Did I Screw Up?

I have a MacBook Pro 2.0 Intel Core Duo. It's a few years old but still works fine. Back in August of 2009, I had upgraded the harddrive myself to a Seagate 500 GB drive - had no problems (though it was one of the drives Apple had trouble with in the newer MacBook Pros). On 12/23/09, my hard drive crashed. So I bought a new hard drive (this time an Hitachi 320 GB), installed it and installed Snow Leopard and ran Software Update to update everything. Then I restored my mac by making use of the backup in my Time Capsule. I decided that since the crash left my laptop partially functional for awhile, it would be best to do a fresh install of Snow Leopard just in case any OS errors got into my backup.
So I used the Migration Assistant, pretending like I just bought a new laptop. But in doing so it told me that the user account name on my new harddrive was the same as the account name in my Time Capsule. I didn't realize this would be an issue. I simply used the same account name.(Why would I change it?) But the migration assistant was telling me to change the name since you can't have two accounts with the same name. Duh! So I changed it. It was only when I was clicking continue that I noticed I could have overwritten the user account on my new hard drive, but alas I kept going.
So, after waiting awhile for the restoration, I started up my laptop and noticed nothing changed. I realized I had two user accounts - the one I created when I reinstalled my OSX and the one I restored to under the new name. So I switched users and voila, everything was restored! Yay Apple!
But I want to make sure I didn't screw things up. I haven't tested my laptop much yet but when I synced my iPhone with iTunes, everything worked fine but it said that the photos in my iPhone were no longer synced with my iPhoto library and would I like to resync them? I'm not sure why this was but maybe it was because it thought my iPhoto library had changed folders? It didn't - the user account folder name was changed - but I didn't move the iPhoto library.
So I said yes and had to wait till it reloaded all of my photos to my iPhone. (I do wonder why the photos were a problem but not the music files...) It really wasn't a big deal and it did remember which photo albums I wanted and which I didn't, but it has me concerned that some of my other software might be affected in a similar manner. I suppose it wasn't that bad since it did everything fairly automatically - I didn't have to tell it where my photo library was - it just knew. All I had to do was click Yes and I was back in business, after waiting for all the photos to be optomized and reloaded on the phone.
Just a minor quirk? Am I ok or have I messed things up? Can I leave it as-is, with my laptop restored to the new account name? Or should I redo the whole installation and restore, this time sticking with the same account name that was in my backup? (I suppose this would be accomlished by installing Snow Leopard via a temporary account name and the restoring from Time Capsule using my old account name.) I'm not attached to my old account name - I don't care that it has changed. I just don't want to find out that my software is now confused and can't find all my files cause the account name (and thus the home folder name) has changed.
Thanks!

I have four Seagate Momentus 7200.4 drives (almost certainly the same 500GB drive you mention) and two of the four have already failed. One failed within 6 hours of being installed. I'm not impressed with this drive and don't blame Apple for dumping it.

When you first install Mac OS X (fresh), you get a first-time "out of the box" (OOTB) experience. The little welcome video, the registration questions, etc. During this OOTB, the Mac will run "Setup Assistant" (basically it's Migration Assistant as part of the initial setup.)
The advantage of restoring your Mac from the Time Capsule at this point (while running Setup Assistant) is that no accounts would have been created on the Mac yet, so there would be no account name collisions.
If you ignore Setup Assitant, go ahead and create the first account, and THEN run Migration Assistant, you can't restore accounts if you have any account name collisions. You would need to create a temporary account on your Mac, delete the account with the same name as an account that was backed up via Time Machine, and then perform the restore from Time Machine while logged into the temporary account. You can then delete the temporary account after you've verified that your real account was properly restored.
So, after waiting awhile for the restoration, I started up my laptop and noticed nothing changed. I realized I had two user accounts - the one I created when I reinstalled my OSX and the one I restored to under the new name. So I switched users and voila, everything was restored! Yay Apple!

