CS5 Multiple page sizes leaves a gap between pages on a spread

I'm laying out a 6pp DL leaflet.
I've set up page 1 as 97mm wide, pages 2 & 3 as 100mm wide. This is the usual way to set up a 6pp DL, only before CS 5 you would have to do it the long way round.
Only it seems when you have different page sizes in a spread it leaves a gap between the pages when there is an alternative page size, rather than butting the pages together.
How can I get rid of the gap between pages in order to print it as spreads?

I just completed a job that has six pages of varying widths in one spread. Trying to drag the pages into place just doesn't work. You have to use the Control Panel. Select the pages (with the Page Tool) and make sure the X co-ordinate for the top left matches the width of the adjacent page. After two pages, you have to do the math, or move your rulers to the next page.
I don't know what you were doing, but Steve's method works perfectly for me. As long as shuffling is disallowed on a spread the pages will not separate. In fact, I've not found a way to create a gap between pages that are joined as a spread, even two page spreads for which shuffling is allowed, so perhaps I don't understand the question at all.

  • Gap between pages

I have a document with pages on spreads. I want to have a gap between the pages. It is for a set of cards and I need some space around it for the bleed. I found out I have to use the page tool for this. However the x value is greyed out so I'm not able to adjust this. How can I fix this?
    TIA

Another suggestion: don't use spreads for your document.
Then create a new innd document with facing pages and import your PDF into them. So you can preview your work.
Another trick would be to set up your master page like with 3 facing pages.
Select the inside page in the Master page panel, and set up a personalized size (at least twice the value of the bleed).
This is definitely not a very orthodox way and you might encounter difficulties when creating 3 new pages:
if you allow redistribution, only 2 pages will face, if you don't, they'll face the previous ones...
Drag and drop all 3 together will do the trick.
InDesign Help | Managing pages and spreads
OR create 3 different masters, one for front, one for back, one for gap (with smaller width). Better way if you need different master for Front and Back cards.
Both ways: main problem will be exporting: you'll need to be careful not to export the "gap" pages... That will be a hassle.
Anyhow, it's a trick, not a solution really...
Edit : while I was writing all this, many suggestions have been sent... better than mine (I could delete it but I just leave for information purpose)
However please note you might also encounter difficulties:
Peter's old school solution is fine but, your printer might not like "artificial" crop marks. If you use this solution, make sure his imposition software don't make a mess...
Winterm's one is just what you were looking for I guess. I just hope you don't have 2 x 500 cards to create otherwise, it will take long time to set up every set of cards..
Sorry I didn't understand Ellis' answer...

  • Page size printing problems with custom page size I created

I have created a custom page size (very small) for printing an advertise I had to print, and now after that operation all the pages I ask to print to any printer are automatically printed in that setup, and sometimes even if I change to A4 manually, the page changes but the borders of the page still remain the old one (result i can not print). Help?

Actually, I have to disagree with you, Peter, about the Page tool.
While I agree that it can be confusing to newcomers (as many of InDesign's tools are), it has great utility in printing. Two example are creating gatefolds or book covers. I wrote a blog post about this: http://indesignsecrets.com/introducing-multiple-page-sizes-in-indesign-cs5.php
You can also create a nice presentation of an identity package using multiple page sizes with this feature: http://indesignsecrets.com/creating-multiple-page-sizes-in-cs5—part-2.php
In the print dialog box, there a new widget for selecting all pages of the same size, if you're printing directly from the document. And creating a PDF is easy because PDF files have always supported multiple sizes and orientations.
As usual, your commercial printer will have to get up-to-speed on new techniques, and you should communicate with them ahead of printing time.

  • Is it possible to have multiple page sizes and print types in the same pdf?

Is it really possible to have a pdf which has multiple pages and each of them have pages which are of different page sizes (e.g. letter, A4, A3) and print types (e.g. Simplex, Duplex)???
    Thanks,

you can definately do different page sizes by using different master pages. You can set the paper type for each master page in the object>master page palette.

  • Acrobat 9.5 Pro now FAILS to detect page size differences if the Trim Box is set

Previous versions of Acrobat and even of Acrobat 9.x would flag pages whose "size or orientation is different" if the actual media box size was different from page to page. However, it seems that 9.5 now will not flag a document that has pages without a trim box whose media box matches pages with a trim box that are larger.
This is completely counter-intuitive, as these pages would print at different sizes. Not all devices use the trim box setting in a PDF.
Can someone explain what changed in Acrobat between then and now and if there is a way to change it back?
    Thank you.

