Different appearance of Nikon D600 RAW in Aperture 3.4.5 vs Nikon View NX2

Hi all, here's a question/statement of an issue with Aperture 3.4.5 processing of Nikon D600 RAW images, appears the same with both Raw Camera 4.08 and 4.07 support versions.
I'm stating that something is incorrect in Aperture's Calibration of Nikon D600 Raw images, it's not a preview or color profile issue. Exporting the original unprocessed Raw image from Aperture and ViewNX2 clearly look different. Pictures to be provided below.
The issue is present in Saturated, or close to washed out, regions of the original image. The JPEG preview looks the same as the image in Nikon ViewNX2 but as soon as Aperture has generated its own preview the image looks quite different, and, in my humble opinion, outright incorrect. My closest guess is some sort of issue in the curves handling pixel values in the extended range. The pictures below was original taken in 14-bits per component, I shall try out how 12-bits work out.
At this point I'm not able to figure out any adjustment or fine tuning of the image to make it look like the original as seen in JPEG preview and Nikon ViewNX2.
The image below is a JPEG exported from Nikon ViewNX2, no adjustments were made. The image looks just like the JPEG preview within the original RAW image. Note the graceful transition from red-ish to yellow and fully saturaded (white) sun.
Now compare the image above with the one below, which is the same image but first imported to Aperture, then exported as JPEG without any modifications. There is clearly some weird banding occurring and there is no longer a graceful blend into the fully saturated sun.
I'm not really able to explain this in any other way than really high values, possibly in the extended sRGB range, is not handled correctly, which should be the way Nikon ViewNX2 deals with it. To the best of my knowledge, no automatic adjustments have been made in Aperture.
Hope someone has a tip to repair this or that there's a fix for it somewhere.
I can provide original Raw and/or higher resolution versions upon request.
Thanks / Patric

Thanks :-)
I've seen some posts and discussions about Raw Processing and that all software naturally do some things different. Nikon and Canon will have the Ace on their hands as they know what the cameras really do. Although the NEF (Nikon Raw) format is proprietary I expect Apple, and Adobe, do have agreements to give them some SDK or specs so they can read it.
That said, the artefact shown seems more incorrect than a different flavor. The banding cannot be resolved with any traditional adjustments. So, I'd be happy if anyone could
a) Provide some tips on how to work with Curves or some other Adjustment to resolve this.
b) Confirm they also have similar problems and if they managed to resolve it.
c) Some Apple support tech could pick this up and follow-up internally.
best regards

Camera Raw 7.3 is available for PSE 11.

  • Nikon D600 Raw support?

Why is it taking so long to provide support for the Nikon D600 RAW files?  I love using Aperture and have established a great workflow that works for me and now i'm having to use Nikon s/w to process the files and import them back into my workflow.  This camera was announced 5 weeks ago.

    Sort of just venting.
    If it helps
You can get an idea, of the time for the raw support to be released by looking at the Apple Support Downloads  page: http://support.apple.com/downloads/.
Enter "Digital Camera RAW Support Update" into the searchfield, and you will see how frequently new raw support will be released.

  • Nikon D600 Raw File compatibility

When will LR4 be compatible with the new Nikon D600 raw files? I have LR4 now with CR 7.1 and it cannot read D600 raw files.

Jao vdL I do not need to re-read Brett's post.   Michael Garnett asked how to convert his D600 NEF files to TIFF images, and I helped him with that.
However, Lightroom 4.2 is still not the complete answer to native D600 NEF files, please read:-
    http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/10/03/lightroom-4-2-is-out-now-with-preliminary-suppo rt-for-the-nikon-d600/
Lightroom 4.2 has only preliminary support at the moment and the statement marked with an asterisk i.e :-
    * Please note that the support for Nikon D600 is preliminary and there is a minor risk that the appearance of your images may change when the final support for Nikon D600 is available in an upcoming release.
Nikon D600 owners are still waiting for the final release from Adobe for full and complete D600 NEF file support.

