Data Recovery on damage hard drive.

Hello everyone. I have a Power PC G4 400 with two hardrives. The original and a newer WD 80 Gig's. The original is still running fine but the new one failed. It starting making clicking sounds. So I decided to move some of the data to the other HD but I lost valuable pictures. Somebody told me that sometimes the arm that reads the data gets stuck. So he told me to open it move around the arm. I also bought a replacement harddrive which I installed and is working fine. I also ordered an external case and put the bad hardrive in it an put the jumper settings as single or Master. I connect it to the computer and it did not apear in the desk top. Then I went to System Profiler and it wasn even showing there. So I changed the jumper settings to slave and If I go to utilities and Disk doctor it will show ther also but unablet to repair permissions. I dont know what to do. Know, everytime I connect it to the comp, theres a windo that says " Do you want to initialize, ignore or eject the disk", Im afraid the if I initialize, I will losse all data inside. Some how I think the drive is working know.
Can anybody tell me If I have the correct jumper settings, Can I buy any software to recover the data. Thanks a lot in advance.

Gonzo, welcome, I have an 80G WD hd in a external enclosure set to Single (no jumpers) and it works fine. If this does not work for you or you can not repair the drive with Disk Utility then DiskWarrior is a reliable option.

  • Power Mac G4 MDD data recovery ftom corrupted hard drive

After my previous post on 4/7, my mac started new symptoms. When I press the power button, the mac starts up with the familiar chime showing the Apple Logo. The daisy spins and spins for a long time, and then the screen goes black and it sounds the chime again and repeats the same thing. It seems the hard drive can't be found. I'm thinking of replacing the hard drive hoping this will solve the problem.
Regretably I don't have a backup copy of recent photos. Is there anyway I can recover data from this diseased hard drive? Can commercial disk repair softwares normaly do this? Has anyone successfully recovered data this way? Any suggestion? Please let me know.

Your hard drive may have hardware and/or electronic problems or it may have a corrupted directory. Can you hear it spinning? If it has a malfunctioning component, software solutions won't be able to repair it. Professional data recovery is an option for dead hard drives, but it's very expensive. If the drive has a badly corrupted directory, a utility like Alsoft's "DiskWarrior" would be worth a try. Prosoft's utility "DataRescue" may also be worth checking out.

  • Data recovery from external hard drive

I'm sick! I was attempting to format my flash drive and I accidentally chose the wrong drive and formatted my Toshiba 3.0 external USB hard drive with over 350GB of data on it. Is there any way at all to recover my files?

Lots of programs out there from which to choose. In the meantime, don't access the drive.

  • DATA RECOVERY for a hard drive that isn't recognized.

    Hi,
I just found today that my hard drive is bad. I had one of those geek squad people come look at it and he was able to get it to boot from the Mac OS X Leopard CD, but my hard drive was no where to be seen.
I'm taking the hard drive to one of those places that specializes in data recovery. But, I was wondering...can they retrieve files that were on the desktop? Or are those files gone forever?

Hello Again! Now that there is serious soul searching going on now would be a good time to think about your backup plans for when you get everything up and running again. If the drive is going off to the recovery center worrying further won't help so I suggest coming up with a good recovery plan for times like these. Hard drives are going to fail and they always seem to fail at the most inopertune times but with a good backup plan this could have only been a restart. A second hard drive is a must if there is anything at all important on the computer. It can be an external or internal. I have 4 320 gig SATA drives in my G4 (and I really don't have anything very important on there) I usually keep two secondary bootable clones and rotate between them in case of a backup failure. Then I try to keep another clone on an external and finally I keep a partition with only a fresh install and my utilities for drive repair. I tinker a lot and I've screwed things up a few times but it really wasn't even a minor irritation. Good luck. Tom

  • Data recovery for crashed hard drive?

Ok, recently my macbook pro internal hard drive crashed (I was receiving the question mark on folder at bootup). I have recently purchased a new hard drive and replaced it with the corrupt one. I tried to gain access to the data using an external caddy, however the hard drive did not appear in finder and I could not mount it in utilities.
Is there any possible way I can recover my files, preferably not through some company which wants thousands of $$$.

    hi friend,
No need to worry. There are many cases due to which hard drive crashes and not works. Don't worry! The data is not lost forever; it is only invisible from your computer. You might be thinking that the disk will overwrite the space of the deleted data with some other data. Running a wrong data recovery software application might corrupt your data and there are chances of losing them forever. By using a good hard drive recovery tool you can recover all your lost data from corrupted hard drive, crashed hard drives. You can easily download the free trial version of the software.