    1) Opened PDF where most of the pages have all page boxes set to zero, with media box (true page size) set to 6" x 9". One subset of pages has a media box of 6.25" x 9.25", but the trim box is set to 0.125" on all sides.
    2) Ran a preflight profile with the option "Page size or orientation differs from page to page" set to "Error", as it has been on all previous versions of Acrobat.
    3) "Page size or orientation differs from page to page" error does not get triggered.
    4) Tried same preflight profile settings on same PDF in Acrobat 7. Error does get triggered.
    5) Tried same preflight profile settings on same PDF on a copy of Acrobat 9 not fully updated to 9.5. Error does get triggered.
    6) Tried on various machines with 9.5 update. Error does not get triggered on any.
I can only conclude that something has changed in the latest update.

  • How do I standardize page size in a document with different sizes?

Hopefully this will be an easy question for those of you with more Adobe knowledge than me.  I have a document that someone scanned in with multiple diffent page sizes.  All orientation is portrait, but some are large and others are small.  I find this very distracting when I am trying to flip through it or read.  Is there a way to make all the pages the same size?  Thanks in advance.
    Maxx

If you have Acrobat, you can try the crop tool. You can use the it to create custom page sizes for all of the pages at once.

  • Can I change the dashed line between pages in 2up Display mode?

Did anyone ever figure out an answer to this query: Remove dashed page lines in two up mode?
Or did it get fixed or modifiable in a later version?
I'm viewing a pdf in two-up mode and I hate the dashed line Acrobat uses to indicate the gutter line between pages.
I don't want to export as spreads from the indd doc because it ruins pagination.
I wouldn't mind changing it to a solid hairline. the dashes are really distracting.
I don't like Showing Gaps between pages either.
Anyone have a way to modify that dividing line in regular two-up mode?
    Thanks.

Is there a way to change this?
    No.

  • Dashed line between pages

Is it possible to avoid the dashed line between pages when "Show Gaps Between Pages" is unchecked? In other words is it possible to have the 2 pages join seamlessly, no gaps, no dashed lines?

"I would like to export the document to PDF using the spreads option, so that the spreads are combined into 1 page.
However, is there a way for the PDF to recognise the page numbers originally specified in InDesign?"
When you combine pages in a spread you make one page in Acrobat. I can't see how you would expect Acrobat to see this as
    two pages.

  • Same content, two books each with its own page size -- best way to manage?

Does anyone have any suggestions for producing two FrameMaker books that:
Contain identical content that must also be periodically updated
Must be delivered as two separate PDF books, each book having a different page size
I'm familiar with migrating FrameMaker content from one page size to another: Create a new chapter template of the desired size, then import styles, etc., and content into that new template.
But IF one must deliver the same content in two different books, AND each book using a different page size (U.S. Letter and B5), AND the content is periodically updated and maintained, THEN what's the best way to manage that same content, two different page-sizes delivery problem?
PDFs are generated from FrameMaker 7 or 8 (we have both) via Adobe Distiller 9.
Cheers & thanks for your help,
    Riley

Use three directories - one for the master FM document, and one "build" directory for each of the formats you need. When it's time to build, copy all the files into the relevant build directory and do your stylesheet applying, book regenerating, and printing in the build directory.
If you decide to handle it in FrameMaker (rather than Acrobat), then use two stylesheets - one with all the formats you need and letter-sized pages, and one with no formats and with B5 sized pages. This way you only need to manage one stylesheet for most formatting controls (except page layouts), and you only need to import the page layouts when you want to build a document or "toggle" it between different page sizes. How similar these two stylesheets are to each other (on the master pages) depends on how much you think you can get away with:
If the page sizes are similar, use different pages sizes but identical text frames on the master pages if you can. This would give you identical pagination although the margins would be different. You might be able to find an optimum "compromise" text frame size that fits both page sizes reasonably well.
If you can't use the same text frame sizes on the master pages, then of course your pagination is going to change, but at least try to use text frames that are the same WIDTH. This avoids needing to manually adjust side-head areas, pictures, and table widths every time you change the page size.