No worries. You'd get the same message if you moved into a new Mac. Since you reinstalled a new drive it looks like iTunes is treating it as though this may be a new Mac (when really it's just a new disk.) Just tell it to sync your photo library to this computer and all should be well.

You should be fine. Verify you have all your files on the "restored" account. You should also notice that the account you created just after the fresh install of OS X doesn't have any of your files. That account can safely be deleted.

After upgrading from Lion to Yosemite my iPhoto wouldn't work because it "needed to be upgraded" so I tried to upgrade by got the message that I couldn't upgrade b/c someone else bought it or it was deleted. I deleted my iPhoto app on my iPad about 1 week ago but my iPhoto and 1000s of pix were fine. What's up? Did I screw up by deleting the app?

No, the versions of iPhoto on the iPad and on OS X are totally different.
What Apple ID are you using for the Mac App Store? Who else has access to that Apple ID, or what possible other Apple IDs could be in use? It's possible you'll need to purchase iPhoto to get the upgrade, though I'd think Software Update should offer you the correct version.

  • Did I screw up something while installing OS...?

    Hi,
I started the installation of an OS, but I quit the process at the beginning. I was asked, to select from where to restart, and I chose HD, with the old OS. When the computer restarted, it got stuck, i.e. the screen is gray, with the Apple logo, those little black lines are chasing each other in circle, and it's like this for quite some time. Did I screw up something...?
    Thanks.
    Aleksandar

If you are expecting only a new OS X install on the computer,
why did you interrupt the last attempt at an install?
Anyway, depending on what you have going on, it may be prudent
to not run Disk Utility until after some semblance of a bootable OS
in the computer is installed and boots up normally, since it may
not be possible to really repair something not quite there.
If you do not need whatever is on the computer's drive, go ahead
and boot from the installer and run the Disk Utility in there, to
perform a secure erase (and choose 1-pass, to over-write the old
content) and reformat the hard disk drive. Then, there would be
no old system folders, applications or anything. It'd be all Gone.
But, if you expect or hope to use some applications from an older
OS X (Panther) in a Tiger system, by upgrading over 10.3 w/ 10.4,
    then that would be via an Archive & Install over your Panther OS;
and your old account names, passwords, and network settings,
user account preferences, etc could be carried over into the Tiger.
Otherwise, they'd not be; and you would have to manually add them
to the system. And some parts from Panther, in an A&I-type install,
could be scavenged from a 'previous system' folder, maybe, so if
you have one of those in the computer after an install and upgrade,
that can be looked into with some degree of wonder. Some of these
apps may require an installer for them to work; others may not. And
utilities (onyx, etc) from an earlier install OS X won't work in the later.

  • Reformat: I hit the "skip" option and now what?  Did I screw up?

okay so the empty space was taking forever so i wanted to stop it and just do the full process all over without the 7 pass and just the single pass so i hit the "skip" button. i did that about 2 hours ago and it is still "skipping." so what have i done. did i screw something up? i just wanted to start all over. i was going to quit disk utility but it said that could cause damage. so what is going on now during this "skipping" and why is it taking so long?
if i can just get started over i will do the "single pass" and i will not just do it with the empty space...

There is nothing to start over from. If you haven't hosed your hard drive by now perhaps what you can do is stop the process and do an Erase & Install.

I wish it were that but a long time ago when I had a problem with the gadgets with iGoogle back 6 months ago thereabouts I was asked to disable it then and I did and I just went to re-check and it is still not enabled, however, it will not let me un-install it though.. It only gives me an option to enable or disable.. Any advice ? So I'm wondering if it is something else still or is there a problem with the avast still ?

  • Why did apple screw up the discussion forum format?

Why did apple screw up the discussion forum format?

