Disable HTTP TRACE causes error 413 instead of 501

Hello,
Ive tried to disable the HTTP TRACE Method for a Webserver 6.0 SP5 Instance as described in the according SUN Solve document:
obj.conf:
<Object name="default">
<Client method="TRACE">
AuthTrans fn="set-variable" remove-headers="transfer-encoding"
set-headers="content-length: -1" error="501"
</Client>
(authtrans method in one line..)
After a Restart I got the following result:
telnet muwebt1sn1 80
Trying <IP-Adress>...
Connected to muwebt1sn1.
Escape character is '^]'.
TRACE http://muwebt1sn1/ HTTP/1.1
HTTP/1.1 413 Request Entity Too Large
Server: Netscape-Enterprise/6.0
Date: Tue, 20 Apr 2004 06:51:00 GMT
Content-length: 168
Content-type: text/html
Connection: close
<HTML><HEAD><TITLE>Request Entity Too Large</TITLE></HEAD>
<BODY><H1>Request Entity Too Large</H1>
A request entity is longer than the server can handle.
</BODY></HTML>Connection closed by foreign host.
I would have expected an error code 501 / Method not supported. Does anybody know what went wrong ?
Thanks
Wolfgang

Nothing went wrong. That's the expected behaviour on 6.0 SP5.

  • Fix not working to disable http trace in iPlanet 6.0 SP5

    Hello.
    I'm running iPlanet web server 6.0 SP5 on Solaris 8. A recent security compliance scan disclosed a number of vulnerabilities, among them the fact that I have HTTP TRACE enabled. I applied the fix to obj.conf described at http://sunsolve6.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-26-50603-1&searchclause=security
    stopped and restarted the server, but the TRACE did not disable. The way I test this is
    <code>
    telnet server-name http-portnum
    TRACE / HTTP/1.1
    HOST:hostname
    </code>
    Rather than generating an error (501?) as it should it comes back with
    <code>
    HTTP/1.1 200 OK
    Server: Netscape-Enterprise/6.0
    Date: Fri, 13 Aug 2004 20:31:44 GMT
    Content-length: 36
    Content-type: message/http
    </code>
    In addition if , instead of TRACE / HTTP/1.1 I use the command
    <code>
    OPTIONS * HTTP/1.1
    </code>
    I get
    <code>
    HTTP/1.1 200 OK
    Server: Netscape-Enterprise/6.0
    Date: Fri, 13 Aug 2004 20:32:03 GMT
    Content-length: 0
    Allow: HEAD, GET, PUT, POST, DELETE, TRACE, OPTIONS, MOVE, INDEX, MKDIR, RMDIR
    </code>
    So clearly it's not disabled.
    Here is a snippet of the obj.conf file showing the inserted "fix" :
    <code>
    # Sun Netscape Alliance - obj.conf
    # You can edit this file, but comments and formatting changes
    # might be lost when the admin server makes changes.

    AddLog fn="flex-log" name="access"
    </Object>
    </code>
    Can anyone suggest why this isn't working? I've beaten this one to death. Thanks. Peter.

    1) Why would TRACE and OPTION request specifying HTTP 1.0 vs. 1.1 yield such different results?
    Web Server 6.0 only implements the TRACE and OPTIONS methods for HTTP/1.1, not HTTP/1.0. This is reasonable as TRACE and OPTIONS are part of the HTTP/1.1 protocol and not the HTTP/1.0 protocol.
    In other words, TRACE is always disabled for HTTP/1.0 requests, even if you don't use the set-variable work around.
    2) Is the OPTIONS command a legitimate test of whether this fix works? If it is, has anyone managed to have the command return an "Allow:" line MINUS the TRACE?
    Nope, not in Web Server 6.0. OPTIONS will always list TRACE. (Note that in Web Server 6.1, TRACE is not as tightly integrated into the server core. As a result, OPTIONS will conditionally list TRACE in 6.1.)
    3) Has anyone managed to generate a 501 error message after specifying TRACE / HTTP/1.1 instead of 1.0?
    Nope, not in Web Server 6.0.
    4) Does this fix really work?
    I wouldn't call it a fix; it's a work around. However, it does effectively disable TRACE. The work around is a bit of a kludge, resulting in the odd 413 status code.
    The real "fix" appears in Web Server 6.1 where you can disable TRACE simply by commenting out the Service method="TRACE" fn="service-trace" line in obj.conf.

