Deleting Hard Drive from Mac Book

How do I delete he Hard Drive from Mac Book? If I go to Disk Utilities and deleting, everything is light grey and I cannot chose deleting. Does anyone know about this? Thank you!

I have a Mac Book Pro from the end of 2012 with Mavericks 10.9.1. I did not get a starting DVD or CD when I bough it. Now I want to give it to someone else and wipe the Hard Drive of course. WIth an IPhone, or IPad I did this and I thought that I also did it with a former Mac Book. But now I have not a clue how this can work and also didn´t find really something helpful in the internet. It seems I shall or can start it from the Internet and wipe the Harddrive?
THank you for the help.

What kind of hard drive?  If it's an external USB hard drive, just plug it in to a USB port.  It will mount automatically.

  • Can I format an IDE Hard Drive from Mac Pro?

    I use a mid - 2012 Mac Pro; run Mavericks OS X 10.9.2.
    1. Can an IDE hard drive (using an external drive) be formatted to 10.9.2, from my Mac Pro using Mavericks? (the IDE hard drive is new/unformatted).
    2. Once formatted to 10.9.2, can I reformat the IDE hard drive to Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8, from my Mac Pro using Mavericks?
    3. If so, would should I do to accomplish Question # 2 above?

The version of the OS that is running  is not relevant to formatting the drive. When you format a drive in any OS, you should select "Mac OS extended journaled." (That is, unless you plan to share the drive with a Windows computer.) Formatted this way, the drive can be used with any version of Mac OS.
You do not have to reformat the drive each time you connect it with a different OS.

  • How to transfer my ITunes library from External Hard Drive to Mac Book Pro

I recently had an issue with my Mac Book(OS X Yosemite)  Had to take it to the store and they fixed it (replaced graphics mother board or something like that) Before that  I backed up the whole laptop on an external hard drive. When I connect the external hard drive I can open all my files, not sure how to transfer it, I see the External hard drive and can drag it but where do i drag it because on my Mac Book I can't  find Music. Should I drag it to the desktop and then drag it to the music when I disconnect the external ? Thanks

Choose Home from the Finder's Go menu, double-click the Music item, and drag it there.

  • Just installed new hard drive in mac book pro 15", when trying to boot OSX from original disk I still get a folder with a question mark in it. How can I reinstall the OS?

Can't seem to get my mac book to boot from the CD after installing new hard drive.
I keep holding down "c" while restarting the machine with the disk in but it just keeps ejecting the disk and giving me a folder with a question mark.

If your on 10.5 with a Intel Mac, I think Apple has jinxed the firmware so you can't boot from the 10.5 disk anymore.
So far several people, myself included, can't boot from a 10.5 OS X disk on a Intel Mac.
Your going to have to buy a 10.6.3 Snow Leopard retail disk, it's wayyy better than 10.5 anyway, faster and most stable even better than Lion. Have to buy iLife though as it doesn't come on the 10.6.3 retail disks, only free with grey disks.

  • How do i delete or rename files on my external hard drive from mac OSX 10.8.3

    hi
i am trying to delete some files off of my external hard drive and rename some stuff but my mac dose not let me
i have been on all the macbook pro forums and none of the explained makes any sence to me .... has any one got an idea of what i do to simply rename and delete folder through this computer
    cheers A

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • Installed New Hard Drive in Mac Book

    Please help.
I installed a new Hard Drive in my Mac Book as my old one is bad. I am trying to install Leopard. I have reached the screen to select a destination and there is nothing I can pick from in the window.
Can someone help with the next step, please.

    Hi Sumo,
Have you already formatted your new hard drive using Disk Utility? Be sure to format as Mac OS Extended as you'll be fine. That may be why you're not able to pick a drive to install Leopard.
After formatting the drive then you should be able to progress to installing Leopard onto the drive. From there just follow the directions.
    Good luck.

  • Reformatting an external hard drive from mac to pc

i have a 320GB simple tech external hard drive that i used for my mac book pro. My mac book pro broke down completely so i bought an Asus laptop which runs Windows 7. I go to plug in the external hard drive, however i cant access it. It does show up under devices and printers but i cant open it in anyway. The only option i get is to eject it. is there any way that i can get it so that my new laptop can read it ?

i have the same issue, but when I right click on the partion, the option to assign a drive letter is grey'd out.  i do not see a disk format either, it is blank in that section (FileSystem).
What can I do?  i have Windows XP
Hey I had the exact same problem. I was using my external hard drive on a MacBook and wanted to format it so that it would work on XP but when I opened Disk Management all the options were greyed out. Here's how I solved the problem:
    1. Connect your external hard drive to your mac
    2. Open Disk Utility (command+F and type 'disk utility')
    3. Click the drive you want to format in the left hand pannel
    4. Click the 'partition' tab
    5. Select under Volume Scheme '1 partition'
    6. Under Volume Information, under format select 'MS- DOS (FAT)'
    7. Click 'Apply'
The disk should now be formatted in FAT32 which is compatible with Windows XP. After completing those steps I connect the hard drive to my PC and I was able to read and write in the volume. Hope this helps!

