Darwin/BSD setup problem

I have rebuilt the netinfo db and rebooted using michael conniff's procedure after being stuck at the darwin/BSD login and password page and run through the initial setup, but when I reboot I begin the setup process however my computer seems to get stuck in third page, choose keyboard language. I hit continue and nothing happens. I keep trying to go back but nothing happens when I select the
language again and hit continue. Any suggestions? please help

Assuming nobody else has a better idea... The obvious assumption here is that your system is fairly well stomped, either the disk volume structures or potentially failing or faulty disk or system hardware.
I'm going to hope that you do have a current disk backup. If not, you're well deep into a difficult area now, as the next sequence involved here is to reset the PRAM (NVRAM on Intel), and (worst case) to reinstall from the DVD distro. (See below for target disk mode.)
Insert the distro DVD and hold down C when you boot up. Try using Disk Utility for its disk repair, and for its repair permissions. See if this allows you to reboot.
Insert the distro DVD and hold down D when you power up. This starts up the hardware diagnostics. Run some tests and see if something turns up.
Hold ApplePR when you power up, and continue holding until past the third startup chime. Now see if you can reboot after the PRAM/NVRAM reset; see if this gets you past your error.
The last in the sequence here is to boot the DVD (again, hold C down when you power up) and to re-install after wiping the disk.
If you have access to another Mac and you don't have a current backup of your data, power up the box holding T. This is FireWire target disk mode, and allows you to connect into your Mac disk from another Mac. This can potentially allow you to fetch over your files from the other Mac; to use your Mac disk as an external drive from another Mac.

I am facing problem with my imac ,on start it goes to black Darwin/Bsd Screen,no gui.
i have done the following procedure available on some forums but with no result.

Starts up like the first time you buy a new Mac, but after filling in all that info again, you should have access to the computer and the other Users & files will still be there... though I was just thinking, this new User probably shouldn't be the same name as an existing one.
If that doesn't work for you (and some users have reported it has not worked for them), try Niel's procedure Making the Setup Assistant reappear.

Booting to Darwin/BSD, Setup Assistant Crashing

Last night I was simultaneosly updating OSX and my iPod using Software Update, when the screen dimmed and turned grey with the message stating that I needed to restart my computer by holding down the power button. Upon doing so the screen turned black instead of booting up normal and went into Darwin/BSD (console). From there i followed the instructions posted to boot in single user mode and read the log. there i was given the message

Can anybody help? I can't get past the blue screen with the spinning wheel thing, it just keeps looping there.

i would follow the instructions for a blue screen in this article. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464. make sure everything is unplugged from your computer. being able to do a safe boot or a boot to the install disk at this time would be extremely valuable. there are things you can do however from single user mode which will sometimes resolve the issue, like renaming the preferences folder or loginwindow.plist. also you might want to try booting to open firmware holding apple-option-o-f and typing the following commands--
reset-nvram (hit return)
set-defaults (hit return)
reset-all (hit return)
the last command restarts the computer. if none of these things work, you will probably have to archive and install your operating system. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120. it is not an uncommon thing to be done for booting to the darwin bsd screen. keep me posted as to whether or not you are making any progress. Darwin/BSD problem: won't go back into OS X

I've seen a number of people have had this problem, but there aren't nearly as many solutions.
This is how it happened: I went to my computer, my firefox immediately crashed and then would not open, so I restarted and got a prompt screen saying "Darwin/BSD (michaels-powerbook-g4-15.local) (console).
This is the first I've ever heard of any sort of a command prompt on a Mac, until I googled the problem.
I am able to log in, I repaired the disk using some commands I read on a previous post on here (which I can't find, but I remember it was answered by a Michael C.), yet that did not work once I rebooted.
Basically, I'm wondering if there's a way to fix this without reinstalling OS X. I'm sure my CD is around the house somewhere but I wouldn't have a clue of where to start looking.
I'd greatly appreciate any help. Thanks.

