Cs 6 render only on farm

Hey,
I can't get CS 6 to render on the farm after I installed AE CC.  I did put the text file in place as described here, but this did not work:
o enable non-royalty bearing mode, place a blank file named ae_render_only_node.txt into one of the following locations, depending on the user account type:
Install After Effects on the render-only machine.
Place a blank file named ae_render_only_node.txt into one of the following locations, depending on the user account type:
Mac locations:/Users/<username>/Documents//Users/Shared/Adobe/
Windows locations:C:\Users\<username>\DocumentsC:\Users\Public\Documents\Adobe
What am I missing?!?!

I'm running windows 7 pro 64 bit

  • AFX CS6 Render Only (windows)

I am having trouble in getting the non-royalty bearing mode to work on our farm.
    Instructions say
Place a blank file named ae_render_only_node.txt into one of the following locations, depending on the user account type:
      Windows locations:
    C:\Users\<username>\Documents
       C:\Users\Public\Documents\Adobe
However neither of these locations exist. the closest i can find are
    C:\Users\<username>\My Documents \Adobe
    C:\Users\Public\My Documents
But placing the ae_render_only_node.txt file in these locations, does not work.
How do i get this render only version to work?

    Hi,
it could be that network is using a roaming profile.
login as local machine administrator (machine_name\administrator) -> ensure the administrator account has a local profile.  This can be found control panel -> system -> advanced -> user profile  (select the local admin account and make sure the local profile is selected).
double check to make sure the node is running windows 7 is running SP1 (can check computer -> properties)
go to the cmd prompt (windows icon -> in search box -> cmd.exe)
    at command prompt
    md  %Public%\Documents\Adobe
notepad  %PUBLIC%\Documents\Adobe\ae_render_only_node.txt -> it will ask if you want to create the file, answer yes, then get save & exit notepad
download/install trial version of After Effects CS6 -> select try it option during install.
after AE CS6 is installed, run bridge & select help -> updates (this will get all the fixes for after effects).
    Hope it helps
edited for roaming profile & profile info.

  • Installing render only version on offline machines Mk2

    Hi there,
I need to install AE CC on 10 blade servers, but there doesn't seem to be a way of doing this withou doing it through the CC app.
There seems to be no sign of AE CC as a standalone app.
And no-one seems to be answering on this forum.
Can I take it then that this isn't possible?
Would it not be possible to create a standalone version of AE which is render only, and doesn't need to be installed via the CC app.
It's the ONLY CC app that works like this...
Would make it a lot easier for render farms and thus serious post work....

OK, I'm going to break this down a bit, because I can't get it to work..
We need some more steps here. This is not as simple as advertised...
Creative Cloud Packager for Creative Cloud Teams and Creative Cloud Enterprise
You do not need to follow the instructions above if you are deploying After Effects CC as part of a multi-seat license, Creative Cloud Teams or Creative Cloud Enterprise. Instead, use the Creative Cloud Packager (CCP) to deploy the software.
Er. So I managed to download and install CCP.
In this case, create the ae_render_only_node.txt file before deployment:
    1. Create the ae_render_only_node.txt file as described here, and use CCP to set the destination for this file.
So.... rewind a second.. How do you add this?
The CCP downloads a fresh copy of AE, and makes a CCP installer out of it automatically.
How would one create a package containing the .txt file?
Where is the option to include this file?
There's no option to do this.
    2. Deploy After Effects CC using Creative Cloud Packager.
OK. So how do I do that?
From the admin machine or the client machine?
If I copy the package onto the client machine, it needs CCP to install it.... which requires internet access.
Or do I do it from the admin machine... which I can't at the moment, because it's not seeing the client machine on the network....
(I should say at this point that C4d TeamRender is working using the same network, and was super-easy to set up...)
    So then I go here....
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/packager/creative-cloud-packager.html
If you are a Creative Cloud for teams customer, download Adobe Creative Cloud Packager from the Team Admin Portal in Adobe Creative Cloud.
OK. That was easy. Got it.
Using Creative Cloud Packager, you create Windows and/or Mac OS packages (MSI or PKG files) and then using any third-party deployment tool that supports the deployment of native installers (for example Microsoft SCCM, Apple ARD, or JAMF Casper Suite) deploy them to client machines.
OK. That's not so easy. Can't I just make something I can copy onto the client machines?
       Note:
It is recommended that Creative Cloud Packager should not be installed on a system where one or more Creative Suite products or Creative Cloud Manager products have been installed.
OK. That's not really possible as I don't have a spare machine just to make Adobe packages.
But made something anyway...Made sure I'd quit out of CC....
It's made a folder called RenderNode.
Copied it onto the client machine via my SAN.
Opened it up on the client machine.
There's another folder called 'Build' (looks promising...)
Hey.... there's a file called 'RenderNode' which is what I called the package. And it's a Windows installer..
    Double-click..... and.......
'Please wait while Windows configures RenderNode.'
    OK..... and waiting......and waiting......and waiting......and waiting......and waiting......and waiting......
Looks like this is going nowhere... Giving up......
I'm sure I'm doing something wrong here.
But this is like 10 times more complicated than the previous way of doing things...
Which in itself involves the .txt kludgey thing.
Wouldn't it just be lovely if there was a nice self-contained downloadable render-only app that you could just install?
Surely it wouldn't be that hard?

