Deleting a .inprogress file

So, one day Time Machine was taking hours to backup and I thought it was messed up...(turned out in the end it was just totally reorganizing like everything) Since I thought that particular backup was messed up I went and browsed my backup, then deleted a file called "2007-12-15-201737.inProgress" However, now when I try to empty my trash it takes a ridiculously long time to PREPARE to empty, and when I try to delete it with Terminal using rm -R it just sort of freezes so it seems. I even went on root and browsed to my user accounts .Trash file to try and delete it using roots absolute privelages, but it wasn't in .Trash...
Does anyone know how to get RID of this file?

Yeah umm...still looking for an answer to this, besides secure emptying trash if possible?

• Time Machine won't allow inProgress file (or any other backup) to be deleted

iMac early 2009 OS X 10.9.5
CCC reported an error with a file (bad sector?) but before I attempted to replace it I found I was unable to re-boot iMac. I have successfully restored from Time Machine but TM will not now undertake further back ups and the external USB drive holding TM can neither be completely verified nor repaired. Interestningly I have been able to restore even though I can't write new back ups to TM.
I have extracted most of my documents etc and as SMART Utility reports my hard drive as failing (6 re-allocated sectors and 1 event), I thought I'd try an re-format the iMac  drive before I decide whether to replace the iMac hard drive or the iMac itself. I didn't realise that restoring from a TM back up didn't resolve a bad sector issue and that I need to re-format the iMac drive to sort it. But I'd like to have a more reliable back up before attempting this (and before even re-installing the OS) in case there are issues. I tried moving the TM drive so I could re-format that drive first and get it properly functioning, but it moves some files for a day and then various file transfer/access errors prevent completion of the copy. I thought maybe the InProgress file might be the issue but I can't delete it so can't check.
So:
1/ Why do various web pages and Pondini suggest I can simply delete the inProgress file whereas my system says I cannot delete it? What am I missing? What steps do I need to take to achieve this outside of Terminal which is not recommended?
2/ Can I make a new TM back up from scratch on another external drive and , if I have bad sectors yet to be cured, will this be useful?

!/ Right click doesn't produce a delete option in the menu and when I simply drag it to the trash I get a yellow triangle window which says, 'The Item ".....InProgress" can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted.'
2/ I have a TM back up. My iPhoto & iTunes are on a separate external and this is backed up with TM. Both are separately backed up with CCC. Oh and I occasionally drag and copy important files to another drive.
Thus far I have not lost data but what may well be a failing hard drive is making life difficult. Daily kernel panic re-boots, TM can restore but not make new back ups nor be verified or repaired etc etc

• Recover files from .Inprogress file

I ran a back up with time machine before sending my macbook for repair. After recieving my newly installed mac software on my macbook, I tried to recover my previous backup files and install it on my macbook. However, I could not recover the file and I can see a folder which was .inprogress. I then clicked 'show package contents' and went through each of the files to look for my aperture library. When I managed to find it, the file size of the library was 42.31 GB and I proceeded to copy the library to my desktop. After copying, the library file size shrinked to just 1.02 GB. when I opened the library in aperture, the pictures were all blank. Is there a proper way to recover the aperture library as I have alot of photos stored in there and I hope not to lose it all.
Thanks.

would be incredibly grateful for an answer to this...
i did a back up in november before i went away for two months. along the way my internal HD started failing, and in the melee of trying to grab files before it went down, i plugged in the ext HD with time machine on it. the backup failed doing this, and now the entire backup is a .inprogress file, and i can't seem to transfer the files in any way. i also don't want to delete the .inprogress file because i assume it will delete the entirety of the 500GB contents :/
to compound this, the backup is also case sensitive whereas my new internal one isn't... what to do what to do??!

• HT1526 I'm trying to delete files from the trash and an .InProgress file in Time Machine that cannot be moved to the trash. I cannot unmount the TM disk either.  If I use the chflags -R nouchg  command, I get a "Resource busy" message. Any suggestions?

