  • Deleted files from Time Capsule by mistake. How can i recover them?

I was using DiskTracker to organize the contents of Time Capsule. I deleted some folders from within DiskTracker unaware that this would delete files from Time Capsule itself.
I have several recovery software but none of them is able to see Time Capsule, as it is connected through my Lan. I have a lot of valuable data and i would appreciate any suggestion or help on recovering these folders. Please note that i have not written or deleted any files since the accident.

I have the same issue and am about to make another post ... Have you head anything or gotten any tips?

  • Anyone still up? I just purchased from the itunes store for the first time, and don't know how to get them downloaded to my ipod.

Sigh.....really late and I want to go to sleep, but I just purchased some Itunes online for the first time, and I don't know how to download them to my ipod. I've never done it before, and it shouldn't be rocket science, but I can't find anything that tells me where to go to download my songs. It said something about check purchases, but I can't even find that screen.  I connected my ipod to the computer, and now it says CONNECTED...EJECT BEFORE DISCONNECTING. My BF set up the acct when he bought my ipod as a gift, and as I bought these songs for a special weekend I have planned I can't ask him how to do it.  HELP!  For some reason the password I always use is not recognized for my account... and since I can't get anyone from itunes without a proper log-in I'm at the mercy of all of you more versed in tech and itunes than I.  Is anyone still up that can help me out?

It should keep asking for the password, because it's trying to check for purchases... As soon as you login, it will see you have pending downloads and create the downloads section on the left below Purchases under the Store section. Then it will start the music downloads there, as they will be listed one below the other.
You could just try to check your account balance or view your account and that will trigger a password request too. You can just click on that and say that now iTunes keeps asking for the password and ask him to help you with that. Trick would be to interrupt him so that he carries on with another task after, so he doesn't notice the download. Or you carry on with email or browsing which you were "busy" with when iTunes interrupted you for the password (stupid iTunes)

  • Deleting a file in Time Capsule!

    Hi,
I bought my Time Capsule a few months ago and set it up with Windows XP Pro. I liked the idea as I could back up all my data but at the same time I can use it as a wireless router. TC worked great with Win XP Pro without any problems. However, a month ago, I updated my Windows laptop with a new MacBook Pro and set up TM with my TC. For couple of weeks it worked fine and it was backing up my files nicely.
Now, the problem is: After many TM backups I wanted to get rid of some files in my TC which was taking so much space and wasn't really needed. I located those unwanted files in to the Trash and emptied. The function seemed working fine but the problem is that the space which those files were taking are still allocated and no space is open after deletion. To be sure I tried to add and delete different files. Anything I add/backup takes space, but TC space is still allocated even after I empty the Trash.
Does anyone have a solution to this as all my TC space is getting allocated?

I access the Time Capsule by clicking on the Macintosh HD icon which is located on the Desktop, then choose My Time Capsule from the left pane of the screen under the Shared options. I could see all my manual back-up files and Time Machine back-up files. So, what I do is to drag and drop the file to the Trash and the system is asking for my confirmation to delete. Then I go to Trash and click on Empty, it takes a moment (depends on the size of the file) and the screen dialog shows that the file is being deleted. So I don't go to Finder and search for the file name, I locate the file myself...
I tried this on a few files manually by backing them up in to the TC and deleting them. All those files copied to the TC without any effort, however, when I delete them they get deleted but the space is not cleaned... Any other ideas to this problem?
As I referenced in my previous post, you should stop removing files this way. It may corrupt the backup and make it unreadable/unusable. You should use the Time Machine interface to remove files from the backups per my suggestions previously.
Also, I think that Apple should bring out a new firmware update for Time Capsule and Time Machine with an advanced optimization option, so the user could choose what to backup... Not everybody wants to backup every single program or file automatically, if I get a such choice I would make selections...
Well there is an option in the Time Machine preferences to exclude items from backing up.

  • My Vista system crashed due to a corrupted windows file. When I reformatted C:/ & reloaded firefox & tbird, my bookmarks were gone. I have an image of the drive , but I don't know how to recover them and get the data back where I can access it.

Vista system crashed due to a corrupted system file. The C drive was reformatted, and windows reloaded, along with the rest of my programs.
Before the drive was reformatted, an image was made of it on a USB drive to save all the data. Now I need to know how to get the Bookmarks back for Firefox, and the Address Book back for Thunderbird.
    Thanks

Thanks for the quick response. It worked very well, for both Firefox and Tbird.
One hitch, until I remembered: those are all hidden files, in hidden folders. I had a devil of a time finding the "roaming" folder, until I found out how to unhide everything. In years past, I used DOS for that kind of thing. Explorer is much less user-friendly. Now that I know how to do it, it's simple.
    Thanks again for the guidance

  • HT4191 I accidently deleted (I think because I can't find it anymore) a list of "songs I like" from my notes on my Iphone. I don't know how to recover them from my Icloud. Can someone help me?

I accidently either misplaced or deleted something from my NOTES on my IPhone 4s. I want to restore it. Can someone help me do that?

If you were using iCloud, did you have Notes turned on for syncing? If so, then it would be there. If not, then see if your AOL account has a notes folder. Outlook is for the computer and you would have to have a setting in iTunes for you to be syncing to that.

  • Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files but still have them on the TC for future reference..

Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files on iMac 20inch but still have them on the TC for future reference..eg some movies on iTunes. I want to directly save them on the drive so I can delete them from iTunes and gain some storage. (Ps on iMac 20 inch (it's almost full - 320 GB) when I enter time machine, a tab comes up on finder which reads "Time Machine backups" it's able to be ejected like a disc or a connected device. On the iMac 20 inch, I dragged some files onto there as if using it like a hard drive. Is this the correct method? Then I went to my 27inch iMac and saw the "Time Machine Backups" hoping to see the files I dragged from the 20inch iMac. But the files were not there except a folder that said "Backups.backupdb". Can someone help me?

It's not a good idea to use a network disk for both Time Machine backups and other things.  By design Time Machine will eventually consume all the space on its output disk, which will then cause problem for your other files.  I'd store those other files on an external disk connected to the Time Capsule.  The problem with that is that Time Machine will only back up files that are local to your Mac.  That means that you'll only have one copy of the files on or attached to your Time Capsule.
By the way, you've been misled by poor field labeling on this forum into typing a large part of your message into the field intended for the subject.  In the future just type a short summary of your post into that field and type the whole message into the field below that.

  • I am receiving a notification that says that I am running out of storage space. I backed up time mating to an external hard drive. Can I delete some files to make room?

I am receiving notifications that I am running out of storage space. I backed up my mac book using an external and time machine. Can I delete some files to make room?
    If so,
When I want to restore from my time machine, can I pick and choose, say certain songs, photos or documents?

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive. You can also use the Time Machine application to selectively remove files, but that may be ineffective if you have to free up GBs of space.

  • Deleting files on laptop = deleted files on time capsule?

My Mac Book Pro has a 250G hard drive and my time capsule has a 500G hard drive. My laptop's hard drive is almost full, and I was wondering if I deleted some files from my laptop, would time capsule still keep them? I know it means only one copy therefore not truly "backed-up" but I would only delete less important files, such as old documents from school that I would like to keep on the time capsule but wouldn't be too upset if lost. Considering that my time capsule is twice as large as my laptop's hard drive, I would like to keep some files there and be able to delete them off my laptop to make more room on my laptop. Can this be done, or will deleting the files on my laptop automatically cause those files to be deleted on the time capsule the next time it backs-up? Thank you for your time!

    matt2125 wrote:
So its is my understanding that time capsule will not start deleting old back-ups until its full and needs to make space for new backups?
Not entirely. It routinely "thins" backups according to the schedule on the Preferences window. The first backup of the day is kept for at least a month; all others are deleted after 24 hours. After a month, it keeps one per week.
So if you delete something that's only been on your Mac for a few hours, the backup may be gone in as little as 24 hours; if it was there for less than a week, the backup may be gone after a month.
Plus, there are many, many threads in this and the Time Machine forums where Time Machine had to do a very large or full backup unexpectedly, and had to delete many old backups to make room.
If you value your files, don't do that -- you're playing with fire.
Your best bet is to get a larger internal HD, so there's room for everything.
Second best is, get an external HD for the "overflow," and let Time Machine back up both your internal HD and the "overflow" drive.
Third best is to "archive" some data, to CDs/DVDs or a portable external HD. If you use CDs or DVDs, make two copies, and store at least one in a dry place out of the sun (and one off-site, such as your safe deposit box). Every year or so, read them back in and re-copy them, as they don't last forever (especially the --cheap-- inexpensive ones).

  • Drive no longer being used by time machine: delete some files?

Tried unlocking and allowing myself to read and write.  Nope.  Tried holding down the option key.  Nope.
This drive is no longer being used by time machine and I want to delete some files on it.
Is there a way to do it without wiping the entire drive?

It wasnt a dedicated backup and  there's other material on it that I need to keep.
That's a problem (as you've discovered).  Time Machine works best if it has it's own, exclusive partition.   See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #3 for details.
Aha!  Just found THIS. I'll post if it works. http://www.celiamania.com/wordpress/?p=1038
That will let you delete individual backups, or all backups of selected items.
If you don't have room to copy the "other" stuff elsewhere while you erase the disk, you can delete the Backups.backupdb folder.  Emptying the trash will take a very long time, and may give you permissions and/or locked file problems.  If so, see #E6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Recuperating deleted files in Time Capsule

Hi everybody! I would like to ask some help... I deleted some files stored in my Time Capsule. Now, I need to recover it... I am trying to use Data Rescue II but I have a problem... this software (and others of the same kind) doesn't recognize the Time Capsule as a hard disk... even I use usb or ethernet connection.
    Somebody, please, help me!!!
    Thank's
    GBrock

Unfortunately, as with many utility programs, Data Rescue can't work on Network Attached Storage devices (NAS). They need direct access to the disk. Your only option is to remove the drive, install it in a USB/Firewire enclosure, and then perform the recovery. Sorry.

  • Restore deleted files from time capsule. how???

    Hi all,
by mistake I deleted some important files in Time Capsule. Does it exist the way how to restore it?

You cannot restore files without direct access to the disk and a disk restore utility. That means opening the TC.. removing the hard disk and connecting it directly to a computer.