  • After Effects CC Output Modules on Render Only Machines

Hi there, I'm having an issue with custom Output Module Templates and my renderfarm:
After Effects CC 12.0.0.404 (showing as up to date in Creative Cloud)
Mac OS X 10.8.4 (Latest Mountain Lion version)
Mac Pro 2.93 GHz 8-Core, Radeon 5870, 32GB RAM and with Blackmagic Decklink Extreme 3D+
Remote Machines (there are four) are Mac Pros as well (Quad-core, running 10.7.2 with 16GB RAM), using the ae_render_only_node.txt file in their user Documents folder.
    The exact error:
aerender ERROR: No output module template was found with the given name.
I am trying to get a renderfarm working with After Effects CC (see exact version above). Unfortunately, I need custom output modules and I can't seem to get the render slaves to recognize them. I found older threads on this exact issue, but no solution was found.
I am using commandline aerender in OS X terminal to start a render with a basic test scene.
To simplify things, I have tried testing this on one render slave machine at a time... Same result everywhere.
    Here's what I've tried:
I exported a .aom file from my main machine (where I have my desired custom Output Modules) and attempted to bring it in on the render slaves. However, because the render slaves are render only, (they have ae_render_only_node.txt in their Documents folder), the ability to import Output Modules is disabled in After Effects (it opens as the After Effects Render Engine, and the Edit>Templates menu is greyed out).
Next, I thought I'd try copying the main machine's /Users/(user)/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/12.0 folder over to the render slaves, thinking that would get whatever preference file to them that's needed to define the output modules. No luck. Launched After Effects (which loads as After Effects Render Engine) and reset my disk cache preferences (so they weren't still the main machine's). Tried aerender again... no luck. Same error:
aerender ERROR: No output module template was found with the given name.
After that, I thought it would be a good idea to sign out of Adobe Creative Cloud on the main machine, and try logging into the render slave machine with my full UserID and Password and temporarily remove the ae_render_only_node.txt file. Then, I'd import the .aom file in the full version of AE... I tried this and success! The renders work... they find the Output Modules no problem. Only issue is, as soon as I sign out, and switch to using the ae_render_only_node.txt file, the Output Modules are not found. Not sure what's going on-- if the Output Modules are being disabled by the ae_render_only_node.txt file? Or maybe signing out of my Adobe ID is removing the preferences that determine Output Modules? Don't know where the Output Module preferences are stored to be able to tell.
Next attempt: I thought I'd try syncing my preferences with Creative Cloud. I made sure to check After Effects Sync Preferences to ensure that Output Modules are set to sync. I did a sync where I uploaded my preferences from the main machine. Then, on the render slaves, I ran Sync Preferences, and chose to download preferences. Works when signed in, but not when used as a render only node. When it's a render only node, it still prompts me to Download the Sync Preferences and Quit the Application, which I do, but nothing seems to happen. I try aerender again, and still the same error:
aerender ERROR: No output module template was found with the given name.
I can't seem to find any info on where Output Modules are actually stored (apparently they're not anywhere in the User/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/ folder?). Are render only nodes not allowed to have custom Output Modules? Not even for something as simple as the Multi-Machine Sequence with a post-render action of Set Proxy enabled?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thank You.

