CS3 Upgrade & Camera Raw 4.5 = MAJOR HEADACHE!

I bought a D300. Then found out that the only way to use Photoshop with it was to upgrade the Camera Raw plug-in to 4.5, which could ONLY be used with CS3. So NOW I have THOUSANDS of dollars in camera gear and software that has caused me more headaches than putting 4 kids through high school.
P4, 4 GB RAM a gazzilion bytes of hard drive space and I'm getting the dreaded blue screen of death after going through 3 or 4 photos in CS3's Bridge.
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT or something like that. I've emailed support and nothing. Very disappointing to say the least.
I've got it down to faulting after going through about 10 pics now but NOW, on SOME of the Nikon (.NEF) files, it's telling me that "Photoshop CS2 cannot be found!"
I'm sorry, but I'm very close to dousing this thing with lighter fluid and sending the ashes back to Adobe. I have over 1000 photos to process from the weekend it's it's IMPOSSIBLE to do it with these errors.
YES, I did the Camera Raw update per the instructions.

Elginet - your error message points to RAM problems. Perhaps your PS uses more RAM than other software and therefore the error only shows up when using PS. You could try to remove part of the memory just to locate the problem if it is within one or two memory banks. With 2 GByte the computer should run PS even though a bit slow. Once you located the problem you could either replace the defective memory or replace the whole set depending on your configuration.
It is not necessarily a hardware fault it could be a setting for memory access in the BIOS.
Basically CS3 and ACR4.5 work fine on many computers and it is very stable on my machine under Win XP-pro. Be certain it is not a general problem.
Best of luck that you can resolve your problem.
Cheers

  • Trying to upgrade Camera Raw- Elements file agent won't allow

While trying to upgrade Camera Raw, Elements 5.0 has an error message that says to turnoff Elements 5.0 File agent. I cannot find this anywhere. I use CS3 and Elements 5.0 but cannot upgrade to the new camera raw. Any one know how to shut off Photoshop Elements 5.0 file agent.exe ???
    Thanks.

The file PhotoshopElementsFileAgent.exe is located in C:\Program
Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 5.0. It may be on the list of Windows XP
Services. Possibly also listed as Adobe Active File Monitor or Adobe Active
File Monitor V5. Set any and all of these services to 'Disabled'.
Additionally, it is a good idea to go to Elements Organizer preferences and
uncheck 'Automatically check for Services' and also uncheck 'Auto Launch
Adobe File Downloader on Device Connect'.
And, yes, ACR 4.3.1 should be manually installed. As a matter of fact, turn
off the automatic updater service, too (in >Help).

  • Unable to upgrade Camera Raw with CS4 in Lion...

    Hi All,
very frustrating; I have been unable to upgrade Camera Raw despite several attempts.
I've downloaded the latest version as an upgrade; I've done Software upgrades through PhotoShop, but for some
reason these do not seem to have taken, ie., the version of ACR in Bridge preferences remains 5.0.
This makes it impossible for the computer (a brand new MacBook Pro) to read or convert to DNG raw files
    from a Nikon D300S.
Oddly, ACR 5.0 converts raw files from a D700 just fine.
Also puzzling is that my attempt to upgrade to ACR 5.7 in a 5 month old iMac have been smooth as silk (OS 10.6.7)
    Help!

