Dashboard causes runaway swap

Opening a Dashboard widget causes runaway swap, eventually eating all of the free disk space.
I started the Activity Monitor after having problems and rebooting. I ran Mail, Safari, Google Earth, Numbers, and other apps without a problem. Swap wasn't even touched (I have 8GB of RAM). As soon as I used the Dashboard Dictionary widget it started using swap and things got really ugly for response time. As I let it idle, swap would grow a bunch, then some would be given back. If I used an app, such as Mail or Safari, swap would really start to grow, and less would be given back, and esponse time would also deteriorate further.

Opening the Dashboard is the correct syntax - the Dashboard displays widgets.
By chance have you used the "Open in Dashboard" item in Safari's File menu to create a widget showing part of a webpage?
If so, others have reported that same effect - that after having used that function, opening the Dashboard will cause Safari to open one or more windows, even starting up Safari to do so if it is not running.
One solution is to get rid of that widget. Easy way - open the Dashboard; hold down Option and hover the cursor over the widget. A bold X icon will appear on the upper left corner of the widget - click that X.

  • Dashboard causing system freeze

I have just upgraded from a G5 iMac to an Intec iMac - I find that when I select dashboard the windows come "in" to about halfway and then the system freezes and a cold restart is necessary (never happened on the G5 with the same widgets). This doesn't happen every time but much too often - I guess I have a rogue widget, how do I determine which one? - John.

Mihalis, Is there any way I can determine which are Universal and which are not? - John.
The following shows a way to determine if a Widget is Universal.
    iStat pro.wdgt/iStatPro.bundle/Contents/MacOS $ file iStatPro
iStatPro: Mach-O fat file with 2 architectures
iStatPro (for architecture ppc): Mach-O bundle ppc
    iStatPro (for architecture i386): Mach-O bundle i386
But, the first first you should do is determine which Widgets are causing you the problems. Unistall them all and install them one by one until you find the problematic ones.

  • Opening Dashboard Causes additional blank Google windows to open - help?

All of a sudden in the past week, every time I click to open my Dashboard (I use right/upper bar on a 4-bar Kensington track ball to call up Dashboard) several additional Safari windows open up on my desktop with the following complicated "Google-related" urls:

  • Calling up Dashboard causes iTunes and mouse stutter

That pretty much says it... I use F12 with Dashboard coming up as the overlay, not in it's own Space. With iTunes playing, any song or Podcast immediately stutters, as well as a lag in mouse responsiveness. I haven't gone into a real indepth investigation, except to say that it happens with either Safari or Mail being the currently active app when Dashboard is called up, but also when iTunes is the active app.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

No, it's fine with one DVI connected display. Disconnecting either the DisplayPort to DVI adapter from the computer or unplugging the second monitor (Samsung) from the electrical outlet eliminates the problem. As long as the second monitor is powered on everything is ok, it's turning off the second monitor that causes the mouse skipping.
There is more on it here if you're interested...
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1965949?start=0&tstart=0
(This one is not a "new" problem or necessarily related to Lion, as you can see since the first post was from 2009, which coincidentally was the year DisplayPort appeard on Macs if I'm not mistaken).
The problem exists even if iTunes is not open, I recently realized as my mouse has become way more accurate on the desktop! Having iTunes open does make the mouse skipping 10X worse though!

  • Dashboards Causing B1IF Issues

    Hi,
I recently enabled dashboards and soon encountered a situation whereby the server cpu and memory were spiking.
B1IF is on the same server as B1 server so people were reporting sluggish B1 client performance which was fixed once the integration service was restarted on the server (cpu and memory returned to normal).
My first instinct is to separate B1IF from the main server to avoid this happening in future. However, in the past I had SQL separate from the B1 Server and experienced regular upgrade failures every patch upgrade that disappeared when I put SQL and B1 server on the same machine. I would be reluctant to create a similar situation again.
We are using 9.0 PL11. The server is adequately provisioned (quad core xeon with 12GB ram).
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • How does swap in Linux work?