I've verified this problem and filed a bug. Sorry about the hiccup.
I've trying to pin down why this happens, and while I don't have a full explanation yet I think I've stumbled onto a workaround:
Trash the prefs on the render machine.
    Enable the ae_render_only_node.txt file.
Launch AE and then quit. <- This is a critical step. More on this later.
    Disable ae_render_only_node.txt file.
    Launch AE.
    Add your Output Module template.
    Quit AE.
    Enable the ae_render_only_node.txt file.
After you do this, I highly recommend making a backup copy of the Adobe After Effects 12.0 Prefs-indep-output.txt file. Just in case. I've had the failure reappear.
Now test with aerender and let me know if that works. It has on my machine.
Why does this matter? When you run AE with the ae_render_only_node.txt file enabled, it appears to add a new section to the preferences: "Output Module Preference Section v28-TRIAL". It's the TRIAL part that is important. Without it, AE doesn't seem to be able to keep track of the OM's when in render_only_node mode. And if you disable the ae_render_only_node.txt file, AE has a tendency to destroy the TRIAL section (I'm still tracing why that happens).
Now, should this not work for you, I recommend you work around the problem by adding your comps to the render queue in each project. When you do that, and change your aerender flags appropriately, you can render to your desired settings without specifying OMtemplate parameter.
    > I can't seem to find any info on where Output Modules are actually stored (apparently they're not anywhere in the User/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/ folder?).
You probably already discovered this. In After Effects CC the OM data is stored in the Adobe After Effects 12.0 Prefs-indep-output.txt file. In older versions of AE, a single pref file such as Adobe After Effects 11.0-x64 Prefs.txt holds all of this data.
Let me know if that workaround does the trick for you. If I get more information on the cause of the problem I'll update you.

  • Idle "Render Only - Mixdown" question

Compressor is chugging away so I'm taking a moment to wonder aloud.
I am assembling a variety of sequences into a master sequence. One sequence -- 10 audio tracks including SFX with modulated levels -- played back fine. When stuffed into the master sequence, however, this sequence played back with many sound levels unmodulated.
For the record, the fix was to select the relucant audio tracks and manually apply Render Only -> Mixdown. (This is after I tried all other audio rendering commands.)
Is this a bug or a feature?

One thing that will sometimes fix recalcitrant nests is to select the nest in the containing timeline, control click and choose "remove attributes" make sure nothing is selected and hit OK.

  • Render only only one side of 3d displayObject?

With CS4 is it possible to set a 3d DisplayObject to render only the front side and not the back side - like you can in papervision?

This has happened to me several times also with my powerbook. I fixed it by going into finder > Applications > Utilities and then opening Audio MIDI Setup. Apparently the audio output on my left speaker for some odd reason lowered. So even if I fixed the balance, there was no sound on my left speaker until I raised the volume from here. There's two sliders under Audio Output towards the bottom. Adjust those.

  • AERender render only mode, restricted codecs, and errors

There is a page here detailing how to put aerender into restricted mode, so that a license key isn't required.
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/aftereffects/cs/using/WS3878526689cb91655866c1103a4f2dff7-79a3 a.html#WS3878526689cb91655866c1103a4f2dff7-79a2a
There is a page here explaining that we can use "network rendering (aerender and watch folder) without activation of render-only nodes" and that a limitation is "In this mode, some codec-specific features are disabled—primarily use of MPEG codecs."
    http://blogs.adobe.com/toddkopriva/2012/04/after-effects-cs6-whats-new-and-changed.html
Does anyone know what codecs specifically work and which ones don't? I don't know how anyone is supposed to know this. I've tried testing but I get stuck because everytime I enable render only mode, I get an error saying:
aerender ERROR: No output module template was found with the given name.
Which doesn't make any sense, because when I disable render only mode everything works fine. I've tried with a number of different templates and it happens to all of them, h264 mp4 and 3gp, m2v, png sequence, and lossless AVI.

