  • What is best practice for dealing with Engineering Spare Parts?

    Hello All,
I am after some advice regarding the process for handling engineering spare parts in PM. (We run ECC 5)
Our current process is as follows:
All materials are set up as HIBE's
    Each material is batch managed
The Batch field is used for the Bin location
We are now looking to role out PM to a site that has in excess of 50,000 spare parts and want to make sure we use best practice for handling the spare parts. We are now considering using a basic WM setup to handle the movement of parts.
Please can you provide me with some feedback on what you feel the best practice is for dealing with these parts?
We are looking to set up a solution that will us to generate pick lists etc and implment a scanning solution to move parts in and out of stores.
    Regards
    Chris

    Hi,
I hope all the 50000 spare parts are maintained as stock items.
    1. Based on the usage of those spare parts, try to define safety stock & define MRP as "Reorder Point Planning". By this, you can avoid petty cash purchase.
    2. By keeping the spare parts (atleast critical components) in stock, Planned Maintenance as well as unplanned maintenance will not get delayed.
    3. By doing GI based on reservation, qty can be tracked against the order & equipment.
As this question is MM & WM related, they can give better clarity on this.
    Regards,
    Maheswaran.

Appreciate if you could provide any pointers. I think this either mite be related to the code link property of the iview or the PCD path of pages/roles which we do in CRM SPRO.

    2. Where can I find DMS configuration part in SPRO?
    3. I understand that DMS is a unique concept availabe in SAP HR. So how can I link DMS to HCM?
    4. Is SAP Archive link related to DMS ?
    5. Any documents/links related to this kinldy send it across.

    hi
    try with this
SAP DMS - Document Management System
SAP DMS are for storing documents such as CAD drawings, Materials pictures etc.
With the document management system, users will be able to view the documents with ease within their SAP systems.
Installing the SAP DMS requires a little bit of planning on how you want to do it.
You have to give a little thoughts to stuff such as :-
    1.  The total numbers of documents that will be store monthly.
    2.  The average file size of each documents.
    3.  The capacity of your present R/3 system.
    4.  Your present network bandwidth.
    5.   Document Archiving Strategy.
    6.   Backup and Recovery Plan.
Additional purchasing of hardware are required, especially if you have large amount of documents to stored.
With this in mind, you can then decide on how you want to do it.
You can do this in a few ways :-
    1.  Import the documents into the R/3 system.
    2.  Use an external document server.
    3.  Have a dedicated PCs where all the documents are stored.
Most companies that intend to used DMS will opt for Option 2 as they does not want to overstretch the R/3 database.
Options 1 requires you to setup the conversion interface.
The conversion interface allows R/3 to automatically covert your files and import it into the R/3 database.
Here is a simple example of storing documents into your PCs, just to have a feel how the SAP DMS works:-
For those using Citrix, you have to set this at the Citrix Server where the SAPGUI is located.
    Configure SM30 - V_TDWE_C1
Put this command in your autoexec.bat
    SET HOSTNAME=PC1234
    Restart your pc.
You can create/manage your documents in transaction code CV01N / CV02N
Assigning Documents to a Material Master Record
Access a material master record in Create or Change mode, and select Basic Data.
To create links to documents, choose Additional data -> Document data.
The Link to Documents dialog box appears.
Assign one or more documents to the material.
If you do not know what the document number is, you can search for it using the search help or by choosing Find document.
When assigning a document to a material, you have the following options:
    1. Viewing the document by choosing it in the Link to Documents dialog box.
    2. Viewing any originals of the document by positioning the cursor on the document and
choosing Display originals in the Link to Documents dialog box.
To return to the Basic Data screen, choose Continue.
    Save your data.
    all the best

    hi,
    You can try following ....
    For the job SEND_SYSTEM_RELATIONSHIP_TO_SUP
    Program : AI_SC_SEND_SYSTEM_RELATIONSHIP
    1. Up to Support Package 09:
    a) Start transaction SMSY.
    b) Choose Shft+F5.
    c) Select the system named in the message.
    d) Choose F6.
    e) Select the "System Data in SAP Support Portal" tab.
    f) Using the input help, fill the system number field with the correct system.
    g) Save the data.
    2. Up to and including Support Package 08:
    a) Start transaction SOLMAN_CONNECT.
    b) Select the system in question in the ID field and choose the filter pushbutton.
    c) Select the system and select "Create configuration".
    d) Fill the system number field using the input help with the correct system.
    e) For example, select the "BW GUI Connection" service type.
    f) Carry out all of the subsequent steps of the Configuration Assistant until you see the "Finish" pushbutton.
This establishes a unique relationship between your system in the Solution Manager and the system number in the SAP Support Portal. Problems no longer occur with this system when the SEND_SYSTEM_RELATIONSHIP_TO_SUPP job is next run. However, the problem may still exist for other systems (in these cases, you should follow the same steps).
Hope this will help to solve your issue..

