Delete Key Functionality

According to everything I have read, the keyboard shortcut for sending a file or folder to the trash is Cmd-Delete. This does not work on my computer. The delete key functions as expected within applications, but does not seem to do anything in the Finder. I've tried every combination of Cmd, Option, Control, and Shift with the Delete key, but it doesn't work.
Any ideas?

Backspace deletes the previous character and the delete button deletes the next character.

  • Delete key function reset required

The delete key in Safari always returned to the previous page browsed. Now, for some reason, it only functions as a regular delete key and no longer moves back a page. This happened for, seemingly, no reason, I didn't reset anything. Any ideas how to reset the key so it becomes the "page-back" key it should be? I just hate having to move the arrow up to the corner all the time!
I've done the obvious, reboots etc.
    Thanks.

The delete key (called backspace on a PC) deletes to the left. If you want to delete to the right, hold down the function key (fn on the lower left corner) and delete.

  • Why can't Apple implement a proper delete key function?

..... by making Shift+ Backspace delete data in front of the insertion point. What on earth is stopping you????

"stopping you????" - who? Apple aren't here, and none of the Apple users here have the ability to add such a function.
No doubt Apple could if they thought there was enough demand for such a function. You can tell Apple that's what you want here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

  • Space Bar & Delete Key Not Functioning Properly in Safari/Chrome

I have Googled extensively on this problem to no avail. I'm hoping the Apple Community faithful can help.
I recently had the logic board on my work Mac Pro crash, and updated to a new Mac Pro (Snow Leo). The local Apple Store was of course able to tranfer all my settings/info to the new machine, and so far everything is humming right along with no issues...except for something VERY strange. Ever since getting the new Mac Pro, typing in Safari and Chrome is very screwed up...as far as I can tell only the spacebar and delete key functions. In Safari, hitting the spacebar while typing functions like hitting the spacebar on a webpage, jumping down on the page. The delete key functions like I'm hitting the back button in the browser. This appears to be happening in Chrome as well, but it can't handle it at all and crashes instantly upon hitting either of those keys. Strange thing is, Firefox is working perfectly.
I have deleted preference files and repaired permissions and neither of those helped. I'm lost here guys. Anyone have any insight?
    Thanks as always,
    Jason

Sorry to hear, I would not have let anyone transfer settings.
    Easy to do yourself.
I would have kept the old system.
And then you would be using a clean vanilla OS.
So what I would jdo now is a clean install on one of your hard drifves and see if that rules out issues.
USB cables, extensions, hubs, keybaord is a hub also, can all do mischief, even kernel panic.
Permissions? No. Repair the hard drive, Yes, maybe even with something more robust than Apple First Aid.
And not just prefs, a lot of issues reside with application cacvhe files and folders.
Cloning a system, repair8ing, and booting is good maintenance.
A clean install and update should take under an houjr.
While new Mac Pro should run 10.6.8, it is possible that it would have come or shipped with Lion at this point.

It's a new machine - and the Thunderbolt Display is meant to work with it. You need to just make an appointment at your local Apple Store and have them fix whatever is wrong.
If you like, you could always try a SMC reset and a PRAM/NVRAM reset to see if either of those will get your keyboard back in working order...

  • Delete key lack of functionality

Im running a Macbook pro with VM fusion
when running windows software the lack of a real delete key is really irittating
i know i can use back space + FN and then click to conifrm ....but agggg
As the full size macs have a full keyboard i dont see why we have this lack of funcanality
it cant just be a lack of space as they have given us 3 buttons to control the speaker.
is it possible to mapp a key for a single hit delete ? pref working on both mac os and windows?

I haven't tried using Smart Playlist as a filtering option yet. Thanks for the suggestion, though. Regardless, it's still not as intuitive as going directly to the menu and filters. It's quite annoying and reminiscent of using a Microsoft product because I'd have to do some geeky rule-setting just to do something that was previously very easy.
If anyone has a third-party suggestion, I'd really appreciate knowing about it. In the meantime, I hope the Apple folks realize what a blunder this change has become.

  • My delete key is not working properly

    I have a late 2010 MacBook Air that is running OS X 10.9.3 .
Lately I have noticed that my delete key is now working as a backspace key.
This is super annoying and I have tried googling the problem, but I haven't found a solution yet.
Also, my top row of keys (volume, brightness, etc,) are not working unless I hold down the fn key.
    Please help me fix this!

