Damaged iTunes library on resart

Helloowa!
I recently upgraded iTunes to version 7.0. On this computer, it works fine, however, on my other main computer something odd happens...
When I restart the computer the library becomes damaged. It has never done this with previous versions, however I reverted to 6.- to see if that would work but the same problem occurs.
It's very odd and a little bit annoying as I have to rebuild my library every time I turn on my computer! HAHA! My amazing dancing has to wait an extra 20 minutes before it's unleashed!
I have tried making a backup directory of the library before restarting. I then replaced the damaged library with the supposedly undamaged backup files, however they do nothing!!
Any tips would be most welcome!
Cheers,
David Brent.

Are you using an external drive and getting the
problem after a restarting Windows like the original
poster?
No ... but at one time on this computer I was using a second internal hard drive to store the music folder. I have gone back to iTunes "default" settings in hopes that would solve the problem, to no avail.
I have suspected that there is some lingering file/registry entry somewhere that is causing this problem.
In addition, I also run a batch file to copy/bu the entire "My Music" directory automatically every night.
I have considered that the copying process (xcopy with flags) might be flipping some archive bits, but I have not been able to isolate that either.
I ran setup/repair yesterday again, "imported" from a copy of a previous xml file, rebooted on command, and all is working at the present time for the past 24 hours.
That said, it will probably not be true tomorrow, maybe this afternoon, or maybe in the next twenty minutes ... who knows?
I will do a reboot at some point today when I get the time, just to see if that causes the dreaded "importing iTunes Library" screen, followed by the "invalid library file", followed by no songs/playlists.
This is getting tedious ... I've been using iTunes for a few years now and I am of the distinct opinion that Apple has gotten a little too clever/fancy for their Windows programming ability with 7.xx and have shot themselves in the foot with a lot of unneeded bells and whistles.
I am not a newbie, I am a past Win32 programmer myself, and have been using computers for longer than most iTunes users could spell the word.
Just my .02 ... but this latest fancy pants version has cost me a lot more than that in time spent trying to make it work!
Then again, it is FREE!
I am sure that I know the answer, but is there any third party software that will work with the iTunes library?
That's what I thought!
I suppose one could just purchase tunes with the current no songs/playlist version 7.x, and copy them into a 3rd party library ... but what a pain!

  • Damaged Itunes Library

I have read many posts about solving the "damaged Itunes Library" problem and none of the solutions works for me. My Itunes Library is located in the correct position, I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled Itunes and still, several times a week I get the damaged Itunes Library message and I have to re-import all of my music and recreate my playlists--this takes several hours each time.
A little about my setup. All of my music resides on a seperate internal hard drive--the F drive. My Itunes database is where it should be in c:\documents and settings\user\my documents\my music
My question is why is the Itunes Library file becoming damaged so often? Could it be Spysweeper, Norton Antivirus, PerfectDisk Defrag Utility...?
I have even spent $25 and tried Anapod to manage my music but I don't like it very much...but I could get used to it if Itunes doesn't start behaving properly.
    Thanks for any sugestions.

I too have a damaged iTunes library. all of a sudden, it seems. It was working fine yesterday and then this afternoon I opened iTunes to find a song and there was no library, no playlists, just an empty library page. I totally freaked out because I've got 83 GB worth of music (not backed up, stupid of me). When a library is damaged, does that mean I cannot reimport the music files from the damaged library? Rumpole, when you re-imported all of your music, did you re-import from CDs? Or were you able to use those music files from the "damaged" iTunes music folder? And what about all of those free music files from iTunes on Free Music Tuesday? All gone? Please reply, SOMEONE, so I can either calm down or completely wig out. I can't handle the idea that I may have lost ALL that music!!!
Details: iTunes is on my C drive, and the music is on my D drive, with the setting that all music gets imported directly to my iTunes library on the D drive. I've had iTunes for years and never had a real problem with it. Now, and it seems that this happened after I upgraded to 6.0.4.2 fairly recently. AAAAAHHHH!!!

  • Recovering a damaged iTunes library

So one day I open iTunes to discover a huge chunk of my music missing. I was missing about 1500 songs, and apparantly it rolled back to about 3 months ago. I'm very orderly with my music, and I have spent countless hours organizing the music information, ratings, etc. I still have the damaged iTunes library file, but of course it doesn't work. If worst comes to worse I'll buy one of those applications that copy the iPod data to iTunes, but if there's another way, please help me out.
And what the **** caused this? The only thing I could think of that could cause it was me installing the Ruckes music player.

theres a program that you can download i think its called music rescue. you plug your ipod in and it will download all the songs back on to your computer. you might lose your ratings but it saved my *** before once when i lost all my music. hope this helps.

  • Repairing "damaged" iTunes library?

