The Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, or similar software. For best results, place the second drive inside the computer or in a FireWire enclosure and boot the computer from it before removing the internal drive.

  • What is the best priced External Hard Drive, that I can reboot from, for the MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook Pro with 10.9.4. I am looking for a 3T External Hard Drive that I can boot from if my system goes south, that I can afford. Any recommendations?

Don't know the best priced, but the external drives I like best are the OWC, http://www.macsales.com Mercury Elite Pro quad-interface drives.  I have four of the 2 TB drives for my MacBook Pro and iMac and they are terrific.  OWC is a Mac specialist supplier with the best guarantees and service you will find.

    Hi
    Extract structure
The extract structure, data from a DataSource is staged in the source system. The extract structure contains the amount of fields that are offered by an extractor in the source system for the data loading process.
    Extractors
Extractors is a data retrieval mechanisms in the SAP source system. Which can fill the extract structure of a data source with the data from the SAP source system datasets. The extractor may be able to supply data to more fields than exist in the extract structure.
    Hope this helps you

  • Dead hard drive? replace myself?

    Hi folks,
My hard drive was making a funny clicking/vibrating noise while spinning for the past 2 months. I have backed up everything, fortunately, to an external HD. Today, the HD seems to have died. When it spins, it makes a worse clicking/grinding sound, and the iBook freezes and becomes unresponsive (except to reboot, and the boot sequence freezes when the HD starts to spin). Currently, I have my backup external firewire HD attached and I'm actually loading OSX.3 onto it now so that perhaps I can boot from it and get access to files.
Now for the hard stuff. I've been quoted by local Apple Store and another Apple local shop $350-$450 for replacement HD and recovery of files. For another few hundred, I could buy a used PBook or iBook on eBay, which is tempting, but my current iBook is fine except for the HD, so it seems. And I see plenty of quite inexpensive replacement 40-80 GB HD's on eBay for less than $100. Questions are two:
    - is it reasonable to assume HD is dead, and if so,
    - should I buy a replacement and install it myself?
My technical skills: I have installed memory cards into my Lombard PBook, memory into my Dell subnotebook, and on occasion I can use hammer, nails, and drill. I am a doctor, but not a surgeon.
Yes, no, maybe?? Tell me if I'm getting in way over my head.

    Hi Joshua,
Does wen you said it freezes, does it actually freeze or do you get the spinning wheel? Can you move the mouse? I would wait a couple of days before thinking about installing a new hard drive. The reason being, we might find that it isn't necessarily a failing hard drive; it could be something else. You might want to look at Mac OS X v10.3 Tutorials - Troubleshooting a Mac that Won't Start and Knowledge Base Document #106464 on Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier).
You may also want to try reseting the PMU (Knowledge Base Document #14449, which covers Resetting Powerbook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU)). What does it say next to S.M.A.R.T. status (Checking the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard disk (Disk Utility 10.5))?

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • Partition external hard drive-what format do I use

I'm trying to partition an external hard drive by following the instructions in the disk utility help and am confused about which "format" to use. My choices are: Mac OS extended (Journaled), Mac OS Extended, Mac OS Extended (case sensitive, journaled), Mac OS Extended (case sensitive), Unix file system and Free space.
I've looked in the forums and in the disk utility for definitions of these terms and am sorry if its there and I just don't see it.
On a different subject is there any opinion as to whether I should create a partition that should or should not be used for startup? What is the difference and which is better?
    Thank-you very much,
    Margie

Choose Mac OS extended (Journaled) unless you have a specific reason to use another format.

  • If My external hard drive went bad can I use iCloud to still have or access all my ripped music and movies from iTunes without starting over?

Can I have access to all my imported music and movies in iTunes even though my external hard drive went bad with the acutal files, if i purchase iCloud through iTunes.

You say "ripped" music.  That is not stored on iCloud unless you subscribe to Match.  As for iTunes Store purchases:
Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not all media formats are available in all countries (see: iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match Availability by Country - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5085); apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this).  Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones, audiobooks), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
Select the iTunes Store on the left side of iTunes.
Click on Purchased on the right side under Quick Links.
You can re-download your available previous purchases.
Of course if you had a backup of your files you would have been back up adn running iTunes by the time you read all this.