At one point, I was one of the most vocal critics of camera raw in the CS4 / Lightroom v2 days. In short, I felt that there was not enough control over noise reduction and fine detail rendition when processing digital camera raw files, especially at higher ISOs, although I had been quite pleased with earlier versions. That all changed when CS5 / LR v3 was released. You now have an enormous amount of control over exactly how much sharpening and how much noise reduction will be applied to an image. The amount of fine detail one can extract from a low-ISO raw file is extraordinary. When you crank up the ISO and an image gets noisy, you now can choose whether or not you prefer a smoother look at the expense of some of the more subtle texture details, or a slightly grainier look where one has a feeling that no significant fine details are lost from the original capture (what I prefer). The raw processing defaults in Adobe's latest software are good starting points, but for my personal tastes, I generally do modify them a bit with less NR and slightly more sharpening at a smaller radius.
Even out-of-camera JPEG files will benefit from the new processing engine. I find that turning down the sharpening and NR in-camera, and then applying some subtle tweaking in LR, for example, makes for much better looking images even when starting from a JPEG. If you are a raw shooter, like I am, then upgrading to the latest Photoshop and Lightroom is absolutely 100% worthwhile in my opinion!
I personally feel that the quality of raw conversions in Adobe's latest software are pretty much the best there are. I have used many other raw converters (Capture One, Aperture, RAW Developer, Silky Pix, Canon's DPP etc.), and while each have their strengths, overall I far prefer the look of the final image from Adobe's latest software. Sure, I might find the colour rendition slightly better, in some cases, from some other raw converters, but colour I can fix. Poor detail rendition or heavy-handed/crude noise reduction I cannot.
EDIT: Also should mention how good the lens correction controls are. Not only are there automatic lens corrections available (possibly of limited use with an M8 due to potential lack of lens EXIF information), but the manual corrections are extremely useful. Chromatic aberration, vignetting, highlight fringing and distortion control all work extremely well and are minimally harmful to image quality, unlike performing those same corrections in Photoshop after the raw conversion stage. You also have excellent perspective corrections that, amazingly enough, seem to have very little impact on image quality even when fairly dramatic adjustments are made.
Lastly, I own both Noise Ninja and Topaz DeNoise and since upgrading to Adobe's latest software, I don't think I have felt the need to use either of those two third party NR plugins once. Purely from a noise reduction standpoint, upgrading to CS5 or LR v3 is almost like getting a new camera, almost like moving from a cropped sensor to a full-frame as far as high-ISO image quality.
I would suggest you download Lightroom v3 and give the 30 trial version a whirl. Spend some time in the Detail section of the Develop module and make sure that for each image you are looking at, ones that you may have edited in previous versions of Camera Raw or Lightroom, that you have "2010(Current)" chosen in the "Process:" section of the CameraCalibration tab in Develop. That will ensure that you are fully benefitting from the latest raw conversion engine. Zoom in to 100% before you tweak the Detail settings to make sure you are seeing actual pixel-level detail. I think you may be amazed at what you can do...

  • Image opens in CS3 not Camera Raw

Recently when i open a dng image it opens in CS3 not Camera Raw. How do I get the raw/dng images to open in Camera Raw?
    Thanks

From Bridge, highlight the image(s) you want to open in Camera Raw and then press Ctrl+R.

  • Problem using/upgrading camera raw

I have Windows 7/64 bit. When I first installed Photoshop CS5, I immediately upgraded Camera Raw. Later, after opening Bridge from Photoshop, I found I could not get Bridge to open a file in Camera Raw. I knew that Raw was working because I had previously opened an Adobe lesson file using it. When I attempted to open one of my files I received an error message: "Bridge's parent application is not active". I have since learned that Bridge will only open a file in Raw, if Bridge is initiated from the 32bit version of Photoshop (or if the 32bit version of Photoshop is open). OK, I thought I'd solved the problem, ie open both the 32bit and 64bit versions of photoshop and then access to Raw is fine. However, I then decided to upgrade Camera Raw in the 32bit version of Photoshop. When I then attempted to open what I thought was the 32bit version, I got the 64bit version instead and, of course, lost the access to Raw.
I've only learned this after uninstalling and re-installing several times. I'm now not willing to upgrade Camera Raw for fear of losing access to it again. This is not a very satisfactory situation.
Does anyone understand what is going on, and whether there is a work-around?
    Thanks
    Grahame M

There's nothing wrong here. You only all too quickly updated it. You need to run PS at least once, and open an image via ACR (the one that it installs by default), so it configures itself. Once that has happened, updates should go smoothly without all the higgledy-piggledy. For more specific guidance ask in the ACR and Photoshop forums.