    Hi,
Apple in this case has to rely on what software is out there that can handle the amount of Traffic that these boards get.
This is from the Brows Option the selecting People in the box
    Note the Number
At the Launch of the new software this was at just over 2,250,000 and has now topped 2,300,000
That is well over 50,000 people joining in just 2 weeks.
Jive are the only real players in this market.
To some extent the software is a one size fits all, much like the previous software was.
We got used to the look and the Folder type layout of the Previous software.
We ignored the foibles of where things were placed.
Things are somewhat double edged in my view.
    I post mostly about iChat.
I don't like that the Leopard and Snow Leopard forums that were are now "Refine the List"/Tag led searching to read specific threads. (not to mention that returning to "Dicussions" loses the "refinement").
On the other hand those same threads and anwsers are now a lot more viewable in the OS forums than the subforums of before.
As a regular poster I use a couple of Boiler plate things for a welcome message and my Signature.
Some were made with TextExpander and included the HTML code to sttyle things slightly.
These no longer work without going to the HTML editor.
Posting link used to use the BBCodeXtra add-on to Firefox but this action is now included in the Regular and Advanced Editor.
That means I equipped myself and used things to get around shortcomings of the old software which is some cases I either don't need or need to learn the new way.
I am sure the Style will morph as we go along.
Of course some of this relies on what exactly you mean by:-

  • How did Apple screw up the maps app this badly?

I am normally not a complainer, but rather appreciate great technology.
However, I am shocked beyond description about how badly Apple screwed up the maps application in IOS 6.
The maps application is the by far the most frequently used and most useful iphone application for me.
I rely on it all the time.  It WAS so incredibly easy to use, and almost always dependable.
Yes, turn-by-turn directions would be nice, but not at the cost of screwing up so many other critical features.
I have now had 2 extremely frustrating experiences.
The other night, I was driving home from work and using the maps application to route to a store.  I was using the voice instruction mode.  There was heavy traffic so I wanted to zoom out / around to look for alternate routes.  Well, this is almost impossible to do, and furthermore, there is much less accurate and detailed information about traffic conditions.  This would have been a piece of cake with the old maps application.
Yesterday, I had to make a trip to Pacific Sales in San Jose.I tried "Pacific" with the mapped zoomed to the general area, and it could not find it.Then I tried "Pacific sales", again no luck.  Its an appliance store, so I tried "appliances", and again no luck.
Finally, I had to log into the web, go to google maps, and find it there.
It was slow, but it worked!
1 month ago, I had the highest confidence in Apple due to their track record of deliverying great stuff that works and is easy to use.
I would never have considered an android phone.
However, this problem with the maps app has so shaken my confidence in Apple, that I will go today to look at a Samsung Galaxy III.
Maybe its not going to be my thing, but I hope Apple realizes how big they screwed up.
The Apple of Steve Jobs would never, ever, ever have let this happen.
The old Apple would have stayed with Google Maps for another year, and made this new maps app better, more reliable, and more user friendly than Android BEFORE releasing it.  It would have been revolutionarily good and would have surprised us with how good it was.
I really truly love Apple and its products.
But this is a really bad mistake and I am so fearful that its an omen of whats to come in future from Apple.
I would not be surprised if this very deeply damages Apple at a time when the competition is getting tougher & tougher.
Of all the functions on the Apple Iphone, the maps are the heart and soul.  Apple is probably right to go its own way eventually, but not like this!
It is just going to drive people into the arms of Android.
I am just curious, did Apple actually test this thing thoroughly before releasing it?
I mean, it took me only a few days to figure out this thing is total crap.
How did Apple not know this (which is a very scary thought), or maybe even more scary, maybe they did know but feel they have enough market power to get away with it?  I can't think of any other explanations. So, which is it?  Either way, its very bad news for Apple fans.

Ok, 3 more wonderful IOS 6 maps experiences to share!
When out shopping for paints, decided to visit Kelly Moore.
Used the maps app and used it to take me to the nearest store, except it was not where maps said it would be!
I called the Kelly Moore store, and they told me the maps app has the wrong town, and they have had many customers with the same problem!
Next up, I was looking for a Sherwin Williams store in San Jose, so maps took me to El Camino Real, except it took me to the wrong end of El Camino Real in Santa Clara, about 15 minutes from the right destination in Mountain View!  In fact, the app took me to Santa Clara University!
Last up, I was looking for a Chevron station.  Apps routed me to the location, but no gas station.
So, I finally decide to use google maps through the browser, and it ends up it was again the right address but wrong city!!!!
Unbelievable!  My confidence in Apple has been further shaken, to where I am about to give up.
I just can't trust their app, which is something I depend on every day to save me time, money and gas.
So disappointed in Apple right now...  It makes antenna gate look like a minor incident, which it was in my opinion!

