Difficulty sharing screen--grayed out
I set my mother-in-law up with a Mac Mini so that I could troubleshoot problems when she needed help. The ability to share screens via iChat is the main way we want to do this.
But when we were both on iChat, the ability to share her screen was grayed out. Under her video menu, "Screen Sharing Enabled" is grayed out.
Anyone have any idea what the problem might be? I can successfully share screens with others.
Is it an issue with the Mac Mini? Is a video camera and microphone required to share screens?
A Camera or Mic is not required to Screen Share although the Screen Sharing in iChat does include an Audio feed.
I have tried turning Off Share Screen option then selecting Microphone Enabled which in fact then Disables it. I can still turn On Screen Sharing again.
There is also a Show Audio (Video) Status (in the View Menu) which turns the Buddy Video and Audio icons Off. But these do not seem to effect things either.
Does she have System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming set at 1.5Mbps ?
She will need to Restart iChat if she has to change.
Having said this, in Leopard if left at Automatic, iChat would be limited to 384k anyway which would be fast enough for Screen Sharing.
At this stage I am at a bit of a loss as to a Fix per se.
I would get her to try a Restart of the computer whilst holding down the Apple Key + ALT PR keys together until she hears three start up Bongs.

10.8 server shared drive graying out - then disappearing?
Hi,
Im new to the community and would really appreciate some help !!
I have installed two servers now (different hardware) macpro towers with 10.8.2 server and after a short period of time the shared drives gray out, the disapaer from the desktop.
Users can still connect across the LAN, the hardware is definately not daulty as i have swapped with new drives and rebuilt. Software was from the App's store as download.
Is this a server 10.8 bug?
Any help appreciated
tricky1234Hi Simon,
Thanks for the reply.
Its the hard drive on the server its self that is disapearing, so when you are on the server screen the "work" hard drive (which is independant to the sysem HD) is dispappearing. This is happening on two server on two different locations and networks - all the hardware is 100% and the LAN users can still connect to the server share and copy and save.
The issue is on the server its self. The drive disappears and not even viewable in the finder - only way to access it is via "go" - "go to folder".
In disk utility the drive is there and is indicatig its mounted but its not !!!.....the server were both working fine for 2/3 weeks and the work drives were visable on desktop and fine, and in prefs the HD are set to be visable
Because its on two sites that are totaly indepndant the only common factor is both are running 10.8.2 server which indicates its a software / bug issue????
Hope that is clearer
Thanks again -
Hi all!
I'm having a bit of a dilemma.
My xserver seems to be working correctly, but isn't.
I have shares setup on and I can access them via AFP and all is working well that is on these shares.
But, when I startup WorkGroup manager, either remotely or on the server, Sharing is grayed out.
When I startup Server Admin, it errors out and tells me all the services failed on that server.
I've run all updates on the server and have rebooted it.
I'm able to ping the IP, the DNS name and the cname of the server. I can mount the server via IP, DNS name or cname.
All other servers on the same subnet are working just fine.
Does anyone have any clues as to what is going on?
Thanks in advanced!Firewalls are set at the routers.
I just checked my logs and I'm getting servermgrd crash report. I'm thinking I should start there. I've copied one of the log entries if it is of use to anyone in helping me figure out what is going on.
Thank you!!!

