CS4 Resizing in InDesign to odd %'s

Since I need to resize 4 ads into 27 mostly different sizes ... is there something like there was Resize It (if that is the right name) for Quark ... only for InDesign? So that things size correctly without having to go in and tweek photos and re-move lines and things that move around in diagrams? Thanks. (I do realize that if I take something down to 86% wide by 75% wide, I still have to go in and fix images but is there something out there that makes it easier? Thanks.

Thank you. I know "how" to resize. But since there are so many ads to resize and each one is being done one by one and then going in and adjusting the images and making sure the text is right ... and the diagrams are not resizing correctly = some of the lines are going off to the right or up. It's taken me all day so far to resize 11 so far.
So it's a longggg process. I am wondering if some company came up with a program like Resize It for Quark to speed things up. Thanks. PS.
Yes, each is saved as a new file so that the vendor will get them to the correct newspapers.

  • Saving InDesign CS4 files for InDesign CS2

I'm about to upgrade from CS3 to CS4 but have a client who needs to open documents I create InDesign CS2. I've been saving files for this clients in CS3's interchange (.inx) format, which has worked fine. But CS4 .inx files will only open in CS3. One work around I found was on TUAW (http://www.tuaw.com/2009/05/08/tuaw-tip-saving-indesign-cs4-files-for-indesign-cs2/), which suggests opening the .inx file in a text editor and changing the version number. The resulting file should then open in CS4. I was wondering if anyone has tried this (with or without success) or has any advice on saving CS4 docs for CS2? Thanks very much!

I'll go with option 3 since I no longer have CS2 on my machine and my
client won't be upgrading anytime soon. Thanks for the help and great
    advice.
I'd never use this workflow if I couldn't test it on CS2 before sending it off to the client. Don't know what to tell you here... good luck?
Me, harsh? Is that my rep?
Oh, come on. I can say it another way:
"Peter's going to be way too nice about this... DON'T DO IT."

  • Installing CS4 and keeping InDesign CS3

Can I install CS4 without removing InDesign CS3? I need to keep both on my computer. is there a trick to this? Also, if I decide to remove CS4 later from my computer and move it elsewhere, can I uninstall it without imperilling InDesign CS3?

You can install CS4 and keep CS3. Just remember that IF these are upgrades, you cannot use CS4 and CS3 on different computers simultaneously. They are for the use of a single person. Technically, your upgrade license for CS4 supersedes you license for CS3. You no longer have a license for CS3 anymore. I doubt Adobe objects to you using  CS4 and CS3 on the same computer. You can remove CS4 on a computer and put in on a new machine. A commercial license allows the non-simultaneous use on two computers. You probably can turn on the old computer when you have an occasional job that requires CS3.

  • Image resizing in Indesign - should I or shouldn't I?

I would like to know what the best practice is when Placing an image into an Indesign document and then resizing it (obviously to a smaller size).
Would the results from a graphic/image resized in Indesign be much worse than an image resized in Photoshop before? or would they be the same? Might the results be fine if it is for screen and not if the output is for print?
    Thank you all in advance.

If it is drastic size reduction I always use photoshop. Because you have more control. The ability to do sharpening after if needed. If is only 10% reduction I don't bother. Or if its going on newsprint. You need to use common sense as to know when to do something. If the finished product is a coffee table book I would make everything 100% in Photoshop before placing the file.

  • (CS3) Images resize in InDesign to Photoshop copying

Hi everyone, hopefully you can help me out. I'm running Adobe Photoshop and InDesign CS3 on my Mac, and it's been working fine before - even this morning. Basically, I have images in InDesign with exact dimensions that I'm copying to Photoshop to work something out. This never happened before and it always worked fine, but now when I copy from InDesign to Photoshop the image sizes have sometimes increased fourfold.
For example, if I copy a 166x93 px image from InDesign into Photoshop, it comes up at 692x388 - before, it would copy at the same 166x93 size. Does anyone know why this is happening? The reason I ask is because not only is it annoying and I want to fix it for future ease-of-use, but I am trying to get some images into a specific size, but increasing them to the size the canvas is creating makes them bad quality. I know you can resize them smaller, but (and it's hard to explain) this isn't going to work for what I'm trying to achieve.
    Thanks a lot for reading.

I would believe your last statement if I were working on a Mac. I don't give Windows machines that level of sophistication.
The only thing this HP is telling me is that it can't remember what I'm doing.
If something works once, it should work every time. If I copy something, it should be there when I paste it.
I'm not individually resizing my images, that's the whole point of the copy and paste thing that I'm doing.
I'm also not simply releasing the files to prepress.
I take the images which are assembled roughly into Indesign layouts by our designers as oversized high resolution package shots.
I copy them out, paste them into Photoshop and then layer and drop shadow them before placing them back into Indesign as flattened EPS files at 100%.
Seems like a RAM/hardware issue to me. Was just wondering if maybe someone else had run into this and come up with a solution.
Coming in here and having people tell me that copying and pasting is abnormal seems a bit odd and has me wondering what I could do differently.
Writing the Indesign file to a PDF is not a solution to my problem.
I'm aware that I can save the Indesign pages out as an EPS or PDF or simply edit the original file, but as I said before, that adds many steps to the process.
Anyway, thanks for your help Marian. I guess I'll dig around the forums some more.

