CS4 application bar randomly disappears

I run into this problem pretty often (I'll need to screenshot it the next time it happens), but the application bar at the top (the one containing the buttons for Bridge, Extras, Zoom level, Arrange Documents, Screen Mode, etc) randomly goes AWOL, leaving a transparent bar that shows my desktop instead.  When I click in the area, the buttons still respond, but I have no idea what I'm clicking because I don't see anything.
I'm running Win XP with nVidia GeForce9800GTX+, and PS CS4.  A driver update just came out today so I've just updated it now, so we'll see if it has any effect.  But this has been happening for quite a while.
And I already saw the thread about third-party plug-ins, but I don't have any.  Aside from drivers/plugins...are there any other possible culprits I can look into?

I'm running Win XP with nVidia GeForce9800GTX+, and PS CS4.  A driver update just came out today so I've just updated it now, so we'll see if it has any effect.  But this has been happening for quite a while.
When I experience a GUI display issue (or troubleshoot one), the video driver update is my very first action.
Though I have not heard of this for sometime, the second step is the mouse driver, especially if it's a MS InteliPoint, or Logitec SetPoint driver. In the past, there have been several "bad" InteliPoint drivers, that cause issues with many Adobe programs. I have had similar with one SetPoint driver. Should this be the cause, I just install the MS Generic mouse driver, until a new, specific driver is released, and then I test it. Though I have never had an issue with any Wacom driver, I suppose that the same could be said for it, too. I would speculate that as so many Wacom users are also using Adobe products, that all of their drivers get an extensive workout in Adobe programs, where mouse drivers are for about all programs, and less specific in their use.
Good luck,

  • My music store search bar randomly disappears ever since installing IOS7 on iPhone and Ipad.

When using the "Store" link in the to left corner of the Music App to go to the music store to make a purchase, my music store search bar randomly disappear.  This started after installing ios 7 on both my iPhone 5S and Ipad.  When this happens I am unable to search for music to purchase.  App Store search bar for actual apps seems to work fine.

Same here. I'm guessing what may have happened is that the HTML page in the app or the content on that page may have only partially loaded, and unfortunately there is no way to trigger a refresh of that page - either through any user activity like reopen the app, or any refresh button.

  • CS4 Application Bar

I am using Illustrator CS4 on a Vista OS and don't see the red, yellow and green circles on the Application Bar. Can anyone help?

In Illustrator CS4, there is no Application Bar or Application Frame on Windows (XP or Vista). Also there are no red, yellow and green circles on Windows either - they are there on the Mac.

  • PS CS4 menu bar sometimes disappears (parts of it)

Now and then, part of my menu bar disappears - the section just to the right of "help" - I think the first icon for this particular bar is to open Bridge. I've included a screen shot of my issue - notice that area seems to show my desktop (or whatever is open behind PS). I think this has something to do with my graphics card. I have a nVidia GEForce 9500 GT (driver version 6.14.11.9107 from 9/27/09). The driver is current. When this issue comes up, I have to literally reboot for that secion of the menu bar to reappear. Simply logging off and back on doesn't do it. When this menu bar section "does" appear, when I mouse over the icons, the "roll over" icon is blank - or just solid grey. I don't think that is how it's supposed to look.
I've also had trouble (recently and in the near past) with my "show grid" setting (reference: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/493932?tstart=0). For example, I would create a document 72px x 72px @ 72ppi - make my grid visible (grid settings are set to show 1 grid line every 1px & 1 subdivision). When zooming into any corner of the image, I could see the grid lines were offset (example images on my reference post) - this is not to be confused with the pixel grid. I'm wondering if these issues are related to each other and/or because of my graphics card. The grid line offset issue was previously fixed by deleting my preferences, but sine this is happening again, my guess is something is causing the "grid" to show improperly. I've tested with and without GPU enhancements enabled in PS preferences. I just can't find a common thread in which causes these issues.
If I still have your attention, I would like to add an "off topic" issue (maybe somoene reading this can help on the other issue too). In reference to http://forums.adobe.com/thread/508982?tstart=0, no one has really been able to answer this or confirm/deny they get the same results. This has to do with viewing document size, and the unit of measurement seems to get stuck on cm (I want it to remain on inches like it always did with CS3) - maybe I should go back to CS3. Whenever I have rulers set to pixels, the document size locks to cm. The only way I can see inches in document size is if my rulers are set to inches. To me, it makes sense to have rulers set to pixels (for many reasons), but when it comes time to print, change canvas size, etc., I want to see the document size in inches. I don't know if this is normal, but when I go to create a new document, in the preset drop down list for "default photoshop size", it's unit is cm. Could that have something to do with my cm issue? I'm already made sure my regional settings are US, and unit settings are set according to attached image (unitSettings.jpg).
At this point, I'm going mad because these little bity querks just drive me up the wall to the point I can't get anything done because I'm always troublshooting. If anyone can shed some light on any/all of these topics, you would save me from slicing a wrist or two Thanks...