  • Best way to transfer everything on new hard drive for mac book pro

Hi have a mid-2009 macbook pro with 4 GB ram and 250 GB hard drive, which is full now.  I just bought 8 GB RAM to speed it up and a new 1 TB hard drive.  I am running latest Lion (that I downloaded from mac app store - I have the original install DVD for Snow leopard).  What would be the best and cleanest way to transfer everything (OSX, applications, data, files, user preferences, passwords, etc from the old hard drive to the new one)^
1- I heard I can hook the new hard drive via USB and  do a clean install of my Snow leopard DVD, then update to Lion via mac app store.  Then how do I transfer everything else?
2- I also heard about carbon copy cloner, but somewhere it says there is a file in Lion that this will not copy.
    Anybody have any helpfull answers?
    thanks
    Naniners

My suggestion would be to use Migration Assistant. This program you have in your Utilities folder and once you hook up your old Hard Drive to the new computer via USB or Target Disk mode, it will pretty much direct you on how to do the whole process. If you have any other questions, let me know.

  • Problems swapping hard drive on mac book pro

Is there a way to safely loosen the screws on the bracket holding the hard drive in place on a mac book pro 17 inch? I've got one loose, but the other one simply won't budge and the head is starting to strip. the amount of downward force I'm having to exert to try to get it to move seems excessive to the point of dangerous to me. i'm using a Philips 00 screwdriver which is the correct tool, I believe, but I just  cannot shift it. given that Apple say this is a user replaceable part, there must be an easy wy to do it, but all I can see me doing is more damage and being stuck with a captive screw that no one can move. Any tips  gratefully received.

A 00 Phillips head screw driver is the correct size.  Is your driver the type where the tip of the handle allows it to be stationary while you turn the driver?  Apply a tiny bit of penetrating oil (Croil, if you can get it) and let sit after a few taps with a hammer on the screw driver set in the fastener.  Make certain that the screw driver is perpendicular and apply pressure.  Use a small Vise Grip on the handle if necessary.  And remember, Righty Tighty, Lefty Loosey.
    Ciao.
A thought that may entail some risk if not done judiciously: use a soldering iron with a thin tip and heat up the fastener after applying the penetrating oil.

  • 7200 rpm hard drive for Mac Book..use up battery faster?

Would a 7200rpm hard drive use up the battery faster in a Mac Book. There wouldn't be any problems with heat or anything either, would there?
    thanks!!

The power requirements are virtually the same for their 5400rpm counterparts (100GB Seagate Momentus 5400rpm to 7200rpm for example) so on that front I wouldn't be concerned.
What I would consider is that 7200rpm drives do in fact get hotter than their 5400rpm drive counterparts not to mention that can be much noisier. While I wouldn't expect the difference to be serious it is worth considering.

  • Installing CS6 on a replacement hard drive (same Mac Book Pro)

I am running the latest version of CS 6 on an older (2008) 15" Mac Book Pro (OSX 10.8.2), when I'm away on assignment.  The original 200GB hard drive needs to be replaced and in preparation I've cloned the complete system onto an external hard drive.  I'll be replacing the original hard drive with a larger (1TB) version and can clone everything back onto the newly installed hard drive when it arrives.  But in the "test" I tried today, PS CS6 would not open.  How do I go about installing my legally obtained and paid for copy of CS6 onto the new hard drive?  Do I de activate the present version, then download a copy to the new hard drive and activate it that way or will that be seen as a third machine, since I have one copy on a desk top and once on the old hard drive in the Mac Book Pro.  I just don't want to loose a CS6 activation?
TYhanks for any wisdom on this
    David

Do I de activate the present version, then download a copy to the new hard drive and activate it that way
Exactly. All Adobe programs must be properly installed for the licensing system to work. If you have trouble and get warnings, call support to reset activations.

  • Removing hard drives from Mac g4 tower dual proc?

I have the original hard drive, plus two added drives, in my PowerMac G4 tower, (dual mirrored drive doors).  All the photos/videos/instructions online, don't seem to match my configuration, where the original drive is vertical, along the back of the tower, under the horizontal power supply, while the added drives are under the CD and DVD drives at the front of the tower.  I need data fromt the drive related to a thesis project, as well as other work, have had a grey screen problem (unrelated to the drives) that is unresolvable, so bought a G5, and will use some drives and new wireless card from G4 that are compatable.  I have tried to put G4 tower in target disk mode to transfer to G5 via firewire, but no luck.  Drives don't show on desktop.  Since intending to remove all drives from G4 anyway, will try to use them externally, or internally, to access files.
Problem is, I can't access where it looks like the screws are for the original vertical hard drive, can't find instructions online, or examples that look lik mine. What else needs to be removed in order to access this?  Please Help!

The drives will not work internally in the G5 if they're IDE/ATA drives, G5s use SATA drives, but there are some external options.
It's been a long time, but I seem to remember the rear Drive(s) cage was released with a gray or maybe tan lever that needed pushing one way while sliding the cage...
AHA, there the little beggar is, Step 6...
