Default runlevel in Solaris 10

Is it possible to change the default runlevel in Solaris 10 to runlevel 3, so that Solaris 10 boots to and runs in a straight command line? Inittab doesn't seem to control the default runlevel in Solaris 10. Thanks, Kevin.

I don't think this is complete. If you wish to change the default runlevel in which the system starts you'd be using the -d parameter for svcadm so that it will make the specified milestone the default.
However, there are much easier ways.. The service responsible for all of this is svc:/system/svc/restarter, its options/milestone property defines the default milestone and when its absent it defaults to 'all'.
Therefor its probably much easier to simply add a new milestone entry which defines what has to be done. Before SMF the only reason to make a system boot into another runlevel but 3 (say 4) was to make it more easy to start certain services (which were then conveniently put into the right rc.d script). But with SMF you really don't need that anymore; just make a milestone with a corresponding script, make it dependend on the (extra) services you want to start and that's basicly it. The moment your milestone is reached the service(s) are started, and when you disable it stopped.

  • Giving up default gateway in Solaris 10

    Good Morning !!!
    Hi ..
    could you tell me, how can i add default gateway in solaris 10?
    i mean , i wanted give up as follows:
    rute add default 100.110.120.130
    but it does not work !!
    Thanks.

    Could you post the output from what you're doing? This because beside the typo the following command should work when your root.
    route add default 100.110.120.130 Another option is the following command, but then you need to reboot the system afterwards.
    echo "100.110.120.130"  > /etc/defaultrouter

  • Default.properties on Solaris

    On Windows, the iMQ port where the broker is running is stored in the
    config.properties file and the default port is in default.properties but
    how about on Solaris ? Is there an equivalent of default.properties on
    Solaris too ?

    On Solaris, the properties for a broker are stored in:
    /var/imq/instances/brokerName/props/config.properties
    The default properties are in the directory:
    /usr/share/lib/imq/props/broker
    Both the files there are well-commented.
    This is covered in the Administrator's Guide, the chapter entitled
    Starting and Configuring a Broker.

    2) How to SMI Label/Format a disk while OS Installation in Solaris 11.1?
    As we know that ZFS is the default filesystem in Solaris 11.
    We have seen in the Oracle documentation that for rpool below are recommended:
    - A disk that is intended for a ZFS root pool must be created with an SMI label, not an EFI label.
    - Create root pools with slices by using the s* identifier.
    - ZFS applies an EFI label when you create a storage pool with whole disks.
    - In general, you should create a disk slice with the bulk of disk space in slice 0.
    I have seen the solution that using format -e, we change the labelling but all the data will be lost, whats the way to apply a SMI Label/Format on a rpool disks while OS Installation itself.
    Please provide me the steps to SMI Label a disk while installaing Solaris 11.1 OS.

    Oracle recommends below things on rpool: (thats reason wanted to apply SMI Label)

  • Select() function is not working properly in solaris 10.

    Hi ,
    We are facing an issue with select() in Solaris 10. we had written a sample program to this issue.
    Program name :- sel.cpp
    int main()
    struct timeval sleeptime;
    sleeptime.tv_sec = 60;
    printf("1\n");
    select(0,NULL,NULL,NULL,&sleeptime);
    printf("2");
    return 0;
    When i run this program in Solaris 9, its printing 1 and after one minute its printing 2.
    When i run this program on Solaris 10, its printing 1 and 2 without waiting for 60 seconds.
    When i tried to print tv_usec, its printing as 0 in solaris 9 and some garbage values in solaris 10.
    I think because of that the above select function is not working properly in solaris 10.
    Why the tv_usec is not taking 0 as default values in Solaris 10?
    We are using our legacy code for past 20 years. So, before going to do any changes we are trying to find why this happenig like this.
    Thanks a lot.

    It sounds to me that you've been lucky for 20 years then.
    Local POD variables on the stack that aren't explicitly initialized can contain any value. Here's what I see in your app with dbx
    (dbx) run
    Running: sel
    stopped in main at line 9 in file "sel.cpp"
        9      sleeptime.tv_sec = 60;
    (dbx) print sleeptime
    sleeptime = {
        tv_sec  = -4198732
        tv_usec = 0
    }That's on a Solaris 10 SPARC machine. If I try it on a Solaris 10 x86 box then I get
    (dbx) print sleeptime
    sleeptime = {
    tv_sec = -830490588
    tv_usec = 134510556
    and I see the behaviour that you describe.

