Dictation... for Canadian English

Hey, Apple I love you. And I really appreciate your putting together a dictation module for Canadian English. Now I can do my dictation much faster, and with an enormous reduction in the number of errors.
But really… a Canadian dictation module that doesn't understand the word “eh”? What were you thinking?

EVERY single time I have to install the thing (which I've done a dozen times before version seven finally has an upgrader), I have to choose the WRONG language. Why is "English (US)" the only English option? Why not just say "English"? Or offer "English (UK)" - god knows, I spend enough UK money on UK iTunes!
We're just your fellow users here. Submit your comment to Apple through the iTunes application feedback page.
keep hearing about the fabulous video content available in the States. Hello?!?
That "fabulous" video content will come to the UK if and when the content owners allow Apple to make it available to you. Until the content owners do, there's absolutely nothing Apple can do.

  • Support for Canadian English and French in OBIEE

    I would like to know whether OBIEE supports Canadian English & Canadian French. I have looked at several documents and links pertaining to the "Language Support", but am still unclear whether they are supported.
    Many thanks for your assistance.
    Regards,
    Hareesh

    Well it's certainly no small task you're undertaking there, but there are a couple of ways of doing it as far as I know.
    The first is to store all the phrases in all languages in an XML file, then pull the correct outputs depending on the current language. For example: (pseudo, obv)
    <xml>
        <dict lang="EN-US">
            <phrase id="1" value="Hello there. Welcome!" />
            <phrase id="2" value="Sorry to see you go, goodbye!" />
        </dict>
        <dict lang="FR">
            <phrase id="1" value="Bonjour. Bienvenue!" />
            <phrase id="2" value="Ah, le chat des ami. Au revoir!" />
        </dict>
        <dict lang="ES">
            <phrase id="1" value="Hola! Bienvenido!" />
            <phrase id="2" value="Lo siento, pero tu hermana es muy guapa!" />
        </dict>
    </xml>
    You then load each language into a structure in the APPLICATION scope (call it APPLICATION.LANG), then pretty much everywhere in your code you need to output something you'd instead do:
    <cfoutput>#APPLICATION.LANG[SESSION.language].phrase1#</cfoutput>
    Or similar.
    The other approach is similar, but involves having the phrases saved in database tables and doing a similar thing.
    And sadly no, you'll struggle to find anything that can reliably translate for you - certainly not a database.
    O
    PS languages are not my strong point, as you may have noticed.

  • Canadian English on iOS?

    I've been using the iPhone 4 and iPad, and as the president of an editorial company and a Canadian journalist sworn to CP Style, I have to say the lack of a Canadian English keyboard setting on iOS is driving us insane up here. Sure, we can go with English (UK) and get most of our superfluous 'U's, but no 'Z's in prioritize or apologize. Or we can go with English (US) and quash a couple Britishisms, but still no 'S' in the defense or practising verbs.
    There's a perfectly good Canuck English dictionary on OS X. Why has this not been ported over to iOS? Can we (please) expect this to happen with iOS 5? Even if it's something we have to go online and add to our devices manually, the five minutes of hassle up-front would curb a lot of aggression afterwards. Especially with iCloud syncing iWorks documents – will that mean every "Canadian English" Pages document will default to US or UK English as soon as you make a couple edits on your iPad?
    Being that I spend the other half of my life in Argentina where they've got a Spanish dialect entirely their own (with its own name and everything: Rioplatanese), I could open up an entirely different can of worms on that, too. But I'll leave it here for now.
    Thanks, eh.
    -R

    I agree this is an inexplicable omission. I'm stuck between choosing auto-correct mangling my U's with the US keyboard or mangling my Z's with the UK. Considering there are +20 million English Canadians, and it would likely take one Apple engineer all of an afternoon to fix this considering the dictionary exists in OSX, how has it lingered this long???

  • Canadian English Dictionary

    Does anyone know the procedure for installing the Canadian English dictionary in FrameMaker 9.0? We were able to install it successfully in 7.2 and 8.0, but the same procedure does not work for 9.0. The procedure we followed for 7.2 & 8.0 is as follows:
    Modify installation
    Scroll down to Canadian dictionaries and click the dropdown arrow
    Choose the "remove" option (third option indicated with red X)
    Then run the installer again, this time choosing the first option under Canadian dictionaries.
    Open a new document, type "hoser" or "pogey" (specific Cdn words), and run the spellcheck to make sure that these words don't get picked up.
    We were instructed to change the regional and language options settings to Canadian English in the Control Panel. However, the dictionary is still not working properly.

    That is strange.<br />
    I can't reproduce it on a en-US installation.
    Which locale do you have installed?
    The en-US locale that has its own dictionary or a en-GB locale that doesn't come with a dictionary?
    Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
    See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile
    There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
    If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Why can't I switch to Canadian English on Pages?

    Hi guys,
    I'm having a hard time getting Pages to accept Canadian spelling. I've already Clicked to "View" Then "Show Inspector" Then "More" Then selected "Canadian English" in the toolbar.
        However, even with the toolbar open, the moment I click on my pages document. It reverts from "Canadian English" to "English"
        I've even reset the system languages to "Canadian English"
    Not sure what to do here...There isn't a save option on the toolbar.