MPEG CoDecs are H.264 and all MPEG-2 flavors as well as MP3 audio and that. The other error could merely point to permission issues when in render mode, but naturalyl, if you do this on teh same system, the render only version will stil lread your normal prefs, which could include references to the then invalid output modules...

  • Installing render-only version -

In the past I was able to install the render-only version  (render engine) of AE on several computers with only the 1 license for the full version. Now I am being asked for a license key each time I try to install the render-only version. What am I doing wrong??
Contacting support on the weekends gives you a person who doesn't understand English enough to help. In fact, I was told that I needed to buy more licenses to install the render engine for network rendering.
I contacted the licensing department (during the week) and I was told that I did NOT need a license for the render-only version.
Yet here I am still stuck without the ability to network render with After Effects.

Thanks for that. I have an idea...
How about letting the render engines output only an Adobe formatted file? That way there are no license fee issues?? It could be converted to some other format latter in a "fully licensed" version.
    Any Adobe reps reading this?

  • How do I pre-render only portions of the timeline or selected clips?

I'm switching from Vegas Pro to Premiere Pro. In Vegas, you select a portion of the timeline, then hit control-B and it pre-renders that segment.
In Premiere, you hit enter, but it doesn't pay attention to the selected clips, it just pre-renders the entire sequence.
This wouldn't be such a big problem except I'm managing projects that are fairly long, with 20-30 sequences and 20 or so nested sequences in each project and I'm switching between around 18 different projects for a series of 23 or so videos.
These vids are already taxing my system resources with only a few minutes or so (referencing about 80-120gb of source footage), but my office comp is kinda weak.
The problem is that when I pre-render a nested sequence and bring it back to the main timeline, I have to pre-render it *again* after making the next set of adjustments (ie color correction, transitions etc). Then I have to do it AGAIN when I copy it to another timeline for another similar project.
Every time, it can take as long as 15 or 20 minutes (my video card is an nVidia GTX 560 Ti, it has CUDA, but prem doesn't support it for some reason).
When my main timeline glitched out, forcing me to split into different projects, it took me almost 4 hours just to copy things into place with the additional 20 minutes to load the glitched file.
Then I had to go and pre-render everything again to work my edits back into place.
Even when everything is 90% correctly laid out, I still have to wait for the entire sequence to finish pre-rendering.
As above, in Vegas Pro, I just select a portion of the timeline and the pre-render sticks to that area.
I saw an article that said you could create in and out points and use that for rendering, but it doesn't seem to be a CS6 thing.
I heard that Adobe was trying to keep CS6 up to date as a parallel thing to CC. Surely I don't have to switch to a $600/year subscription just so I can pre-render portions of the timeline like a lower-end competitor program has had for something like 5 years...?
What am I missing? There has to be a way to do this simply.

    Are you sure?
I have only 3 options on my Sequence menu.
The first is: Render Effects in Work Area (default shortcut - Enter)
    Then: Render Entire Work Area
    and: Render Audio
No other Render options are available from that menu.
Oddly, those two things are virtually identical. One of them shows 52 clips, the other showed 57 clips. With 26389 frames (approximately...) ETA is around 20-25 mins. That's not very workflow friendly.
It is smart enough that if I pre-render once, making minor changes later makes for much less pre-rendering work, but because I'm working with so many similar projects and sequences, all of them end up needing to be completely re-pre-rendered even if I'm doing a copy-paste and I need to tweak a few little things in one area of the timeline.
This was especially evident recently when in a 3 hour period, I had to go through 4 revisions and needed to keep my original iterations because the person who made the broad, sweeping decisions was making really bad decisions and I knew I would end up going back to my original plan and making a few comparatively simple changes (which is exactly what happened right after the 3 hours).
Out of 3 hours, I could have lost a good hour and a half just waiting around for pre-rendering stuff that hard already been pre-rendered, but because it had been copy-pasted, Prem couldn't see those previous pre-renders.
I actually only lost around 40 mins. But I had to reshoot footage, including setting up lights and camera angles, plus import and do color correction again thanks to no round-tripping to speedgrade and having shot in other areas with those cameras...
If I had been doing it in Vegas, I would have spent only around 10 minutes doing those pre-renders. Oh and Vegas can use my GPU... I'm an Adobe guy mainly, so it's frustrating to see Vegas win on silly niggles like this.