  • Lenovo V570 Laptop Power Button does not work. Did I screw it up?

Hi, my Lenovo V570 keyboard recently stopped working so I took the keyboard off to reposition the cable. In the process I disconnected another cable on the motherboard (shown in the pictures below). I also cant find the black plastic piece that was holding it down.
Now not only does the keyboard not work but the power button does nothing. After research though Ifound out this laptop is notorius for having the power button go bad.
When I plug in the AC adapter I do see the battery light go on and it charges so I dont think the motherboard is bad. I
have tried every trick in the book as far as getting static out of the laptop power button (holding down power button for
certain times). I looked at the mainteneance manual for this laptop and could not figure out what the disconnected cable does. I have tried reconnecting the cable without the plastic piece but that did not work.
Is the disconnected cable responsible for this or should I order a new power button board with cable?

  • Uh oh...did i screw up really badly?

i went back over my posts and saw that i was supposed to update firmware before installing os x. i didn't do that? now what?
one post said not to let os x near my mac without updating. did i do serious damage?
please tell me how to rectify the situation.
    thanks in advance.

its actually a bigger deal on the slot loaders. If you have a tray loader like your information indicates, I'm pretty sure OS X wouldn't even install unless you had done firmware update 1.2 ni the past. If you had OS 9 on there previously, you already had the latest firmware.

  • How did apple screw up so bad

two days ago idownloaded itunes 5, and an album and now ipod is frozen unrecognized by my computer and is completely ruined can ne1 tell me how to fix this,an tell me apple screwed up so bad

Believe it or not, your iPod crashing and downloading iTunes 5 are almost certainly unrelated. At the top of this window, under the Apple tab, is a button for Advanced Search. Click on it and then search for Troubleshooting iPod. Look up how to reset your version of the iPod. If that doesn't solve your problem, work your way through the other steps.

  • If 10.4.8 **DID NOT** screw up your MBP, post here please!

Based on what I've read here and about half a dozen other Mac forums, this release has torched a lot of people across all the Mac platforms.
Common sense tells me to sit this one out. However, I want to know how many of you upgraded your MBP to 10.4.8 *without a hitch*.
Please specify if you did the combo or software update method.
    Thanks!

Ok what's the point? Once you get 17.5 responses you're going to say ok I'm going to install 10.4.8?
Mine had a few minor glitches the past day or two, seems to be working fine now. It's hard to say whether it's a function of the update or a function of other things installed.
If your computer works great with a previous version and you're truly worried, don't update. There are enough people here stating their problems are caused by 10.4.8. But how do they really know?
The only reason why I say this is because those other people are having legitimate problems with their computers and their threads don't deserve to be bumped down by ones of people saying "oh yeah, mine works fine", "mine works just dandy", "works great", "no problems here"... for NO reason.
I would take the other threads as your advice, and to be cautious in installing 10.4.8. But then again, the correlation does not imply causation.

  • External drive and my Albums. Did I screw up?

I had begun creating albums in iPhoto for future projects and cds. But I had so many photos I needed to move so to an external storage device. Seems like it went just fine. But when I revisited my albums, many were almost empty. Seems when I moved the content off the mac hard drive, it took the content out of the albums. I thought I was creating copies when I put something in albums. Can I fix this? Did I set it up wrong? Not sure if I have to go back to square one now or not. Thanks in advance.

I appreciate your help. But I am so confused. No real mac training, so I am sure I am using wrong terms. When I start her mac and it first fires up...no programs open...the photo files from the disks were visible as files there. I dragged those to the external storage.
I'll try to get on here again later when I get home and have her mac sitting there.
Assuming that you have the default settings and are copying imported photos to the iPhoto library the photos on your desktop are not part of iPhoto and you can do what you want with them - they simply do not affect iPhoto in any way - only photos that have been imported into iPhoto affect iPhoto - and those are not normally visible and are not on the desktop

  • Library: Did I screw up?