  • Step by Step Guide to Install Solaris 10 11/06 With Windows XP on x86 PC

    hi everyone
    here is how I fixed my dual boot & internet connectivity failure problems. I'm explaining in detail to help any Solaris newbie (like me) having same problems: ( as I didn't find any REAL Help thru Sun Help Documents / Pages )
    My special thanx to " Phil Brown " ( who helped me alott on this )
    First to get rid of Dell's Diagnostic Partition & System Recovery Partition I re-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition & at installation I made 4 Partitions of my Dell 9150 ( x86 Intel Pentium Dual Core ) 238 GB Hard Drive.
    (1) C: 100 GB for Windows XP ( NTFS )
    (2) D: 80 GB for Solaris 10 ( RAW )
    (3) E: 50 GB for Linux ( RAW , which I haven't installed yet )
    (4) F: 6 GB (RAW)
    (5) G: 2 GB Un-Allocated Space
    Restarted PC after Win XP installation & installed Partition Magic 8 . In PM8 I formatted Solaris partition as FAT 32 (at Solaris installation it changed to Solaris format) & Linux as Linux EXT 3 . Rebooted the PC. I Started Solaris 10 11/06 installation from the DVD I burned from Sun downloads.
    Here's how I installed Solaris 10 11/06 :
    (1) On the next screen after "Loading Stage 2 ... " I selected " Solaris "
    (2) Selected " Solaris Interactive (default) installation
    (3) Hit "enter" to accept proposed Windows configuration screen it displayed
    (4) Selected 0 = English as language (you need to take cursor into white window so you can type 0 into it, otherwise u can't)
    (5) hit NEXT
    (6) Selected "Networked" option
    (7) Selected YES to "Use DHCP for e1000g0 ( Intel Pro/1000 Network Adapter )
    (8) Selected NO to "enable IPv6"
    (9) Selected NO to "enable Kerberos"
    (10) Selected DNS as "Name Service"
    (11) entered " f.root-servers.net " as Domain Name
    (12) Server's IP address : 192.5.5.241 ( you can choose the one that closest to you by visiting http://www.isc.org/index.pl?/ops/f-root/ )
    (13) Search Domain: Left all boxes empty ('coz when I tried to put any IP's into 'em, it generated " SysidgenSyserr " and have to re-start installation )
    (14) Geographic Continent / Country / Region: Americas > U. S. > time zone
    (15) hit NEXT on Date & Time Screen
    (16) Entered password twice
    (17) Selected YES to "enable Remote Services"
    (18) hit CONFIRM
    (19) Clicked NEXT on Solaris installation Welcome screen
    (20) Selected NO to " Reboot Automatically " and YES to eject additional CD/DVDs
    (21) Clicked OK on NOTICE
    (22) Specified CD/DVD as " Media from which you installing Solaris "
    (23) Check ACCEPT & hit next
    (24) Selected "initial install" & hit next
    (25) I choose "Custom Install" > NEXT > North America > and checked both, " English ( U S ) ( en_us) & English ( U S, UTF-8) (en_us.UTF-8) and hit next
    (26) Selected English (US, UTF-8) as initial locale > NEXT
    (27) Selected " Solaris 10 Extra Value Software " > NEXT
    (28) Selected NONE to " Web Start Ready Product Scan Location " > NEXT
    (29) Selected " Entire Group - Default Packages " in Solaris software group screen > NEXT
    (30) Selected " c1do(bootdisk) " > NEXT