  • Capitalization of spare parts

    Hi,
Spare parts are acquired via logistic workflow. At reception, they are entered in inventory. Accounting department verifies on monthly basis the list of spare parts but has to identify which one has to be capitalized.
How could you send spare parts sitting in inventory to asset register? If the spare part is capitalized but need to be replaced/ repaired, how could we change the value of the asset? How could we track the spare part if they are capitalized? How could we follow the spare part as soon as it is capitalized?
Any recommendation on the capitalization of spare parts?
    Thanks
    Sabine

    Hi Anna,
Thanks for your answer. In fact, we try to see if we need to capitalize or not spare parts. I know that you suggested to keep them in inventory .
Here, they try to decide at the beginning of the process if they need to capitalize or not the spare part. There are 2 cases:
case 1: spare part bought at the same time as main asset to which there are related to (= critical spare part) and brought into use at the same time as main asset.
case 2: spare part bought for repair or replacement
I guess that we should capitalize the spare part in the first case. But if we capitalize the spare part, we could not do anymore an inventory management and follow the spare part. This is not very convenient.
In the second case, we need to decide if we are dealing with major spare parts and define some criteria to identify what "major" means (e.g. useful life higher than 1 year)... but this is very difficult to identify.
In the last case, it is more complicate because we probably go through the maintenance order but how do we capitalize then? If the costs are in stock then they can't be also in asset. Does this mean that we need to do some financial adjustments?
    Any idea?
    Thanks
    Sabine

  • MRP design for Service Spare Parts

    Hello,
I am in process of designing the MRP run for service spare parts for construction and mining equipments business. There is a central warehouse and small depots.
Help me out to design following MRP requirements.
    1.     MRP process is expected to consider stocks at all these locations i.e central ware house and depots. Optimization across locations and stock transfers to be considered.
    2.     MRP process is expected to consider open PO requirements.
    3.     MRP process is expected to consider in-house service orders reservations requirements.
    4.     MRP process is expected to consider open sales spare parts order demand from dealers.
    5.     Certain formula base forecast requirements for specific spare part
If SAP standard solution is there or any work around is expected.
    Regards
    Sanjeev Dhavan

    1. MRP process is expected to consider stocks at all these locations i.e central ware house and depots. Optimization across locations and stock transfers to be considered.
    - MRP can be run for a whole plant or single material or MRP area(group together some storage location). I hope your warehouse is a plant so you can run the MRP at your plant(ware house) level.
    2. MRP process is expected to consider open PO requirements.
    - You should use consumption based planning but you need to identify what type of MRP you want to use.
        - reorder point planning     - forecast based planning      - time phased planning
        - in general all the above MRP will consider the open PO / PRs
    3. MRP process is expected to consider in-house service orders reservations requirements.
    -  this is possible by selecting proper MRP type, for ex. if you want to use reorder point planning, then you should use V1(Reorder point planning with external requirements) which includes sales order and manual reservation in net req calculation.
    4. MRP process is expected to consider open sales spare parts order demand from dealers.
    - Refer point 3
    5. Certain formula base forecast requirements for specific spare part
    - do you want to use forecast based MRP? what formula you want to use?

  • Content Management System (CMS) vs Knowledge Management (KM)

    Hi,
What is the difference between CMS and KM?  Is CMS part of KM?  How do you install CMS or KM?  I need to be able to install CMS.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
"CMS" would in the first place only be a generic term that you can call any product that manages content.
At SAP I am aware of the following similar terms:
<b>KM -</b> Java-based CMS, integration framework for 3rd party CMS's and more of SAP NetWeaver, runs in the Portal
<b>CM -</b> The architectural part of KM that deals with basic content management services. With additional services and TREX this combines to KM.
<b>DMS -</b> "Document management system", R/3-based system for management of engineering documents, bases on "KPro" in Web AS ABAP, part of mySAP PLM, integrates into KM via repository manager
<b>KW -</b> KPro-based system for managing SAP-related documentation and training
<b>Content Server - </b>Object storage location for KPro-managed documents (see DMS)
<b>KPro -</b> "Knowledge Provider", deep level very generic set of ABAP methods to manage document attachment objects in an R/3 environment
    Hope that clarifies...

  • Can you please explain about the vehicle management system?

    Hi ,
i want to know about the module (vehicle management system) .please explain any one in details .
    Regards
    Venkata .

    Hi Venkata,
The Vehicle Management system (VMS) is part of SAP IS - Auto. Generally it is said that it is used by importers, however I would rather put it like this – It can be used for an importer or a distributor’s business functions. So if an OEM is also performing a distributor’s business, he can also use VMS and get benefited out of it.
The VMS facilitates to see a Vehicle like a Vehicle in the system.
Following are the few high level features -
It allows to capture all the attributes of a  particular vehicle as an unique object in the system
All the transaction on a vehicle (sales, purchase etc.) can be carried out keeping vehicle as a central object, provides ease of operation to users. All business and technical data of the vehicle is available here.
Strong configuration based vehicle search and vehicle history (transactions) helps in tracking the vehicle easily for any purpose in the distribution chain of OEMà Distributorà Dealerà End Customer.
This is in brief about VMS.