    Hello unicornisland01,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For the issue that you cannot use your function keys without holding the Fn key on the keyboard, please disable the option in your Keyboard system preferences to "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys."

As far as your delete key, first see if the computer is recognizing the key press by bringing up the keyboard viewer.

  • Windows compatibility; Delete key, view, Office for Mac and  Hassels

    Dear Friends
I liked the style of the Mac powerbook, and after years of happy use of a Samsung notebook, I decided to take the plunge and buy a Mac. I amlo liked the idea of contributing to diversiy and not putting all my bucks in Gates's basket! People assured me there would be no compatibility problems bwteeen Office for PC and Office for Mac. So I moved from PC to Mac, but have had lots of problems. I have a powerbook 12". My main issues are that:
    1. Word and Powerpoint for Mac do not always convert properly when I take my files to work where I have to use PC. I find editing in powerpoint for Mac less easy than PPT for windows. Before an important presentation at an international conference recenly, the file I worked on on my Mac came out all funny when I loaded it onto the windows laptop that was already set up. I lost a good five minutes ******* around beore an international audience. Someitmes formatting in Word for Mac jumps and highlights and bold and bullet points go all srtrange or are lost when I take the file to work.
    2. The keyboard of the Mac is frustrating. I usually delete rightward; to do this on a Mac I have to hold down Fn and then delete, i.e. two finger operation. I always screw up since I am so used to the delete key on my PC and my brain gets in a twist. Is there a way I can change this?
    3. The power book is quite heavy (a simple moan as I travle a lot).
    4. Word, PPT and internet pages do not cover the whole screen, just the left half to three quarters, with a strip of unused screen on the right. I have been unable to make word for Mac ect cover the whole screen, so I always have to adjust the view size and then half the text is cut off. I would like to see the whole screen used. This is frustrating as the Mac has a kind of grainy screen.
    Any suggestions?
    Chris

    1. For problems related to Microsoft Office you should post your questions to Microsoft's own Mac discussions:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/community/community.aspx?pid=newsgroups
    2. If you want to "forward-delete" on a Mac without hitting the function key, then you'll have to purchase a full size Apple USB keyboard.
    3. Sorry. Can't help with that one. Maybe you should have bough a ligther 15" Powerbook.
    4. Again, sorry, but that's not a bug, it's a learning curve. Longtime Windows users seem to be more often than not used to working with applications and windows that cover the whole screen. Mac users generally don't. Just drag the windows over to the right or click the green maximize button at the top left of each window.

  • Wireless keyboard spacebar & delete key

wireless keyboard spacebar & delete key are locked/do not work. Any suggestions?

    Hello "BDAqua".
.. I'm experiencing the same problem.
... and, where checking, with clicking on both my spacebar and delete function keys, along with in my own case, additionally, my ["/'] key, ... in a Text Edit document, .. each, does in fact work.
What does this tell me in fact. ?
    — Typing this, part and part, on both my main keyboard, together along with a "USB" plug-in.
    — This on a 2009 "iMac", running Mac OS X v.10.6.8.
    Appreciate your time.

  • ITunes 10.4 and Delete Key

Has anyone noticed this? Before iTunes 10.4 you were able to just highlight an artist or album under the column browser and press delete and it would delete it. It seems not to work now. Am I the only one that has this issue? Doesn't seem to work under library or any of my devices.

I have also noticed this.  Before, the delete key could be used to remove an artist or album from a playlist by selecting it from the browser window.  This no longer works, and the menu item Edit >> Delete must be used.  In addition, cmd-Delete would delete the artist or album from the playlist and library, with the option to move the tracks to the trash.  This was an easy way to manage playlist content, and it is not clear why this function was removed.  I would really like to get this back.

  • Delete planning function in plan workbook

I had one query about how the deletion function should be used in plan workbook. in the plan workbook, the user would like to be able to delete the selected line / combination from plan workbook and plan cube. The options what I come up with is :
    1. use macro to get the selected line in workbook and transfer the value to delete planning function (will be executed by clicking the button in workbook).
    2. create another sheet, and require the user to enter the combination for which they want to delete and then get it deleted by clicking the button (delete planning fucntion will be triggered).
Could you please let me know if there is any better solution for this? And if would like to go with option 1, where I could get the sample or sample macro code?
    many thanks
    Jonathan

    Hi, Jonathan
Maybe will be enough just make the key figure equal to zero and then save this value without any macros?
