Difference between archive or copy iphoto library

When you control click on the iphoto library you get the choice to "create archive of 'iphoto library' or copy 'iphoto library". How are these different and when would you use one over the other?

Creating an archive of it produces a compressed zip file. Copying it places a pointer to it in the clipboard; if you then paste into a new Finder window, an additional uncompressed copy of the library is created at that location. Pasting to a location which doesn't accept files will only produce the folder's name.

    Hi Rodobaldo,
Let's try to clear up this issue for you, I'd like to clear out the music on your iPod first. You'll want to find the Sync Music Checkbox, uncheck it, then Apply or Sync:
Once you have done that, recheck the "Sync Music" checkbox, and apply the changes once more. This will instruct iTunes to completely remove all music from your iPod nano, and then copy the files once more. If you have a large amount of music, this initial sync may take a while.
If the above does not resolve your issue, see the following article:

  • I am trying to copy iphoto library Error Code 36

I am trying to copy iphoto library from one hard drive to another and get the message The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “iPhoto Library” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36) = Need to back iy up or my wife will kill me. thanks for help

Here is something you can try:
Obtain iPhoto Library Manager. It is an inexpensive program you can download. Run it and tell it to REBUILD your iPhoto Library from your original iPhoto Library. It will create a NEW file in a destination that you specify (you can specify the other hard drive and thus get a backup all at once) and try to recreate the iPhoto Library based on the info from your original one. Depending on the problem causing your -36 file error, iPhoto Library Manager may (a) successfully recreate your entire photo library successfully on the other hard drive; (b) recreate all of your original photo library except for the part that is damaged; or (c) won't be able to finish at all if the disk problems are severe enough.
If (c) happens, you may have to copy the actual photos individually out of the iPhoto Library and into a new iPhoto Library. The actual photos are inside the iPhoto Library. You can find them by control-click once on the iPhoto Library and select Show Package Contents. The folder called Originals or Masters has the photos (originals) and a folder called Modified or Previews has the edited photos. I suggest COPYING (not moving) these folders to the external drive. You will then need to re-import the actual photos inside these folders to a new iPhoto Library.

    That code is

Make sure the EHD is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and run Disk Utilty on the EHD and repair the disk.  If that fails to help I'd try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the external HD as the location of the newly rebild library.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Differences between archiving and inactivating a qualitative lookup within the Data Admin toolkit.

    Hi,
Can you please let me know what could be the difference between archiving and Inactivating the Qualitative Lookup in Data Admin Tool Kit.
    Thanks,
    Rohini M

When you inactive or archive something it is no longer available for selection.   The difference between inactive and archive is that inactive items will still appear available for searching purposes while archive items will not.
So lets say you have the following:
    List A
       - Item 1
       - Item 2
    List Items
If you were to inactivate Item 1, end users would no longer see it available for selection when using the qualitative extended attribute.  However when they search for specs based on the extended attribute they would still be able to select Item 1 so they could find objects that used that value. If you were to archive Item 1, end users should no longer see it available for selection anywhere - including searching.
    Lists
If you were to inactive or archive the entire List A, you would no longer see it available for selection when setting up qualitative lookup extended attributes.   I don't think there is anywhere you can search for extended attributes by lookup list currently out of the box so these would act similar.  If there was a place to search for extended attributes by lookup list then it would follow the same rules as above.

  • Differences between Remote Client copy and Client export and Import

Dear All, I am new to SAP. Please let me know the Differences between Remote Client copy and Client export and Import. Any response is greatly appreciated. Thanks a Million

    Hello Mallikarjuna,
    Follow the below note,
    https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/552711
which describes the answer to question - Which is better or faster, a client transport or a remote copy?
Basically client transport would be preferred if the network connection between the source and target system is slow.

  • Difference between "Archive/restore" and "Export/import"

What's the difference between the utilities "Archive/restore" and "Export/import"?
Which utility must I use for putting my maps from a development environment to a production environment?
For the moment I am using version 9.0.3.
I will migrate to 9.2 when the version for AIX is available.

    Marc,
You should use OWB Metadata Export/Import utilities (not to be confused with Database Export/Import utilities).
The Archive and Restore utilities will be desupported in the next release of OWB.
The exact differences are documented in "OWB 9.2 User Guide", page 15-12, "Differences Between Archive and Export" and page 15-23, "Differences Between Restore and Import". The same sections are available in "OWB 9.0.3 User Guide", pages 11-45 and 11-46 respectively.