BIG PROBLEM! Darwin/BSD but MORE! AHH

Okay, here is the story.
I came home after a trip and I was presented with the Darwin/BSD problem. Well I did what the other threads said and checked my log. My log said things like "authorization failed" but no "exiting to consol" There were PAGES AND PAGES AND PAGES so I didn't check it all. I figured i'd take it into an apple store or something... So I waited about a week. Then I turend it on again and BOOM. I was presented with "Choose your language" as if my Apple was completely restarted. Well I got really excited and told it english, and watched the welcome video.
Then I picked my country...
And then..
It said "Do you already own a mac?"
And I had three choices
"-Transfer my information from another mac
-Transfer my information from another partition on this mac
-Do not transfer my information"
Well see this is where another problem starts. See.. I don't KNOW if I "partitioned" my hard drive.. I sort of doubt it, unless its like automatic.. Well I surely didn't want to "NOT transfer" my information, so I clicked the partition one, and it went to a screen where it began searching. WEll it searched...
and it searched...
and it searched...
For days, hahah.
I finally gave up and FORCE turned it off because the GO BACK button would not work...
This same thing happened twice, and at this very moment I'm at the same screen asking me how I want to transfer my information.
And let me tell you this- I CAN NOT lose this info on my computer. It is some of my most valuble documents... so PLEASE, PLEASE someone help me. Do I say "Do not transfer" amd it will already be on there? Or do I take it to the apple store and get them to retreive my harddrive information somehow in single user mode or something.

Darwin/bsd problem

Hi,
I am having a problem with my iBook G4. I see many people having the same problem and read many of those threads but most people have a slighly different thing happening from mine. So here is mine.
After turning on mac you will see Apple logo with grey background with a wheel thing spinning.
Then blue background and spinning...... Black screen and white text that says
"Darwin/BSD (s-Computer.local)(console)"
login:
I type login(or whatever letter, seems like it doesn't matter what I type) and hit "Return".
It says "Password:" and I see a white cursor but I can't type anything..... Only thing that I can do is hit Reurn but then it turns into blue screen and comes back to black screen again.
Having read other people's post on this forum I tried to do the same thing like "Command＋S", "Command＋C"...... or fsck...? I am sorry I really don't know what these things are doing but at least I am trying to get a grasp of what is going on but I gave up. Is
Fortunately I had another computer so I ended up on this forum. Obviuosly I like to know how to get out of this but another question is "Is it possible to transfer all of the data from this iBook to the computer I am using now?" I have a firewire cable but since iBook is not moving, you cannot transfer data?

I thought in order to do that I turn on my desktop one (the one I am using now) with T held on? I was doing that and yellow sign was flashing. I waited, waiited for maybe 20 min and it didn't go anywhere from that blue screen with yellow sign still flashing. So I thought maybe I was not doing right thing. Or does it take that long to transfer?

Choose not to transfer your information, and then create a new account with the original short name. If you previously created multiple accounts on the system, recreate them all in the same order they were initially created. None of your data will be erased.

Computer boots to black and white Darwin/BSD Screen

My iMac is running 10.4.11. While trying to edit user permissions for local networking, I made a huge mistake. I started changing a permission and realized in the middle that I had messed up. I quickly reset the launcher, and then reset the computer. when the computer was rebooting, It went directly to the darwin screen (black background white letters). I found a thread that gave me hope but ultimately did not solve the problem.
Booting to Darwin/BSD Screen (this is the like to the entire thread)
every thing worked as the article said it would until the end...
"Start up in Single User Mode and type carefully:
/sbin/fsck -y
Repeat the above until it says your disk is OK. Then:
/sbin/mount -uw /
cd /var/db/netinfo
mv local.nidb/ local.nidb.bad
ls -ln /Users
This last command will give you one line for each user, plus one for the "Shared" directory, which doesn't interest us. Each user will have a line like one of these:

I followed all the steps then completed the Setup Assistant and just when it looked like problem solved, I was still sent back to the darwin screen.
Following the setup assistant only made more user accounts. the setup also would not allow me to input "." and " " (periods and spaces) as the article says.
Please help!

While in the B/W desktop go to the System/Accessability preference pane and check to see if this checkbox is selected:
If it isn't toggle it on and then off again and see if there's any change.

