Delete or insert frames in an AVI file

Hello,
Is there any way to insert or delete frames in an aVI video, without copying the part you want in another file ?

I don't think this is possible. The only way I know to do it is to read the images from one AVI file and write the ones you want to a new AVI file.

Utility that makes jpg files with same name as avi file

I would like to have my avi files catalogued in Photoshop elements 2.0 as I do with my photos - tagging etc.
but I do not want to include the avi files in my photoshop catalogue since when backing all photos all clips would be included = to many GB ( I already back up the avis separately)
So what I want is an easy way to automatically convert a frame from an avi file and save it with the same name as the avi.jpg - so I can import that to Phel and tag it.
Any one who knows of such an utility?

Are you aware that the Photoshop Elements Editor has a function that will create a still photo from a frame of a video? Look at File > Import > Frame from Video in the Editor workspace.
And I think that Premiere Elements 2 may also have a function for capturing a single frame and saving as a photo file. (I don't have Prem Elem 2 available at the moment to verify that it is present in v2.) I believe that it was in Prem Elem 3 that I used this function.
However, I don't think that either the Photoshop Elements or the Premiere Elements functions satisfy your request that it be automatic. I think that you would need to invoke that command for each video clip and then choose which frame of the video.

Frontrow movie covers and avi-files problems

I have a problem with the movie covers in Fontrow.
I have placed every avi-file in a separate catalogue, and named the catalogue after the movie. I have also placed the movie cover in the same catalogue(preview.jpg). And when I scroll down the list of movie covers in Frontrow everything looks ok... But when I scroll back up again, the movie covers are changed to the first frame of the movie
To get back to the covers I must re-start Frontrow,and everythins looks ok, but as soon as I scroll back up again Im back to the first frame of the movie.
Is there something I can do to have Frontrow ignoring the first frame in the avi-file and always show the preview.jpg??

I'm experiencing simular behaviour.
Frontrow alternates (5 sec) between "preview.jpg" and the "movie.avi" file.
Did you manage to find a solution / workaround?

Mute Audio Track of Embedded .avi File

Using iDVD, I created a slideshow with many pictures and .avi files. Because I'm using a background soundtrack, I would like to mute/delete the audio tracks of the .avi files embedded in the slideshow. Is this possible? If so, how?

you'd need to use iMovie. i prefer to build slide shows in iMovie6 as it's easier to use use for "more advanced editing". if you have iLife 08 you can dl iMovie 6 here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html.

Delete or insert a series of frames in a video

All the videos on CS 6 video editing show how to trim the ends off a video but they don't show how to cut a sequence of frames from within the video. I might also like to copy a series of frames from one video and insert them at a point in the middle of another video.
Could someone direct me to a tutorial or writeup to do video editing which includes cutting and inserting frames?

As C.Pfaffenbichler points out, the Clip on the Timeline is but a representation of the "master Clip," and is called an Instance of that Clip. What you see on the Timeline is but a series of proxies, of data copied from the Imported Video Clip. Other than as the display on the Timeline, they do not really exist anywhere. It is not until one Exports the Timeline, that the program follows the links to the original "msaster" files, and extracts the data, shown on the Timeline, to Transcode the Exported file.
Now, as he also pointed out, you can have any number of those Instances, and they can be altered, via their In & Out Points, to display different portions of that original file, as many different times, as needed.
If you click+drag on the Tail of a Clip, you are effectively changing it Out Point. If you click+drag on the Head, you are effectively changing the In Point.
Say that you wish to "cut out" a middle portion of a Clip. Just drag two Instances of that Clip to the Timeline, and click+drag on the Tail, to set the Out Point of the first to where you want your "Cut" to be. Click+drag on the Head of the second, to the point that you wish the Clip to begin again.
In Adobe Premiere Pro (the full-featured video editing program, or NLE), there are many ways to Cut Clips on the Timeline. I will not go into all of those, as I do not work with Video in PS, and there might be differences, and limitations - many NLE features might not exist in PS. However, you might explore PS a bit, as they might. One way in PrPro is to use the Razor Tool (shown as Scissors in PrElements), to Cut the Clip. Then, on can Select the area that was Cut, and Delete it. One can also use the modifier keys in that Deletion, to determine what happens, or does not happen, to Clips to the right on the Timeline, i.e. one can Delete that portion of the Clip, and leave a gap, or one can Delete that portion, and close the gap, causing everything to the right to close up. Even in PrPro, one has not touched the original material, just the Instance of that, via the proxy that we see on the Timeline. Nothing has really been done yet - until Export.

Playing inserted avi files in Adobe Acrobat 9 or later

A user has inserted avi files into Adobe and it always worked up to version 8.1.
Any version later than that, the avi files will not play anymore.
Is there any way to make them play or will all his files need converted to another source?
Converting them all to a different format would be quite the task as there are many videos involved.

Reading frames in avi files

When reading large AVI files, I get an error when trying to read frame 870 or higher:
Error -1074395967 occurred at IMAQ AVI2 Read Frame
Possible reason(s):
IMAQ Vision: (Hex 0xBFF604C1) Error reading AVI frame
Is this a limitation of the system? I have the problem even when using the AVI read example.