Nikon D3300 RAW support Aperture...any ideas if/when/how long?!?

Getting 2 different stories about what is going on would bother me too. I don't know what would take a week to test. If they are overwhelmed with work orders then they should say so.
Using your case #, I would ask for a manager. Be polite but firm. You have waited way too long on this and Apple should give you something for your troubles. There have been instances where people have gotten bags, etc where Apple screwed up. It happens in every company. Make the case that you have been out of a computer all this time.

  • I need to find the download for ACR 7.3 to use my nikon d600 raw files. i have cs5 running on macboo

i need to find the download for ACR 7.3 to use my nikon d600 raw files. i have cs5 running on macbook pro with mountain lion OS.

    Hi,
Unfortunatly the 7.x series of camera raw plugin is not compatible with photoshop cs5.
You could download the 7.4 DNG Converter and convert your d600 files to dng copies which then photoshop cs5 will open.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5568

  • I cannot read Nikon D600 raw files with CS5

I cannot read Nikon D600 raw files with CS5, I have tried Camera Raw 6.1 update but that has not worked.

Nikon D 600 will work with ACR 7.3 which needs minimum of PS CS 6  : http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
With PS CS 5, ACR 7.3 will not work.
So either you need to upgrade to CS 6 or use DNG converter to convert images to DNG format which you can open in CS 5

  • Nikon d600 raw in ps6?

i have trial of ps6 & could not open raw files from nikon d600 - note came on screen saying:  "could not complete command because the file appears to be from camera model which is not supported by the installled version of camera raw".  i know it does because i tried on friend's trial version and wanted to try myself!

Did you download the updates to Photoshop and Camera Raw?
And I hope you mean Photoshop CS6, because Photoshop 6 is pretty old.

  • Problem with NIKON D600 RAW files

I have had a new NIKON D600 for 6 months. The RAW files have worked well all this time. However, I recently took the camera in for repair. Upon its return the Adobe Essentials 11 catalague and editor no longer recognizes the RAW files created by the camera. However, those files are still recognized by the Nikon software ViewNX2. Since I use the Adobe program all the time for manipulating the files I need RAW access.
I called Nikon and they told me it must be an Adobe software problem. But the Adobe software recognized the files up the time of the camera repair.
What can I do about this?

    Hi,
How do you get the images from the card to the PSE catalog?
There are known problems when using older version of the Nikon software to download the images. Have you tried updating the Nikon software?
The D600 needs ACR 7.3. You haven't recently re-installed PSE 11 and not done the updates have you?
What version of camera raw is installed (Editor -> Help -> About Plug-in -> Camera Raw)?
Can you still open the older D600 images that you took before the camera was repaired?
What operating system are you using?

  • Reading nikon d600 raw images in elements 11?

I use a Nikon D600 and Elements 11. I can read RAW files on one computer but when I installed Elements 11 on a new computer (Win 7 prof. 64 bit) I cannot open the NEF files. The message in Photoshop is that the file is from a camera model that is not supported by the installed version of camera RAW. Well, it is compatible with version 7.1.0 that is installed on the old computer but not the new one. I have tried to download a newer version of camera raw 7.3 but this is not reflected in the photoshop plugin information. what am I doing wrong? How can I open RAW images?

You need to install Camera Raw 8.3 RC. The camera is supported in that version. And, of course, it will be supported in ACR 8.3 when it is officially released.

  • Nikon D600 raw file edit

    Hi,
Having failed to open a Raw file from my new Nikon D600 I have down loaded the trial of elements 11 but this still does not open the file.
I have seen that update 7.3 is needed and that I need to go to help / updates to select it
however when I go to help /updates it just says my system is upto date
    help

The trial may not allow automatic updates.  Do a Help / About Plug-ins / Camera Raw to see what version you have.
If you’re not already running 7.3 and automatic updates aren’t working try to download and run the installer from here:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/2011/03/keeping-photoshop-up-to-date.html#notconnected
It is possible that the installer also won’t run on a trial version but it’s worth a shot.

