Deleting tracks from library within smart playlists

I use iTunes 10.6.1 (7) on Mac.
I spend some time googling and searching for solutions for my problem, but everything is either outdated or simply doesn't work.
I have a smart playlist with all songs that are matched on iTunes Match, but which are below 256k bitrate. I want to delete them from the library, so I can download new 256k versions of them.
This is supposedly possible by using Option + Delete, but that doesn't work for me. I also tried all kinds of other combinations like SHIFT + Option + Delete or CRTL + Option + Delete and none of them work.
What am I doing wrong?

I should add that I have come up with one workaround, although its very clunky.
I add a comment to all tracks in that SPL, which marks them for deletion. I then go into the main music library and filter by that comment (after adding the comment column). This now has allowed me to delete and redownload the tracks.
However I will have to do this step again every time and ofc I need to remove the comment after it is all downloaded now.
I still don't get why Option + Delete isn't working for me, as all posts that I come across state that as the "solution"

  • Can iTunes delete tracks from Playlist + FROM IPOD ITSELF?

    Hello,
i'm pretty a newbie when it comes to iPod and iTunes. Haveing a nano and seen this problem today: I organize all my tracks in Folders on my HDD and drag the folders to the Playlist Bar, so i make a playlist of a complete folder. Then i drag the playlist on the ipod so i gat the same content on my nano as in the original folder on the harddrive. Now sometimes i want to delete some songs inside a playlist off the ipod (for example from a playlist with mixed single tracks, not albums). But when i delete a track out of the playlist, it still maintains on the iPod. Can i make Itunes delete the song automatically off my ipod when i remove it from a playlist? the way it is now i would have to see in the playlists, what tracks i want to delete and then go through the unsorted list with the tracks and delete the tracks by hand....

I am using manual playlist, not this autofill feature. could you please explain this a little bit more in detail? wehre to uncheck the tracks, on the ipod playlist or on my local playlists on the left side of itunes?
I dont know if you got me the right way. I am having a large playlist with a load of tracks. from this playlist, i would like to be able to delete tracks, but not only the playlist entry, also the files should be deleted from the ipod?

  • Deleting Tracks from the IP 4G

I saw a discussion a while back which said there was no way to delete tracks from the i pod 4g unless you did it through itunes. Is this the case? I cannot find a way to do it, but then my "hd" and it's "ram" isn't what it used to be, if you know what I mean.

*I saw a discussion a while back which said there was no way to delete tracks from the i pod 4g unless you did it through itunes. Is this the case*
    That is correct
*I cannot find a way to do it*
How you delete content from your iPod depends how you have it set to update:
If you are updating automatically (syncing) all songs and playlists then delete the files from the iTunes library. In the iTunes Library highlight the file and press the delete key on your keyboard. If you're updating the iPod from a selected playlist delete the song from the playlist and it will remain in the library.
To select multiple items such as all the songs in an album, click on the first track in the list hold down the shift key and click on the last track to highlight the selection. Then press the delete key. Next time you connect they will deleted automatically from your iPod.
If you are updating manually, connect your iPod and when it shows in the iTunes source list click on the chevron (the little triangle) to the left of the iPod icon This will display the various icons for the iPod itself, Music, Movies, TV Shows and Playlists. Click on Music and you'll see the usual song list. Find the files on your iPod that you want to remove, highlight them and delete directly as above by pressing the delete key on your keyboard.
To summarise, you start by highlighting the song/video/selection in either the iTunes library or on the iPod song list as displayed in iTunes then press the delete key on your keyboard: Deleting songs or playlists from your iPod

  • Can't delete tracks from iCloud

I'm trying to delete tracks from my iCloud instance.
In iTunes, I delete from my library all of the tracks that I want removed from iCloud. A pop-up dialogue asks if I would like to remove these tracks from iCloud as well. I select the checkbox to indicate yes I do want. The tracks are then visibly removed from my local iTunes library. The next time iTunes Match runs, however, these tracks are re-populated in my iTunes library, as being matched in iCloud.
Obviously I am missing some nuanced step in this process. Any hints?
If it helps, I'd be perfectly happy to have my entire iCloud library deleted, and start fresh.
Note: I am not deleting the files themselve from the filesystem, just trying to remove their entry in my iTunes library.

    Solved.
My problem is a duplicate of https://discussions.apple.com/message/16988521#16988521
Solution: delete tracks in groups <900, and be patient.