Are you having rendering issues with other software or just with Adobe PS CS4?
At the moment, I'm not really using any other programs which would call for any rendering. Videos seem to play fine, so other than PS, I'm not using any other programs.
Did you update CS4 to 11.0.1?
I just did, so I guess I have to play the waiting game now. The roll over issue I mentioned before is still giving me just a gray square roll over state. I don't know what (if anything) is supposed to show on roll over. What do you see when you roll over any of those buttons?
Also you might want to update Directx. I know it has nothing to do with
opengl but some posters in the past have reported that some things got
    better.
    I currently have version
When I tried to update at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b -bc6a-9b6652cd92a3, and install, I would get this error Even though I meet the requirements for this update, something is not letting me. I even made sure my Cryptographic Services was enabled and started. When opening PS, there were times I would get an error something to the effect that PS had a problem with the display driver so something or another was disabled (which I'm thinking it was just not allowing open GL drawing (which was usually around the time I would notice that menu bar section I posted about previously).
Also sometimes newer video card drivers are not the best drivers for a
given application. Have you went back to a set of older drivers to see
if that may cure the problem?
I've rolled back my graphics driver. Will have to wait and see if that solved anything.
    As for
the ruler problem some people, from what I have read, have the same or
simular issue. There is a recent thread about 2 or 3 days ago that had
a ruler problem and I don't think it was fixed.
The recent thread was probably mine. I didn't mean to double post about that topic, but sometimes when just one person responds (and usually doesn't have anything helpful to say), others will just pass up that post. This issue is maddening, so maybe one day it will fix itself or I will move on.
Thanks for your time, I will post back if anything else goes wrong - I mean "when" something else goes wrong.

  • Problem with icons in the application bar (Photoshop CS4)

My computer's OS is WinXP Pro SP3.
I just now noticed a problem with all icons in the application bar in PS CS4 (v. 11.0.1).
When I bring mouse over icons (except for zoom level icon), all icons turn into blank (white) boxes.
For "Arrange Documents" bar, when I click on its blank icon, the top two columns are empty but show the the rest of three columns.
Please advise me how to fix this problem.  I hope to avoid uninstalling -reinstallinlg.  Thanks.

ATI no longer supports your card so I don't think you will see any updated drivers from them to correct your problem. You might want to look into investing in a newer card.

  • How to hide tab bar and application bar? In ID CS4.

    Hello all!
Please help! Maybe someone have idea how to disable both?
It is only waste of space imo. Will not use them for sure...
Never opening more than 2-3 docs and than can easy use shortcut ctrl+`. Tabbed pages are good in web browser imho... Application bar is also just useless and (as menu itself) too fat. Most of those are in menu and have shortcuts. New features could be in menu as well.
Don't know why interface changed so much. And why this direction.
I know monitors are bigger nowdays etc - but are wider rather than higher.
Also - maybe new interface is great and ppl love it - but would be nice to have a choice. Some may prefere maximize workspace...
    M.

