Definitive answer...does Tiger self-maintain or do I need Cocktail etc.?

I just left Windows, (WinMe) after 5 years of suffering, and found Tiger; This is
my first computer that I actually enjoy owning!! I have read tons of conflicting or various opinions from Apple/and Discussion group...an Apple tech told me yesterday to just grab the entire cache folder/username/library/cache and drag to trash yesterday!!
Tiger does some maintenance on a regular schedule early each morning, 3:30
a.m. On Sat. I think Apple said it was 4:30, and early morning on the first day of each month. Is this adequate? I know where to check on "permissions" and look to see if "SMART" is ok. I have owned a Mac since November and this is
my only concern. Thanks for your consideration,
Brian

The only reason to dump cache files is if you are having some sort of problem. The reasoning behind this, as a troubleshooting action, is that the system and programs generate these constantly, therefore there is a greater chance that a cache file can get corrupted by an electronic hiccup and then cause a problem. But cache files help things run faster, so unless there IS a problem there is no reason to get rid of them.
The other sort of file that gets constantly written to is the plist files--the preference files for various parts of the system and programs. Like cache files they can get corrupted and cause a problem, and are automatically recreated, so if you are troubleshooting getting rid of them can sometimes be useful.
A third sort of file that gets constantly written to are log files. I've never heard of one being corrupted, but sometimes they get very bloated. The routine maintenance jobs basically consist of "rotating" these files--which means compressing the old ones and starting a fresh one. If there is actually problem--something constantly writing to a log file and causing your free space to start disappearing--it won't be solved by doing this, just have the effect temporarily minimized. You'll then need to find out what is causing the bloat and fix it. The only really useful thing done is updating the locate database, and that is only useful if you use the locate command in the Terminal. The daily job will also delete various junk files that badly written routines failed to get rid of.
If you want to see what these things do (and when they were last done) you can launch Console from your Utilities folder, click the Log icon in the toolbar, click the disclosure triangle in front of /var/log and then click the entries for daily.out, weekly.out and monthly.out. Personally I run the routines from the Terminal when it occurs to me that I haven't done it in awhile.
An easy way to run the file system consistency check is to restart and hold down the Shift key. The system will automatically run the fsck routine and fix any errors. It also disables third party startup items and a couple of Apple's as well, so it is another excellent troubleshooting step. Then restart normally. You might want to do this periodically--I often do it as a routine before installing an upgrade (if I think about it), as well as running permissions repair at that time.
So here's my maintenance schedule:
1. When I remember to do so I run the UNIX daily, weekly and monthly jobs, this is usually twice a month or so.
2. When there is a system update I do a permissions repair and often a file system consistency check as well.
That's it. OS X does it's own defragging. Safari seems prone to cache problems so I tell it to dump its cache if it seems to be cranky, and occasionally go in and dump the favicon cache myself (select and toss the contents of "/Users/yourname/Library/Safari/Icons").

    No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
    For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

  • Does Tiger need Fax software to send and receive faxes?

    I need an inexpensive way to receive faxes. I will be buying a usb modem, likely the Apple modem. Do I need to also purchase fax software or does Tiger make it possible to send and receive faxes?

    I found out from another query that yes I can send and receive faxes by going to the Print/Fax icon in System Preferences.

  • Does Tiger require ownership (and sharing) of wired printers on a wireless LAN? My G4 (Tiger) is also wired to the LAN, and can access all wired printers through the router. Wireless Macs cannot even find the printers.

    Does Tiger require ownership (and sharing) of wired printers on a wireless LAN? My G4 (Tiger) and all printers are wired to the LAN, and the G4 can access all printers through the router. Additional wireless Macs (Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion) cannot even find the printers. Yet, if the G4 shares the printers, then ALL computers on the LAN can access them. However, this requires the G4 to remain powered. Is there a workaround that would allow me to shut down the G4 and still use the printers?

    Hello BDAqua!
    Well, I am halfway there. Following your steps on the Snow Leopard MBP, the newer printer (a Canon MX860 inkjet) appeared automatically under the "default" icon on the ADD printer window. I used the IP icon with the HP Jetdirect-Socket protocol to find and add the older printer, (an HP 4000N). That required running a configuration page from the printer to locate its IP address. I printed to both printers through this laptop with success!
    I then followed exactly the same procedure with the Mountain Lion MBP. For both installation attempts, I got an error message window: Unable to verify the printer on your network. "192.168.111" may not exist or is unavailable at this time. Would you still like to create the printer? If I click Continue, it creates the icon and name in the printer list. However when I attempt to print from an app. the next message says, 'Printer is unavailable.'
    Why one laptop finds and uses both printers, and the newer laptop does not, just floors me!
    Thank you for your ongoing assistance.