  • How to trace HTTP receiver adapter error

    Hi All,
    My scenario is to send PO details to vendor site (HTTPS URL). MY SSL configuration is complete and I have used the SSL certificates in RFC destination of type 'G'. When I test RFC destination connection, it gives me the correct response as '200'.
    This RFC destination is used in HTTP receiver adapter of XI to connect to site and post PO xml document. It is passing successfully through Integration Server, as I get success flag in 'SXMB_MONI'. But, it is not reaching our vendor's site.
    Can someone help me, with what's going wrong, or how can I trace the error.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Amit

    Hi Sadhna,
    It's a B2B scenario, where my sender is configured correctly and the receiver as well.
    In sxmb_moni, I am getting successfull status. But, it is not reaching receiver.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Amit

  • Disabling Web Server HTTP Trace/Track Method

    How is it possible to disable the Web Server HTTP Trace/Track Method under SJS 7.x?
    As per out internal Qualys Scan report:
    A Web server was detected that supports the HTTP TRACE method. This method allows debugging and connection trace analysis for connections from the client to the Web server. Per the HTTP specification, when this method is used, the Web server echoes back the information sent to it by the client unmodified and unfiltered. Microsoft IIS web server uses an alias TRACK for this method, and is functionally the same.
    A vulnerability related to this method was discovered. A malicious, active component in a Web page can send Trace requests to a Web server that supports this Trace method. Usually, browser security disallows access to Web sites outside of the present site's domain. Although unlikely and difficult to achieve, it's possible, in the presence of other browser vulnerabilities, for the active HTML content to make external requests to arbitrary Web servers beyond the hosting Web server. Since the chosen Web server then echoes back the client request unfiltered, the response also includes cookie-based or Web-based (if logged on) authentication credentials that the browser automatically sent to the specified Web application on the specified Web server.

  • Disabling the HTTP TRACE and TRACK Methods

    Greetings,
    Due to a security audit, I need to have the proxy reject requests containing the HTTP TRACE or TRACK methods. I have a proxy set up which listens on port 80 and simply redirects all requests to another proxy, which only accepts requests on 443. I thought that I would start by disabling TRACE/TRACK in the port 80 proxy. Here is a portion of my obj.conf for the port 80 proxy:
    <Object name="default">
    AuthTrans fn="match-browser" browser=".*MSIE.*" ssl-unclean-shutdown="true"
    <Client method="TRACE">
    Service fn="deny-service"
    </Client>
    <Client security="off">
    NameTrans fn="redirect" from="/" url="https://www.site.com/Site"
    </Client>
    PathCheck fn="url-check"
    ObjectType fn="block-ip"
    Service fn="deny-service"
    AddLog fn="flex-log" name="access"
    </Object>
    It seems that the server simply ignores the first <Client> tag and processes the second one. Even when I telnet to the proxy on port 80, and issue a "TRACE /" request, all it does is redirect me to www.site.com/Site. Can someone point me in the right direction here? Where is the best or proper place to intercept requests involving these methods?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Please try moving the <Client> tag to the protocol-specific object. For example:
    <Object ppath="http://.*">
    <Client method="TRACE">
    Service fn="deny-service"
    </Client>
    Service fn="proxy-retrieve" method="*"
    </Object>

  • File-to-file scenario: unable to trace cause of error

    hi
    i m new to Xi..
    i have made a file -> XI -> file scenario, with a BPM having one receive and two send steps, sending message to two receiver-business-service.
    the sender of the file is a sender-business-service, file adapter is using FTP.
    the file is being picked up, but it is not put to the two destinations.
    in SXMB_moni...i cant trace the error...
    but in the respnse xml i cant see the payload...
    pls tell me how to see where the error is.
    pls help me....coz any scenario i make the main problem i face is to trace the error(file not being put to the destination directories),

    hi sreeram and rajeev,
    this is the trace from the response xml from the sxmb_moni enrty for the message send from the BPM to the final receiver-business-service through the send step(asynchronously).

