CS5.5 & CS6 Spot to CMYK conversion not matching Pantone + Guide book

Hey,
I have both cs5.5 & cs6 indesign both of which are giving me different values of cmyk compared against the Pantone + guide, eg if I select pms 173C and convert to cmyk the values are not correct when I check the values in the book is there a way to fix this, other wise it will be highly annoying to have to manually put in the cmyk values for each job when matching spot colours for digital prints. Any help /suggestions or if there is any settings to change?
Cheers.
Jack.

In CS6 the Pantone solid libraries are always defined as Lab—as far as I can tell the Ink Manager's Use Standard Lab Values no longer has any effect.
So these libraries are now  defined as Spot colors with Lab definitons–if you convert the spots to process via Ink Manager your document's CMYK profile makes a color managed conversion:
If for some reason you want a predefined CMYK mix (but for what press or device?) there is Color Bridge Coated and Uncoated—those colors are defined as process CMYK. So you could delete PANTONE 173 C and replace it with Color Bridge Coated PANTONE 173 CP.

  • Spot-to-CMYK conversion: Pantone vs. ID

I know this is not a new issue, and was discussed here, but more from the point of view of the visual aspect of colors on one's screen.
I'm baffled as to the conversion of spot colors for printing purposes (sheet-fed).... My client wants me to use PMS 322c in a CMYK job, and she's been always very picky about colors and the way they print.  The difference in the conversion formulas between ID and using Pantone's website -- is striking.... See how ID has a significant amount of M, yet low K, while Panton suggests ZERO M and lots of K.... So I'm asking, WHO CAN I TRUST???....

Part of the “problem” is that of how you actually represent the Pantone spot colors. Yes, Pantone provide CMYK equivalent values, but in exactly what CMYK color space? According to what I have been told by Pantone, those CMYK values are nominally SWOP.
You didn't indicate what your full workflow looks like, but the most reliable method of dealing with spot colors, whether used as real spot colors (i.e., you actually have those spot color inks at the press) or you are simulating them, is to pass through the spot color information in the PDF file exported from InDesign or at least as LAB colors otherwise. Preferably, you are using a PDF/X-4 workflow.
Bring in the swatch at follows:
The swatch will then look like:
When you export PDF, you have two choices. If you are actually printing spot color or if you don't know whether real spot color inks are available, set the Ink Manager as follows:
In this case, the RIP will use the spot color if available or if not, it will convert Pantone's more precise LAB color values specified as the “alternate color space” to the press' CMYK color space.
If you know that the press definitely won't have the spot colors, set the Ink Manager as follows:
On PDF export, all references to PANTONE 322 C will be output to the PDF with the exact LAB color values which your RIP will convert to CMYK and no references to the spot color at all.
This is the method getting precisely what Pantone defines for the spot colors and how they will look in process color.
Note that many Pantone spot colors cannot precisely be matched in process color simply because such colors are outside the gamut of whatever process CMYK color space your printing workflow supports.

  • PMS swatch converted to CMYK does not match colour values of Pantone Colour Book

I am working in Adobe Illustrator CS6 and InDesign CS6.
When I create a swatch using Pantone colour books (solid coated) and then convert the swatch to CMYK the values differ between programs and also differ to my hard copy of Pantone Colour Bridge.
I have followed the Workaround 1 on http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/pantone-plus.html#main-pars_text_11 which was helpful - now the CMYK values produced in Illustrator and InDesign match HOWEVER they still differ from my hard copy of Pantone Colour Bridge.
I copied the leagacy files from CS4 - is it possible the CMYK values embedded in these files are out of date or is it possible that the CMYK values in the Colour Bridge book have since changed?

Pantone has updated their CMYK match values for PMS colors over time, and so has Adobe.  Adobe and pantone have their own values or matches, so they have never matched.
The values between CS6 Illustrator and InDesign should have matched (atleast the files are named exactly the same), so not sure going back to CS4 swatches wasa a good move for you, unless you have a load of older files you are trying to match.
The biggest differences between updates to the swatch colors you will see in tradeoffs between CMY & K.
If you want your CMYK matches for PMS colors to match your bridge book, you may have to manually make a color book .ase file yourself, or try downloading the pantone color manager. Pantone has made this a complicated, multistep process relying on registering a product. Pantone has a history of failed digital products, and using bait & swtich tactics, so do not trust anything they have to offer anymore, but they were in the right place at the right time and exist as the standard for spot color in the US & some other countries.