  • Why does Adobe Premiere Elements 12 render only audio?

I have a brand new laptop with all required specs to run Adobe Premiere. I only have the trial version of PRE12 at the moment. The program itself actually runs great, but I can't seem to get it to render correctly. I film on a GoPro Hero 3 White Edition camera and have been unable to get it to render any video filmed on it. I am rendering MPEGS at 1920X1080i 30fps ( which is the exact video the gorpo is said to record). This may even be a problem with wiindows media player, which II am attempting to view rendered videos on. I don't know what else to try!

    ilikepike7
Premiere Elements 12 on what computer operating system?
There are two types of rendering in Premiere Elements - Timeline render which is a preview thing to get the best possible preview of the Timeline content as viewed in the Edit area monitor AND render in the export sense of the word.
I am assuming that you are asking about render in the export sense of the word.
    1. Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer along with Premiere Elements 12? If not, please do so.
Also go to Publish+Share/Computer/QuickTime and see if you have presets there for QuickTime.
    2. Are you running Premiere Elements 12 from a User Account with Administrative Privileges and also with Run As Administrator applied via the desktop icon for the program.
Lots and lots more questions I could ask, but for now please see if we can find the solution in the above.
    Thanks.

  • Expressions/Effects on final render only

I have a general workflow question that I think is worth discussing.
Our production uses a LOT of expressions.  Possibly too many -- it seems AE is not happy with evaluating hundreds and hundreds of expressions every frame.
However, many of these expressions aren't really necessary when doing RAM Previews or when working in general.  They are only needed when the final product is rendered.
An example is an expression that makes properties "animate on twos", that is, skip every other frame.  This expression is on almost every single layer, except for a few that need to be on ones.
I am wondering if anyone has figured out a workflow that allows for expressions to be somehow skipped until a real render is made.  I would also ask the same about effects.
    Thank you!

"specifying that an expression should only be evaluated once"
Add a posterizeTime or if (time == 0) at the beginning of your expression
"or only evaluated on "draft" or something like that"
Use a checkbox on another layer to control whether expressions should be calculated or not.
    "Better handling of errors "
    add try/catch in your code
So you could do something like:
    if (time == 0 && comp("...").layer("...").effect("Use Expressions")(1))
        // your heavy expression
    else value;
Global functions may be useful, but global variables would make thing terribly messy. Plus when you add an expression control you basically create a global variable (even though you can't set it's value).

  • Can't seem to render only a small section of film

    Dear All,
I've been trying to finish a film which is made up of still images, audio and (the only effects) dissolves. When, having made an adjustment to an image, I try to render just that small section, there seems to be no change. My timeline is still marked with a green 'unrendered' line. I've tried highlighting the two relevant shots and then rendering them, but no dice. I looked on the forum, and I quote your excellent Tom Wolsky:
"You can render a part of the timeline by making sure nothing is selected in the timeline and marking In and Out points"
I've tried that too. Still no luck. For the record, the command I'm using is "Cmd-R" rather than "Alt-R", which renders the entire file. But the latter seems to be my only recourse, and takes at least an hour each time! Surely I'm getting something wrong ...
    Look forward to your help!
    Roger

Thanks, Tom. Your speedy and clear response is much appreciated.
I've just taken your first suggestion (checked the green bar in Sequence-Render Selection) and it seems to be working - but the progress bar still tells me that it's going to take around 20 minutes. Is this reasonable? Or do I have further difficulties? When I've tried to play the sequence without rendering it's got stuck, and a dialog has told me that 'one or more frames were dropped during playback'. I've tried keeping RT playback to 'safe' etc., but this situation doesn't seem quite the optimum. Am I still missing something?
    Thanks again,
    Roger

  • FCPX Project Render Settings - Can you edit in h.264 and Transcode/render only used clips on timeline to Prores during render?