I've got one or maybe two problems.  Time Machine routinely crashes and there is a file in the TM folder that is an .InProgress file at the end of successful backups. Can't delete it, even using various sudo commands in Terminal.  These come back with a "Resource busy" message.
Similarly, there is a Microsoft Office alias in my trash that will not delete, again including various delete or Terminal commands.  Also "Resource busy"
I can't reformat the TM volume since it cannot unmount and it also cannot unmount the whole disk, which contains some other backup files I'd rather keep.
Any suggestions?
Mike

I'm not sure I can be very helpful since I was doing a lot of things and ultimately the problems went away.  But one thing that definitely seemed to help was to shut down, restart, do something, shut down again and repeat.  So with a clean start, try to move the file to the trash.  If that works, shut down restart and look to see if it is still in the trash.  Empty the trash. Shut down if it appears to empty and then restart.  It seemed sometimes that the computer was doing what I wanted then something was overriding this and restoring.  The shutdowns immedately after I could do something but before it engaged an override operation seemed to keep this from happening.
Sorry to not have more to offer but...

• Time Machine repeatedly creating .inProgress files

I've been using TM with an external USB 2 drive for some months now, but as of last night, the drive icon wasn't turning to the green TM icon.
I've reselected the drive in TM prefs, which temporarily sorts the problem, but as soon as I disconnect and re-attach the drive, the icon remains orange.
I've also noticed that approx 5 seconds before the actual backup, TM creates an .inProgress file. Each subsequent backup deletes the existing .inProgress, but creates a new one, again, just a few seconds before the actual backup.
Strangely, the .inProgress file is EXACTLY THE SAME SIZE as the immediately following backup created 5 seconds later.
Anyone know why this is happening?
TIA,
Si.

Given that the files have not been touched since August 2009
You don't know that for sure. Some process somewhere apparently has done something.
what are the criteria for files to be backup candidates?
OSX keeps a hidden +File System Event Store+ (log) on each disk. It's not a list of every file that was changed (that would get very large very quickly), but each directory (folder) that had anything inside it changed. Various other processes (such as Spotlight and Time Machine) can interrogate this, then examine the contents to determine what was changed inside the folder.
That's how, for example, moving a file from one folder to another doesn't change the file's +date modified,+ but Time Machine still knows that it needs to be backed-up.
The contents of the log aren't kept forever, of course; the older items are periodically purged. If you do an OSX update, for example, so many things are changed that the log is overwhelmed. In that case, Time Machine will do a "deep traversal," comparing every directory on your system to the backups. This will also happen in some other circumstances, where TM can't be sure the Event Store is correct and matches TM's records.

• Adobe XMP Files not deleted with Raw Files in ACR

I am using Photoshop CS3 on a Windows XP platform. My camera raw files are mostly kept on a Windows 2003 file server, which has a gigabit connection to my workstation. However, I have the same problems when using PS CS3 on my Windows XP laptop.
I take many hundreds of 'technical' photographs using an Olympus E1 and Canon G9 cameras. I usually bracket the exposures on the E1, specially when photographing white painted yachts, and then rate and select the images that I want in ACR 4.1.1. Unwanted images are deleted at this time.
The problem I am having is that the associated *.xmp files are not always deleted with the camera raw files, with the result that I now have literally thousands of these 'orphaned' files cluttering up the server. The only options I have are to delete the files manually, which is a pain, or to leave them on the server, wasting unnecessary space.
I have the same issue with Canon and Nikon raw files, so this problem is not specific to Olympus files.
This is a long standing problem, and I would be grateful if anyone has any answers?
If any Adobe programmers are watching, it would be handy if you could provide a simple utility to delete orphaned *.xmp files, or at least compress them into some kind of archive.
Thanks,
Nigel.
As far as Photoshop and ACR go, ALL raw files are treated as read-only.
Your original raw files remain untouched, no matter what you do to them.
Any adjustments you make to a raw file are kept only as metadata (flags, if you will) in that XMP side-car file. Every time you want to re-open that raw image file, ACR will reach for the XMP file and apply the adjustments automatically, transparently.
That is not quite correct. Camera RAW files can be permanently deleted from within Adobe Camera Raw. The problem with ACR 4.1 to 4.4 4 was that the XMP files were left behind. This now seems to have been rectified in the latest version (ACR 4.5).
Thank you Adobe!

• HT3842 Does iTunes store the original music file and copy it into a separate folder? If i delete the original file from finder will it remove it from my iTunes library?