  • Does Tiger for PPC include classic?

    I want to run classic inside of Tiger but I need to know if I need to upgrade from panther, or does Tiger include classic.

    Tiger includes the program that is able to run a Mac OS 9.1 or higher System Folder as Classic. If that Mac OS 9 System Folder is not present, Classic will not load. If you attempt to erase and install your operating system, you will lose that System Folder, and be required to reload it another way.
    Macs of different ages have different capabilities when it comes to Classic. The dates below are when specific models were released as new Macs according to the spec pages:
    http://support.apple.com/specs/
    11/1997-7/2002 The G3 and G4 Macs released during this period (except the original G3/250 Powerbook) can use the 9.2.1 retail installer disc to install Mac OS 9. If they shipped with a version of 9, they can only use a newer retail version of 9 to install 9 for use with the Classic environment. A minimum of 9.1 needs to be installed to use Classic. The article below lists which versions of 9 each Mac shipped with:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
    If you need to upgrade to 9.1 or higher, follow the directions in this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75288
    Also check if the firmware needs to be updated before installing 10.2 or later:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
    8/2002-12/2002 The Macs which shipped new during this period shipped with a restore 9 installer disc and could not use the retail installer disc for Mac OS 9. Call AppleCare if you are missing those discs:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
    To install Classic from the restore discs, follow the directions in this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61802
    867 Mhz Macs and faster Macs that shipped during this period 11/1997-12/2002 can also boot into 9 when Leopard (10.5) is installed, but can't use Classic unless Tiger (10.4) or earlier is installed on a separate bootable hard disc, or partition of the boot hard drive. Pre-Firewire Powermac G4s which shipped during the next time period also have this ability if they were 867 Mhz or faster.
    1/2003-12/2005 The machines which shipped new during this period (except the PowerMac G4 pre-Firewire 800 which could boot into 9) could only use Classic, and thus once upgraded to Leopard can't use Classic anymore. If you kept a separate partition or booted off an external hard drive that had Tiger they could continue to use Classic. Article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61802 still applies for restoring Classic to Tiger and older operating systems on these Macs.
    1/2006 - present Intel Macs which shipped during this time period can't use Classic at all.

  • What's the definitive answer ?

    I have a question which I'm sure has been asked but I cant seem to find it. I have 12" PB G4, 1.5GHz. I have order iLife 08 but in reading the discussion boards I'm not sure it will work. Some say it will ,other say there is a work around for imovie. others say return
    So, here's the questions:
    Will imovie be the only issue?
    If so, Can I still use imovie 06?
    Should I just return it ?
    What's the definitive answer ?
    Thanks

    Sounds like you've seen a few posts on this, but I'll confirm what I know, which does not include a work around for iMovie'08:
    I installed iLife'08 and iWork'08 on three machines last night.
    iMovie'08 would not even try to install on our G-4, 1.25gHz, the line item and check box were always grayed out. iLife'08 did not bother my existing iMovie'04, or '05, and installed the other components fine.
    The G-5 and Intel machines both loaded everything fine.

  • Users of Eclipse - Arch packages or self-maintained?

    I've always used my own self-maintained Eclipse installation (in /home/LinuxProg) since I first started using Eclipse back in my Ubuntu days. Just today I was trying out eclim and had problems getting it working on that install, so I figured I would try out the Arch packages, and they 'just worked'.
    I previously kept my Eclipse separate since it has its own updater and I would sometimes use it from Ubuntu, but I haven't done that in a year now so I figured there was no more advantage to using it the way I had before. So, a question to Eclipse users, how many of you DON'T use the Arch packages?

    I maintain separate Eclipse installations by a simple, free and smart app named Pulse from poweredbypulse.com.
    The advantages of using Pulse are many because it automagically updates everything from the standard environment to every plug-in (small like svn or "big" like pdt,cdt, jdt with no issues), it lets you propagate in just a few minutes a complete set of profiles to many different workstations that will share every option you have chosen from one place, it is cross platform and you can trust Genuitec because they are true Eclipse contributors that will never spam you in any way.
    It's so easy to run multiple Eclipse installations with no binaries duplicates that I have been never looking for distros packages for a couple of years.
    I really think that Pulse should be a must for every Eclipse user who is not interested in becoming an expert of the Eclipse inner details, but just a satisfied and a proficient user of a fully customized/able environment.
    While I appreciate your contribution and suggestion, I think the overall tone of your post sounds just like a marketing video. Seriously, 'you can trust X because Y'?
    In any case, I may look into that once I'm done with my PhD. Thanks.
    Yes, you are probably right, but I am not paid by them at all. They are just good enough at it that I am simply so happy that I wanted to share the experience and give my 2cents tip.
    Edit: Of course, Genuitec would like you to download and buy commercially packed profiles for Java and other languages, but the community free profiles are just nice for my professional use and I have never received any spamming mail from them on the account I had created for that purpose and a year ago I switched my email account to the one I am currently using for all the open source stuff.
    Edit: If you do not pay a sort of yearly subscription (I have never paid) they will not let you quickly search the database that contains what is available and I have sometimes missed a useful plugin such as Eclox for Doxygen, but browsing for myself was enough to find it and add it to my profiles with some other add-ons I would not have otherwise discovered. Eheheh...
    Edit.If you are interested in team development and - in this case - profiles sharing and cutomization depending on the user level, you have to subscribe but this is not needed by a single user like me who is trying to reinvent a new job.