  • Tabloid duplex printing problem from CS4 (Acrobat and InDesign)

I cannot print a two-page tabloid (landscape mode) pdf document properly from a MacBook Pro or a Mac Pro running 10.6.2 using Adobe Products (Acrobat 8 or 9, or InDesign CS3 or CS4) to an HP LJ5550DN. The printed version prints on both sides of the paper, but the right 1/4 of each page doesn't print. Furthermore, if I reboot and print just one side, it prints fine, but when I select duplex I get this problem and if I try to print just one side again, it prints w/o the 1/4 of the right side of the paper.
I can print the tabloid duplex correctly using Preview on the same computers. I can also print correctly using Acrobat 7 from a Mac G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11. I can print a single tabloid sheet correctly from Illustrator CS3 or CS4 from the Snow Leopard computers, but since Illustrator doesn't handle more than one page, can't send it duplex.
I conclude that the problem is the Adobe software under Snow Leopard. If you know what is wrong with the Adobe software, please send me the fix - it would streamline the process.

I'm having exactly the same problem, with a 5500dn. As with you, the problem is present in both CS3 and Acrobat 8 and 9, and I can print a duplex A3/tabloid PDF correctly with Preview. (only the colour balance is rubbish!)
Mac OS 10.6.2, print driver HP Color Laserjet 5500 v3010.107 (although it's obviously not the driver).
Needless to say, any solution to this needs to address CS3 and later apps.
    Bug report filed.
    Thanks,

  • CS4, ERROR 5, InDesign, Mac OSX 10.9.3 Fix?

I apologize if this was posted before. I don't have time (busy mom) to read a thousand forums, 99% of which have no resolution. Just wonder if anyone can fix the issue: ERROR 5, all other programs will open except InDesign.
Hard drive was wiped clean. Reinstalled CS4 and now this one won't open.
Live chat was no help, matter of fact he sent me to a link that basically trashed Adobe support techs and said they still had no answer after holding for hours. Pretty ironic.
I'm sure this must be simple. Thank you so much for any help in advance.

CS4 is not supported on OS 10.9.x, so you're mostly on your own. If that's an installer error rather than a document error, I recall a thread that discussed it a year or two ago. I think Matthew Laun had an actual answer at the time, though it may not be relevant in the new OS. Google searches work better than the forum search, so look for InDesign "error code 5" Laun.

  • Opening cs4 docs in indesign 2.0

    Hi,
at work i am using indesign 2.0 but at home i use cs4. is there anyway to save cs4 docs so they can be viewed using 2.0?

    >is there anyway to save cs4 docs so they can be

Export PDF, place PDF into InDesign 2.0 file. Now the file can be viewed. If you want the file to be editable (not your initial request), see Robin's answer.

  • How can one resize a inDesign Document Window without moving Document's position?

I've searched high and low for an answer to this habit that inDesign has. Am I the only one that finds this annoying?
You go to adjust the size of your document window to move it out of the way to get to something else on your desktop, and instead of keeping the document in place and just resizing the window, it moves the document with the resize. Not sure if I'm putting this in a way that people can understand me. Say I have two inDesign files open side by side and I zoom in on an area and adjust my view of the page. Then I go to the other inDesign document and adjust the view by grabbing the bottom right hand corner of the window and moving it to where I want it. The whole document then moves with it! I desire it not to, so now I have to waste time by using the hand tool to move it back into place. Illustrator doesn't act like this. Photoshop doesn't act like this. Only inDesign. Does this harken back to the PageMaker days? Am I missing a preference somewhere I need to change? Or is it just the way of things and I'm stuck with it?
Currently using inDesign CS5 and CS6 on a Mac in OS 10.6.8

    Hi,
The simplest would be to set the application preferences in the script.
    Like this :
    -- *** set prefs ****
    tell application "AppleWorks 6"
          activate
          set oldPrefs to its preferences
          copy oldPrefs to tPrefs
          tell tPrefs
set old version warning to false --doesn't show the old version warning alert
set converted file suffix to true -- append “[v6.0]” to documents converted from older formats
set locked file warning to false
set paint reduction warning to false
          end tell
          set preferences to tPrefs
    end tell
    -- *** end set prefs ****
    --**** your script, example ***
set tfiles to choose file with multiple selections allowed
    tell application "AppleWorks 6"
          repeat with i in tfiles
                open i
                tell front document
                      -- do something
                end tell
          end repeat
    end tell
    --**** end  your script ***
    -- *** reset prefs ****
tell application "AppleWorks 6" to set preferences to oldPrefs

  • My Fonts change when opening an InDesign CS4 file with InDesign CS6

I've been experiencing strange behaviour when opening a InDesign CS4 file file with InDesign CS6: the kerning and spacing is all off:
    Original file:
    opened in InDesign CS6:
Is this a conversion error? Is there a setting/pref I've got wrong?

