Deleting unwanted addresses

Whenever I type in an address for a new email, I’m offered a list of matching names from my Address Book and Previous Recipients List. If I go into the Previous Recipients List and delete any address I no longer wish to see in the list (and also check it’s not an address in my Address Book), immediately the deleted address is not now offered as an address for a new email. So far, so good.
But, if I now quit Mail ( for example, as part of a Restart), the deleted address has returned to the Previous Recipients List and appears once more in the dropdown list of possible matching addresses.
Very frustrating. How can I reliably delete unwanted addresses? Where am I going wrong?

Good morning Ernie.
After taking the precautions you listed, I dragged the MailRecents file to the Desktop (had to key in my log-in password), relaunched Mail and sent an email to my wife (who's in my Address Book, of course) and to a completely new address (not yours, but thanks for the offer). When I opened Previous Recipients, yes both these addresses have now been added to the list – correctly dated and with an Address Book icon for my wife. But I've still got all my pre-2008 email addresses in the list too! Even by consigning the MailRecents file to the Waste Bin I'm still showing all the old addresses. What I'll do now is just manually remove from the list any addresses I don't want to keep.
I've also checked that the Previous Recipients list maintains its changes after quitting and relaunching Mail.
Problem solved after two years of irritation. I am grateful. This is my first ever use of Apple Discussions in 27 years of Mac ownership, and it's worked a treat.

Look in your Contacts App and see if the unwanted address is entered there.  If it is, you can delete it there.

  • Delete unwanted addresses from terminal

my computer is hacked by many addresses :-
So I went to Terminal > put in netstat >> many address poped out, I can't remove them.
         How to removoe those addresses

The only way that I currently know of to remove old or incorrect addresses is to reset the device back to factory defaults, which is somewhat extreme. You could try leaving feedback for Apple and maybe one day we'll be able to edit them : http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

  • How do I delete unwanted e-mail addresses

Did a search but couldn't find any answer.
I know how to delete addresses (cards, individuals) from the address book, but how do I delete unwanted addresses from the mail-program memory, or maybe it's the address-book memory? Whatever it is, it stores the addresses of everybody I ever communicate with whether they're physically in my address book or not.
Now my wife has a new e-mail address, her old one is no longer functional, but every time I type her name into the "to" box, it automatically fills in the old address. How do I get rid of it?

Select Previous Recipients from Mail's Windows menu. You can delete one or more from the list. This will not affect Mail's selecting from your Address Book.

  • How can I delete unwanted mail addresses from the auto fill list in e.mail

When I go to type a mail adress on my ipad I get a drop down list of previous mail addresses including all the typo's and used once. There doesn't seem to be a way of deleting unwanted one's. Unless anyone knows better?

No, it can't be done. There have been many requests for this.
All you can do is send feedback to Apple on it at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iPad.html

  • Can't delete Unwanted Email addresses, Auto-fill in saves them all !

How do I delete Unwanted Email addresses?
Auto-fill in saves them all !
When I start a new email, every email address I've
ever written to pops up (To:) This greatly increases my
chances of sending a new email to the wrong person.
.....there's got to be a way to delete just the addresses
    I don't want !....but where & how ?

I am also looking for a way purge the email addy autofill of old contacts that no longer exist. Many a family and friends have since changed their E-mail addy's, I have deleted their old addy's from contacts, yet the iPhone autofill still manages to hang on to those in some stored cache that is NOT accessible to purge or delete! This is something I've struggled with regarding the iPhone since my first iPhone months after it originally released years ago, have since owned a few other iPhones as they progressed, currently an iPhone 4, on os 4.01, same issue persists. Have restored my phones, started from new during some restores, etc, those old defunct E-mail addy's still autofill!
I sync with my iMac yet do not even have my mail client set up on the iMac, never have since we bought the iMAc, web based E-mail only, so this issue has nothing to do with mail client on the computer it syncs to.
It would be nice if someone from Apple would reply with acknowledgment that they are indeed aware of this and hopefully it is on their to-do list.
    Regards,
    Paul

  • Deleting an unwanted address

I deleted an address and replaced it with updated info. Although the correct address shows in the address book, the old address pops up when I type the first few letters of the persons name. How can I rid myself of this nuisance? hrks 1931

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
    See:

This old address is simply in this special AB.

how can I eliminate unwanted addresses in Addressbook V 4.0.6?
If that's what you really want to do, the answer should be obvious: delete them from the contact in Address Book, the same way you added them.
But if you're really talking about removing Previous Recipients, that's controlled by Mail, and BDAqua has given you the method to do that.

  • How do I get permanently rid of unwanted addresses from Mail?

How do I get permanently rid of unwanted addresses from Mail?

I don't think there's a way to edit the previous recipients. Not easily, anyway.
I'd just delete what's wrong and make sure to get it right the next time.

  • Deleting email addresses

I am trying to delete an address that I have used many times and was in my address book. So far I have: deleted the address from my address book, deleted the address from the previous recipients list, added the new address for the person in the address book and yet whenever I type the persons name in the "to" field" in mail the old address still comes up. How do I completely delete an email address I no longer need?
    Mark

Oh thank you so much for this - a no-longer-active email address for my husband was driving me crazy as it always came up as the first choice (even though I had deleted it from his details in Address Book) - now the address I want comes up first and the unwanted one has disappeared!
I just knew that Mac would keep it simple, somewhere

  • How to delete email addresses from address book(?)

I want to clean-up/purge my address book of old/obsolete addresses. What I've been doing is deleting entries within each address, but that creates as many "no name" entries as the ones deleted. Is there a way to delete unwanted email addresses? Thanks.
    Pete ((The Oldfella)

I don't understand the question... In particular, I'm not sure what you mean about how deleting e-mail addresses creates "no name entries". If you want to delete a contact, simply select it and choose Edit -> Delete Card (or just hit the delete key). If you want to remove an e-mail address while leaving the contact, select the contact, click the Edit button and then click the red '-' button next to the e-mail address.

  • Deleting email addresses recommended by mail on an iPad or iphone

How do I delete email addresses showing as recent in mail when I start to type in to the To..this is on my iPad and iPhone.  Many are a long time ago...they seem to collect forever.  Is there a way to delete these other than one by one when they show up as I type in the To on an email?  Better yet, is there a way to turn this off so that the suggestions are only based on what I have in my contacts?

You can get rid of them, but you do have to do it one at a time as the come up. You can keep scrolling down through the suggestions and delete a bunch in one sitting, as long as they come up in the suggestions.
You can only do this with email addresses that have the "I" to the right. That means that they are not in your contacts. Contacts have to be deleted in the contacts app.
To get rid of the unwanted Recents, tap the blue "I" to the right of the email adress. In the next window you can tap on Remove From Recents to delete them.
