Delay time putting Mac Mini to sleep manually

I am using an early 2011 Mac Mini running OS 10.6.7, which I have had for a little over a year. A new problem cropped up in the past week. When I put it to sleep manually it takes 2 minutes or more before it actually goes to sleep. I have "wake for network access turned off." The computer goes to sleep automatically at the time set in energy saver without a problem. The manual sleep delay happens whether or not I have applications running or not. What goes?

Sounds like your iMac might have an unfinished task running in the background.
Not sure if > Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode helps or not, but it is worth a once over to see if anything pops.

  • Everytime I put my Mac Mini to Sleep, Finder becomes completely unresponsive.  How do i fix this?

    Hi,
Everytime I put my Mac Mini to Sleep, Finder becomes completely unresponsive.  I've tried several Terminal commands to kill/quit/relaunch it, but nothing seems to work.  Once my Mac has been put to sleep there is nothing I can do to get it back after I have woken it up.  I always have to restart my computer, and even then, I have to hold the power button to shut it down because it will never fully shut down from the restart.  I have a feeling that Finder is still running in the background and not allowing the mac to shut down.  I'd rather not have to reinstall my OS.  Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this problem?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Hi Andrew, what all is connected USB wise?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for Sleep/Wake problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Turning off my HDTV puts my mac mini to sleep and turns off Eye TV

I have a mac mini dual core connected to my Panasonic 26" Viera HDTV via a DVI/HDMI cable. I am using it (amongst other things) as a personal video recorder with the Eye TV 410.
However I find when I turn off the TV it also puts the mini to sleep (even though my energy saver settings say it should never go to sleep). The result of this is that when I finally do get the machine to reawaken by pressing the power button at the back (I have bluetooth mouse and keyboard and the computer doesn't respond when I wiggle these) Eye TV has quit and the programs I had set up to record haven't recorded.
I've not been able to find someone with a similar problem and I'm wondering what I can do. I've previously been using my PowerBook with the TV and the Eye TV and this problem did not occur. I am using Eye TV 2 software.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Hi there,
I had exactly the same problem as you, so you are not alone. I wrote an email to elgato and they were rather unhelpful! "Quit elgato before turning your tv off or just don't turn off your tv"! Thanks for those gems of advice!
I wish I could help you with what I did to get it working as it is now. The only thing I can think it is is that I changed my connection from DVI-HDMI to DVI-VGA. This means that elgato is no longer crashing when I turn my tv off.
Sorry, I know that is not very helpful but that is how it worked for me. Hope you manage to sort it out.

  • Mac mini wont sleep

Hey, just recently, when I tried to put my Mac to sleep, my iTunes locked up and wouldnt sleep. I closed iTunes, this time, before I tried to put the mini to sleep, but now another app locks up and doesnt sleep. Also, after my screen goes into standby by itself, when I try to rewake the monitor after several hours of inactivity, the light on the mini shows that it is infact on and such, but the monitor never responds (stays black), therefore it has somen to do with my Mac. Any advice?
    Thanks!

there is a lot on this forum regarding sleep problems. search away...
with apps freezing you may have other problems. for starters try booting with your system disc, find "disk utility", run "repair disk" and "repair disk permissions".

  • HOW TO PUT THE MINI TO SLEEP

    HEY ALL,
iPod mini 4GB purchased 5-05 (so whatever generation that is)
I have found a way to put my mini to sleep....it still will not show up on FireWire ports, but at least this way it will hold a charge...
Holding down Play/Pause DOES NOT WORK. This may be a glitch in iTunes 7.
    Go to EXTRAS> CLOCK>SLEEP TIMER
You will find it is off if you have updated your iPod. Set it to the desired time (I used 15 min) and the mini will power off after that time.
    Hope this helps

This can't be part of iTunes, it has to be part of the iPod Restore formatter.
Which version of restore did you use? If this true (holding down the button doesn't put it into "sleep" mode), I would want to avoid that version.

  • Aluminum Keyboard won't wake Mac mini from sleep (sometimes)

I just bought the new aluminum keyboard (wired). Its great, and looks amazing next to my mac mini......except it won't wake mac mini from sleep sometimes. When this occurs, I can tap on any key but the machine won't wake up. The only work around I have is to attach my ipod, which wakes the mini. Oddly this only happens sometimes. I can't isolate any other variable which may be influencing this behavior.
I'm running leopard and didn't think I needed to install the 1.2 keyboard software update.
I called Apple support, and they told me the problem is that I'm using a non-apple mouse (I have a microsoft optical wired mouse connected to the keyboard's USB port). I don't believe them as i've used this mouse connected to my previous Apple keyboard for years and never had a problem.
    Can anyone help?