  • Difference between importing images from iphoto via drag & drop vs 'media' button

Hi (long time reader of this community, but my first post),
i'm creating a huge document (approximately 200 pages) in Pages (5.0.1, Using Maverick on a 27 inch iMac).
In the new version of Pages the "Media" button only produces small images that makes it difficult for me to choose which photo i want.
Is there a difference between importing images from iphoto drag & drop vs 'media' button.
Or is it better to just drag and drop the original jpegs (which i also have in a folder).
Is Pages the best program to use for this type of project? it is a profolio with about 4 photos, text, text boxes etc on each of the 200+ pages.
    any help much appreciated.

Pages 4.3 might be up to the job. I very much doubt Page 5.0.1 is.  It lacks more than 90 features of its predecessor and is very buggy to boot. You probably have an iwork09 folder in your Applications folder. I suggest you trash Pages 5.0.1 and use Pages 4.3 until Apple makestheir new "Eddie Cue" ready for prime time (if, that is, they ever do).

  • How do I use/copy iPhoto library from my MBP to iMac?

I purchased a new 3TB iMac and wanted to use my existing ~128GB iPhotoLibrary from my MBP. I tried to AirDrop the library, but, after 12 hours or so, it was downloaded as a "package" kind file instead of a "photoLibrary".
For now, I have both machines in the sharing mode and "switched" the iPhoto library on my iMac to use the MBP one.
    Any help is appreciated.
    -- Regards,

The iPhoto Library is a package since iPhoto 7 (08).  Did you try to open the packaged library after the transfer was done?
A safer way to copy the library to your iMac is to connedt the two with a LAN or in Target Disk Mode,  Transferring files between two computers using FireWire, and manually drag the library from the MBP to the iMac.  If you new iMac doesn't have a FW port you might need a Thunderbold to FW adaptor to do the Target Disk Mode.
Another way would be to use an external HD or large enough flash drive to copy.

  • Can't copy iPhoto Library file

I am trying to copy my iPhoto library from one mac to another. I have them connected with an Ethernet cable. The library is about 90 GB. When I drag the library file over it appears to copy about 1/5 of the file (judging by the blue line) and then it stops and says something like, "the iPhoto Library file already exists."
Anyone have any ideas? I certainly checked the target drive/folder and don't see any previously existing library file sitting there.
    Thanks in advance!

There must be something more to this problem. I don't think that it is iPhoto library specific b/c I have the same sorts of error when copying other folders of data between the two computers. Strangely enough, when I initiate the copy command from the other computer (the one that has the files I want to copy), it works without a hitch. I guess I'll just do it that way.
    Thanks.

  • How to copy iphoto library folder from Time machine to new hard drive

How do I copy my iphoto library and music library from my time capsule to my new hard drive?
I have a Macbook pro - 2.53 GHz - 4 GB memory.  I just replaced my hard drive to 500 GB and upgraded to OX 10.9.4. I created a new user account and login password for the new hard drive.  I copied my documents folder to external drive before the old hard drive failed, but I was not able to copy over my iphoto library or imusic library.  My old hard drive was regularly backed up on my time capsule (1TB).
I used migration assistant to transfer my user account to the new hard drive (1 of 3 on the time capsule).  The data transferred successfully, but at login the login name  does not match the user folder. Nor do any of my passwords allow me to login to the transferred username/account.  When I login to the account that I set up on new hard drive I can see the userfolder migrated in but the folders do not allow entry.
What can I do now at least to get my photos on the time capsule onto my current hard drive? Can I go into my time capsule like an external hard drive and simply copy over my iphoto library from the last back up of the old hard drive?

You probably tried to move a user account from your TC to your computer that was already active on the computer.. this is one of the no no's that pondini lists.
    See how to migrate. http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
There is a huge amount of info there about transferring files.. that you must not have a user account of the same name as the one you migrate.. and how to transfer files between migrated accounts.
He also has specific info on moving itunes and iphoto stuff here.
    Q15 http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
You might need to fix up permissions or reset the password for the account.
    There is details here..
How to reset admin password iMac
I have had to do that myself.. once you reset the password you will be able to login to the account.

  • Copying iPhoto Library to new MacBook Pro

I have recently bought a new MacBook Pro primarily to use when travelling. I also have a iMac which will continue to be my main mac. I naively thought that by using Migration Assistant I'd be able to copy/transfer all the stuff I have on my iMac (iTunes Library, iPhoto Library etc....) to the MacBook Pro but it's clearly not as simple as that.
Can someone please help me to get the content on my iMac to the Pro and is there a way to update any new photos etc automatically from my iMac to the Pro? It's worth adding that I also have a Time Capsule which is used for backing up from the iMac.
    All help gratefully appreciated!!

