateful for suggestions.