  • Hard drive filling up, can I use external hard drive for my library?

    Hello all!
My hard drive on my Sony laptop only has 30G harddrive, and as I am downloading my Cd collection and buy it tunes videos etc., into my ipod, my computer is slowing down and overloading because of all the other programs I have in there. So far my solution is to delete the videos I have purchased and watched (Series "24") so as not to demand too much of my resourses. I just purchased a seperate 80G hard drive in order to place my photos and other space consuming files there, and wonder how and if I can MOVE my library from my itunes software and place it also onto this small seperate hard drive, so that I can get a few more years out of this laptop? So far I haven't seen if that's possible, just that it can be copied. I want to be able to sync regularly and I don't know if can without re-loading all the data back into the library in my itunes software ON the computer.
    Solutions, anyone?
    HELP!
    Thanks, Flutist Renee

  • Pavilion g6 internal hard drive not working , Can I use WD internal hard drive ?

    I have pavilion g6 series laptop . I don't know RPM .
HP internal hard drive is looking very costly.
Can you tell me whether I can use WD internal hard drive or not . If yes then How much RPM hard drive I need to buy?

    Hi,
We won't concern about RPM, faster (more rpm) is better. The HDD's are much, much, much, much cheaper now. They were more expensive during a flood in Thailand few yours back. Yes, you can use WD HDD for your computer. You can pick one from the following list:

  • External hard drives - what brand do you use

I'm looking to buy an external hard drive, maybe I'm a bit paranoid, but I'm thinking about getting a RAID1 setup. I have a lot of valuable pictures in I-Photo, a lot of music in I-Tunes, and would not be a happy camper if my internal HD fails.
Would you give me some ideas as to the external HD brand/model you use - anybody use a RAID setup for redundancy ?
    Thanks,
    Bob

Hi Bob, I wouldn't go RAID at all, though Raid1 is pretty good you still have problems with RAID, the whole reason they came up with RAID5, RAID10, etc...
I think two independant drives are better than 2 tied together, and there are many options for backups.
Almost more important than the External Drive itself is the Chipset in the External, Oxford being good & Prolific & others not so.
My Books have had far less than glowing reviews for Macs...

If you try LaCie then have a few spare Power Supplies on hand.
I'd stay away from Bus Powered drives & 2.5" drives also, here's some choices, I'd go Firewire & drives with a 5 year warranty over 3 year warranty...

  • HT4848 Is it possible to partition an external hard drive that is already being used for Time Machine backups without it being erased?

I'm want to use my current external hard drive, which I use for Time Machine Backup, as a recovery disk for Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2. From what I have read, the recovery disk assistant will erase all data on the external drive unless it is partitioned. Can I partition my current backup drive without erasing it, even though it is already being used for Time Machine?

It's very simple to test.  Turn off your computer.  Have your time machine backup plugged in.  Hold option and turn it on, keeping option held.  Do you see your time machine drive?  If so, select it and press enter. You'll end up in recovery.  If it works, there you go.  Then just click the apple and restart to get back to your regular desktop.  Then you'll know for when you're ready to do the deed.
    Edit...
I'm not sure if time machine will think it's an entirely different computer, though, when a hard drive changed, making an actual restore not doable.  Either way, you could still reinstall mt lion fresh and then just migrate after, skipping the need for SL.

  • External hard drive format that can be usable for both MBP and TVs?

I recently bought a new MBP and found out I can not copy and paste files to my external hard drive as it appears to be 'Read- Only' because of the format. I then changed the hard drive's format to FAT32, which I was able to write files on it from MBP. However, my TV won't read the hard drive anymore which I really need it to because the whole purpose of the hard drive is for me to download movies from the laptop and watch it on the TV through the external hard drive. I've always done it with my PC tons of times but just really new with the MAC OS systems.
Is there any other format I could try that work for both or any other ways?
I'm using the SeaGate Goflex desk adapter USB 1.5TB and LG TV (not too sure what model).

Check the TV's documentation. If you find that it requires NTFS, install software such as Paragon NTFS on the Mac.