I would like to have one contacts file that synchronizes with outlook. How do I make the contacts file on my iphone synchronize with the icloud then with outlook?

Nuts isn't it. This seems to have been an issue snce dAY 1.  iT FROSTS ME THAT THERE IS NO SIMPLE QUICK WAY TO UPDATE OR CORRECT the data in both programs simultaneously.. Thats why i decided to just put everytning into the i cloud address brook, and let the one other sit and rot.
then i got smart and said, why don't I delete the outlookaddress book files. and save on confusion.
result - both addresses books  and their contents became invisible to outlook.!!!!!! and I can find no way to correct this...to go back to the imperfect world that was.
I did get the outlook contact s back from an archive - but any thing from icloud has become inaccessible from outlook.  (fortunately i can get the vcard infformation directly from icloud. but I can't access it from outlook mail.... means no replying, forwarding etc - and a time swallowing nuisance..

  • Oversaturated prints not matching Pantone swatch

Head is melting with this HP lazerjet 2550L. Nothing prints as it should or matches Pantone swatches. All my prints are way too intense in colour but the odd thing is that my monitor matches exactly the pantones in the swatch booklet (which is new, not faded). Strangely enough, i have had some test prints done from a repro place and they the colour is the same as my printer! Can't figure out whats goin' on. ANY advice would be great, before i chuck it out the window. Thanks in advance.

Just because the monitor colours are close doesn't mean it is calibrated. I often find it is due to more good luck than proper CMS.
But more importantly when was the printer last calibrated? Does it use an internal visual cal or have you used a densitometer/spectro? And is the printer Pantone certified? A lot of colour LBP's struggle to get anywhere near the output of those ink-based swatches.

  • 0BBP_TD_SC_1 Header GUID in item record does not match Header GUID

    Hi all,
We are testing shopping cart (Line Item) extractor (0BBP_TD_SC_1) and we are finding that for some shopping carts, the Header GUID in the item record does not match GUID in the header record.
The item record, however, has a field called 'DOC GUID' which matches the header GUID.
Also, Header and Item GUID in the item record are identical.
Is this how the extractor is supposed to work?
Any suggestions will be appreciated, and points will be assigned.

  • Pantone conversions to cmyk don't match pantone color bridge

We are having issues at our plant with adobe not converting colors properly. Program using to send to our rip for a di press is Indesign cs6, tried cs5.5 and get the same values.
Example pantone color is 293. We have the latest pantone + bridge and the color break down is 100c 69m 0y 4k but if you let adobe made all spots to process we get a value of 100c 80m 12y 3k.
Any idea what is causing the incorrect values or what I can update to use the correct values?
    Thanks.

    HI,
In order to get the best CMYK values from InDesign, set your CMYK working space (color settings or Assign ICC to your document) to your DI Press ICC profile.
This way, InDesign will convert from Pantone’s Lab valur to the presse ICC profile’s CMYK values.
CMYK numbers from Color Bridge + are made for european TVI (ISO standard), which is lower that North American standards.
    Hope this help!

  • ADOBE CYMK equivalent to Pantone chip does not match Pantone's numbers

Pantone assigns equivalent CMYK numbers to each of their spot color chips. And writes the CMYK numbers by their PMS spot color chip.
AI conversion within AI's dialogue box, not even close, when Adobe assigns the CMYK to a PMS.
Test it, so you see how far off this is:
    PMS book has CMYK at C:0.0, M:6.0, Y:15.0, K:6.0
plenty more where that came from...
Yet Adobe offers their conversion function as a reliable tool? What is the fix for this?

Thanks John, here's what I'm getting on PMS 5777C:
CS6, Swatch Libraries > Color Books > Pantone & Solid Coated with conversion in that dialog box to CMYK: 0C, 31.76M,  100Y, 0K
CS6, Swatch Libraries > Color Books > Pantone & Color Bridge Coated with conversion in that dialog box to CMYK: 26C, 9M, 56Y, 20K
    Your PMS book: Solid C ( 10C, 0M, 49Y, 28K
My PMS book, not a big deal off to your PMS book: Solid C 8.5C, 0.0M, 47.0Y, 27.5K

    K70
    The PMS book conversion is
    C100

    Thanks!