  • Problems deleting tracks from itunes

I have a Mac, Iphone and Ipad. I have problems deleting tracks from iTunes. The issue I have is that tracks keep coming back. The issue goes something like this:
I delete a track from iTunes. I sync with an IOS device. On sync, iTunes says there are purchased items on the IOS device not present in your library, do you want to import them? I select no, then iTunes imports the tracks anyway! Essentially the track I deleted from iTunes, gets imported back in from an IOS device, every time.
This means I face the situation of having to delete tracks from all 3 devices, to stop them coming back. Am I doing something wrong?

There is a way to do this, kindof. See my post here.
The best way to do this if you want to be able to continue updating the Apple TV with new content would be to buy an external hard disk and keep all your movies (and the secondary library itself) on that disk. Then, when you want to add movies to the Apple TV, you would just connect the external disk, open the secondary library in iTunes, and add the movie into iTunes. The setting here that you need to be aware of is the "Copy to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" setting in iTunes Preferences > Advanced General. So long as this setting is on, any movie file that you add to the secondary library will automatically be copied by iTunes to your external drive. Once you're done syncing the Apple TV, and you verify that the movie file did in fact get copied to the external disk, you can delete the copy from the hard drive in your computer.

  • Delete Track from iTunes Library if in User Playlist

    Hello
I want to delete [music] tracks from the main iTunes [10.7] library if they are in a user playlist.
I saw (on dougscripts.com) an approach where the database id was obtained from the track in the playlist and this was then used to delete from the main library.  However, it does not seem to work:
delete (some track of thePlaylist whose database ID is (get database ID of deleteTrack))
returns error -1708 "... doesn't understand the delete message"
I think this is to do with a change to the way in which the main library is referenced, but if anyone can shed some light it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

I found out what is happening: the tracks are shared from iCloud - via iTunes Match - which renders them un-deletable by AppleScript!

  • How to delete songs from library after already deleted from playlist?

I already deleted several playlists in an attempt to free up space. I later learned that you have to delete it from the library to free up space. I also later learned that if I had used alt del in the first place that would have solved this problem. Is there a way to delete the songs in the library that are no longer on any playlists now? How can I find them easily to delete or is there a way to automatically do it. I've already emptied my trash and my library is way too complicated with a lot of songs not even identified. There's no way I can go to my library to look for songs individually.
Also, if you use alt del to delete a song from a playlist and your library... if that song is in another playlist, will it also make it unavailable anymore for that other playlist, as well?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    1) Make a new folder among your playlists.
    2) Drag all your existing playlists into that folder.
    3) Create a new smart playlist with the rule "Playlist is not {name of the folder}."
    4) That smart playlist should contain all songs that aren't in any other playlists, and you can delete them (though I would make sure that everything is as you expect first).
    5) Drag your playlists out of the folder, then delete the folder.
Also, if you use alt del to delete a song from a playlist and your library... if that song is in another playlist, will it also make it unavailable anymore for that other playlist, as well?
Playlists are just pointers to songs in your library — they don't contain duplicate copies of the songs. Deleting a song from the library will delete it from all playlists.

  • [TOUCH] How to delete track from playlist on play

Is it possible to delete a track from a playlist, but not have the track delete from the player? I cannot seem to figure out how, but I am guessing I am missing something because that seems like a pretty basic function.
I go into Playlists, find the playlist I want, click OK, ask to View Tracks. I find the track I want and click on the OK button. It give me the option to Delete the Track, but when I select that option it deletes the track from the player, not the playlist.
I know I could do this if I used my PC to do it, but I wanted to be able to do this in the car when I realize I have a song on a playlist I do not want there.
    Thoughts?

    groovy girl,
It sounds like your app is not responding.
Try to exit itunes, then restart your PB.
Then go to Finder>Go>Utilities>Disk Utility and repair permissions.
Then go back to itunes and see if the delete command works.
    Good luck,
    Scott

  • I keep having a deleted item not delete, shows up in a smart playlist??