It's more than a year ago since this issue was reported, but at this time I'd had the same problem when opening a CS4 document in CS6/CC.
I was amazed that a header, placed in capitals, looked different in CS6/CC. But at last, after several tests, i've came to the conclusion that "forced" capitals behaving different than "real" capitals. In others words: when you forcing text to capitals the kerning would be different in CS6/CC. When you place text in real capitals (Shift + text) the kerning is the same as in both InDesign versions.
    Text in CS4:
As you can see: in CS4 there's no difference between real capitals en forced capitals.
Below the results when opening the CS4 file in CS6/CC:
I'm not sure if there are still people struggling with this problem, but hopefully was is this helpful.

  • Problem in integrating FlexUIStroke sample in CS4 SDK with Indesign CS6

    Hi all,
I want to add a flex panel to the adobe indesigner using a indesigner plugin. For that I used the FlexUIStroke sample project  in the CS4 product SDK. But I have adobe indesigner CS6. I successfully built the FlexUIStroke project and created a plugin file and added to the indesign plugin folder. But when I try to start the indesign it display error message that the plugin is not a valid plugin. I need to know what can be the cause of the message. If that approch doesn't work what are the alternative approaches that I can take to integrate a flex panel to the indesigner using a indesigner plugin?
    Thank You.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Unfortunately the form still returns the 'no matches found for [email protected]' I've changed the URL field on the submit button to mailto: xxxxx@xxxx and I've also tried it with no space after the mailto:, unfortunately both these return the above error message. This is the same whatever email address I try. I'm starting to tear my hair out with this one. I've tried it on my home PC arunning Norton Internet Security and on my works PC running Avast. Same problem on both.

  • Why does CS6 quit when opening CS4 docs in InDesign?

We just downloaded InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat and Photoshop in Creative Cloud. But when opening InDesign docs made in CS4 the CS6 version immediately crashes. But when reopening the document is there, but nonamed and not with all links remained. Common problem?

Do you have a crash report? If so, please post it on pastebin.com and put a link here.
Do you have a font manager? If so, which one and what version? I think I remember similar reports tied to auto-activation plugins, but I'm not certain, and the crash report, if you have one, will be a lot more useful than speculation to start.

  • Document Resizing question - InDesign CC

In previous versions of InDesign that I've used, if I had something centered on a 12" x 18" page (so centered at 6" x 9"), I could decide to change the document setup size to a different sized paper, for example 13" x 19".  When I would do that, it would basically add 1/2" to all 4 sides evenly and my art would remain centered with a new point of 6.5" x 9.5".  When I do this in InDesign CC, my artwork stays at the 6" x 9" and is no longer centered.  Is there a preference setting or something I can do to fix this and make it add or subtract my new page size evenly to keep my art centerd??
    I'm using a Mac, OS X 10.6.8.
    Thanks in advance!

A discussion like this had been posted before, and as I do research, I also found out that some Adobe InDesign users is already aware of this. A related topic for this one is here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5445588#5445588
    And other website:
    http://idsecrets.wpengine.com/resize-page-from-upper-left-corner.php
So, lets just hope that adobe include a fix for this since adobe is already working out an enhancement since InDesign CC is also sluggish compare to adobe InDesign CS6.

  • Opening InDesign CS4 Files in InDesign CS2?

This is a long-shot, but does anyone know if it is possible to open files created or modified in the current version of InDesign in the much older CS2 version of the application? The files need to be fully editable in InDesign CS2.
    Alex Drinkwater

    Keep in mind, though, that
    1) Three versions are involved here. The CS4 user needs CS3 so he/she can save to INX twice.
    2) Usages of features available in CS4 and CS3 but not available in CS2 will come out fairly well messed up once you get the file into CS2.
    3) Line wrap in CS2 will not match line wrap in CS4 or CS3 exactly. Adobe has tweaked the H&J engine through both upgrades.
Don't count on roundtripping your document without a lot of work. If you need to roundtrip, you're going to be better off either upgrading to CS4 or keeping the document in one version or the other and marking corrections through PDF.

  • Resizing an indesign file to export a smaller pdf

Please help! I have created a 120 page catologue in indesign. There are numerous photos linked to the file and the file is huge. I'm trying to export a pdf small enough to download off of a website. Right now the pdf is taking too long to download off the website, therefore I have to decrease the size of the file. Besides decreasing the size of individual photos and re-exporting a pdf, is there a quick fix here? I have tried resizing the catalogue to make it a few inches smaller but this makes the page smaller and not the content. Just want to know if there's a simple solution before I have to spend hours on this. Thanks.

Decreasing the size of the photos in inches will not help and will just waste a lot of time. You need to export the file with fewer pixels in the photos and more compression. Try lowering the resolution in the Compression panel when you export the PDF and trying different compression settings. Be sure to lower the “for images above” setting, too.
But a 120 page catalogue with photos will never be all that small without making the photos look like a close up of a Lego model. This might be an impossible request. If your job is to make this file smaller than a certain size, let us know that size.