I thought I knew, but I am not so sure anymore.
I have 4GB ram and 2GB swap (I know it works because I even have hibernation), fast SATA HDD and Core 2 Duo.
On occasions I run opera (~1GB), and two virtual machines. As soon as RAM utilization goes in the vicinity of 3.8GB, my system becomes totally unresponsive and to recover it, I try to close opera window, but the first challenge is to actually move a mouse, and the second to wait about a minute before the click takes any effect.
I was thinking of putting swap on a USB flash drive to make things fast, but judging from this, it does not look like swap is being used at all.

meph wrote:This is odd. I'm starting to doubt that it's caused by swapping itself. Just think about it, how does running out of memory present itself? It could hang, it could give you all sorts of error messages, but being unresponsive without any errors is weird. It means that the system is actually running but is being slowed down by something. Misbehaving process, whatever.
I don't know. Windows behaves pretty much as my Arch when it runs out of memory.
    meph wrote:
    1) Try using swap file instead. Using it will mean that different physical location on your hdd will be used, and also that it will use your root partition, which is known to work well (i guess?). If it still misbehaves after you start using it, you will rule out faulty hdd (however unlikely that already is).
    2) Did you ever have this problem without using your VM's? Try and use all your memory without running those, and see what happens. For example opening a dvd image in a text editor could work? Just fill your memory with random garbage and see what happens, and while doing that you may want to watch htop again. This should rule out a problem in whatever virtualization software you're using.
    3) Try and turn swap off before trying to induce the problem. Again, this is about knowing how exactly will your system behave when it actually runs out of memory. Expected outcome is flooding you with error messages about killing processess, but the system should remain somewhat responsive. Cluttered and obviously not working well, but responsive. This step could help identify a memory defect, obviously the next step would be running a memtest.
    4) This one is rather obvious and I suppose you already did it, but look carefully into your log files, especially kernel.log. Or better yet, induce the problem, take a precise note about when exactly things started to go bad, and then look for errors in your logs around that time.
    1. That's quite a bother. I gonna have to do it a little bit later, if you think it is absolutely necessary.
    2. I opened two ISO files (2GB each) with geany, and the result was pretty much the same, except this time swap usage went up to 700MB, but that could be because htop managed to refres after 2-3 minutes, while previously it did not. But the system was freezing up pretty much the same way.
    3. Again, the result is similar. Maybe the system is a bit more responsive, especially in the first minute of running on full RAM, but afterwards everything else locks up, too. Still, the mouse is movable for most of the time, but it could be a coincidence.
    silentsnake,
I usually have +20 tabs opened in my browser. I think opera is doing a fairly good job. Certainly better than firefox.
The easiest solution would be to buy more RAM. RAM is very cheap - you can get 4x4 GB (16 GB total) for around 80 €.
Yeah, I wish I was running DDR3. The cheapest 4GB SODIMM DDR2 module on ebay.co.uk is almost £60

  • My mac become so slow i can't use any app. All the time there is sound of hard drive but no swapping is reported by system monitor.

    Hi Folks,
recently my Mac after latest upgrade of Maverics 10.9.2 degraded performance dramatically to the point that when I switch from one app to another i should wait 30-40 seconds to get the response back from the System. The Hard drive is in use each time I click a mouse button. Sounds like an excessive hard drive usage usually caused by swapping. But System monitor shows Free memory ) Swapping and plenty of Idle CPU.
I tried to find the Process that might over uses the disk but all appear to be Ok. i couldn't spot any process that would over use the IO.
IO looks normal from System Monitor.
I checked the Apple Support whenever it is a defected hard disk issue but according to serial this Mac is not under disk replacement program.
Any tips on what should I do to find the root cause?

  • Suppress Error messages on Dashboard

    Hi ,
Is there any work around or fix I can use to avoid any live office error pop up on Dashboard caused by Webi server and web server?
LO Errors pop up when servers are busy or tomcat(web server) down but after clicking ok on error pop up data refresh fine on dashboard.
Does somebody get around these annoying errors pop up?
    Thanks In Advance
    Kumar

It's not just you, I am seeing this behaviour too.
Where 10.4 clients would fail silently, 10.5 is throwing the "Connection Failed" error message as you described.
I agree it is confusing to end users and would like a way to supress it, the only thing that springs to mind is manually mounting the share via a login hook that first checks network availability rather than using a WGM configured mount. Trouble is, to mount an afp share with the users credentials via a script is a whole new problem in itself.

  • Swaps in PXA Buffer (abap buffersizw)

    Hi Experts
In my production server lot of swaps in PXA buffers, yesterday only I increased PXA buffer size 240000 to 270000, but still I am getting swaps in that PXA Buffer (ABAP/BufferSize), any body give the how much memory I have to increase to that respective buffers, what is the solution to over come  this swap problems in PXA buffer
    Best Regards
    Mohammed. Khan

    Hello,
Increasing the size of buffer swap space depend on hardware configuration of your system.
First check how much total paging space is allocated in your system.
Depending on your hardware configuration you can increase size of  buffers.
you can check current value & SAP default value in your system...
check system load in your system. Sometimes due to more load swapping occurs...
If this continuously happens you need to check for all buffers.
You can check in ST02, which buffers are causing more swaps...
    take action acc to that...

