Did system restore. Need my "old" search box method back again. Need ed-meister.

I had problems with my computer so I did a system restore. Also had to contact Norton. Anyway, once fixed, my Firefox search got screwed up again. Or should I say, was set back to a new update version which I hate. Someone helped me out and I was able to fix it, or reset it to the way I liked it before about a couple of weeks ago. I went to fix it again today myself and something is a little different. I had no problem with Firefox, about:config ,but the preference is not exactly the same. The word 'false' is missing now. Now it only says : browser.search.showOneOffButtons. The first word, 'false' does not precede the word browser. It's gone. Will toggling the preference the way it is now, work (without the word 'false', present). I don't want to highlight it and take the chance of making things worse, unless somebody tells me it will work the same with either the word 'false' there or not. Can anybody help. Where's the ed-meister?????

False will not precede the pref name in any file involving preferences; ''but in the prefs,js it will appear after the pref name, following a closing quote mark, a colon, and a space.''
False is not part of the preference name; being a Boolean preference there are two "values" - '''False''' to disable that preference and ''True'' to enable it - which make it a preference that can be "toggled" between true / false -- on / off.
As far as doing a System Restore, check to make sure that Windows didn't revert Firefox to a previous version - the latest Firefox update was approx three weeks ago, which was mentioned as the restore date you chose to use in your PM to me.

And what exactly? Sorry, you need to explain better. Just spitting bullet points is not going anywhere. In particular provide some system info and describe the exact problem. Does the installer launch at all? Are there error messages?

Sometimes Firefox will hang during startup or shutdown, and still be running invisibly in the background. Usually in that case, you need to "kill" it either by restarting Windows or using the Windows Task Manager. It sounds as though you are familiar with opening the Processes tab, finding firefox.exe, and using End Process.
If you use an advanced firewall or other security software that tracks which programs are permitted to use the internet, please see these articles:

A couple of other suggestions:
(1) Can you start Firefox in its Safe Mode? Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. You should get a two-button dialog. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset). Any difference?

Right, this one is bugging me.
ive just got an ipod nano for my birthday (november) and have installed all my songs onto it.
but then after a few weeks of having itunes my pc decided it didnt like its sound device, so the sound on my pc completley vanished, so we tried re-installing all the drivers, no avail.
so, (this is on windows xp) i did a system restore to an earlier restore point (before itunes was installed!)
and then did another one, before that date too!
now, i dont have sound, i dont have itunes, i dont have quicktime.
and whenever i try install any of these i get this error message

same for quicktime, just with quicktime in the name rather than itunes.
this is incredibly annoying as i cant even watch dvd's on my desktop anymore because something is blocking my sound device

i did two system restores BEFORE i installed ITUNES
i cant re-install ITUNES because i get an error ITUNES.MSI is on a network device which is unavailable.
i dont want to loose all my songs and albums because theres over 1000songs in there.
and itunes will not open or install!
oh... and i have tried backup on the system restore function on windows xp, wont backup BOTH system restores!

If you are not getting sound, go to your control panel and open: Sounds and Audio Devices Properties>>Audio tab and check that your Sound playback device is set to your sound card.
For reinstalling iTunes, after that mess I suggest you do a full removal of iTunes and related programs with Installer cleanup of any programs that do not uninstall, then a reinstall.
Here is the method, follow it carefully and don't leave anything out.
Download a fresh copy of iTunes and the stand alone version of Quicktime (the one without iTunes)

Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program.

If you don’t see an entry for one of the programs that did not uninstall, look out for blank entries or numeric entries that look like version numbers e.g. 7.x for Quicktime or 1.x for Bonjour.
restart your PC
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check that it works.
If it does, install iTunes.

Did System Restore w/o backing up files, will songs be recognized from iPod

I am a user of Windows Vista, and I recently did a system restore on my PC. The problem is that I did not back up the files from my iPod before doing so. If I re-install iTunes and hook up my iPod to my PC, will the songs automatically be recognized by iTunes rather than overwriting all of them and leaving my iPod almost entirely blank?

I'm not sure what you are asking, but if I understand you correctly, then, no, the contents of your iPod will not sync back to iTunes. The sync is one-way - iTunes to iPod. There are third-party utilities that can be used to copy the music files on your iPod to your computer to re-constitute your iTunes library. You will need to look for such software on typical shareware sites for Windows.

How to get old search box back

Yesterday my broswer updated and I now have version 36. This comes with a new search box. I had several search engines listed with different languages, now all i see in this stupid new version is the same icon, I can't see the labels anymore which had DE / FR / EN in. They all look the same now.
How do I go back to the old version? Who designed this? Some yank who can't speak any language other than english? I think I'll do what my colleagues have done and switch to chrome.
and why does this site require so many stupid steps to ask a question, and when I create an account is thinks i may have meant .com instead of .de for my email address... what kind of crap is this? Does everyone at mozilla live in america and only speak english?

It's an option in the Advanced Section of the Classic Theme Restorer add-on. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/ if you want to check what other things with the UI you might want to undo.

After system restore i reinstalled firefox, how to get back bookmarks etc with old firefox data?

After system restore the only thing i have is old firefox data on desktop if all bookmarks, passwords are recovered it will be great help.

The "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop has been created as the consequence of resetting Firefox.
Doing a Session Restore may have reverted the profiles.ini file to a previous version that hasn't registered the new profile folder that a reset had created, so you may need to check for this.

The "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K and the "AppData" folder in Windows Vista and Windows 7 and later versions are hidden folders.

If you have a profile folder that is more recent than the "Old Firefox Data" on the desktop then you can use edit the profiles.ini file and change the path of the currently default profile to the name of the profile folder as you find in Document and Settings.

It is always best to be cautious with using System Restore as this can cause some file to be replaced with older copies, i.e. your Firefox installation and profile folder can get inconsistent and you may have to reinstall Firefox as well.

I'm using a laptop with Windows XP. I updated to newest version of Firefox, but really didn't like some changes it made, especially to my Gmail. So I did a System Restore. Since then I have not been able to access Firefox, although I've tried 4 different ways several times--it just won't come up on the screen, so I've had to use Internet Explorer. I went to the control panel (Add or Remove Program), and found that I still have version 3.6.15, and it even says that I last used it today, even though it never came up on the screen. System restore needed or are there other options

This problem has been ongoing but now I'm ready to do something about it! I accidentally changed (I think!) my powerbook's name so while I can see files from my windows machine on my mac, when in explorer, Windows says the path is invalid on my machine. In other words, it sees the mac, but cant access the files (file sharing is on). Is there a way to repair the path or is it best to just bite the bullet and reinstall the system? If so, what is the easiest way to back up my files, especially music and pictures? Thanks!

I don't know the answer, but I would like to think that someone has a simple answer for you. I suggest that you also post this problem in the Networking and Web forum.
Even if your problem has a simple solution, this is a good time to consider a backup strategy for your computer. You could buy something like a 200 GB firewire external hard drive. You could format it with at least two partitions, one big enough to hold a bootable version of your operating system and the other a large partition where you could store all of your music and other important files.

I think a Windows System Restore should be OK but you could always de-activate first to be on the safe side.
Formatting and then restoring from a drive image has caused problems with the licensing.