I have a question on the PROJECT RENDER settings in FCP X. It’s seems to me that one could theoretically import and edit entirely with original h.264 video files without needing to Transcode to ProRes422. Once you’re done with your edit and want to get the added benefits of COLOR GRADING in ProRes422 color space, it seems that FCPX will automatically render your edit in ProRes422 according to these preferences. In that case, a color grade could be applied to the whole edit, and be automatically transcoded/rendered into ProRes 422 during the render process. After rendering, what would show up on the viewer and what would EXPORT would be the rendered Prores files and not the original h.264 files. This saves a lot of time and space of transcoding ALL your media, and in theory should enable you to edit NATIVE video formats like h.264, with automatic benefits of ProRes during render.  I'm assuming the render may take longer because FCPX is having to convert h.264 video files to ProRes422 while rendering. This may be one drawback. But will you your color grade actually use the 4:2:0 color space of the h.264 native media, or will it utilize 4:2:2 color space, since the render files are set to render to ProRes422 ? Can anyone please confirm that this theory is correct and optimal for certain work flows?? Thanks!

Thanks Wild. That's what I thought - in that the render files would be converted to ProRes422 codec. So do you or anyone else think that there is an advantage to having the 4:2:0 original file be processed in a 4:2:2 color space?
Yes there is an advantage, any effects and grading will look better than in a 4:2:0 space.
Most professionals online seem to think so. Also - will rendering of heavy effects and color grading take longer using this method because it's having to convert h.264 media to ProRes during render?
Yes, it will definitely take longer.
Can anyone verify from a technical standpoint whether editing and color grading in this workflow will see the same benefits as having transcoded the h.264 media to ProRes in the first place?
Same benefits from a final product view point, you lose on rendering time though and if you have lots of effects things will seem slow as it will have render everytime from the h264 file rather than a Pro Res file for every change you make. This may be fine on a higher end mac but I'm sure just pummels an older lower end mac as to being almost useless.

  • After Effects CS6 render-only: Custom output modules?

With After Effects CS5.5, we've been able to include custom output module templates (so, aside from the default Lossless, TIFF Sequence with Alpha, etc.).  We're having trouble doing the same with CS6.  Is there any way to make this work?

this explains what we are trying to use, non-royalty-bearing mode.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2012/06/codecs-and-the-render-engine-in-after-effects- cs6.html
please understand we are using a render queue to remotely execute aerender from the commandline.

this is the command that is entered:
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CS6\Support Files\aerender.exe" -project "\\nas3\graphics\jobs\13912_SHIELD\cmp\BB\BB_CS6_Test2\BB_CS6_Test2.aep" -comp "HeroComp" -output "\\nas3\graphics\jobs\13912_SHIELD\images\BB\BB_CS6_Test2\BB_CS6_Test2.[####].sgi"   -v "ERRORS_AND_PROGRESS" -RStemplate "Full" -OMtemplate "SGI_Premultiplied" -s 11 -e 20
if we place ae_render_only_node.txt into the appropriate folder this is the error that is generated:
    has video RAM(MB): 0
    aerender version 11.0x378
PROGRESS: Adding specified comp to Render Queue
aerender ERROR: No output module template was found with the given name.

    LoadLibrary "n" failed!
if we register the software aerender correctly renders the frames.
note: the sgi file format does not have codec licensing restrictions such as mpeg2.

  • Render only lasts 7 Per cent

    Hi
when rendering a three hour video it says writing video  estimating time about two hours, but after it gets to seven per cent it seems to stop as in the box disapears, also along over the video it is bluey gray then orange, what dose orange mean?

This is for Final Cut Express, correct, not FCP-X?