  • Spotlight mds bringing down system, constantly leaking RAM & disk access

    Spotlight is going rampant here.
The mds (metadata server, aka Spotlight) process is constantly accessing the disk and writing some data to it, filling it until there is no space left on the device. I cannot find out what file it is writing to. I've tried with fsevener which sadly didn't help.
mds is also eating up all the CPU cycles it can get leaving my system fully loaded at all times.
The mds process is also taking up inceasingly huge amounts of memory, causing permanent swapping of memory and bringing the system to a grinding halt. (Cache Hits go down below 1%, About 250.000 pageins happen per minute.) Memory Footprint is going up to several hundred MB or real RAM.
    $ vm_stat
Mach Virtual Memory Statistics: (page size of 4096 bytes)
    Pages free: 53166.
    Pages active: 275736.
    Pages inactive: 135633.
    Pages wired down: 59698.
    "Translation faults": 10217862.
    Pages copy-on-write: 136166.
    Pages zero filled: 5983710.
    Pages reactivated: 96772.
    Pageins: 1236330.
    Pageouts: 77113.
Object cache: 24391 hits of 1183451 lookups (2% hit rate)
(This is 95 minutes after reboot. Only running: Finder, Terminal, LaunchBar, Safari, Mail)
This bahaviour goes until the disk is full and I get a "low disk space" warning. Then mds crashes, the system frees up the (temporary?) files written by the process and also frees the RAM taken up by it. Resulting in even more swapping, as the system tries to page-in other processes now. Subseqently the system launches a new mds process and the game starts over.
    Things I've tried to remedy:
Rebuilt spotlight index several times. Including totally deleting the .Spotlight-V100 folder on local volumes. Doesn't help, takes about 16 to 20 hours to rebuild on my machine, so is not a thing one wants to just-try.
Reinstalled 10.5.5 Combo Update, doesn't help. Privileges are repaired.
Turn off spotlight completely: Does indeed stop the madness, but now I cannot find anything on my system. So this is not a solution at all.
I've tried to keep the index small by excluding more and more stuff in the privacy settings of the Spotlight PreferencePane. This doesn't solve the problem either.
    My System:
    PowerBook G4 1.5GHz
2GB RAM (Maximum) (Tested with ASD ok, Rember ok. Different RAM modules, also ok.)
160GB HD (5GB free) (SMART ok, Blockscan ok, Filesystem ok, File privileges ok)
Mac OS X 10.5.5 (9F33) including Security Update 2008/007 (no further updates available)
Any help or suggestions are welcome. I'm happy to provide any further details you may need.
    Best regards

This probably isn't Spotlight so much as one of the index plugins (mdimporters). Spotlight itself is very robust, however, all it takes is a single bad indexing plugin. MDS, basically, identifies a file type and loads in a list of plugins that are registered for that file type and executes a routine in the plugin to grab the metadata. If the plugin is improperly written, it can go haywire.
Thanks for the suggestion, I already had checked that.
I don't have any custom (read non-apple provided) Spotlight or QuickLook Plug-Ins on my system. So it is unlikely that it is related to a custom .mdimporter Plug-In. (Might be a buggy Apple one going rampant though.)
I've personally found Spotlight to be quite a solid technology as well. Just the user interface provided by Apple is terrible and especially useless in the Finder (Taking away functionality, or making it horrific to use since Tiger… but that is another story.)
What was the last application that you installed prior to it going crazy? Perhaps one of the last 2-3...
Failing that, you can wipeout the metadata database for a Volume like so (from Terminal.app):
    *sudo mdutil -E /Volumes/yourvolumehere*
... or '/' in place of '/Volumes/...' for the local disk. You can turn off metadata indexing for a volume entirely like so:
As I already said, rebuilding the index from scratch doesn't help. Completely deleting it, and rebuilding doesn't remedy as well.
    *sudo lsof | grep mdimporter*
... which might help you understand what's being used to index, and this:
    /System/Library/Spotlight/Chat.mdimporter/Contents/MacOS/Chat
    /System/Library/Spotlight/iCal.mdimporter/Contents/MacOS/iCal /System/Library/Spotlight/Mail.mdimporter/Contents/MacOS/Mail

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 & CC Shutting down iMac when exporting.