I haven't made any new purchases from itunes in 2 years, and I reinstalled my OS this summer. I backed up my library (library.xml i hope is the backup) and reinstalled itunes, but didn't run itunes again until today when I purchased 50 new songs. When I opened up itunes it downloaded the latest itunes version and searched for all my music. I didn't even think, it only pulled the ones that I had burned from cd. It is obvious now that it did not restore my library (duh because i didn't tell it to) but well I made purchases and downloaded them as I realized.
The question: If I restore the library now, will I lose the new songs I just bought, or is there any way to get both my old stuff and new stuff in the same library?

That article annoys me, because rebuilding the itunes library from the XML file loses all the Date Added info, and they don't mention that.
The main library file is the ITL file - that is the one you want to make regular backups from.
+What I mean is, if I didn't heed this important note, have I made an irreversible error?+
    No, it's not irreversible.
Now that you have restored to your older library, your newest additions will be missing. Just add them back in.

  • Uninstalled Firefox using Revo Uninstaller (advanced mode) in Vista, and now Firefox will not run, period. No task in task manager. What dependencies did I screw up?

I wanted to reinstall Firefox to get rid of all the old Java libraries still installed. I uninstalled using Revo Uninstaller in Advanced mode, and I didn't bother checking what it did this time. I know firefox needs something to exist before it will start, otherwise I wouldn't be having this problem.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== I uninstalled Firefox with Revo Uninstaller in Advanced Mode ==
    == User Agent ==
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US) AppleWebKit/533.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/5.0.375.38 Safari/533.4

Yes, it needs the user profile, I think. Granted you probably lost all your bookmarks and passwords and history and so on...
Go to your [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles profile folder] and delete it (or back it up, maybe there's stuff you can scavange from there).
Try to reinstall Firefox now. It should create a new profile.
And the Java stuff will still be there. It is uninstalled separately at your operating system's control panel, I believe. You can disable the plugins you don't want, too. Just go into Tools > Add-ons > Plugins.
And for future reference, if you uninstall Firefox and check the box that says to delete your private data too, it will clean every single trace of Firefox from your computer. This isn't some fishy software you download from a fishy site. Firefox is clean and safe to use :)

  • How Badly Did I Screw Up?? THANK YOU!!!

For months now I have been unable to set my video card's (Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128) AGP to 8x.  I have flashed (successfully) my BIOS with the latest version.  I've downloaded the latest ATI catalyst drivers as well as the latest nVidia drivers.  ATI drivers would load, but only the nVidia audio drivers would load, the GART drivers would not.
I had read on another forum (il2sturmovik) of a guy with a similar problem and he was instructed to unistall all his ATI drivers and nVidia and nForce drivers.
Today, I uninstalled all the drivers (rebooting after each uninstall and not allowing Xp to install the drivers on start-up), and ran Driver Clean.  So far so good.
Then, realizing I did not uninstall the nForce drivers I ran Driver Clean and got rid of the chipset drivers.
    And therein was my mistake.
Now, I am unable to boot into Xp.  I get a message saying I've had a hardware change and would I like to start in safe mode, debug mode, etc.  No matter what I select, I'm stuck in a loop always getting the same screen on startup.  The computer was left on to start in debug mode, so I have no idea what is going to happen when I get home.
I can't even restart Xp in"my last successful configuration".  Of course, recovery points I had set prior to all this can't be accessed.
So, what's the bottom line???  Can anything be saved here?? Or, have I essentially toasted my mobo??
Any and all help will be very appreciated.

A HUGE Thank You!! to Bogs & Frenchy!
Did a repair and also hunted down a missing .dll and the nvatabus.sys files.
My rig is back up and running and now I just have to figure out how to get those *$%#@! GART drivers to install
    Thanks again!