    Here's the deal...
I listen to a bunch of podcasts and starting about a week ago I noticed one episode I had deleted kept showing up as trying to sync. I thought I fixed it but now other episodes have this happen too after I thought I deleted it.
The file is deleted, moved to trash, even think I've trashed it. The file does not show up in the podcast area in itunes. But, the episode does show up in a smart playlist that had that file marked with 5 stars. If I look in the finder, that file is there so I delete it from finder that way.
After I delete it in the finder, the file is in the smart playlist but creates a "dead link" even though the file shows nowhere else in itunes. I must run the "super remove dead files" script (downloaded off the web) to find that dead link hidden somewhere in itunes and remove it.
This is really weird and is now happening almost every day with a different episode in my podcast list.
Any suggestions as to what needs to be deleted/re-created/cleaned up?
    Thanks.

solved this on my own by running a script to remove the dead track from the playist

  • Can't delete songs from library on iTunes9 Windows

I follow the directions for deleting songs from the library but nothing happens when I press delete button. I highlight the song and press delete but don't get the next option of whether to delete it from the computer or not. Nothing happens. Any tips?

"Library" is highlighted? I can't highlight "LIBRARY" on my panel on my left side. The first thing I can select is "Music":
The reason I belabor this point, is that if you're looking at your main collection of music from the iTunes app, hitting the delete button (or right-clicking and select "Delete") should work fine. But if you're working with a smart playlist, you cannot just delete, because presence in the playlist is controlled by rules, not by adding or deleting files from the playlist. If you really want to delete from not only the smart playlist, but the entire iTunes library (and your disk), you can shift-delete and that can delete something in a smart playlist from your entire library.

  • Deleting tracks from Match

    Hi there,
I am over the 25,000 tracks now and I get the info from Apple that I am not allowed to sync more tracks through Match. That's OK. I knew that.
But, I have deleted 17,000 tracks from my iMac and kept them in Match. Since I am over the 25,000 tracks on Match the 17,000 tracks are gone from iTunes in my iMac. I can not upload them anymore to my iMac. I still see them on my iPhone and iPad. That's strange in my opinion. I should be able to upload those 17,000 tracks to my iMac at anytime.
Is it possible to delete the tracks only from Match, and not from my iMac?
Is it possible only to sync playlists to Match and not whole albums?
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi,
If you create a new blank library and sign into itunes store / match, this will show all the tracks you have in match. Each track will have the cloud symbol with the download arrow.
If you delete a track, this removes it from the cloud. If the track is still in your original library, the iCloud status will show as "Removed" once you have signed back into the original library. If you have previously deleted the track from your library, the track is now removed completely.
I manage my library this way and have a couple of thousand tracks with "Removed" status. Such songs play as normal on your computer and are ignored when imatch updates are run.
A word of caution - keep signed in to match. If you sign out then back in again, the match process runs again and will tell you that you have more than 25k tracks. If have had this problem a few times but has been solved by restoring the itunes library from a time machine backup.
PS I reccmmend that you maintain and external back up of all your music. You should not rely on Match as your sole backup.

  • Can't delete or clear songs in Smart Playlist

    Guys,
I'm creating a smart Playlist to isolate my mini from my 20gb. I cannot for the life of me delete or clear any songs from a Smart Playlist, and it is REALLY annoying me. Can anyone please help? Everything is current versions BTW.
    Thanks,
    Todd

The reason you can't delete songs from smart playlists is because they are in fact "smart" playlists - whatever goes into them is totally dependant on the "rules" that you set in the "edit smart playlist" area. Smart playlists are completely automatic by these rules that you set, and songs can't be manually added or deleted in any way.
If you want to be able to manually add & delete songs from a playlist it has to be a manual playlist that you use.
Hope that clears it up a bit

  • Deleting tracks from zen mi

I have deleted tracks and albums from both the player and the mediasource, yet when I put it on 'random play all' the deleted tracks still play! Am I doing something wrong? I can't see what else I can do to get rid of these!
    Please help!

Are you deleting the track from the Now Playing section? That will only delete the track listing in that section and not the actual file. If you need to delete the audio file from the player, you should go to the 'All Tracks' section in Music Library and delete from there.

  • Iphoto is deleting phote from library when it shouldn't be

I am new to iphoto(6). I created a few smart albums, but each time I try to delete an image from the album...it deletes it from the library as well. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help. J.

I hope someone can help me...I'm trying to organize my photos before they become unwieldy. I understand enough to realize that if I am in the library, and delete something...then it will do as expected. My problem is that I am definitely in an album, and simply want to remove an unwanted photo. I select the picture by clicking on it, and then press the "delete" key on my keyboard. Yes it disappears from my album, but I also notice it gone from the library (and the photo count is down by one, and the photo is also in the trash). I then take it back out of the trash, and put it back in the library. Could this be a bug?..I mean the steps for editting the album are staight forward. Please help! Jcraig
