Deleted files aren't in trash, yet haven't deleted either, after targetmod

Hmmm, I connected a Powerbook G3 running 10.4.8 to a MBP via target disc mode over firewire.
I deleted 20gb of files from the G3 drive, but didn't choose empty trash. Then I made the mistake of powering down the G3 before ejecting its icon from the MBP. The MBP complained about bad device removal.
Now the G3 boots fine, but the 20gb of free space that should be there (from the deleted files) isn't showing up, and the trash can is empty. Also, it won't mount on the MBP if I try target disc mode again. I repaired permissions...
Any tips?
Cheers!
B

If one drive works and the other doesn't that points the finger at the errant drive. They are cheap, replace it. To check formatting right click it in Finder and choose Get Info and look for Format type. Finally do you eject it when removing it or do you just pull it out of the USB connection?

  • Trash makes delete sound, no error messages, but files aren't deleted

    Hi,
After solving my Trash problem with an undeletable file, I've now got another one.
When I go to empty Trash I get the small pop-up window asking if I'm sure I want to remove all the files. I click [OK] and the Mac makes the crunchy delete noise. BUT the Trash icon doesn't go back to the empty state, and, if I open the Trash window, the files are still there.
The same happens if I use Secure Delete.
I CAN delete files if I use a program like Trash It! or go back to the Terminal and use sudo to rm the files.
I've checked file permissions on the Trash and on the whole disk - nothing is amiss. I've verified the disk - it's okay. I've also used Tech Tool to scan the disk - no problems.
I created a second account and tried to use Trash there, it seems to work properly. So I'm guessing there is something wrong with one of the settings on my own user account, but I've no idea which one.
Has anyone else seen this problem before, and, is there a solution?
    Many thanks,
    Mike.

    Hi mj
Thanks for the response. The problem's still there. Here's what happened:
    mike$ sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash
    Password:
    rm: /Users/mike/.Trash: Directory not empty
Which is odd, from my UNIX days long ago it should have just demolished those files.
I used Trash It! to empty Trash (worked fine), then went back to the Terminal.
    sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash
    rm: /Users/mike/.Trash: Directory not empty
Which is odd - it didn't prompt me for a password the second time round. Should it?
    mike$ cd .Trash
    mike$ ls -al
    total 0
    drwx------ 3 mike mike 102 Mar 26 21:30 .
    drwxrwxrwx 23 mike mike 884 Mar 26 19:35 ..
So ls thinks the directory is empty.
    I'm now VERY confused.

  • Some Finder Sounds Aren't Working (Trash File and Move File)?

Last night I noticed that *some of the finder sounds* aren't working (trashing and moving a file/folder) on my mac mini. The rest of the finder sounds seem unaffected (emptying the trash, removing an icon from the dock). I tried some solutions online with limited success.
    Odd things that are happening:
    1) After a reboot, the first time I delete a file or move a folder, the *monitor resets itself*. Kinda like when you change the resolution. My TV loses the feed for a sec and quickly reestablishes it. After this happens, no finder sounds for moving and trashing
    2) I heard some people were having this same problem because of coreaudiod.plist files (Library/Preferences/Audio. When I copy the com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist to the desktop these finder sounds return, but just for this file. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10465859
    3) I noticed these problems after I started using the Kanex Mini DisplayPort Adapter To HDMI 1080p Video w/ Digital Audio. http://kanexlive.com/products/item.aspx?id=3495 But, I tried switching back to the old setup of a basic minidvd to hdmi and a rca y cable and it made no difference.
    4) I also completely did a fresh install and everything worked fine until late in the process after I did a reboot (see point 1). Is it a third party software problem? I installed the HippoRemoteVNC that allows me to take control of the computer with the iphone. I also have installed Plex, Boxee, XBMC, Perian codecs, Hulu desktop, Quicktime 7, and Transmission.
    System Specs:
    Computer: Mac Mini (Late 2009) - 2.26Ghz, 2GB RAM, 10.6.1
    Monitor: Panasonic TH-42PZ700U 42-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV
Video/Audio Connection: Kanex Mini DisplayPort Adapter To HDMI 1080p Video w/ Digital Audio
    Any thoughts? Thanks!!