  • Retrieving data from a damaged hard drive

The catalog tree on my PowerBook has become corrupted, and the computer won't boot. It will boot from the installation disk or the TechTools disk, but it appears the corruption is irreparable. I'll have to just restore the drive. At this point, I'm just trying to get my photos and music and whatever else I can scavenge off the drive. I have an external hard drive I could move stuff to, but no way of viewing the contents of the damaged drive. My question: is it possible to view the contents of the drive even though it won't boot? How can I retrieve my files before I reformat the drive?
    Thanks,
    Don

DiskWarrior is the best there is to "fix" various types of directory and corruption problems. In most cases, if DW can't fix it, nothing can. Disk Utility is great at finding problems, but can't fix all of them. Every Mac user should have a copy of DW.
Be sure to get DW on a CD, since that's what you boot from to fix the problem on your hard drive. You can download DW, but you have to burn it to a CD or put it on another bootable volume.

  • Data recovery from raid_0 hard drives on Msi Neo 925Xe Platinum

Yesterday my mainboard has "passed out" without reason. My pc was in idle situation and suddenly the monitor turned off. I've checked everything and I found out that it's a mb problem.
I had 2 WD raptors on raid_0 and I would like to know if there is anyway to recover some of my data.
Some thoughts are to find another same mainboard(unlikely to find any) or another mainboard with the same raid controller.
I would like you to propose me any of your ideas for this matter and the raid controller model of the motherboard or even a list of motherboards with the same raid controller.
Thank you in advance, I am desperate.

    Hello Seed_GR,
As long as you try to revive the RAID array on a board which uses a Controller of the same Chipset family, there is a good chance that the migration will be successful.  That means, that it would be worth to try to connect your drives to a board that has a RAID-capable ICH6R, ICH7R, ICH8R or ICH9R Chipset.  Have a look at this test article to see what I am referring to:
    >>TOM'S HARDWARE GUIDE: The Raid Migration Adventure<<
I am sure that a migration from ICH6R (your board) to a board with the latest Intel ICH10R Southbridge would probably have a good chance of succeeding as well.  They just did not test it at the time that article was written.
There is, of course, a chance that such a migration will fail. It is hard to exclude that possibility beforehand.  However, it is definately worth a try.

  • ITune lost in damage hard drive, how to recover all the songs.

Hi everyone, I has lost my iTune in a damage hard drive, now I wanted to sync my iPod with iMac and still wanted to recover my song in the iPod, any one please help.
    Thanks in advance.

    Basics of File Recovery
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When you delete files you erase only the directory entries, not the files themselves. However, the space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • I have a 2nd gen Mac book air with Lion. The hard disk has filled up even though i keep my data , music etc on hard drive . I used disk inspector to find where problem was and it is 20GB in the hidden files under the user directory can i resolve this ?

I have a 2nd Gen MAc book Air with Lion .  The 60GB hard disc has quickly filled up despite me keeping most of my data on a portable hard drive .  I used disk inspector to locate the problem but found that it was was in 20 GB of hidden files in my user directory .  Is this correct and is there anything i can do about it ? Using disk inspector you can not see individual hudden diretories or files. I did unhide them but there is a mass of diretories etc and so no way i could see if this is one or multiple files using the space. Library System and  Applications are at 4 3 and 3 GB respectvely.  The data I actually keep on there is 9GB    Thanks for any help

I think the problem is Quick Time Player. I am using OS 10.6.8 by the way.
    I tried it out again.
I had about 26 GB of space before I played an .avi video.
After the movie started to play (it was slow to load), I got a warning message that my startup disk was full. I opened Disk Utility and it told me I had no space left (about 20 MB or something like that was left).
I watched to the end of the movie.
    Then I quit Quicktime Player.
And I shut down the computer.
I turned on the computer and checked Disk Utility. I have about 26 GB of space.
I think for some reason Quicktime Player uses up a lot of the disk space when it runs movies that are problematic. This movie I was watching did not open with vlc.
I normally use vlc to watch movies.
Probably it doesn't use up this much space when the movie is OK.
I think there's a problem with this particular movie. It is about 50 MB so it's not that big a file. I watch .smi subtitles with it. The Quicktime Player automatically loads the subtitle file in this case because the subtitle file has the same name as the movie file.
I watched about 10 movie files from the same series that I downloaded together and did not have any problem watching them. I watched them on vlc. But this latest movie had problems I think (as I repeat). It did not load on vlc even though I waited for a minute, and normally movies load instantly on vlc.
So I think that movie file caused problems. It made QT player use up a lot of hard disk space.
I had better avoid watching that movie in the future. I don't want it to wreck my hard drive.
So to sum up, everything is back to normal. I have the hard disk space that I should have. However, I am scared of damaging my hard drive due to shonky movie files that eat up all the space when they are played using QT player, and so I will not watch those files in the future, as I do not know why the files do that.