    Hi!
I have had my iMac for around a year: Mid 2011 iMac 21", 12GB RAM. I switched from FCPX because Adobe just had more for me. FCPX exported fast and fine. But when I move to Adobe suddenly exporting becomes an issue. I have tried both CS6 and CC both do the same thing.
I will be exporting something normaly full 1080p DSLR footage and it will get half way into the export and shut down the mac. The mac will just restart. It does it every single time. The issue has now also started when just trying to render a prodject not even export. I want to use Adobe but I just can't. It does the same exporting from Premiere and AME. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP.
I have taken my iMac into Apple and they have run stress tests for 24 hours and it was fine... Please help!

Are youusing FilmConvert by chance? I was seeing the same issue; when I finally tested the same project by duping the sequence and removing only the filmconvert filter - all was well. FilmConvert is causing runaway RAM usage which eventually made the Swap file so big the computer rebooted after a Kernel Panic.

  • Why is my hard drive suddenly full?

A truly amazing thing has happened. My iMac, which has about 700Gig of memory, suddenly announces it only has 3kb spare! (I discovered this when it refused to let me copy a photo from one file to another). It seems to be because the folder 'Library' is overloaded, but I can't find out which part of it. I have not used the computer for anything which might use up that kind of memory (or any kind of memory - I have iTunes but that only holds 6,000 songs). I am running Time Machine successfully (in itself a small miracle). Does anyone know how I can run diagnostics to find out which file is causing the problem - it certainly shouldn't be there. Thanks so much for reading this.

you probably have some runaway process that's eating up all the space. first, restart the computer. if the problem was with a runaway swap file it will go away. if not you can figure out what's taking all the space using 3rd party tools like [Whatsize|http://whatsize.en.softonic.com/mac], [Omindisksweeper|http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper>, [Disk Inventory X|http://www.derlien.com> or [Grandperspective|http://sourceforge.net/projects/grandperspectiv>. there is also a terminal method described on [this page|http://homepage.mac.com/francines/articles/TigerMisc.html].
you might want to start with the terminal method since it doesn't require installing anything.

  • How to minimize memory usage with VM settings

Using JDK 1.4.2, I am trying to minimize the memory usage of my application.
Our GUI application consumes about ~20MB of heap space during normal operation, but it can easily grow to 50MB in some rare cases (Special feature accessed by user).
We have to be able to run multiple instances (separate process/VMs) of this application on low end Windows PCs.
The applications don't usually run for very long (less than 8 hours).
    Here is my problem.
If I set the -Xms=20M -Xmx=64M, it works fine, but the GC is not very aggressive and soon, the application starts using a lot of memory, even if it is not really needed. And it never returns the memory to Windows OS.
So each VM take more memory than really needed, which causes significant swapping on these low end PC (little RAM available).
If I reduce the -Xmx flag, than I run out of memory in the rare cases where I need the full memory.
Ideally, I would like to configure the GC to be more aggressive, i.e. the GC should collect instead of getting additional memory from the OS when possible.
I read a few papers on Sun's web site about HotSpot tunning, but most of them are geared for large servers.
    Thanks!
    Francois

And you are using the task manager to determine how "much" memory is being used correct?
I suggest that you search out and read the numerous threads on this site that discuss that subject.

  • My MacBook Pro (mid 2010) has cursor problems when the fan comes on.

Hi, I have been trying a variety of recommendations to see why my MacBook Pro seems to be having slowness issues.  yes, I took it in to the Mac store and they found nothing.  I have tried some other things that I think may have helped but now I see that specifically the cursor goes crazy when the fan kicks in and when the fan goes off it is okay again.  I have run SMART Utility & I didn't see anything from that.

The fans coming on and the cursor going crazy are a correlation, not a cause-and-effect.
The fans come on when measured temperatures inside your computer are getting too high. The fans come on to try to exhaust the excess heat. If the cursor goes crazy at the same time, this is likely to also be caused by the computer getting too hot, not by the fans.
    This is one possible cause:
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity

  • MacBook Pro running very slowly - please see EtreCheck report

My MacBook Pro (mid 2012 model) has become very slow and unresponsive recently. Pretty much any click or command I make there is a delay, and often the coloured spinning wheel appears for a few seconds until it executes the command. Very frustrating. I know this is a popular question, but I've pasted my EtreCheck report below, s others have done. Any tips on what I should do would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