Is there any way of repairing a damaged library file? Or is there a problem with the current version of iTunes that corrupts library files when it reads them? Here's my situation:
I opened iTunes (latest version 7.4.2) the other day and it said my library was corrupted/damaged, and it made a new library file. All the music files are intact. I tried to copy over a backup library file from a month ago (which worked without problems a month ago) but it said that it too was corrupted/damaged. This doesn't make sense to me, and seems to indicate another kind of problem rather than with the library file.
So my question is as follows. Is there a way to:
    a. Do something to iTunes to make it recognize my Library as valid?
    b. Repair a "damaged" library file somehow?
    Thanks
    -Kevin

RELAX -- i was able to restore my iTunes Library to work again without any changes or loss. -- see below for what i did, here's how it happened...
...when my ext HD was accidentally disconnected while running itunes, the app froze. I reconnected the HD and restarted itunes. A dialog box saying something like importing data came up and it stayed for a long period and i could see it was working the HD. i probabably should have let it run until it was done, but i pressed the stop option after 5 minutes because i thought it might be hung up. Seems all the HD jogging meant it was rebuilding the 160 Gb library -- who knew?
anyway, i guess the app was trying to do an automatic restoration process (we need to communicate better, iTunes...) The aborted process created a new library file that had only about a quarter of my music and no playlists, which obviously is not OK at all, so i came to this discussion for some clues...I saw a lot of discussion about reloading everything which seemed kinda wack, and was not an option so i pieced together some bits of best answers.
    What worked for me was:
    1.Quit iTunes.
    2. Copy the largest, most recent library from the "Previous itunes library" folder to desktop. It will have a date appended to its name.
    3. New default iTunes library and iTunes Library.xml files are created in the iTunes folder if you restarted iTunes when it couldn't read your preferred library. The itunes library file has an itunes logo on it and the iTunes Library.xml file is a text document. Trash these two new files. Don't bother with other Library files in sub-folders, because just the two top level Library files are read by the app.
    4. Drag the library file from the desktop back into the iTunes Music folder. The file should be renamed just "iTunes Library" -- Don't worry about not adding a replacement iTunes Library.xml file - a new one will automatically regenerate if the iTunes Library can be read.
    5. Start iTunes and ta-da...Hopefully that'll do it. Do something to celebrate, I was so stoked i signed up for this discussion to share what worked for me... Help a neighbor, or do something nice...

  • Damaged iTunes Library causing problems

My iTunes library is damaged after shut down and iTunes has restarted empty.
I have tried to reimport all my music files but the same thing has happened again (three times).
This has also affected my dock, passwords etc - I am afraid this may be part of a bigger problem.
How do I get my Mac functioning again and get my iTunes working etc?

I have a similar problem, and can't find the proper files to delete. HELP desired! Facts: 2 computers (Dell, XP Pro, 1 w USB 1.1, 1 w/ USB 2.0), 2 iPods, different libraries on each machine. iTunes 7.5 on each comp. One comp/iTunes/library works flawlessly with both iPods. Other system "can't read or write to the hard drive" of either iPod after loading approx 70 trax out of more than 1000 in library. Have tried to uninstall iTunes using Windows uninstaller, done the 5 Rs 50 times, restored one of the iPods multiple times (and sent it to Apple twice), completely deleted and reloaded library, etc. Clearly there are files someplace that Windows uninstaller doesn't find, and they have been corrupted. Is there an Apple uninstaller for iTunes, and if so, where does one find it? If not, where might the corrupted files be hidden? I have searched for everything cantaining "Apple", "iTunes", "*.itl" and deleted everything I found, but the corrupted files still exist somewhere. Anybody have any thoughts?

  • Damaged iTunes library, again

This problem is driving me bananas.  I'm getting the dreaded "The file 'iTues Library.itl' does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file.."
All of my media lives on a Lacie external drive.  I've saved all of the media to my desktop, wiped and re-partitioned my external drive multiple times, and have re-imported all of my media.  I've swapped out FW wires, as well as which port on the Lacie I'm using.
iTunes will function properly for a day or two, and then music will start to skip, and ultimately, I'll get the message.
    I'm running iTunes 10.6.3.
I'm running OS 10.6.8 on an Intel iMac.
I've read hundreds of posts and replies, and I cannot figure out how to fix this problem short of continually cleaning my external drive and starting over - which takes about two hours to do every time,
Can anyone offer a suggestion as to how to start at square 1 and reset things so that I'm free and clear of this craziness?
Many thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer -
    Krs

Sigh I just found out about holding down the option key while opening iTunes to choose a library, and it turns out my iTunes Library (damaged) file is actually damaged. Is there another way for me to recover my playlists and put my songs back into iTunes? Thanks!