I have to disagree. I do not use old functions. The test program is very simple (see the picture). But video contains over 60,000 images (640x480, 8-bit grayscale, no compression). This example hangs on image 3474.

I have just recently gone from QT Pro 6.5.2 to QT Pro 7, mainly because of the HD support.
I have a dual boot system with QT 7 on Windows 2000, and QT 6 on Windows 98SE.
I am having problems playing uncompressed AVI files in the QT 7 player, apparently if the frame size is large (in the example case 688 x 516).
Sometimes I just get "error 108 unknown error" pop up when I try to load the file. Sometimes the file loads but will not play except in short bursts of movement every now and again as it moves along the timeline. Sometimes the file plays, but with one or more broad black lines across the image!
All the problem files play perfectly in QT 6.5.2, but will not play in QT 7, which should surely play them better, not worse!
Can anyone make any suggestion as to what's happening?
I've uninstalled and reinstalled QT 7, which made no difference. I'm sure I don't need any extra codecs, as QT has always played RAW AVIs without anything extra before.

In authorware .avi files are jumping (when paused) to one frame ahead on mouseover.

Dear All,
I had prepared the CBT in a Authorware application (version 7.02) and published it.
The .avi files are playing well in my system (OS=Win XP) and same CBT file in some of the Win XP systems it is not playing well.
i,e. when the movie is playing and I click on the pause button the movie.avi is paused, but the real problem is persisting when I bring my cursor on the different navigation buttons (mouseover) then the movie is jumping to one (1) frame, and if I scroll the text samething is happening the movie is heading forward one frame ahead. But when I click on Play button the movie is playing from the place where it has been paused.
I tried to check in the Virtual Machine and the CBT is working fine, whereas in the upgraded WinXP systems the CBT is giving the problems.
I tried to resolve the problem along with System Administrator (they were saying that the Authorware Software need to give some patch files.)
Please HELP me out with the patch files I need to upload along with the CBT system.
As I tried to copy all the xtra's into the XTRA folder but still the problem persists.
Please let me know what to do.

There are no patches for Authorware that will change the way video plays. As far as I know there are no patches for Authorware beyond 7.0.2. You have the most current version. You could try renaming the file to .wmv which will change the extension that would be used from a7vfw32.xmo to a7wmp32.xmo. The a7vfw32 is used for avi files but a7wmp32.xmo uses the Windows Media Player in the background to run the file. If this doesn't work are you able to try different movie formats?

Last Christmas my wife deleted a major movie from our camera. I tried several Mac programs, but had no luck. I then took the SD card to an old windows box, and i found two or three free programs that were able to find the lost AVI. PC Inspector was the best of the bunch. http://www.pcinspector.de/Sites/smart_recovery/info.htm?language=2. (After all, the SD cards are usually formated in MS-DOS Fat 32..)
I now currently own Data Rescue II, DiskWarrior, and TechTool Pro (great buy with MacUpdate's MacBundle). I recently had to recover some lost images, and the truth is that PC Inspector was still the best solution.

JMF: How to play an avi file NOT in a Frame...is this possible?

Trying to move avi files from iPad - already deleted from my camera so not saved anywhere else

i stupidly imported movies from my camera directly onto my iPad and then deleted them from my camera. So now the AVI files are on my iPad but I can't view them on the device. And all of the apps I tried seem to use itunes to "locate" the files. This is not an option as I imported them straight to the iPad. iPad wont let me email these files to anywhere as I guess they are just not recognised. Can't access them via iCloud etc. Is there any way I can move these files from my iPad to a usable source?

They're probably also too big to e-mail. Video files are normally huge and e-mails often have a 10-25 meg per message limit. I have a 3 minute video that's 300 megs.
Have you looked to something like dropbox? Upload them there, download them to your computer? You'll need the dropbox app but it should work.
Also, do you have a PC? have you tried using windows explorer? If the videos are in your camera roll (not sure if they will be since you imported them) all you need to do is plug your iPad into a PC, ignore the open iTunes part and use 'my computer' and windows explorer to gain access to your iPad. Go to 'my computer' see if you can see your ipad, double cllick on it, you'll see a DCIM folder. Inside that will be a myriad of folders created by the iPad. My suggestion would be to just drag everything over then go through it and see if your AVI's are in there.

Hi,
I've created the example of how to do it with media player ActiveX control. You just need to know the FPS of your movie to run it.
BUT it works not with all AVI files. I tested it with MPEG4 files and for some of them everything was OK, but for files created with DivX Codec this VI doesn't work. I think this is because of some compression methods included in different codecs.

AVI files delete video component

Hi... New problem. Pretty significant as it brings my current project to a stand still. I capture video files of my screen with "Debut". It is a trial version but I don't think that has anything to do with it. I get great video clips from it, one of which is attached. They are AVI files. When I import to Elements there is no video component, just the audio. It makes them an audio file in Elements.... Hmmm....

At this point, not sure what that conversion program is, but check your project preset choice and make sure that you render the Timeline by pressing the Enter Key of the computer main keyboard to get the best possible view of the Timeline content...you could also just press the Render button above the Timeline. But if you have no colored line or a green line over the Timeline content, no rendering of the Timeline is possible. The rendering is to get the best possible preview of the Timeline AND non colored line or green line over the content means you already have the best possible preview.