    (32) There was a Warning: " A Linux fdisk partition was found on this disk (c1d0), which is the default bootdisk. Having a linux fdisk partition on the same disk as a Solaris fdisk partiton is not supported. Do you want to load the default Lay out ? I choose NO
    (33) It displayed 4 partitions. 1st: " Unknown " 100GB , 2nd: FAT32LBA, this I changed to Solaris by clicking on partition, size 80GB . 3rd: Linux 50GB , 4th: DOSEXTLBA 8GB , hit NEXT
    (34) I choose NO to " Preserve Data Warning " (the 80GB partition)
    (35) Displayed " Lay Out File Systems " screen, c1d0 was highlighted. > NEXT
    (36) On " Ready to Install Screen " it displayed Fdisk partitions: 1st: Unknown "Preserved" , 2nd: FAT32LBA delete, & Solaris add, 3rd: Linux "Preserved" , 4th: DOSEXTLBA "Preserved" >>> hit " Install Now "
    (37) When installation finishes hit " Reboot " & when PC was restarting I ejected DVD manually
    (38) After re-start it displayed 3 options: 1st: Solaris 10 , 2nd: Solaris failsafe , 3rd: Windows , ENTER on Solaris 10
    (39) At sign-in screen, I signed in as, user name: " root " & enterd password (which I typed at installation)
    (40) I choose JAVA Desktop System
    When it was fully up, the Internet was working right away. Restarted again to check Windows. Selected " Windows " at reboot screen & Windows was working just fine.
    It took me few allnighters to figure these out, I hope these will helpful to Solaris newbies like me. Still I can't figure out ... How to install any software (obviously designed for Solaris 10 (x86) ) onto Solaris, but thats a different issue.

    "A Linux fdisk partition was found on this disk (c1d0), which is the default bootdisk. Having a Linux fdisk partition is not supported"
    It might not be supported, but it works fine for me on my thinkpad :-) .
    redhat/solaris/xp.
    You can't just use the linux grub, though, because it won't understand
    solaris 'slices within partitions'. You need to get Solaris to install
    grub itself (in fact, you can't stop it doing so, which is rather unfair),
    and then add in the linux * xp entries to Solaris's /boot/grub/menu.lst
    (== grub.conf) to get it to pick up fedora & xp. Chainloading xp worked
    fine for me. Chainloading RHEL4/5 doesn't, so I had to cat the grub.conf
    from red hat on to the end of solaris's menu.lst. Stick red hat's grub.conf
    on a USB pen or just write it down before putting Solaris on, otherwise you'll
    have to boot linux rescue of a red hat CD in order to get hold of it after
    Solaris's grub takes over.

  • Sun AppServer 9.0 Update 1 on Solaris not supporting form-based auth

    Ok, I installed Appserver 9 on a Solaris box and then started up the default domain1. When I point the browser to http://localhost:4848 I am not pointed to the login page for the admingui, it just bypasses the authentication and I am allowed to perform all admin actions without logging in. I then deployed a custom web application that uses form-based authentication that works correctly on Sun Appserver 8.1. However it behaves the same way as the admingui application (I am not presented with a login page). After setting some of the log levels to FINEST and looking at the logs it appears that when these requests are coming in they are not matching any constraint (but the constraints are defined in the web.xml). Installing Appserver 9 on a win2k box does not have this issue. Has anyone else seen this problem? Is there some security setting that is not turned on by default from the solaris install????

    Ok if anyone is interested I was able to fix my problem. It looks like the issue is the version of java used with Appserver 9 on Solaris. The latest version of java i have on the machine is Java 1.5.0_06, but everytime I try to install the Appserver with this version it hangs at 39% into the installation. The next latest version of Java i have on the machine is 1.5.0_02, so that is the version I was using to install and the install works perfectly. However, after the install the form-based authentication does not work with this version of Java on Solaris.
    They way I fixed this was to modify the asenv.conf file in the Appserver_Install dirrectory to point to the Java 1.5.0_06 installation and started the domain, now the form-based authentication is working as expected.
    I guess my question now is does anyone know why I can't install the server with Java 1.5.0_06? But it looks like I need that version to actually run things correctly.