Why is Messages screen sharing icon grayed out?
Trying to do remote screen sharing with my mom's Mac using the new feature in Yosemite.
If you're not familiar with it, the new method does not require AIM, Jabber, etc and is independent of screen sharing settings in System Preferences (per Messages Help).
The procedure is:
In the main Messages window, select the name of the person you want to share with or, if you haven't previously exchanged messages, do so now.
Click 'details' on the right of the top bar of the main window.
In the menu that pops up, there are three icons: screen sharing, video chat, and audio chat/phone call. Click the screen sharing icon and send a request.
Today, my mom signed into her Messages account and we successfully exchanged iMessage messages (not SMS).
When I clicked 'details' the screen sharing and phone call icons were grayed out (or, more accurately, 'blued out' - they were a fainter shade of blue).
I clicked another name in the Conversations list and then clicked back to my mom's name. When I clicked 'details' this time, the screen sharing icon was no longer grayed out, so I sent a request to share her screen. She didn't receive the request, so I canceled it.
When I clicked on 'Details' again, the screen sharing icon was grayed out again. As far as I know, nothing had changed on my mom's end.
What could cause the screen sharing icon to be grayed out? And what could cause it to toggle back and forth between grayed out and normal?
Both computers are running the latest version of Yosemite, 10.10.3. Mine is a 2009 Mac Pro 8-core with 16 GB RAM, hers is a MacBook Pro from around 2012 or 2013.
Thanks!
BobHi,
(He did say that he'd heard that due to changes in Google's system that their accounts no longer work with Messages.)
What he has heard and what are true are two different things
Logged in Google account
There are issues with Messages using SSL to login to the Google Talk server and Google saying SSL is Less Secure (there is a setting to Enable Less Secure apps like Mail that also uses SSL and Messages).
Some people find that 2 step Verification cannot be set at Google's Account settings if your want to use the Less Secure Apps setting.
1. I deleted my AIM account from Messages and had my mom do the same. The result is that we each only have two items in the Accounts window of Messages: an iMessage account (signed in with our Apple IDs) and a Bonjour account.
2. Clicking on the Details menu, the screen sharing icon was available for both of us. It was not grayed out.
This is using two different Methods of Screen Sharing in Messages (It is silly it has two but there we go)
For AIM use the Buddy List and the icons at the bottom or highlight the Buddy and use the Buddies Menu
DO NOT USE the Details option.
For iMessages start text chat then use the Detail Option an NOT THE BUDDIES Menu.
For the iMessages Method you have to Enable System Preferences > Sharing > Screen Sharing to allow the App to be Invoked.
(It is like FaceTime is invoked but only works to Macs)
As you mention the Connection Doctor only refers to the older "iChat Method for Aim and Jabber and Bonjour - if you can Video you should be able to Screen Share with that method.

IPhoto sharing command grayed out
I am running a brand new 20" Intel iMac with Leopard 10.5.1. I successfully initiated video chat with my brother's MacBook running Tiger. I successfully put up PDF's and JPG's on his screen by dragging them onto the video window or using the "Share a File With iChat Theater" command.
However, I couldn't access the "Share iPhoto With iChat Theater" command. It is permanently grayed out. My brother thought it was because he was not on Leopard, but this doesn't make sense to me. Even when I am not chatting with anyone, the "Share a File With iChat Theater" command is black but the "Share a File With iChat Theater" command is grayed out.
It seems like iChat doesn't recognize that I have iPhoto '08 installed. I did manually install iPhoto '08 off the Apple installation discs after doing an clean install of the whole system (Leopard was not pre-installed). iPhoto '08 has been working great on its own. But I can't access it from iChat.
Anyone else experiencing this problem?
JasonMore follow-up, since I have seen this discussed a lot in other threads... I just chatted with my parents, who don't have Leopard, and was able to share photos and movies via both menu commands and drag and drop. On their screen, the images filled the screen and the small window remained with their own video feedback. On my screen, their video filled the screen and the images I was presenting filled the small window. So, this tells me that without Leopard on both the sending and receiving sides, you don't get the side-by-side iChat Theater presentation.
I also went to the Apple Store at the mall and played with iChat Theater on two Leopard laptops. When I shared any image or video, the video feedback of myself disappeared and was replaced by the shared content on a large angled window. The incoming video from the other party went into the small angled window at the bottom left. However, the other party saw both me (in the small angled window) and the shared content (in the large angled window), just like in Steve Jobs' presentation. What's more, I was able to continue running special effects, including background effects, while sharing content. In other words, the other party could see the shared video in the large window and the special effect video of me in the small window, simultaneously. Powerful stuff.
When I was chatting with my parents, though, I was not able to run the background effects simultaneously while sharing content. The normal special effects (Twirl, etc) were available, but the other two pages of effects didn't even show up in the Effects window. Clearly, there is some dynamic throttling of capability going on in the app, just as others have suggested.
Finally, I would note that, at some point at the Apple Store, I could no longer get the shared content to go into the side-by-side Theater mode. I could still share content, either through menu commands or through drag and drop, but it would always fill the screen. I brought an employee over and he played around for a while looking for a toggle switch, but to no avail. I figured it was a memory problem and suggested restarting iChat. When we did that, it fixed the problem and the side-by-side Theater mode was restored for images, videos, Keynote presentations, etc.
I thought these were some very interesting experimental results that gave me better insight into the behaviors of iChat Theater. Hopefully someone else can benefit from this information.

Why is the App screen grayed out?
I click on my device (iphone) in Itunes and when I go to the App screen it is all grayed out and I can't do anything in there??
Yes, it's checked as it's how I left it when I was able to edit the page before...now the whole tab is just grayed out and I can't check or uncheck anything. Nothing happens. So frustrated...thanks for any help or suggestions. I have multiple devices on my account and this is the only one that this is happening with when I connect to iTunes. Ugh!