    You set your preferred default language in System Settings. Drag Canadian English to the top of the list.
    The Pages language setting is only for selected text. It is not a magic wand you wave over your document. It is for varying the spell checking for different parts of the text.

  • SetMnemonic for non-english characters

    Does anybody knos how to set JButtons mnemonic for non-english characters?
    My mnemonic is loaded from a resource bundle, and in the documentation the setMnemonic(char) is only limited to english and it is written that the user should call setMnemonic(int) instead.
    So what value should this int contains in order to display the non-english char which is loaded from resource bundle?
    Thanks in advanve,
    Hanoch

    It seems that this is an issue that has popped up in various forums before, here's one example from last year:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=16&threadID=490722
    This entry has some suggestions for handling mnemonics in resource bundles, and they would take care of translated mnemonics - as long as the translated values are restricted to the values contained in the VK_XXX keycodes.
    And since those values are basically the English (ASCII) character set + a bunch of function keys, it doesn't solve the original problem - how to specify mnemonics that are not part of the English character set. The more I look at this I don't really understand the reason for making setMnemonic (char mnemonic) obsolete and making setMnemonic (int mnemonic) the default. If anything this has made the method more difficult to use.
    I also don't understand the statement in the API about setMnemonic (char mnemonic):
    "This method is only designed to handle character values which fall between 'a' and 'z' or 'A' and 'Z'."
    If the type is "char", why would the character values be restricted to values between 'a' and 'z' or 'A' and 'Z'? I understand the need for the value to be restricted to one keystroke (eliminating the possibility of using ideographic characters), but why make it impossible to use all the Latin-1 and Latin-2 characters, for instance? (and is that in fact the case?) It is established practice on other platforms to be able to use characters such as '', '' and '', for instance.
    And if changes were made, why not enable the simple way of specifying a mnemonic that other platforms have implemented, by adding an '&' in front of the character?
    Sorry if this disintegrated into a rant - didn't mean to... :-) I'm sure there must be good reasons for the changes, would love to understand them.

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to validate for non-english character on a single line text field.
    I recommend to use jQuery to attach regular expression validation. Please refer to:

    Hello! I used QuickTime for watch any videos on OS X Mountain Lion, but now, I'm passed to OS X Mavericks and QuickTime, when I open an .avi file, convert this in a .mov file. I'm sorry for my English, I'm French and I don't know speak English very well, but what can I do for QuickTime opens on .avi and doesn't convert to .mov?

    HI GalaxieMusique,
    I'm french too, but I'm going to write this post in english so that everyone may understand it
    I have the same problem in Mavericks, but I'd say, more important, with QuickLook.
    Indeed Quicklook can't read avi movies anymore. Actually it always been the case, but with Perian we were able to fix it. The problem is that Perian is no longer available for Mac OS 10.9....
    I'd assume that our only hope is Apple themselves... It would be nice from Apple to creat an add-on for quicklook to be able to preview the avi movies.
    In regards with quicktime, you can download QuickTime 7 here:
    http://www.01net.com/telecharger/windows/Multimedia/lecteurs_video_dvd/fiches/10 0.html
    and ask all the .avi movies to be played by QuickTime 7 and not QuickTime X (included into Mac OS).
    Sorry for the english, we french people can make mistakes sometimes
    If anyone has a solution for QuickLook, please do not hesitate. This topic is becoming a real mess....

    Fonts are defined in the template you use to generate the pdf. Your application add the data and both is processed yb the FOP processor. Now there are two possible causes of the '???' :
    1. the data you sent to the template contains the '???' already
    2. the template can't digest the data (the special characters) and puts '???' in the pdf.
    Before going on you have to find out which one is your problem. The 2nd is the problem you better ask this in a FOP forum as you have to solve it by changing the template.

  • Word Replacements for Non- English Characters

    Hi
    Does anyone have an idea on implementing Word Replacements for non- english characters in TCA- DQM 11i.
    We are trying to identify, capture and cleanse common accented characters like à, â , ê
    However, the default language for replacement is American English , So even if we add these in the existing lists it will not take any effect

  • What's the regex pattern for regular English chars and numbers ...

    In Java String there is a matches(String regex) method, how can I specify the regex for regular English chars, I want it to tell me if the string contains non-English chars. The string is from an email, my application wants to know if the email contains any foreign characters, such as French, Spanish, Chinese ...
    So if the string looks like this : "Hi Frank, today is (5-7-2007), my address is : '[email protected]', email me ~ ! ^_^, do you know 1+2=3 ? AT&T, 200%, *[$300] | {#123}, / _ \;"
    It should recognize it as regular English characters.
    But if it contains any foreign language (outside of a-z) chars either western(Russian, Greek ...) or eastern languages (Japanese, Chinese ...), it should return false.

    ISF/javascript code doesn't work for non-English RequestCenter proile
    Hello,
    I am not sure if i posted the same question before also. We have some customers who have set thier language profile in newScale requestcenter to French. However, all the javascript customizations configured on the service forms do not function for 'French' as a Langauge preference. Has anyone encountered the similar issue before and can anyone please suggest a solution for it?
    Thanks,
    Mihir

    we had a similar issue a while back where the Approval button was not working in Spanish, needed a fix from nS for it
    The way to fix this would be to locate the language XML file, override the French caption with Submit and on onLoad write a global JS that would write the button label again (not so sure about this)
    But really its an major defect and they should be able to fix it.