  • WLS6.1 hanging on Solaris- and SIGQUIT doesn't work

    Hi,
    We are experiencing a problem that looks like a deadlock when our server is under load (using WLS6.1SP2, Solaris 8 and the 1.3.1 JVM supplied with WLS). After processing many requests, the server hangs and CPU usage drops to 0%. Unfortunately the standard means of getting a thread dump (sending a SIGQUIT with kill -3 or Ctrl-\) does nothing. The problem also occurs if WebLogic is running under debug (using
    -Xdebug -Xnoagent -Djava.compiler=none -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,suspend=n,address=5555) but alas the debugger hangs when trying to pause the server after this deadlock). It appears as though the server is not accepting any requests (including administrative requests from the console) but this doesn't seem to be due to thread starvation as CPU usage is 0%.
    The only output we can get is from truss, which seems to indicate no activity at all until the SIGQUIT is received. It seems to register the SIGQUIT but it looks as though it is not being processed.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Kevin.

    We found a solution to this problem, relating to the threading model that the JVM
    uses.
    Have a look at http://java.sun.com/docs/hotspot/threads/threads.html for more
    details.
    The default threading model on Solaris 8 is many-to-many (threads to LWPs) with
    thread-based synchronisation. After playing with various threading models, we
    found that the best was one-to-one with the alternate thread library. This is
    the default provided by Solaris 9, but you can also tell Java to use this with
    older versions of Solaris by putting the following line in your start command
    prior to executing WebLogic:
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/lwp:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    Apologies to anyone who was looking for an answer to this beforehand: I should
    have replied to this newsgroup back in September!

  • Solaris Branded Zones, Unable to reboot/Halt

    Hi People,
    Hoping someone can help. Im running Solaris 10 on a Sun Workstation Ultra 45. I have two disks. One disk has the default install of solaris 10 all updated to the latest patches.The second disk is mounted as /zones and holds each of the zones on ZFS. I have then downloaded and installed successfully Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 and Solaris 10 zones. So I have 3 zones.
    The problem I am facing is I can boot up all 3 zones fine and they work great, however when I halt or reboot either Solaris 8 or solaris 9, they never come back up. I try and zlogin to them and telnet and ssh and they are totally unresponsive and quite literally dont boot. I have tried to pkill -9 -z zonename ; umount /zonesfilesystem; zpool clear and even rebooted the Global zone. Still will not come up. The only way they will boot after being shutdown is if i shutdown the global zones and turn the server off and back on.
    Solaris 10 Zone boots up and down fine with no isses. I have tried this on both UFS and ZFS thinking it might be a file lock issue. Still unable to reboot or halt a zone and bring it back up.
    Any help please :)
    Thanks in advance.

    When they are unable to come back up, what does 'zoneadm list -cv' say? If the state of the zone is "down" or "shutting_down", you can probably benefit from the fix for:
    7038404 outstanding zone references should not cause zone_destroy(2) to hang
    This is available in 147440-05 (sparc) / 147441-05 (x86) or later.

    What would be the best course of action to decrease /export/home and increase /var by 6gb. This is a test box so I'm not concern about the amout of space for /export/home.
    I would prob increase swap as well.
    Thanks

    Your system disk has already been organized. Increasing /var space is not done easily.
    Is /var and /export/home created by SVM?
    Show your df -h and disk partition information.
    If the slices are organized without any free space, you may need to do a re-install with custom layour option.

  • Ssh install on solaris core group installation - startup scripts?

    hi all,
    i have a fresh "core group" installation of solaris 11/06 now up and running.
    I have added the following pkg to get ssh running.
    bash-3.00# pkginfo |grep ssh
    system SUNWsshcu SSH Common, (Usr)
    system SUNWsshdr SSH Server, (Root)
    system SUNWsshdu SSH Server, (Usr)
    system SUNWsshr SSH Client and utilities, (Root)
    system SUNWsshu SSH Client and utilities, (Usr)
    so it is installed. I have manually created ssh_host_keys and I can start and use sshd/sftp -server. However I'm in need to find the best way of starting this up at boot. I have followed a link to Sun Blueprints for open ssh startup scripts.
    http://www.sun.com/blueprints/tools/ > secureshell-tools.tar.Z
    however this relies on prng (psuedo random number generator). my "default installation" of solaris 10 11/06 does not have this installed and ssh works fine, so I am reluctant to go down prng path.
    furthermore searching my "default installation" of solaris 10 11/06 i can not see any ssh startup scripts that I could heist
    please advise best practice

    fixed for now

    since solaris 10, use "svcadm"
    ie
    mybox86# svcadm enable network/ssh:default
    very nice.