If you take a look at a Pantone "Solid-to-Process" swatch book, very few, if any CMYKs match their Spot counterparts. There are some that come close. In Pantone's defense, there has to be some standards and they've done a good job standardizing something so objective as color. I've been involved with some fairly radical printing devices where I had to match Pantone Spot color using CMYK and in all cases I had to build custom CMYKs, as well as standard equivalents for comparison due to the limitations of the combination of print device + media substrate deviates, + atmospheric conditions ( i.e., temp, humidity, etc. ).
That said, all of the custom builds were compared to the Pantone Spot color swatch. That is the standard, "Known" factor in the process. We had a customer who specified a given Pantone Spot color and it was my job to match that color using the limitations of the CMYK printing process in my given workflow. The customer did not say, hmmm, how about a warm medium red? No that would be too arbitrary. They specified a specific Pantone Spot color number.
Chris, I'm not sure what you mean by "appearance"? And what do you mean by "wrong" color? We can agree that there are some CMYKs that do not match their Pantone Spot color swatch, but they've shown you what to expect using the process color equivalents in a CMYK offset printing process. Those are industry standards that most press operators use on a daily basis, but they themselves have to deal with different stock colors, whereas the white paper they are using probably isn't the same white color used in the swatch book. To assume it is would be totally unrealistic. Does a different white paper's "Brightness" affect the color? Absolutely. It's just another variable in the process. Does a 2002 Heidelberg print the same way as a 2009 GTO Heidelberg? I doubt it.

  • Colors pantone book do not match with screen?

    Hello,
I am having a problem with matching the colors in my Pantone book with the colors on my screen. My screen is calibrated with the colormunki display. The adobe suite is synchronized and I use fogra39 as my working space.
I have looked up a color in my Pantone+ uncoated guide: a deep dark red (1797c). However, when selecting the swatch in illustrator it shows up as a pinkish red. It does not match the color book at all!
Also, the cmyk values of this swatch are entirely different than what is is in the guide.
Can anyone tell me what the problem is?
Ps. I have overprint view on and use lab colors to show spot colors. My monitor is normal gamut, but I can reproduce the color with my own cmyk mix. So my monitor can reproduce the color.
On my iPad (Pantone app) and in de Pantone manager I also see this pinkish red color, which does not match the color in the book...
    Thanks!

There is one point which nobody have made mention of, which also is something anyone who works in print should know about.
The first thing to know is that there are some Green and Red Pantones that are IMPOSSIBLE to reproduce on screen because of the limitation of the RGB gamut. (The RGB of screens can only reproduce a bit more than 60% of the real-life colors and around 50% of the Pantone are situated inside the remaining missing 40%. Almost EVERY Pantone, on your charts, that are situation on the 2 top and 2 bottom positions are not reproducible on screen.)
So, it's always normal that some Pantone never look the same between a screen and the Pantone chart even if the screen is calibrated in the best ways and that is why you uses a Pantone chart. The Pantone chart isn't just a "decision" tool, but also a "preview" tool so that you can see the exact final color regardless of what's on screen.
If that is not working with your workflow, then it simply means that your workflow is flawed as it's how it has been made to be. It's not a choice, but a limitation of physics with computer hardware which you have to live with as a professional.

  • Beginner Website Tutorials do not match CS5.5 or CS6. Why?

It is impossible to get through the basic tutorials provided to show how to create a website, etc. Has anyone actually tried it? The information does not match current Dreamweaver CS6 or even earlier Dreamweaver CS5.5, at least on the Mac software version. I have done many websites but wanted to get a fresh perspective and see if I missed anything, and if I could pick up some new details given the major changes that have been happening with responsive web design. Please update. If there is a better or more accurate tutorial, please provide it. Sending people to what I found is a sure way to discourage people.

Hi John. I guess I stayed up way too late. I believe I am getting to the root of the problem and it is surely due to my own ignorance. Even though I had just recently installed CS6, and even more recently installed some third party extensions extensions using their CC install versions, I should have installed CS versions. The instructions sent me to some basic CC tutorials which did not match what I was seeing.