    Thanks for responses...
Yes - mac users can be really happy. What about PC? What was wrong with classical menu?
Are designers really works with several documents the same time? So need to use tabs? Well maybe. But those who works with just one or two don't need it really. (Maybe easy solution could be: one doc = no tab, more = tabbed, would be more natural imvho. As well as turning it off for PC users as well.)
So really no trick similar to 'noallcaps'? Notabsbar? Noapplicationbar?
"You can turn off the tabs in the preferences, interface section."
Yes, I can - but no more place coz of this... Window isn't maximized in fact - is floating, what also personally I don't like. Anyway - it is the same size and use the same space as before... If u make next one doc it is even smaller, to show bottom one. Maximizing it to full screen... hiding menu and docked 'control panel' (OK this docked menu can float, np - but where is menu?).
As for maximized letter size document in CS3 vs CS4 it's 131% to 129% on my lcd. Sure - it is not much maybe. But why it must be less? Why to change smthng what was good and aesthetic solution. And why not allow people to use it in classical way? Are Mac users ("to keep the hardcore Mac users happy") better than others? :(

  • Missing icons in application bar Bridge CS4

I couldn't find an answer to this in documentation or forums; hopefully this is not redundant.
Using CS4, both on a G5 machine with Leopard and a MacIntel machine with Snow Leopard.
Frequently when I use bridge (I always have it open), the whole section of icons in the Application bar on the right (Sort by filename, new folder, trash can, etc) are gone.  Everything else is the same.  It isn't switched to compact mode.  I have to reset the workspace to get them back.
Am I hitting some weird short-cut inadvertently or doing something else to make this happen?
    thanks

It is an unsolved mystery that happens every now and then, sometimes not for
    months, sometimes every week.
To cure go to the menu window and put a checkmark before the Pathbar, that
    should bring them back

  • Why has my safari icon disappeared from the applications bar after the recent software update?

Everything was working perfectly until I uploaded the most recent software update. When I restarted my laptop I found that the Safari icon had disappeared from my applications bar.  If I go to my 'recent places' and click on Safari it then reappears but only until I close the laptop down as the next time I start it up, it's nowhere to be seen.  Can anyone help?

by applications bar you mean "dock"? After you click on recent places and start safari it will reappear in the dock and at this point you will want to control + click (right click) on the SAFARI icon and hover to options, make sure that "KEEP IN DOCK" has a check mark next to it. If it does not, click that option. Now it will keep the Safari Icon in your dock.

  • FW CS4 Mac: Top left of window lost under Tools Panel and Application Bar

    Hello!
Somehow Fireworks started opening all my windows pushed to the top left, and tucked under the tools panel and the new Applications Bar - the only way to move windows, is to un-snap the bars and pull them off of the top of the screen -- really annoying.  I tried throwing out FW CS4's prefs files - no help.  Changing the view mode - no help...
    Help?

These are the steps that should be followed:
    Restore default preferences
    Quit Fireworks.
Locate the Fireworks      Preferences file on your hard disk and delete it.
The exact location of this file varies from system to system.
In Windows, preferences are      in your user-specific Fireworks configuration folder.
        Windows [Drive]:\Documents and Settings\[UserName]\Application Data\Adobe\Fireworks CS#\English\
In Mac OS, preferences are in      the Library/Preferences folder in your user folder. For information about      locating your Mac OS user folder, see Apple Help.
    Mac              [User]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Fireworks CS#/en/Fireworks Preferences
Note: On Mac OS, most      Fireworks user-specific configuration files are stored in your      user-specific Application Support folder.
The Fireworks CS4 Preferences file is an exception.
    3.  Restart Fireworks.
The next time Fireworks is launched, a new preferences      file will be created that restores Fireworks to its original      configuration.

  • CS4 Applications Quit on Save & Random Quits

Since we installed Snow Leopard all CS4 applications quit on save or randomly quit.
After removing the Preference pane 'Growl' this has fixed our problem.

I have seen the same random quitting (usually on save or save as... though) in CS3 (Illustrator and Photoshop). I have not tried removing Growl, but will.

  • Illustrator cs4 application icon disappeared...