  • Damaged Itunes Library File

    Hi
When I opened my itunes today I discovered that only a third of my total songs were displayed. When i look under my music it says that the itunes library file has been damamged. Any know how i fix this, have I lost all my music?
    Thanks
    Gordon

I am suffering the same problem. I DO love apple products but please fix this terrible problem with iTunes, it's making me sick. I find myself backing up the .itl and .xml files under the iTunes folder almost every night because I fear losing them, which happens about every 3 to 4 weeks, no matter if I do upgrade or not to a newer version of iTunes. It used to happen when I clicked on upgrade, then I learned to make a full backup before upgrading and the problems seemed to fade away (all i had to do was upgrade then restore the .xml and .itl files if they were damaged during the process) but all of a sudden today, with no clue as of what was happening, the library got corrupted.
I can see all of you have Windows Vista, just like me, do you think that can be the cause???

  • Damaged iTunes Library.itl file, anyway to recover?? pls help!

    Hi there,
My harddrive has gone through some bad blocks and subsequently had to be replaced. I'm now going through and trying to salvage all that I can off the old HD, however it looks like one of the corrupted/damaged files is the one i need most; the "iTunes Library.itl" and the "iTunes Music Library.xml" files which are found in the iTunes folder. I organise a lot of music via playlists and I believe that these two files are the two that hold all the playlist data.
Apart from data recovery centers, is there any other possible way that I could recover these two files? Seems crazy that I would spend $800 on recovering about 50mb, however they are incredibly important!
    Hope someone can help,
    cheers,

first check to see if the itunes .itl library file, or any folders in the folder heirarchy above it have somehow been set to "read only". if they have, try switching that off.
What are the iTunes Library files?
if no joy with that, see:
iTunes for Windows: "Disk is locked" or "iTunes folder cannot be found" when installing or opening iTunes

  • Repair damaged iTunes library?

    Hello,
First of all, I know this question has been asked many times, but I'm quite frustrated by what poor answers there have been. None of them actually actually address how to repair a library, just replace it from back-ups, etc., which is not an option for me (you'll see why below).
This morning, to my horror, I got a notification that my library was damaged and that a new library would be created. "No problem," I said, "This has happened before. I will just use a copy from Previous Libraries."
I looked in there and the last copy of my library iTunes saved was from months ago; most of my ratings and playlists would be gone (all less than 6 months old).
So, let me put this clearly for anyone who replies: using a saved library from the Previous Libraries folder is not an option.*
I then found the method of using iTunes Library.xml to regenerate your old library with playlists and such. This looked promising except that when I launched iTunes and it made the new blank library, it also erased everything in the .xml file. Very, very stupid design on Apple's part. So now I have my damaged .itl file, my new, empty .itl file, as well as an overwritten, blank, .xml file.
Does anyone know any way to actually repair a damaged .itl file? Obviously if some part is corrupted, I expect to lose A playlist or SOME ratings or anything, but now I'm losing 50-ish playlists and 5000 track/album ratings and my heart is broken. I'm imagining it has some sort of hierarchical structure as the .xml file has, and hoping there exists a method of cleaving the unreadable records from an otherwise solid database.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thank you,
    Ian
*It would be normally, so on a side note, can anyone tell me why iTunes might not have been making back-ups regularly? Is there a way to force iTunes to make a back-up in Previous Libraries on a daily basis or something?

There isn't a way to repair a .itl file unless the damage is part of something greater happening to your computer where the directory is damaged and repairing that (e.g., Disk Utility) fixes files in general.  The .itl can only be handled by the iTunes application.  It is in proprietary binary format so it isn't something you can edit like a .xml.
iTunes does not do backups of any kind.  The previous libraries are created when you update the iTunes application and it creates a new copy of the library to use with the newer iTunes version.  If you want to automate backup you will need to include it as part of a larger scale backup of your computer (not a bad idea) or write something such as an Automator script to start iTunes where it copies the library files to a folder with a date time stamp and then starts the iTunes application.
What exact steps did you do in using the .xml?  It should not have erased the .xml unless you put it in the iTunes folder of the new library you were creating.
iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451 - use .xml version of library file to restore most of the information in your library.  Has you drag the .xml to the Desktop then use the import command to create playlists.