  • Can I restore settings, apps and data from an external hard drive to new Macbook Pro?

I recently lost my Macbook Pro to water damage.  It was about 3 years old and tuned for comfort.  Unfortunately, my most recent backup is at least 3 months old.  I purchased a new MacBook Pro and I'm wondering what my options are for migrating my settings, apps and data from the old hard drive to the new MacBook Pro?  I have a USB drive bay that I plan to attach to the new MBP to gain access to the old hard drive.  Someone suggested Migration Assistant but my research hasn't turned up any information about migrating data from an external drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS!  I guess my research wasn't THAT thorough.   I booted with the external drive attached and setup immediately gave me the option to setup using Migration Assistant.  It was a little slow via USB (2+ hours) but it was nothing compared to the time it would have taken to do it manually.  My new 15" MBP looks exactly like my old 13" MBP.  AWESOME!!!
    Thanks again!

  • I cannot transfer data from my external hard drive to my new mac

I had to get a new hard drive put into my macbook pro because it was failing. So, I moved all my data onto an external hard drive so I would not lose anything. But now I cannot get iphoto or imovie back onto my computer. It says I cannot open it because it is a time machine back up. I don't want to have to purchase iPhoto and iMovie again just because I had to replace my hard drive.

Copying the files directly from a Time Machine backup may be possible but I don't recommend it. Your new hard disk is essentially a new computer to Time Machine, and it will have problems understanding where to put the individual files. What you're trying to do is just not the right way to go about it.
To restore from a Time Machine backup, boot Lion Recovery and select "Restore from Time Machine backup".

  • Can I recover data from a reformatted hard drive?  I did not do a back up prior to talking to Apple Support and the guy having me delete the hard drive and start anew.  My bad but is all lost??

Can I recover data from a reformatted hard drive?  I did not complete a back up prior to talking to Apple Support and the guy having me delete the hard drive (10.5.8) and start anew (10.6.3).  My bad but is all lost?? Years of very important information....

You will need to purchase reovery sofware such as such as FileSalvage
    http://subrosasoft.com/software/filesalvage
You can download a demo copy that will tell you what it can recover
If you want to recover that you must pay for the software then
When you do the recovery, you will need another disk drive to receive the recovered files
Having install a new operating system on the disk after the retformat is going to gradually reduce the amount of data that this software will be able to recover for you

  • Data recover from a hard drive error 301

Can anyone advise me of how to recover data from a hard drive error 301.  I have a pavilion dv7-4177 and i received the hard drive error code 301 two weeks after the warranty expired. I back up my data so I though but when tried to reload that data on a new hard drive it would not take. The damage hard drive will not load the OS now even in safe mode. Is there any way to retrieve this data from that hard drive.

    Hi,
One possible way to try and retrieve your files from a non-booting drive is to follow the process detailed in the link below.  The Ubuntu operating system CD you create can run from the CD alone ( ie it doesn't have to install on the Hard Drive ) and I've often found it to be successful in retrieving data even from a failing Hard Drive.  When you've created the CD, follow the instructions and see if you can back up your files.

  • Recovery to external hard drive instead of disks

How  would I write the recovery data to an external hard drive?

    panbroil wrote:

It's not clear what you are trying to do.  If you are asking about using the Recovery Disk Creator but redirecting to an external hard drive, then the reply is that it is not possible to do.  The recovery program requires writing to an optical disk.
If you are asking how to make a recoverable backup to an external hard drive, then you'll need an additional program like Acronis TrueImage to do this.
If neither of these solutions are correct for the question you had, please give us more to work with.

how do i retrieve data from my external hard drive?

If your hard drive can be detected and shows up as a drive letter in my computer but you can't access your files, then you can recover your data off it with data recovery software easily. This way is the easiest and the most inexpensive way to recover your data.If you bring it to a computer repair shop that is available for data recovery servise, they will cost you $500-1000 or more.Hmm, a lot of money.
I managed to recover data from crashed hard drive with Tenorshare Data Recovery. If needed, you can download it and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether your data can be recovered. It will show you thumbnails for recoverable pictures.