  • I-pod touch checking email (definite answer)

    Sorry to keep bringing this up, but has anybody had succes using the i-pod touch to log into an microsoft outlook web exchange server to check email? I have gotten it to prompt me for user name and password, but it never actually logs onto the web page.
    Does anybody know if this is something that would work with the i-phone using wi-fi?
    I am debating weather or not to take my i-touch back and get the iphone and just not use the phone features. However the extra 8 GB in the i-touch is nice.
    I am also wondering if anybody has a definite answer on this.
    Thanks

  • 6520 randomly resetting or doing a self diagnostic

    My 6520 is always either doing a self diagnostic, resetting or waking up at random times. it was only doing it once in a while, but it seems to be getting more frequent over time. It is set up wireless and use it across multiple devices, some win 7 some win 8. it is working fine on all devices, and never disconnects wirelessly, but when it wakes up, it chimes and resets the print head motor and its beginning to wake me up at night. also note that the printer is set up right next to a new netgear router and i have it all protected with wpa tkip
    Please help.

    Hello buzzkillbajingo. I understand the printer will perform random actions, at random times. The description you provided proves the printer is facing a hardware issue. I'm going to provide some troubleshooting you can attempt.
    First, I would like you to perform a hard reset, on the printer. I will provide instructions on how to perform this task:
    1. While the printer is on, unplug the power cord from the printer, and its current electrical outlet.
    2. Hold down the power button on the printer for 30 seconds, while it is unplugged. This drains all the electricity out of the machine.
    3. Connect the one end of the power cord into the back of the printer.
    4. Connect the other end to a direct wall outlet (not a surge protector or power strip). This will ensure the machine can obtain more electricity, since lack of electricity can generate issues like this.
    5. Now, try to generate a copy.
    If these steps do not resolve the issue, I would install the latest firmware on the printer. I have provided a document on how to update the printer: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c02919168
    Please inform me when you complete these troubleshooting steps, so I know the results.

    Does Tiger have no word document that will open word documents sent to me over e-mail? I know there is a free trial of Word, but I don't want to buy it just to open documents. Is there a word processor program included with my Imac ?

    Depending on what attachments are sent to you, you will need the appropriate application to open it. If by using the example of receiving a Word document, you would either a.)Need to purchase Microsoft Office 2004, or b.)Use a free application such as NeoOffice http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/en/index.php
    NeoOffice will open most Microsoft Office documents.

  • Sending chinese HTML with javamail - is there no definitive answer ?