Okay, now your in the right library.Use the plugin from this page to replace the existing one in your screenshot.
(don't forget to remove the plugin folder and plugin you created in your user library)http://helpx.adobe.com/bridge/kb/acr-84-bridge-cs6-metadata.htmlThen you'll probably need to purge the Bridge CS6 cache.http://forums.adobe.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-6306475-630487/450-209/Untitle d-1.png

  • Mac computer: New Nikon d300s, CS3, and Camera Raw

I just purchased a Nikon d300s. I had a Nikon d50, Mac, iPhoto, CS3, and Camera Raw 4.6.0.30. With Nikon d50,  no problem opening an image from iPhoto into Camera Raw/CS3. With the new D300s, the image opens into CS3 but does not open into Camera Raw. Do I have to buy CS4?

No, you do not have to. You can alternatively use the DNG Converter, which will process your D300S NEF files into DNG files, which can then be opened in CR 4.6 in CS3. The latest version of the DNG Converter, which supports the D300S, is currently in Release Candidate phase and is available here:

  • CS3 and camera raw for Nikon D5000

I have dowloded the 4.6 plug in (installed automaticallywith updater). I still can not open my raw images
in cs3.  Is the Nikon D5000 only supported by cs4?

Camera RAW support is only added to whatever version of Photoshop is current at the time the camera is released which would have been CS4 for your newish camera.
CS5 is just around the corner (next 2-3 months) as is Lightroom 3, which will both have the ACR 6 color engine so if you can wait, that would be the version to upgrade to.
In the mean time, you can use the DNG Converter 5.6 to convert your RAWs to DNG (saving the original RAW somewhere in case something happens) and use whatever version of ACR you want.   The DNG Converter will give you a choice of what version of ACR to be backwards compatible with.

You are looking at the WRONG Library, Catherine.  What you describe is the Library in your user folder (home folder) and you don't want that.
You want the Library at the ROOT level of your hard disk, not your user Library.

    No.
If you have CS3 only and your camera is not supported by ACR 4.6, then you also need to download the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter 5.3 which does not need any version of Photoshop to run.  You need to launch it, convert your raw files to DNGs, then open the DNGs in Camera Raw 4.6 hosted by CS3.
Here's a list of which version of Camera Raw supports which camera models:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb407111&sliceId=2
You can skip the DNG Converter step if you upgrade to Photoshop 11.0.1 ("CS4") and update to ACR 5.3, which is a far more powerful and versatile version of Camera Raw.

  • How do I upgrade camera raw codecs in adobe cs 5

How do I upgrade The CAMERA RAW CODECS in Adobe CS5?

What do you mean?  Are you looking for thumbnails in Windows Explorer (which is most often what the word "codec" is associated with)?  Or something else?
If something else, please state what camera you have.  Old versions of Camera Raw will not be able to open files from new cameras.
You can determine exactly when Adobe released support for your new camera in Photoshop.  To do that, look at these two pages.  You'll want to find out the earliest version of Camera Raw that can support your camera, then what version of Photoshop can run that version of Camera Raw.
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
If your version of Photoshop cannot support your camera directly, you can download and install the latest version of the free Adobe DNG Converter, which can take your raw files as input and put out DNG format files, which your version of Photoshop can open.

  • Bridge CS3 and Camera Raw

Hello, I have Bridge CS3 that came with Adobe Web Standard that I bought when I have doing web design. I also have Photoshop CS that I use for my camera digital editing. At a camera club today they were using Bridge and Photoshop CS5 to show what it can do. The man completing the demo said that Camera Raw was inbuilt into Bridge and that I should have it. I've been using Adobe DNG convertor for my RAW editing as I didn't know nothing about Camera Raw but seeing it in action and how much better it is over the DNG I want to use that instead.
I've searched high and low for Camera Raw on my PC but I cannot find it. I've tried downloading it from here but it says No and to quit.
My RAW files have the .DNG extension if that makes a difference.
So, am I missing Camera Raw and if so, how can I get it :?:
    Thanks

You can download the latest update of ACR for your software version here....