Hi, on my last PC when transferring music to my new MacBook Pro i noticed i had about 6 duplicated of each song in every album i took hours in removing them.
I Just wondered Does iTunes store the original music file and then copy it into a separate folder?
If i delete the original file from finder will it remove it from my iTunes library or vice versa. I didnt want to lose any music like i have some how managed to on my old computer.
Or should i keep both files of it in the Music folder and also iTunes library folder?
Which is best ?

DrewPowell wrote:

It does both at the same time.
When you add files to iTunes, it copies them into /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/ folder. The original file remains where it was.
You can drag a file to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.
This will add to iTunes and move it to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/.
I keep a shortcut of this folder on my desktop then simply drag files to the shortcut to add to iTunes.
Then there are no "extra" files around.

• Firefox does not delete the .part file from my download folder after a successful download

First off, I'm on a MacBook Pro, running 10.6.4 and FF3.6.12
I've recently noticed that on occasion Firefox does not seem to delete the .part file associated with a successful download. The .part file (with a name consisting of a string of random characters followed by a .part extension) is visible in my Download folder stack, although not visible in the actual folder view. I cannot drag this file from the stack to the trash.
The real problem stems from the fact that this seems to create a directory error on my hard drive. Were I to run Disk Utility (which I will have to do... again!), it would return with an error saying something like "incorrect block length", requiring me to boot up from my install disk and repair the drive.
Is this maybe a bug? Is there something I might be doing wrong? Could an extension like AdBlock be messing up my downloads?

It seems that FireFox leaves those partial download files if for any reason they get interrupted. It's possible to resume the download through various uninteresting means, but if you're like me, it gets filled up with files that I intentionally did not complete downloading.
If you're terminal-savvy, you can set up a script that cleans up old .part files. Here's what I've set in my crontab:
0 * * * * /usr/bin/find ~/Downloads/*.part -atime +1 -exec rm {} \; &> /dev/null
It will delete any files in my downloads folder that are at least 1 day old.
To install this in your crontab, launch terminal and type "crontab -e"
This will bring up a text editor, probably vi. You'll see a bunch of ~'s down the left side. Type "i" to go into "insert" mode. The bottom left will say "-- INSERT --"
Copy and paste (or type) the line of code I have above.
Hit enter just to make sure you have a newline at the end.
Hit "Escape" to exit the insert mode.
Hit Shift-Z Shift-Z (that's Shift-Z twice) to exit the editor.
You should see a status message "crontab: installing new crontab"
If you type "crontab -l" you should see your newly installed crontab.
At the top of the next hour, any .part files that are more than a day old should be deleted, and this should continue forever.

hi experts,
We have written start routine to get the storage location text and sending to File located at Application server through OPEN HUB.
here is the code written in the Transformations
In the global section
Text for 0STOR_LOC
DATA: l_0stor_loc_text TYPE HASHED TABLE OF /bi0/tstor_loc
              WITH UNIQUE KEY stor_loc.
        DATA: l_0stor_loc_text_wa TYPE /bi0/tstor_loc.
and in the code to get the text
" Populate the lookup table for 0STOR_LOC
        *SELECT * from /BI0/TSTOR_LOC*
into CORRESPONDING FIELDS OF table L_0STOR_LOC_TEXT
FOR ALL ENTRIES IN SOURCE_PACKAGE WHERE
                  STOR_LOC = SOURCE_PACKAGE-STOR_LOC.
im sure there is problem with the Routine only. i think i need to change the code if so please provide me the modified one.
thanks

• Error Deleting/Archiving processed files

Hi all,
I'm working with a File (xml) to Idoc scenario. I have configured Sender File Channel to read files and after that deleting . SAP XI can read the files (xml files) and send to my SAP R/3 system but I in communication channel monitoring I get a message "Could not delete file 'p:.xml' after processing".
I have tried with archiving and I get a similar error, but in this case it makes the archiving twice (I get 2 files in the archiving directory) and it doesn´t delete the original file from the reading directory, so SAP XI is ever reading and archiving.
Does anyone know any solution?
Thanks.

Hi Antonio,
can you check if those files have <b>read only</b> attributes?
if so you cannot delete them from the directory ? (or archive )

• How do I enable opening firefox from two different computers sharing the same home directory without having to delete a lock file (linux).

I just don't want to have to delete a lock file - which has a purpose - in order to use firefox simultaneously from two locations on the network - where the home directory, i.e. .mozilla directory - is located

You need to use two separate profiles if you want to have two Firefox instances open at the same time.
