Desktop background only displaying white!

So I have the g5 iMac. I had the background set to change through patterns every minute. Now the background is just white. I put the menu bar on translucent and can see the patterns changing on the menu bar, but not the background. It remains white. The folders and icons on the desktop are still there also. When I shut down or reset, the background of selected images will show for a split second right before it turns off too. It's more just annoying than anything.
Who knows what's up!?

I am having the same problem, have you had any luck fixing it?

  • Desktop background turns to white

Hi, this just started today. During startup, the selected desktop background picture flashes. When all applications that are set to open at startup have loaded and all disks have loaded, the desktop background turns all white, except the menu bar which still displays the selected desktop background. I have tried restarting several times, I have tried using different background pictures, all the same result, my desktop is all white which makes it hard to discern various open windows since most window backgrounds are white too. Please help.
    Thank you.

    Hi jkjuarez2012,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your iPod nano is only showing the Apple logo with a white background, and you've tried many good steps including resetting and restoring the device. I know I'd miss my music in this situation.
Make sure that you followed the steps in this article when restoring your iPod:

  • After 10.6.7 can't get desktop background to display

This problem is similar to Linc Davis problem solved in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2795229
In that thread I write: "I tried the [] from Linc Davis and it didn't work for me. I have a MBP bought in may 2010 i Sweden which is where I live. "  When I never got replies I figured it was because Lincs thread was marked as solved (green text). So I created my own discussion (this thread).
After upgrading today to 10.6.7 I notice the desktop background is replaced by a completely white background. Quoting vr8ce since this is the same for me: "It displays them in System Pref with no problem, and it doesn't give an error when choosing, it just doesn't change the desktop background." Unlike vr8ce, it was not happening in 10.6.6 for me. And unlike vr8ce my background is not blue but white.
I haven't tried using anything from iPhoto etc - I'm just using the images in System Pref.
I have upgraded to 10.6.7 (today), rebooted, run Repair Disk on the Install DVD (from another tip). I don't actually remember "fixing permissions".
As I said, the tip from Linc Davis - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2795229 - didn't work for me. I'm not using a Screen Saver and never have, instead I prefer to close the lid, but not sure if this is the best thing to do.

  • Can't get desktop background to display

I don't know if this is HW or SW, but I'll start here.
I have a brand-new MBP (early 2011). I can't get it to display a desktop background for love nor money, i.e. going into System Preferences, Desktop/Screen Save, and choosing a background, I get nothing but a light blue screen. It doesn't matter if I choose one of the pictures that comes with OS X or one of the pictures from my iPhoto library, it won't display them. It displays them in System Pref with no problem, and it doesn't give an error when choosing, it just doesn't change the desktop background.
For the iPhoto library (although, remember, it doesn't work with the OS X pictures, either, i.e. Desktop Pictures, Plants, etc.), it works fine in both iPhoto and in Screen Saver, i.e. the Screen Saver displays photos without a problem.
The problem survives a reboot, fixing permissions, and the 10.6.7 upgrade, i.e. it was happening on 10.6.6, and it's still happening after the 10.6.7 upgrade.
    Any ideas?

I just tried the top from Linc Davis and it didn't work for me. I have a MBP bought in may 2010 i Sweden which is where I live.

  • App Store 'Update' only displays white screen

Even though it indicates that there are updates for 2 installed apps, the 'update' function in App Store only displays a blank white screen. Nothing is displayed and there are no options to actually install the updates.
It has previously worked fine but suddenly decided to just show a blank screen.
    Any thoughts or ideas?

  • Palm Desktop software only displaying Media option

I have a Z22, and a PC running Vista.  I have used the Palm desktop for a couple of years with no problems.
The only change I made recently to my PC is installing Firefox.
The next time I opened the Palm Desktop, all the items like my Calendar, Memos, etc were no longer on the desktop display.
The only two items are Media and Install.
Attempting to find the desktop again, I tried to reinstall the software from the original disk.
It would not run, giving me an error and exiting from the installation.
So, I downloaded the desktop 6.2 from the Palm website.
No change, I still only see the Media and Install items.
What is the next thing to try?  My Z22 still has my contacts and other information, but it no longer appears on my computer.
    Thanks for your advice.

    Two things to try:
    1. Next time you run Palm Desktop, right-click on the Palm Desktop icon first and choose "Run as Administrator".  Everything should reappear.
    2. Turn off "User Account Control" in Vista.  Start Button/Contol Panel/User Accounts/Turn off User Account Control.

My ipod touch is stuck on the home screen, will not respond. Displays a gray background with the ipod logo, sliders are unresponsive. Bottom slider displays many different languages, none of them english. Maybe a virus or malware?? Restoring with itunes does not work, neither does holding down the home/sleep buttons to reset.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • IMac (Intel) only displays white screen with Apple after power-outage

Last week, we had a power-outage.  iMac is plugged into a surge protector. When power was restored, powered up the iMac, but it will not get past the initial white screen with the Apple logo and the spinning black/white wheel.  I have tried shutting down and re-starting, unplugging and re-starting, etc.  Nothing happens.  Ideas?