Booting in Darwin/bsd question

Hello, I have a macbook that starts up to the darwin/bsd login: screen. I followed the first two steps from Micheal Conniff's posts to a similar question, but this is where i get stuck.
I get to where the log says:
loginwindow[64]: Login Window Started Security Agent

In all likelihood, securityagent is crashing because of a problem with the NetInfo database.
Oh, ok, if the NetInfo database is potentially the root cause and probably has to get fixed anyway, I'll work on that. Any idea why the NetInfo database would just suddenly start causing a problem, and how to prevent this from occurring again?
So I'm to rename local.nidb, delete .AppleSetupDone, then reboot? Is there a typo in your instructions, does the "/" after ".nidb" belong there?
This sounds similar to Apple's "Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server: How to Replace the NetInfo Database" instructions (except Apple doesn't seem to care about matching UIDs & shortnames!), in there they also mention the possibility of restoring from a potentially extant automated backup of your NetInfo database, is this a procedure I should be considering, would it be easier or better than restoring it via Setup Assistant?
If you still think going ahead via Setup Assistant is a better route, I have to figure-out if I think I can guide her through it over the phone. Do you have a rough idea of what info I need to be able to supply besides the UIDs & shortnames? If this works as you expect it to, what's the end state we're left in, is the system likely to be perfectly back to normal and function again as though none of this happened or is there expected to be additional recovery steps to do after this? How risky/disruptive would this be for me to intentionally do this (rename local.nidb) to my own machine (like hers, PB G4 17", except I'm OS 10.4.2) so that I know how it will look when she runs Setup Assistant, would that be a good idea?

Blue screen - after booting into Darwin/BSD

Hi,
after I had the problem of my iMac G5 only booting into Darwin/BSD (which I posted here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1093517&tstart=0), I followed the instructions for recreating the user accounts, as described here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=320663&start=0&tstart=0
Now I'm able to get to the blue screen, and the system doesn't exit into Darwin/BSD any longer. However, the Setup Assistant doesn't start either.
I only see an empty blue screen (I guess it's the GUI base screen) and the menu bar. The menu bar only has to items: one menu 'loginwindow', which doesn't have any entries. And the Apple-logo menu, which has the following menu entries:

- Force Quit...
- Sleep
- Restart...
- Shot Down...

The 'Restart...' entry doesn't work. I can, however, launch the System Preferences window.

Apologies, was a little vague. and as far as my profile goes i have loads of mac's here in the studio.
using MBP latest model, Snow Leopard with latest updates.
1. boot up in windows XP SP3 (bootcamp NTFS formatted 32GB partition) - all ok
2. shut down windows and re boot in OSX
3. boots up but fails to complete and hangs on blue screen (just prior to desk top picture loading)
4. press and hold power button to shut down
5. reboot in OSX - boots up fine this time

Startup Leads to Darwin/BSD Login Screen

After scouring this discussion forum for solutions to my problem, I've come up with multiple partial answers, but nothing that really fixes my system. I was working in Photoshop (CS2) yesterday when the program quit and refused to open again. So I shut it down and rebooted the machine. The gray screen with the Apple and the progress bar came up for about 10 minutes, then switched to a black console Darwin/BSD login screen. Unfortunately, I don't know my login, because my machine is set to auto-login.

Which was VERY helpful. I followed Michael Conniff's directions carefully, checking the log and running 'fsck'. But the error messages I'm seeing are different than the ones listed in that post.
I tried restoring the NetInfo database, as per the previous post, but when I rebooted, I still got stuck at the gray screen with the Apple logo.
Please help!

However, given the current behaviour of the forums I will reply here if I can, since there's no guarantee of me seeing a new topic
Standard post follows:
Where the system log shows "AuthorizationRef doesn't have a username" followed by "exiting to console", the NetInfo database is corrupt. so we will need to give you a new one. This will involve re-creating the user accounts (don't worry, this doesn't take too long) but the order in which they are created matters. I recommend you print this out in a largish mono-spaced font so you don't miss any spaces (or add extra ones). Note that case is important.
Start up in Single User Mode (see Mac OS X: How to Start up in Single-User or Verbose Mode for details) and type carefully:
/sbin/fsck -fyRepeat the above until it says your disk is OK. Then:
/sbin/mount -uw /
cd /var/db/netinfo
mv -f local.nidb/ local.nidb.bad
rm -f /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
ls -ln /UsersThis last command will give you one line for each user, plus one for the "Shared" directory, which doesn't interest us. Each user will have a line like one of these:

Installed new software, after restart black screen with Darwin/BSD promt

I have been struggling with thisissue. I installed some new software, a webcam driver called ilook 1321. I restarted my computer but forgot to take the disc out!
Now when I start my ibook G4 i get the black screen with Darwin/BSD (localhost) (console) and login. It accepts my usual login and password, then tells me my last login details and leaves me with localhost: Clarekristensen$.
I have done the disk utility repair, no problems, I also did the fcsk commands, but still goes back to the Darwin command.
I tried to do the Repair disk permissions but this failed with the message "no valid packages". On disc check I saw I had 25.6 gb of space left.
I am now at a complete loss what to do next. I have not backed up for a while so really don't want to re-install Mac OS X and wipe my disk.

