Diamond question mark boxes instead of unicode via ssh in term.
Terminal and iTerm both show the diamond shaped question mark box (instead of the proper unicode when I am SSHed into a remote machine. For the most part this is just a cosmetic issue, though it's annoying when I am trying to read non-english messages on IRC, etc.
irssi (for example) running locally displays everything properly: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/62449/localirssiunicode.png
Over ssh I get this: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/62449/sshirssiwat.png
The local terminal is set to utf8, and all the default encodings are selected, but playing with them doesn't seem to help much.
I hope I am posting this in the right place.
The general approach at this time is to ask if you've checked for any problematic fonts (all languages) with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Find and remove all duplicates also.
Start there to be sure all fonts that are in play come out with a clean bill of health.
Don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from Office 2008, including those related to an Equation Editor installation.
By all means be sure any 3rd party apps AND plug-ins are Snow Leopard compatible.
An additional measure is to clear the existing font caches:
http://www.macworld.com/article/139383/2009/03/fontcacheclear.html
That said, 10.6.2 release notes have this to say about fonts:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3874
Fonts fixes provided for:
• an issue with font spacing
• an issue in which some Fonts are missing
• font duplication issues
• an issue with some PostScript Type 1 fonts not working properly
Good luck in any case.

I keep getting an intermittent error on web pages where a blue box with a question mark appears instead of pictures. For example Facebook and Zappos would load normally on one visit, but if I visit other websites and return I get the blue box instead of pictures. If I restart the problem will go away temporarly. However, normally returnes in time.
HI,
From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the Appearance tab. Tick the box next to: Display images when the page opens.
If that box is already ticked, from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset. Relaunch Safari. If you still have problems loading images, go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
Make sure Safari is not running in Rosetta. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle so it faces down. Where you see Open using Rosetta... make sure that is NOT selected.
If you still have problems, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.

I have a 2011 iMac with version 10.6.8. I haven't made the switch yet to Mountain Lion. I just upgraded internet service from AT&T DSL 3.0 to AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet 6.0. After the "upgrade" I now get the blue question mark box on websites where images should be. Also, I'm unable to stream videos on sites like Hulu. I have troubleshooted the issue by ensuring the "Display images when the page opens" box is checked and reseting Safari. I do not have any 3rd party extensions.
Now here's where I get really confused...I also have a Dell laptop (work computer) connected to the same network. It doesn't have this problem at all. Works fine.
Anyone have any ideas?Hello, I'd reseach all the problem & missing features in 10.8 before considering it.
For the Safari problem, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Click OK.
Also, turn off IPv6:
System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
Or whatever Interface you use. -
Quicktime logo with question mark appears instead of flash content
since updating my system yesterday to OS x 10.4.11 i have been unable to view flash content with _all browsers_. *Quicktime logo with question mark* appears instead. Spent 4 hours trying every fix suggested by Mac forums worldwide - with no result. Took the computer to the apple store where they actually took 60 euros off me for NOT fixing the problem. Still cannot view any flash content. Any help would be appreciated
Mac book Pro 2 Ghz Intel Core DuoThese are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 and OS 10.4.11.
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
RealPlayer 10 for Mac from http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product= RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
Perian from http://perian.org/
Adobe FlashPlayer from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)
In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them).
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
The world should now be your oyster! -
Box with a question mark inside instead of the picture or graphic
I notice when I open i-Tunes 10.1.1 or the App Store most everywhere there are supposed to be graphics or pictures there is just a box with a question mark inside?
I am up to date on all software, what do I need to do to get the graphics to come up?
Thanks"OS X Lion includes a new feature called Lion Recovery that includes all of the tools you need to reinstall Lion, repair your disk, and even restore from a Time Machine backup without the need for optical discs."