You HD probably crashed. Please run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode and see if it reports any errors. If it does please post them and we will try to translate them.
Also if your area has power issues I would strongly recommend replacing the surge protector (which is worthless in a power outage) with a UPS. A Uninteruptable Power Supply has a battery in it that is designed to provide enough power in the event of a power outage so the computer can do an orderly shutdown. I recommend the APC brand, you can find UPS's at your local office supply store or even Costco. A good quality one will cost about $100.00 or more.

  • SWF playing corrupts desktop background

Using FF 3.6.13 on Fedora 13, KDE
When playing a SWF file in FF, the last viewed image corrupts the desktop background. Wherever another application has a white color, the latent image from the last SWF shows through.
As a test, I set the desktop background to solid white. The screen image can be seen at http://www.wrlee.com/Pictures/CorruptedBackground.jpeg This image was taken with a digital camera since the KSnapshot tool does not pick up the corrupted desktop background that is "showing through" the application. The picture shows the FireFox screen when I was typing this message.
Looking at the picture you can see the ghost image of the last SWF I viewed when I visited a website. (That site was http://www.sunbrella.com/ )
This is a very annoying bug since YouTube images are SWF, and SWF is used more and more in websites that I visit.
Logging off and back in (i.e., restarting the KDE window system) cures the problem until I stumble across the next SWF file and it corrupts the background again.
    Need help! Badly!
    Regards,
    Bill Lee

I have the same issue with the latest Shockwave Flash 10.2 r152 player on Linux.<br />
I can see the ghosted and crashed Flash player in Firefox if I change the background color to black (Edit > Preferences > Content > Colors).
    I have reverted to Flash 10.1 r102 (10.1.102.65) because of this.<br />

  • Recovering a desktop background?

I set my desktop background to be an image in iPhoto, but accidentally deleted the original image and emptied the trash. The desktop background still displays the image. ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist has the path to where the image used to be, but the original jpg isn't at the location specified. I've tried searching for images modified recently, with no results.
I've restarted the computer a few times, and the background image is still there, which leads me to believe that it's cached or stored somewhere, but I can't figure out where.
I'd really like the desktop image back as I don't have any other copies of it. I'm comfortable using the Terminal if this would help, but I have absolutely no idea where the current desktop background is stored. Does anyone have any ideas?
    MacBook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

If it turns out that the original can't be found or no longer exists, note that the Desktop background is actually a separate window (although it may not seem like one). Therefore the window mode of the screencapture keyboard shortcut should be able to capture it, albeit at the current resolution (i.e. if the original was at a higher resolution, or if the image is being stretched, etc., what you get is what is displayed as the "Desktop" - the detail of the original won't be recovered).
So try ⇧⌘4, press spacebar (the mouse pointer should turn into a "camera"), then click on the "Desktop", being sure to avoid clicking on any icons. This should capture just the "Desktop" without icons or menubar, but the image should in fact include the region that is under the menubar.

    Hi Maryan,
Open System Preferences > Displays > select the window for you external monitor > click on the Arrangement tab and check the box next to Mirror Displays. It may be slightly different in Lion, but the idea is the same.

  • Only seeing desktop background on LG TV from iMac

I connected my iMac via mini-DVI to VGA on my LG TV. When I choose the input on the LG, I am only seeing the desktop background but with no dock or windows. When I try to select the LG in Detect Displays in Preferences, nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

    HI Emiko,
By default Mac OS X uses an external display to extend the desktop. If you want to mirror the built in monitor you need to enable it.
    go to the menu bar
    click on the apple menu
    chose system preferences
    click on display
    click on the arrangement tab
    check "Video Mirroring"

  • Thin white lines on desktop background

After having my computer on for a while, one or two thin horizontal white lines will appear on the screen. They are around a few inches long, and never appear in the same place twice. They only affect my desktop background, not any windows or screen saver at all.
Reloading the desktop background or restarting the computer makes the lines go away, but I'm wondering what is causing them, and if it's a sign of some underlying problem.

    Insert your MacOSX DVD
    reboot while pressing ALT key
when icons appear on the screen select Apple Hardware Test and run extended test.
Perhaps a video memory problem. If yes motherboard is dead !

  • Projecting through VGA but only background is displayed

I have my Mac Book connected and it has a signal, mirrored is checked but it only displays the background picture and not my Imovie... I only see to make sure mirror is checked. Is there a function key I need to press or is something else wrong???

Hi Luis_66, welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like your MBP is set to "extended desktop mode". What this means is that your Sharp is acting as an "extension" of your MBP screen's desktop. So, depending on your settings in the "Displays" System Preference pane, your MBP thinks that the Sharp screen is either to the right or to the left of the MBP screen. So, if you were to try to drag a window to either the left or right of the MBP screen (off the screen) it should appear on your Sharp. Same for icons. The MBP also has the capability of "mirroring" what is on the MBP display to the Sharp display, so that you would see the same thing on both screens. I believe this is an option in the same "Displays" area of System Preferences.
If you go to the "Displays" System Preference pane, you will see a depiction of your current screen setup, when the Sharp is connected. One of the two screens depicted in that window will have a menu bar and dock depicted on it. You can then drag that menu bar to the other screen, and both screens will refresh and your menu bar and dock will appear on the Sharp! You can also change the resolution and refresh rate that the MBP is outputting here. It should match the native resolution of your Sharp TV (should be noted in your Sharp owner's manual).
It's kind of a hard concept to explain! I hope this helps you!