    I'm using the following code to send a HTML and text e-mail
    (text for people with HTML-challenged email clients). I sent
    2 emails to 2 email addresses which reside on the same server
    - eg. [email protected] and [email protected] - and read the
    emails with the same e-mail client (Eudora) on the same PC.
    The HTML and Chinese displays perfectly when it's sent to one
    of the email addresses ([email protected]) but the HTML and
    Chinese are always corrupt when I send them to the other.
    This is a repeatable error and it has me completely stumped.
         // Example Initial values (drawn from a database) :
         String smtpHost = "mail.mydomain.com";
         String sender = "[email protected]";
         String subject = "Give me strength.... ";
         InternetAddress sender = new InternetAddress("[email protected]");
         InternetAddress receiver = new InternetAddress("[email protected]");
         String txtMsg = "a long text message blah...";
         String htmlMsg = "<h1>Wooo</h1><img src='http://mydomain.com/blink.gif'>";
         String language = "zh-tw" // can also be "en-us" or "zh-cn"
         // CREATE MAIL MESSAGE & HEADERS
         Properties props = System.getProperties();
         props.put("mail.smtp.host", smtpHost);
         Session session = Session.getDefaultInstance(props, null);
         Message msg = new MimeMessage(session);
         msg.setFrom(sender);
         msg.addRecipient(Message.RecipientType.TO, receiver);
         msg.setSubject(subject);
         msg.setSentDate(new Date());
         msg.setHeader("Mime-Version" , "1.0" );
         msg.setHeader("Content-Transfer-Encoding", "quoted-printable");
         // MESSAGE BODY - TEXT & HTML
         MimeMultipart mimeAllContent = new MimeMultipart("alternative");
         MimeBodyPart mimeText = new MimeBodyPart();
         MimeBodyPart mimeHtml = new MimeBodyPart();
         mimeText.setText(textMsg);
         mimeText.setHeader("Mime-Version" , "1.0" );
         mimeText.setHeader("Content-Type" , "text/plain");
         mimeText.addHeader("Content-Type", "charset=UTF-8");
         if (!language.equals("")) {
              mimeText.setHeader("Content-Language", language);
         mimeText.setHeader("Content-Transfer-Encoding", "quoted-printable");
         mimeHtml.setContent(htmlMsg, "text/html");
         mimeHtml.setHeader("Mime-Version" , "1.0" );
         mimeHtml.setHeader("Content-Type" , "text/html");
         mimeHtml.addHeader("Content-Type", "charset=UTF-8");
         if (!language.equals("")) {
              mimeHtml.setHeader("Content-Language", language);
         mimeHtml.setHeader("Content-Transfer-Encoding", "quoted-printable");
         mimeAllContent.addBodyPart(mimeText);
         mimeAllContent.addBodyPart(mimeHtml);
         msg.setContent(mimeAllContent);
         msg.setHeader("Content-Type" , mimeAllContent.getContentType());
         // SEND THE MESSAGE
         msg.saveChanges();
         Transport.send(msg);
         return true;
    Let me repeat - Using the code below, a HTML & Text ("Alternative"
    MimeMultiPart) message is sent, and arrives at the recipient's
    mailbox. When it is sent to one user ([email protected]), it never
    renders properly. When it is sent to another ([email protected]), it's
    OK. The destination server, email client, PC are the same in both
    cases and the only variable is the recipient's email address.
    How can this be ?
    I think I've gone overboard by setting the Content-Transfer-Encoding
    for both the HTML and Text MimeParts as well as the actual Message.
    Could somebody please confirm which parts I should set the Content-
    -Language, Content-Transfer-Encoding and Content-Type b/c I'm
    going in circles at the moment.
    Thanks indeed, to anybody who has experience sending doublebyte
    with Javamail and can help me clear this up once and for all.
    I find it incredible that after 3 years, there is still no
    definitive answer to accomplishing this, and it remains an
    elusive black art.
    Regards,
    chas
    ps. The data being sent is in MySQL not that that matters at all.

    Try adding code to validate submitted email addresses before they go into your database.
    String emailAddress = (from where ever)
    if(emailAddress != null) emailAddress = emailAddress.trim();
    if(emailAddress == null) // skip this address
    // I also check for a list of illegal internet email address characters, as I think the email addresses allowed by Javamail are too lenient.

    He said - Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox.
    I want to know - Will I still have my bookmarks, history, addons, plugins, etc.? I do not know what plugins and such that I had. What about my pinned tabs and my tabs that where open.
    More information - When I try to start Firefox I keep getting the message that I need to restart my computer in order to complete a previous update attempt. I had Sweetpacks on my PC and I do not know where it came from, it took over my home page in Internet Explorer and Ithink caused the issue with Firefox.
    Should I do the clean install or try starting Firefox now.

  • Definitive answer? Touch apps on the Nexus 7

    Hello,
    I've been searching around now for a while but have not come to a definitive conclusion and would hate to waste my money on something that doesnt do the job.
    Some posts on here feature people complaining about the lack of support for the nexus 7, however the following video suggests Photoshop touch works on the device.
    Also, the following article suggests all touch apps work on the Nexus 7:
    http://robertoblake.com/blog/2012/07/google-nexus-7-will-change-graphic-design/
    I would really appreciate it if somebody could please offer up a definitive answer to the compatability of these touch apps on the Nexus 7 and hopefully you can help prevent me from wasting any money :-).
    Many thanks,
    James

    Hi David,
    Thanks for getting back to me.
    Do you know if Adobe would be happy for users to test the other software on their (currently) unsupported devices for the purposes of beta testing?
    It would be nice to see them supported at a later date and I would be happy to trial the software and provide feedback.
    Kind regards,
    James

    I can't find a definite answer anywhere regarding whether or not you need to turn the iPad mini off before charging. So my question is should I turn the iPad mini off or leave it on before charging? Thanks in advance.

    I rarely if ever turn my iPad off. I charge it when the battery is low or at night while I'm sleeping. Even then I close the Smart Cover and let it sleep but I do not turn it off. It doesn't matter when you charge the iPad.
    The most efficient way to charge the iPad is to use the charger that came with it and plug that into a known good wall outlet.