    Hello,
Recently the illustrator application icon has dissapeared on me...
    I'm running win7 64bit.
I've found several threads discussing this problem in Vista with cs2 and cs3, but no solutions...
    Has this problem been solved?
If so, how do I get that icon back?
    thnx,
    S

    Hi Mylenium,
    Thanks for the response!
Removing and re-adding the link to the taskbar doesn't solve the problem unfortunately...
I don't think it has anything to do with the taskbar, because the icon is also gone (i.e. replaced by an "unknown item" icon) in windows explorer.
There is a .ico file (AI_Application_Icon.ico) in the support files\contents\windows folder that does display the icon, but the illustrator.exe file does not.
Also changing illustrator.exe icon to this .ico file has no effect.
I'm also running illustrator as an administrator with full rights (tried every other way of running it, to no avail...).
What's more, all my other cs4 applications don't have this problem...
I use illustrator all the time, so don't think non usage is the reason either.
    I'm at a loss :'(

  • Application Focus randomly changes

Im about to go nuts... Even as I type this, Lion is doing this crazy thing.
If I have a bunch of windows open, which I always do, the Application focus randomly changes.  To better describe, If I am typing something in the address bar in Safari, it will bring windows from other applications, but the cursor is still in Safari, typing the keys I hit.  I can't see what I am typing because it brings EVERYTHING to the front (Excel, Word, PPT, Skype, SFDC Chatter.. and the 10,000 other apps
I end up having to having to minimize everything to the dock so that I can see what I am typing.. and to keep from pulling my hair out.
This is a hard one to search discussions for, I hope it has been solved!
    Thanks for your help
    Frodo
PS - This happens on my brand new MBP, 2 year old quad core iMac and second gen MBA.

Well, I guess there's the standard troubleshooting stuff to try to see if we can't get a hint....
    Have you tried:
    -  Starting in Safe Mode (hold shift key during startup) and seeing if the behavior persists?
    -  Creating a new user (or using Guest) and seeing if the behavior persists for that user?

A very cautious "yes". It mainly depends on what you expect.
It has always been possible to just export to PDF and post that on your site. You can also export your ID file as one comprehensive SWF file and immediately put that onto the site -- it comes with a few handy browse functions, snazzy page flipping (when required); and it looks exactly like your ID document.
Hard-core techies can use the Export To XHTML/DreamWeaver function, but that will only export the very bare bones -- plain text, with just the commands for text formatting in place. You have to re-do layout and styling in HTML code. Bear in mind ID is designed, top to bottom, as a document layout program, and this export is "extra", not really a basic feature.

  • Application Support folders disappeared

Finder has been hanging recently, causing other apps (and sometimes the whole system) to become unresponsive.  i googled for fixes, and followed a suggestion to reboot into Safe Mode, navigate through a few directories in Finder, then restart normally.  having done this, i now find that Chrome's settings and bookmarks have been wiped and my contacts and calendars have gone AWOL; it seems that most of the subdirectories under ~/Library/Application Support have disappeared, taking my Calendars, Contacts, etc. with them...
i have a Time Machine backup from which i'm about to go and retrieve these folders, but this does not inspire confidence!  what happened?  why did Lion delete all my Application Support folders and how can i prevent this from happening again?
many thanks indeed.  i'm on a 2011 MBP running 10.7.3.

those were as detailed as the instructions in the suggestion i followed:

nothing more complex or precise than that.  i didn't make any further change whilst in Safe Mode.
i'm not sure if it's normal, but whilst waiting for the machine to boot into Safe Mode, there was a progress bar underneath the spinning progress indicator.  it took a good few minutes to boot.
then, when i restarted normally, once again there was the was progress bar underneath the spinning progress indicator, though it completed and booted much faster, and my Login Items opened as normal.  everything appeared to be fine, bar the missing directories.
I still can't figure out why it would want you to go to a few folders in Finder and yet not make at least some subtle change or check the contents of some folder. It seems a very strange 'fix' or even diagnostic test.
As for the progress bar, that sounds like it may well have been loading the latest Firmware update. I would be thinking that your original idea of taking them from your backup drive would definately be your best option at the moment.
    Good Luck