Queston mark box instead of attachments in mail
Hi everybody,
I have a strange problem with mail. When I attach a file to a mail instead of seeing the file icon (or the image) I get a strange box with a question mark on it. In the end I'm able to send the message and it wirks fine, but I'd like to see the attachments properly (expecially photos, which now I can't edit...).
Do you know why this huppens and what can I do? Thank you very much!I think I have hunderstood what's the problem: I was trying to delete an additional component that I had installed in mail, but since I didn't know what I was doing I deleted instead a mail component that was quite important I think. The component was inside tha mail package under the folder "Plugins" (I don't remember the name, but there was only that plugin). Since now I don't have with me the Mac OS X dvd and I don't know where to find that plugin, does someone know where can I download it, or can someone please mail it to me? Thank you very much!!! Bye!

A question mark (?) instead of a icon for imovie
I have tired to use imovie, but my icon in the dock is a question mark. I have hooked up the USB cable and got nothing, like it did not even exist. I bought this computer new a few years ago, and I think I am out of applecare. This is supposed to be simple, but it is not working out that way. Where do I start with this thing?
The symbol in your Dock is just an alias.
iMovie should be in your "Applications" folder.
Remove the questions mark from the Dock and drag iMovie to the Dock.
Also iMovie requires Firewire, not USB. Firewire is also called i.Link and IEEE1394. -
HT3964 A file icon with a question mark appears instead of apple when booting?
Macbook will not boot. An icon with a question mark in a shape of a file apears after a long delay. I am accessing network on another Mac. Any suggestions for booting would be welcome.
That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead. -
What does it mean when a blue box with a white question mark appear instead of images?
This happens frequently when I'm using the internet. I've tried using different web browsers, but nothing helps. Also, the internet goes in and out, but wi fi signal is fine. Any ideas?
The browser timed out waiting for the image data to come across the Internet link. Can be accidental, a really lousy ISP service, or deliberate, some entity along the line is preventing the images from getting across. Try starting up the browser in "safe" mode with all plug-ins and add-ons disabled (see the Help menu in Firefox, see the Security pane in Safari's Preferences), just to make sure the browser isn't blocking itself. If that doesn't help, you will have to go "up the food chain": check your router, call your ISP, try connecting from different places, etc.

All attachments now blue boxes with question marks
Something happened over the weekend to Apple Mail on my laptop... ALL attachments now just show up as funky little blue boxes the question marks. Instead of showing me a JPEG, PNG, or PDF inline in the message, it's just a little blue box. If it's an XLS file, for example, it doesn't show me the file name inline, it's just a funky little blue box. This is true for BOTH incoming and outgoing messages. If I create a message and attach a PNG screenshot that I just took, I can't see the image in the message, all I see is a funky little blue box. For the incoming messages, these images that I can't see are not linked to an external server, they're attached images.
Here are two screenshot examples:
http://johnhmoore.com/AppleMail1.png
http://johnhmoore.com/AppleMail2.png
In both cases, I should be able to SEE the images.
I'm in Apple Mail 3.2 (919/919.2) on OS 10.5.2 on a MacBook.
Thanks,
JohnI'm having the same issue and came across this page while searching for solutions.
What really bothers me is that the attachments are there I just can't see them!
i found this older discussion that mentions the same basic issue. Just thought I'd post it on the offchance it could help. (I haven't figured out how to find my plist so it doesn't help me much.)

Quicktime and question marks....
For what ever reason, I recently have been running into the quicktime logo with a question mark inside, instead of a quicktime movie or window on some websites. How do i get Safari to play these quicktime movies and get rid of the question marks???
I have the most current version of flash amd have unchecked the box in preferences as directed, but still have the same problem with the grayed out "Q" - evenon Adobe's own page. See

Question mark in mountian lion launch control were app icon should be
I have just purchased a new mac book pro which came with OSX lion installed. As a result of that I did a time machine backup from my old macbook to the new one. All went well and everything was updaed. I then installed OSX Mountain lion. It said on compleation that all was well. All dock items were there, everthing open and closed from the dock, however when I opened launch pad the following apps had a question mark icon instead of the app icon. They were MOUNTAIN LION.CALENDER,CONTACTS,NOTEPAD. They all launch from the dock but not from launch pad, anyone have any ideas whats wrong.
I cannot find it in the applications folder on those accounts, just on the main account
Safari is supposed to be in Macintosh HD --> Applications
If Safari is not in that folder, move it there.
It should not be in Users --> yourusername -->Applications