Now, I have to figure out what I need to do, must do, etc. Any suggestions are welcome. Since the interface appears to be so different for HTML5 at least (which is what I need to be learning and using, apparently), should I make the change to CC and if so, how best should this be done and why are the advantages?

  • Photoshop CS6 - Spot channels are not saved correctly in the psd files.

    Hi,
I'm using Photoshop CS6 and something happent a few days ago....some Windows or Adobe update messed up everything...I don't know...
    Here's how things are.
If I add to an image a couple of new spot channels (any Pantone color) and remove the informations from the CMYK channels (or not-the problem it's there anyway), I should have an image with 6 color plates (CMYK and the 2 Pantone). It doesn't happened anymore...
I'm using Corel to print the files and the previous saved files are fine, I have all the Spot colors there. Now, If I edit any file I've worked on before, and save it again, the spot colors dissapear when I'm importing the psd file in my Corel document. And if there is no information on the CMYK channels, I'm getting a blank image...
I hope someone will give me some ideas because I don't know what to do anymore...
    Codrut

Right. It's not reading these new saved files correctly. The old ones are fine.
I forgot to mention one thing. I've got this CS6 as an upgrade and I still have the CS5 one running on the same computer. The CS5 version does the same thing...
Today I tryed again to open a PSD (CS6) with another CS5 version from another computer and came with an error message "Could not complete your request because the specified color book cannot be found". And the file didn't opened....
Who messed up my color book and how can I fix it?

  • In AE CS6, the sound does not match with video

    Hi,
I would like to ask a question. I have AE CS6, and I recorded a gameplay video with Avermedia Live Gamer HD. The format of this video is .mp4. When I import the .mp4 into the program, the sound does not match. On the original video, when i play with VLC or WMP, all things are good, and when i import, the sound does not good. What causes this problem, and can I do something to solve this?
    Thanks the answers, R3dLinE

Check your footage interpretation, split the audio in an external program, convert the sample rate and import it separately or whatever. Most likely you simply have used unsuitable recording settings with odd sample and data rates.

  • CS5 The selected file cannot be linked because its type (audio) does not match the original file's t

    Greetings,
I have been working on a very large project using CS5 on my desktop computer. Now I am on the road and bought a laptop so that I can continue to work. I placed all of my assets on a back-up external 2tb drive (which I was able to open without incident on my desktop). I installed CS5 on my new laptop and now when I try to open the project I get the following message "The selected file cannot be linked because its type (audio) does not match the original file's type (audio and video)". This message appears before I indicate the path to any of the assets. Then, when I do indicate the path to each asset, I get the same message for individual files.
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jeremy

I had this problem and have found a solution / workaround:  my issue was when trying to open a cs5 project that had been collected on mac and then transfered to pc, my footage was all png image sequences but this will hopefully work in other situations...
Open the project and cancel the first dialogue box that pops up where you get the "file cannot be linked" error when trying to reconnect footage.  The project will open and then in the project panel, right click on any footage that needs reconnected and choose "Replace footage..." this will open a dialog that will allow you to select the file that gave you the error in the first place without any issues.  Any sequences with that footage will now work and everything show be all good.
You may experience "Offline material is present in this export and will be encoded using the offline media graphic" on first export but apparently you can just ingore that, but i guess it's woth testing a few short sections before commiting to a huge render...
This workaround isn't perfect as i had about 50 pieces of footage i had to relink via this method one by one but at least it saved redoing the edit which was critical for my project...
    good luck!

  • How do I set up CS5.5 educator edition pack when instructions do not match info on my CS5.5 package?

How do I set up CS5.5 educator edition pack when instructions do not match info on my CS5.5 package?

I have a 22-space alphanumeric product code for my Adobe creative suite 5.5 web premium package.
It does not have the 24-space alphanumeric code that is the product code sequence asked for when signing up for adobe procuct code approval.  Adobe keeps asking for a correct code and I only have the one they gave me in the package, called a product code, but adobe keeps rejecting it.
Also, the program never loads correctly - it says this at the end of the 45-minute loading from the disc.  That is getting awfully tiresome as well.  I have everything closed as they request, and do not know how to turn off the virus protection which is windows defender.
Also, mine is a new teacher edition, and when I go to the page for getting my approval, it will not open that page.  I have used Adobe products before with typical annoying hassle but always eventual success.  So this really is perturbing.