  • Persistent damaged itunes library file

Has anyone had any problems with their itunes library file being damaged every time they open itunes? This started a few days ago and initially I lost all of my playlists. I started recreating my library and all was fine. I even opened and closed itunes several times. But now, every time I open itunes it tells me my library is damaged. At one point it said some of my itunes files were missing and I had to reinstall itunes. I had already done this once when all these problems started. I have searched the forums for similar issues but mainly what I'm finding are posts regarding the Sony Vaio issues. I'm using a Dell. I also have Symantec anti-virus protection (Norton Internet Security).
I'm extremely frustrated with this issue. I am thinking this all started after I upgraded to the latest version of itunes. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I've had exactly the same problem for over a month. If I'm unlucky enough to have plugged my iPhone in when this happens it completely wipes all my apps, music and setting. Really useful!
Have tried re-installs of current version, old version and the latest version of iTunes with no luck at all. Sometimes it can go for days without falling over, other times it's everytime I open it. It has been working fine until the 8.2 upgrade messed it all up. v9 hasn't fixed it either.
Annoyed doesn't start to convey my feelings with this as everytime this happens I'm forced to re-install everything onto the iPhone and completely re-build my music, podcast and app libraries and playlists.
What would be nice is a way of identifying what's caused it so I can purge the file from my system or get a patch from Apple. Until such a time I'm not using iTunes anymore.

  • Invalid "iPod Games Library" creates damaged iTunes library

About once every other week when I fire up iTunes, I get this message:
The file "iPod Games Library" does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has created a new iTunes library and renamed this file to "iTunes Library (Damaged)".
All my media files are still on my hard drive, but I have to start from scratch with my library and all of my playlists. And with 160GB of files and dozens of playlists to rebuild, it's no small task.
Is there a way to resurrect my old library once it has been declared "damaged." Or is there some other means of recovering all of those playlists I spend so many hours putting together?
    MacBook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I have encountered the same issue and can't find a stable solution (other than storing 2 - 3 copies of the library file before shutting down).
I have added a new hard drive, imported 27K songs multiple times, exported libraries and still no luck.
I would certainly appreciate any other suggestions to help resolve this.
    Thanks

  • Invalid iTunes library/damaged iTunes library

I created a library for all my media with the option key and iTunes on my external hard drive. All my music, TV shows, podacsts, etc. is stored there and all is intact, except I launched iTunes like normal and I get the message
"The file 'iTunes Library' does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has created a new iTunes library and renamed this file to 'iTunes Library (Damaged)'"
I've read other threads. I can't seem to rebuild the library with the .xml file. I tried the drag your library to the desktop thing and that doesn't work.
All my physical data is fine, but I need the library back so I don't have to spend weeks recreating it by hand.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank You!

Indie, I don't understand this part. Do you just mean re-creating your playlists and reassigning star ratings and that kind of thing? I took your "having to play all the files" literally and don't know what that has to do with anything.
I hope the Apple Store folks advised you to make regular backups of the critical iTunes Library file. Some people are wise enough to keep a backup of their iTunes Music folder. Fewer make a backup of the iTunes Library file, but that's how you can recover from an incident like yours with the least amount of work.

  • Help please...damaged itunes library??

whenever i try to open my itunes library a message comes up that says: the file "i tunes library.itl" does not appear to be a valid itunes library file. itunes has attempted to recover your itunes library and renamed this file to "i tunes library (damaged).itl" This message has come up ever since I downloaded itunes 8...and i tried reinstalling it. Please Help!

same here. dont listen to all the "copy paste move rename" stuff everybody else says to do. i have narrowed it down to a tag issue. a name or some info in the tags on a particular song is typer wrong or something. either that or a whole mp3/acc file is corrupted and you need to replace it. next time itunes does this find out what song itunes loads last and see if the next one has problems. I still have the problem, but it seems all my songs are still there, which is a breakthough for me.

  • Damaged itunes library files?

hi, i keep getting this problem that i cannot find an explanation for. every so often i will go to open my itunes music library and instead of loading the library it will say it is importing, it goes on forever, and i mean forever. when i press stop it will say my music folder is damaged and i find most of my music has disapeared, as has all my settings. i then have to make all my playlists again and so on and re-subscribe to podcasts. this happened to any of you guys? any tips on how to remedy the situation.
    cheers.

This happened to me yesterday. I have no idea what caused it, but it seems I can not retrieve anything unless it was already on the ipod. All the playlists are gone. It *****! Have you found a solution?

  • Itunes library damaged - help!

My Itunes library became damaged today. All of the sudden I have only 158 songs in my library instead of over 4000 and all of my playlists are gone. There is a "damaged" Itunes library icon in my music folder now which was created at 10:45 this morning and modified at 1:16p.
Also my IPhoto has been acting strangely for the last couple of weeks. I've had to recreate my photo library a couple of times over that time and some of my photos have disappeared altogether. I downloaded the IPhoto Manager program last night and had some luck with it but I'm wondering if these issues are somehow related.
    Thanks for you help.

Restore that backup you take regularly... Ah, OK.
    *Empty/damaged library after upgrade/crash*
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the *Previous iTunes Libraries* folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename *iTunes Library* as *iTunes Library (Empty)* and then rename the restored file as *iTunes Library*. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See Music Folder Files Not Added and Super Remove Dead Tracks for clean-up tools , if required.