  • Does Apple's Nikon D600 RAW converter exaggerate reds in skin tones?

I shot a company party with a new D600 last week and upon opening the raw files, I noticed that anyone who had any kind of redness in the face (such as you get when you come inside from a cold outdoors) would turn into a lobster at the slightest increase in overall saturation (as in 5% increase for example).  I have not noticed that with my other cameras.  Just to be clear, we're talking about unprocessed raw files brought in A3 directly here.  No jpgs involved.  It was most evident on men's faces because most women had at least a little bit of makeup on and this "flare up" did not show at all.  Asian men or men who were more tanned did not show that either since there was more yellow on their faces.
Since I couldn't figure what the problem was, I opened the same raw files in Nikon ViewNX.  Although I discovered that that software in completely unusable because it is so stupendously slow, at least the files I was able to see there did not exhibit that problem at all.
I could still be some operator error but I think I have eliminated most of the variables so I wonder if anyone else noticed that.
    Thank you
    Bo

For me it has always happened only with JPGs.  Camera is immaterial.  I went through extensive trouble-shooting with an NEC technician; ended up replacing computer-to-monitor cable and changing a system-wide color setting.  I'll be looking at this soon.
I _don't_ see this with Sony RAW files (a77, a900, a850).  I _don't_ see this on my MBP's Retina screen.  I see it on my NEC wide-gamut monitor.  I have another NEC monitor, but haven't had a chance to test that yet.
For me it recurred when I started using a not-mainstream editing program.  My _guess_ (no more, and why I'm not naming the program) is that this is relying on / activating an out-of-date-but-still-present part of the OS's color system.
You symptoms are (seemingly) identical.  Keep in mind that the causes could be completely different.  Scan the forum for posts about issues with the D600.

  • Nikon 1 Raw(Nef) - Aperture

    Hello,
after importing Black/White Photos into Aperture,
the Photos are converted in color.
    Why?

Have you done the Black&White conversion using in-camera setting?  That will not show for the RAW image in Aperture. Aperture will only show the RAW image developed from the sensor data and ignore any in-camera tags.

  • Can't open Nikon D600 Raw Files

I have installed my second copy of PS CS6 on my laptop. Update says everything is up to date, but the D600 files won't open. (They do on my desktop.) I tried a manual uplaod of ACR 7.3 (couldn't see 7.4 which is out there.) Installation failed. What next?

Nobody can say anything with some system info. as a start, run the Creative Suite Cleaner Tool, reinstall PS and try again.

  • Aperture D600 Raw Files too dark?

Is anyone else seeing that their Nikon D600 raw files stink in Aperture? I realize that Apple backwards engineers Raw support but if I look at a file from my D600 on Aperture and Capture NX2, the difference is 10-fold. I can see detail in the shadows in the NX2 conversion and nothing but black in the Aperture conversion. I have never seen this much of a disparity and I have used well over a dozen different DSLR's. I am curious if anyone else is seeing this? I mean in one image I can see a staircase in the NX2 conversion and nothing but black in Aperture?

"Neutral" on the camera means nothing.  Those control the JPEG previews only and do not affect RAW files.
Yes I know. However, that JPEG preview is what you see on the back of the camera so having all parameters set to as little post-processing as possible will help give you a more accurate preview of the Raw file. I will give you some more background... Our first DSLR was a Canon 10D. This was before Aperture v1.0. We moved to a 20D, a 30D, a 40D, switched to Nikon and used a D80, 90, 300, 300s, 7000, and 600. I have photographers whose files I process that included Fuji (yikes!), Canon 7D, 5D, & 5DMII. Haven't had a Sony camera yet. I started with Aperture v1 and am now using the latest Aperture release. I have a very good understanding of the process.
@ funkcanna, thanks. I haven't used a D4 but it is good to hear I am not going crazy! Yes, the files just go to crap when you click on one. I too hope this is not a sign of things to come... I really don't like Lightroom but for now, I have no choice.