Here's the steps I'd take...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Appears to be time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

Can't stop getting Darwin/BSD login; can't log in or start up in Safe Mode

Hi. I'm on an iBook G4 and I think I'm running OS 10.4.1 but I'm unsure. When I turned on my computer tonight, the grey screen popped up, but instead of going to my normal login screen, it went to the black Darwin/BSD screen.
After searching the Support site here as well as Googling, I logged into the Darwin screen and did... something with fsck. At the #root prompt, I typed in /sbin/fsck/ -fy. The screen said that if I wanted to continue checking, I needed to type in "-f", I think, so I did... It said there were "overlapping extent allocation errors" and then it said that it had repaired something. But it didn't say the hard disk "appeared to be okay."
I then (foolishly?) tried to restart my computer in Safe Mode, but it booted in Darwin again.
I then tried to log back into the Darwin screen, but this time it didn't let me -- I type in my username and password and it tells me my password is incorrect. So now I'm worried that I screwed something up during my adventures in fsck.
I also am unable to find the disk that came with my iBook (I honestly don't remember an OS X disk coming with my iBook, but it must've), so I can't reboot from the disk.
I have a desktop G4 with an older version of OS X (10.3, I think)... I'm not sure if I can use that to do Target Disk Mode for this problem or not. (That computer also doesn't have internet access; I'm typing right now from my sister's PC.)

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
First, I suggest that you try this fix suggested by Michael Conniff in this thread.
Next, since it is possible that the fix may not work for you, and you may need to re-install or Archive and Install, you will need to have install disks. Tiger can be purchased from the Apple Store or, on CDs, from applerescue.
If you do not have a backup of your data, yes, using Firewire Target Disk Mode will be one way to rescue your data at this point. If you need assistance with this please post back.

How can I startup from my hard drive instead of Darwin/BSD screen?

I have read most of the forum that was discussed regarding about the darwin/bsd screen. I still can not find the solution to solving my problem.
After using the Disk Warrior disc as a startup to fix the directory, and restarting the computer. It startup from the Disk Warrior disc again. After i took out the disc, this is when the darwin/bsd screen appears.
I had tried the following:
pressing OPTION KEY while it boots up, still wont recognize the HD
pressing C KEY while it boots up, still wont recognize the HD
pressig the SHIFT key while it boots up, still wont recognize the HD
Also, I had misplaced the disk utility disc..
can someone tell me how to resolve this situation..

If Option booting does not get you to boot off your external boot drive there a couple of things I can think of:
1. Hold down the "X" key from a cold start while you hit the power button.
2. Boot from the Installer CD, then go to the Installer Menu and choose startup drive.
3. A third, for good measure. It never hurts to Reset the PRAM, and often helps. Reset PRAM (from a cold start hold down Command + Option + P + R while hitting the power button and holding for 3 chimes. Release and allow to boot.
Hope at least one of these help.

Darwin/BSD Command Prompt after Logging into OSX 10.2.4

I just installed OSX 10.2.4 and after I log in, it sends me to a black command prompt which says the following:

I tried using the login and password I use at the OSX login screen, but it doesnt work.
Any Ideas?

If you do a search on Darwin, you will find that ther are many questions and three or four basic solutions offered, not all of which work in every case.
In your case, since you have a new installation, I suggest that make sure you have a good backup, then reformat, zero all data, re-install the OS, and restore your data.
To reformat, zero and re-install:
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
Select language
Go to the Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select 1 partion in pulldown menu above Volume diagram.
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
Select Erase tab
Select the Macintosh volume under Manufacturer ID.
Select on Security Options button.
Select Zero all data.
(This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Check box to install X11.
Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Connect to Internet.
Go to Apple Menu > Software Update.
Install all updates.
Computer will restart after updates.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