Regrettably, I can't offer a solution to the problem stated in the title. Instead, I experience the same problem.
    Wireless Mighty Mouse circa 2007
    Wireless Apple Keyboard circa 2007
Bluetooth dongle (a bluetooth thingy connected to a USB port)
Things worked fine until an upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard. Following the upgrade there were several mouse related issues. Those were resolved. One issue remains: waking by use of mouse or keyboard.
The setup (Same for keyboard and mouse)
System Preferences --- Bluetooth --- Keyboard Connected --- Keyboard Paired. The "Discoverable" box is checked.
    Digging deeper
System Preferences --- Bluetooth --- Advanced --- "Allow Bluetooth device to wake this computer" --- This option is unchecked and is greyed out, inaccessible. Two of the other options are checked and available: the options about opening the Bluetooth assistant and the one about prompting incoming audio.
I've searched other posts. However, many of the other posts seem to conflate this Wake/Sleep issue with various connection issues. Thus, the advice given is a bit confusing to this amateur. Might one of you experts have a solution to this annoying little problem?
    Thanks for your interest.

  • Audio interface loses connection every time my mac mini goes to sleep

Using M-audio fastrack pro and newest mac mini dual 2.5 on Mountain Lion 10.8.4 Intel core i5.
I have to restart to make it go away, it also just happened when I unplugged my monitor and plugged it back in...... Samsung syncmaster....
Anyone had similar problems with Mountain Lion?

    Hi Mate,
Used to have one of those, it was a real pain for dropping out on me, i don't know if you're aware but they don't support sleep mode.  Meaning that if you were to sleep your mac you need to pull the usb cable out first, and plug it back in when you resume.  If you don't you have restart your machine to have it work again.
And yup, it's a right pain.  Mine was particularly sensitive - it dropped out when i switched my mixer on a few times which concerned me, found it ran much better when connected to AC Power.

  • When I put my iMac to sleep it puts my Mac Mini to sleep as well.

The Mac Mini goes to sleep when the iMac is put to sleep and the Mini will not wake up unless the iMac is awake.  I have made sure that all sharing is off but it did not fix it.   Cannot figure it out!

  • Mac Mini 2011 Sleep of Death

I have a Mac Mini 2011 with Lion factory installed configured with an original Apple Keyboard and a LG - HDMI monitor.
If the Mini goes to sleep either manually using the Apple Menu or based on Settings , it does not wake up !
Any  subsequent attempt to wake the mac by moving the mouse results in either nothing happening  / a system power down.
Restarting the Mac  is then  impossible. The Mini just makes JET engine level fan noise and does not boot.
Only after PMU/SMC resets and starting in Safe Mode ( Command +S when powering ) does the Mini come alive again.  What a nightmare !
My only  solution till now is to put the Sleep settings to "NEVER"
Surely there is a way around this .... sleep of death ???

I have tried to eliminate all issues related to connected periphals first as Apple is really not going to find a solution if it relates to these. I changed the HDMI cable to abrand new expensive cable as a first step. Then I connected only one USB Time Machine Hard Disk 1TB. The PC is now waking out of manually induced sleep. I am not brave enough to remove the "Never Sleep " automatically settings as yet.  Also downloaded a free utility named ONYX to do a system clean. They have a version for both Lion and Snow Leopard - just Google ONYX to see what it does. For now, at least the Mac Mini is working . Hope it lasts.

  • Mac mini has sleep problems

For the past week, my mac mini (which runs SL) did not go to sleep mode at all and when I manually put it to sleep, it wakes up in a couple of minutes. I am running SL for many  months now without any issues and have not installed any new software recently, so I can't figure out what's causing these problems. I am running a couple of programs in the background, namely Air Video server (the problems continue after I have shut it down), Chronosync Scheduler and mobileme sync services. I'm using these programs all the time, without any issues so far. Thanks for any help!

    Hi,
Do any programs running possibly need to access the network?  I know I had to disable "wake for network access."
It's in Preferences - Energy Saver.
    Just a thought..

  • Mavericks Server preventing Mac Mini to sleep

    Hi everyone,
I am using my Mac Mini Server without webhosting (just for file sharing) and I would like it to go to sleep when I am not using it. The idea is to be able to turn it on with WOL when I need it and let it sleep otherwise.
The problem is: it wont go to sleep! I can only put it to sleep manually and even than it wakes up after a while. This is the report I get when I use pmset -g assertions command in the Terminal:

Is there anything I can change or do to make my Mac go to sleep normally?
P.S. I am aware that several people asked this question for previous Mac Os X versions but I didnt find any topic for Maverics (at least none which had the solution in it).