Go to your /Applications/Utilities folder and run the Audio MIDI Setup application.
Confirm settings there match your expectations.

How do you delete [empty] a single file or folder from "Trash"?
Can you "securely delete" just 1 item?

A dangerous and incorrect shell command has been posted in this thread.
NEVER empty the Trash in the shell (Terminal.) NEVER put anything in the Trash unless you intend to delete it immediately. If you do put something in the Trash and change your mind about deleting it, move it out or use the Put Back contextual menu item. Then empty the remaining items in the Trash as usual.

If you have been backing up on Timemachine.
All you need to do is enter time machine... Then the rest is obvious.
Find the iTunes folder and hit 'Restor'.
If not the only way to get all your iTunes music back is to enter iTunes Store.
On the right hand side you should see 'Purchased'.
Click 'purchased' and there you have it.

  • Does Any one can indicate me how to delete recovered files found on the trash can?

I´ll appreciate very much your help indicating me the best way to delete recovered files found on the trash can.

The Getinfo pane has several sections. Next to the top is "General". At the bottom of that section, under the row of colored dots is a checkbox,  [√] Locked (and not checked means not locked).

Thank you Csound1, ok I guess I did manage to delete it but now when I copy new mp3 files they come as mpeg and iCoud won't accept them? Why? Do I have to convert them all now or can I set it somewhere to take them as mp3's. Appreciate the help. Have a great day! Cheers Steve

  • I deleted my files and emptied the trash. can i get the files back?

I deleted my files and emptied the trash. Can I get my files back?

    Maybe...
If you have a removable battery, remove the battery and the power.
If not, hold down the power button until the screen goes back and you are forced to restart the Mac entirely from the power button (do not respond to any shut down window.
Either way, files may reappear in the trash, or where they were located.
If not, you'll probably need a data recovery program*:

  • I emptied my iPhoto trash but it tells me there are over 300 photos in my trash yet I can't find them and the trash looks empty?

After problems with iPhotos I emptied my iPhoto trash but it tells me there are still over 300 photos in the trash yet it looks empty and I can't find apparently still existing photos. How can I make the number go and tells me my trash is on zero?

    First ry the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If the above doesn't help continue with  the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • ITunes no longers asks "Do you want to keep the original file or move to trash?" - Can this be fixed?

I'm not sure if this was a recent update in Mavericks, but when I used to delete items from iTunes it would ask something along the lines of:
Do you want to keep the original file or move to trash?
Now I no longer get this, instead iTunes asks:
Are you sure you want to delete the selected song from your iTunes library?
After which, if you choose the option "Delete Song", you get no option to keep the original file, it just straight up deletes if from my library and hard drive. Does anyone know if there is a way around this? For whatever reason, I want to be able to keep the original file on my Mac, without keeping it in my iTunes library.
I've tried resetting dialogue warning, and this hasn't made a difference.
    Thanks!

  • Unable to export photos, original file was emptied in Trash and cannot recover.

Photo files are still in Lightroom, but I accidentally deleted and emptied the Trash with the original photo files. So now, as I try to export the photos, it is saying photos are offline or missing. I cannot recover the original file location because the trash was emptied. How can I still export the photos in Lightroom, it's a wedding that I HAVE to be able to export?!

If the file is deleted, you restore it from your camera card; or
If the file is deleted, you restore the photo from your backups.
If you have no backups, well I can't understand why anyone would not have backups of important photos. You might want to consider developing a strategy where all your files are backed up as soon as possible after the photos are copied from camera card to computer.
You can recover the previews from Lightroom, but these are usually small size and lower-quality versions of your photos, probably not suitable for printing. Use this plug-in to recover the previews: robcole.com - PreviewExporter
You might also try recovering the deleted files from your computer's hard disk and/or camera card, using something known as an "undelete utility", one of which is Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download
By the way, your photos are never stored in Lightroom, they are/were stored on your hard disk.

Try deleting the iPod Photo Cache from the nominated folder that you have set up to sync photos to the devices.