I don't know what problems you've had, but I was able to do that with Migration Assistant.
    To move your Library:
    1. Connect the two Macs together
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder on the iMac to the same location on the new one.
    3. Launch iPhoto.
That's all there is to it..
is there a way to update any new photos etc automatically from my iMac to the Pro?
Yes, simply use the Pro as a back up location and back the library up using an app like DejaVu.
However, this will work only as long as you use the Pro as a back up for the iMac. If you add photos to the Pro and then try and sync the two you may damage either Library.
Alternatively, you can use iPhoto Library Manager to move Photos, Events and Albums, plus associated metadata between Libraries.

  • Error when copying iPhoto Library to new computer

Hello! I just got a MacBook Pro and I am trying to transfer my old iPhoto library (Macbook) to my new computer. I followed the suggestions on this forum to copy my iPhoto Library from my Pictures folder to my new computer. It gave me an error/warning message: "One or more items can’t be copied to “Desktop” because you don’t have permission to read them. Do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?" I said yes, and it copied about 15G of my 17G iPhoto library. Then when I opened iPhoto most of my photos were there, except the movies from my iPhone and many (but not necessarily all) modified pictures taken from my iPhone (most often pictures that were taken landscape). The thumbnails are there, but the actual files weren't transferred, so I get the big exclamation mark.
I have now deleted the iPhoto Library folder that was only partially transferred due to the permissions and I would like to start over. Why do I not have "permission to read" certain files? I am doing the transfer via file sharing wirelessly. I have the whole HD set to be read/write by my mobileme alias. As a side note, I tried to just select the iPhoto Library for sharing but it wouldn't allow that, so I selected the whole HD.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Didn't make a difference It still says I don't have permission for some of the files. But I'm glad I got the disk repaired.
The old computer is running iPhoto '09, could that be part of the problem? We have a family pack of iLife '11 at work so right now I'm installing iPhoto '11.
Do you think that will help? Any other suggestions?
I would backup of course and try to update the iLife 09 to '11 and see if that works. I think I recall some changes in the iPhoto database from '09 to '11.
    Best of Luck!

  • Unable to copy iphoto library from external drive to internal drive

    iPhoto '09 8.1.2 (424)
I have a very large iPhoto library (282GB, 34k photos) spread between multiple computers, which as been consolidated on a single external drive now (1 TB Western Digital Mac OS Extended (Case-senstive, Journaled). I'm trying to get the big library on the external drive back on my Mac Pro so I can break the merged libraries into smaller libraries in a safe fashion.
There is nothing on the internal drive, but I keep getting an error about 62GB into the copying that reads: "You cannot copy "[Library Name]" to the destination because its name is the same as the name of an item on the destination, except for the case of some characters." ... But there's nothing on the internal drive!!!
I've renamed the library on the external drive, then tried copying it -- no dice. I've created a new folder on the internal drive and tried copying it to the new folder -- same error at exactly the same spot in the transfer. I've even reformatted then zeroed out the internal drive -- same error, same spot. Anyone know a solution or have ideas about what I'm doing wrong?
    Many thanks!

I think the error report is bogus and the issue is not on the receiving volume but a locked or damaged file within the library.
Try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair Library permissions.
FWIW, I don't see what you gain by a: splitting the library at all and b: copying it back to the MacPro to do it.

  • Copying iPhoto library to new iMac

I got my new 27" iMac today (yeah!) and am in the process of moving things over from my old iMac, including my iPhoto library. I am following the instructions here - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4063828?start=0&tstart=0 - to do that and the first part involving making a copy of my iPhoto library on my old machine into a public folder went smoothly.
Next I tried to copy the iPhoto library from the public folder to my new computer's picture folder via home sharing and got the error message "Items can't be copied to Pictures because you don't have permission to read them."
Any ideas how I can fix this problem?
    Thanks,
    JK

I tried the direct drag solution and I'm getting the same message back. From digging around the web it appears it may have something to do w/ the fact that the two computers have different versions of iPhoto '11 running. My new computer is running 9.4.2 and the old is running 9.2.3. Both are updated so I'm guessing the difference in versions has to do w/ me running Mountain Lion on the new computer and Snow Leopard on the old one.
Still open to any ideas folks have for solving this issue,
    JK