    Hello eklisiarh,
I am having this problem too. My osx server won´t go to sleep as well.
I have gotten down to eliminate alle daemons except the com.apple.collabd. This is very annoying. I need the server to go to sleep.
I have switched everything off. I even killed the process shown below. But it did a respawn (just as I had expected).
Are we the only ones who are thinking about that?
I do not want to go into the config files of that deamon without guidance.

  • G4 Mac mini sporadic sleeps & crashes

My G4 mac mini has had a consistent problem across two OSs. Both in Tiger and now in Leopard my mac seems to kernel panic and shut down. I restart and again if any taxing job is undertaken it again fails. I have included my log files and if anyone is having the same problem or, better, knows a solution it would be greatly appreciated as it drives me crazy.

If you can find the "panic log", it would probably be more helpful than the system.log.
Two possible causes immediately come to mind, since you say the problem occurs with both Tiger and Leopard:
    1) The leading cause of kernel panics is RAM. Has the RAM in this Mini been upgraded since it left the factory? Most RAM problems will not be detected by the Apple Hardware test. The most definitive test is to swap out the RAM. If the problem disappears, then the prior RAM was the cause.
    2) Since you say this occurs during "taxing jobs", then overheating has to be considered. Be sure the mini has free access to room temperature air -- and that it is not sitting on other heat-producing equipment. Even so, its cooling ability may have been compromised over time by a build-up of dust or pet hair inside the Mini or on its vents. It is also possible that the thermal pad between the CPU and the heatsink is breaking down and causing poorer heat transfer.
If the problem is heat-related I would expect the fan to increase in speed and loudness before the crash. Are you hearing this?

  • TS4185 Face Time in Mac Mini

When I turn on Face Time in my Mac Mini with 10.7.5, it works fine except when I try to put it in landscape mode in the View menu.  The command is there but in non-functional light gray.  I have a Samsung monitor and logitech cam which work fine with Skype.   Is there any way to activate the "landscape" command?

    "FaceTime
Video calls require a built-in FaceTime camera, an iSight camera (built in or external), a USB video class (UVC) camera, or a FireWire DV camcorder; and a 128-Kbps upstream and downstream Internet connection. Making HD video calls requires a built-in FaceTime HD camera and a 1-Mbps upstream and downstream Internet connection. Receiving HD video calls requires a supported Intel-based Mac."

  • Problems to connect with VNC to headless mac mini after sleep mode

    Hallo,
I've a Mac Mini (late 2009) setup with Lion Server. I want to use it without mouse/keyboard/monitor attached. Since I want to safe power ( green IT ;-) ), I would like to use sleep mode.
First thing I've learned is, that Lion Server prevents the mini to go to sleep after an idel time as set in power saving.
The only thing that works, is setting up a shedule with sleep / wakeup times.
When I start the mini, everything works great. I can connect via VNC. The Mini goes to sleep at the scheduled time and wakes up again as expected.
From this time on, things begin to get strange:
I can connect using VNC, but all i get is a grey screen with a moving cursor. So VNC is working, but there is no screen available on the Mini. Same if I use thightVNC from a Windwos PC. Get a grey screen.
Further the system does NOT go to sleep at scheduled times any longer.
I was able to track down the problem to the missing monitor: If the Mini wakes up without a monitor connected, I seems to wait to get the right resolution or what ever. All servives are working, SSH is fine even VNC works, but shows only a grey screen.
I've been playing with attaching / detaching a monitor. Sometimes I got:
    - Boot with monitor
    - connect with VNC, see login screen
    - send Mini to sleep
    - disconnect monitor
    - wakeup Mini
    - VNC reconnects, showing grey screen
    - plug in monitor and wait until login screen appears on the monitor
    - VNC switches from grey to login screen
The only way I can save some energy is a sheduled shutdown / restart. So headless works, but not after waking up from sleep.
Any hint or solutions for this ?
    Thanks
    Marc

  • Mac mini server sleep mode

I set up a Mac mini this weekend using a secondary  hdmi connection to my tv to be used as a media center and a central location for home sharing iTunes (etc.).  I set the computer and display sleep settings to "never", so as to always be able to connect with my iTunes account via remote or sonos  However, I am still having to sign in my password on the wake screen if enough time lapses.  Am I missing something?  Is the MM able to stay permanently awake?