Safari screen grayed out and doesn't function. Help.
Suddenly, the Safari browser stopped working. The screen appears grayed out and touching buttons in the Safari content area doesn't do anything. The search and address windows work and new pages load, but they don't function. The back and forward and other buttons also don't work.
I haven't changed anything (that I know about)since the last time everything worked a few minutes ago.
TIA for your help.Have you tried resetting the iPad?
reset iPad. Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the
Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. -

Problems with safari screen grayed out unable to load pages from search
Using IPAD last night and did a google search and google suggestions dialog box remains open along with keyboard, does not allow me to select any search results as the page is grayed out. When I try to select a new page, bookmarks of the back arrow I get NO RESPONSE. Thought the IPAD I charged it last night with same results this AM. Any suggestions!
NatouliaSome websites do this but I have found that the iPad is not frozen, it's just the way the website is (poorly) designed and you just need to scroll ALL THE WAY UP to see the page results. Verizon is one such culprit with their site. Try it, I bet it works

Why is my app screen grayed out?
When I have my updated (4.3) iTouch connected and I am looking at iTunes, why is my app screen gray and non-clickable? I can access every other page (music, tv shows, etc) but not apps?
I must be doing something wrong, right?Got it I had restrictions enabled on my iTouch - to keep my toddlers from inadvertently purchasing apps.

IMovie '09 has all sharing options grayed out
My sister has been working on a video project, and she's been having a bunch of problems (can't add text, edits don't save, etc.) I decided to try exporting the entire movie and then re-importing to add text. Unfortunately, the entire "Share" menu is grayed out. Other things (like Project Properties, Duplicate, and Move to Trash) are grayed out as well.
I have not been hanging over her shoulder while she does this, so I can't give detailed information on what may have caused it. She is not an administrator and has very little computer knowledge. I have an iMac (Early 2008) with iMovie '09.
What can I do?IT sounds like she is working with an Event, which is the source footage. She needs to start a project and drag clips from the Event into the Project. Then the Share menu will be active, you can add titles, etc.

Why is one of my dual screen grayed out when in full screen mode on the other?
I just added a second monitor for an extended desktop. When I go into full screen mode on one the other greys out. Is there a way to fix this or am i stuck? thanks!!!
No that is just the way it is. Apple still can't figure out how to do full screen apps. When you put any app into full screen mode it make a second desktop to run that app on. When that happen the second monitor, in a dual monitor setup, has nothing to do as everything is on the main monitor in different desktops.
You'll have to just expand the app to the max window size instead of going into full screen. Then you can drag/place different apps on each monitor. -
In all programs, screen grays out after I type 11 character
It acts as if I am on a different page. I have to click on the page again to continue typing. Very annoying
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. Leopard iChat Screen Sharing Grayed out
Hi there-
I'm experiencing an issue with the new "Share my screen" feature of Leopard OS X 10.5. I've been able to successfully establish a connection with two other people in both directions (letting them control my screen, and controlling their screen), however have had issues connecting to my father (whom, of course, would be the most useful to have the feature with for support/troubleshooting).
Basically, in iChat the option to request control of his screen is grayed out when I attempt to connect to him. On his end, his option to share his screen is grayed out. Interestingly, my option to share my screen with him is available and he can request control of my screen, but it never actually connects.
Are there any firewall ports that need to be open on our routers? Has anyone else seen this problem?
I have an intel based 24" iMac (the white model), and he has the brand new 20" iMac.
I wasn't sure whether to post here or in the Leopard Forum, so I'll post in both.
Thanks for your help!
JoelI've done that, to both iMacs (Intel based) though i still have them grayed out. Before, when the other computer's screen sharing was turned off, and mine was on, i was able to offer him to share my screen, but once he activated his Screen sharing from the System Pref. we both are having the Screen sharing button grayed out in Bonjour and AIM Buddy List.
Any hints? much appreciated
Thanks in advance -
When selecting a photo from thumbnails the program highlights the thumbnail, but then when I select the Edit button the photo shows up for a second, then the edit portion of the screen grays out replacing the photo with a framed question mark.
The last change made to my system was to reorginize photos, creating folders, etc, using my Mac HD window. The changed structure shows the photos there, but in iPhoto some of these folders appear empty.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.9)Hi,
You have broken the golden rule of iPhoto: Never tamper with items in the iPhoto Library folder from inside the Finder. Any changes you make to the folders and files in the iPhoto Library folder break the links between your files and the iPhoto database.
Can you undo the changes you made? If so, your library might be salvageable.
Do you have a back-up library? If so, now is the time to use it.
If not, you have to create and populate a new library. You will lose your albums, keywords, books, etc. You will have your pictures and the same film rolls as before.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto. Click "Create Library."
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
If you have any questions please post back.