    I assume that this might be caused by applying the latest MLR patch or due to some changes on the TP side.
    Please advise

    Hi Suhas,
    Yes, no matter the size of the XML file, it always sends it 6 times. Error occurs only at the end of the process, that is after 6th time the file has been sent. We tested it many times with new messages and each time the results are identical. There is no trace in b2b.log that the file is being sent again, transport log however shows 6 http send entries each time.
    Also, between the start of sending the message and the error occurring after 2-3 minutes (after 6th message is sent) the message is not removed from the ECX outbound queue (we are getting the XML from E-Bussines). It is removed after the error. It cannot manually dequeued during that time.
    Thank you
    Kamil,

  • Yahoo mail install - HTTP Status 500 error

    I am trying to set-up a Yahoo mail account on my Bosses new Torch.
    I'm going to blackberry.com/yahoo/mail and when I click on Launch Email Setup, I get a HTTP Status 500 error.
    The error description is "The server encountered an internal error () that prevented it from fulfilling this request"
    Then it has exception for javax.servlet and root cause of java.lang.NumberFormatException and note of "The stack trace of the root cause is available in the JBossWeb/2.0.1.GA logs.
    Is this a problem on my end or on the blackberry site?
    Please advise. Thanks in advance!

    It looks like you've got a couple of different things going on
    here.
    If you want to disable http, do this in the WL properties file:
    weblogic.httpd.enable=false
    your getInitialContext should figure out what port your naming
    service is on unless you've hardcoded it to be localhost:80, true?
    I switch between ports 80 and 7001 all the time without problems.

    Hi,
    Can someone tell me how do I disable the HTTP access to
    Weblogic.
    The environment I am running on my dev machine would be
    Win2000+
    Weblogic 5.1+ SP6. I am redirecting any HTTP request to
    the secure
    port and that part is working. But I want to be able to
    completely
    disable any HTTP requests all together. Is there a way
    to do this.
    In the weblogic.properties file, if I change the weblogic.system.listenPort
    property to point to anything other than port 80, it gives
    me errors
    on the WLInitialContext. What else do I need to change
    in this
    so that I can listen on a port other than 80?
    Thanks for your help,

  • SAAJ0537: Invalid Content-Type. Could be an error message instead of a SOAP

    Hi,
    At present i am using JCAPS version 5.1.1
    com.sun.xml.messaging.saaj.SOAPExceptionImpl: Invalid Content-
    Type:text/html. Is this an error message instead of a SOAP response?
    I got above error message while invoking the webservice.
    My intention is to get HttpRequest from user and based on the input from user, a web service should be invoked. For this i am using BusinessProcess[einsight]
    In my BusinessProcess, i have HttpServer processRequest service,
    to receive HTTP requests and then i am passing the value of parameter received from http[As String] to next partner which is responsible for invoking a webservice.[Used a wsdl in client mode]
    I am able to get http request successfully , but i got error while invoking web service.
    Please let me know, what to do for rectifying error.

    Although this is an aged topic, this is plaguing our development efforts currently. I have successfully created a webservice that can be executed externally using the generated wsdl but I am unable to get a JCD to execute the WS without getting the following error:

    Installed Trend Micro Smart Surfing on new MacBook Pro and now it has caused error that won't let computer boot up.  How do I get it to a point that I can delete program?

    Try booting up in Safe mode (holding down the Shift key while booting). If the software came with an unistaller, use it to remove alll traces of the software - it's nothing that you need and, as you've experienced, can do more actual hard than good (as is the case with most software of this type). When you're booted in Safe Mode, if you can't run an uninstaller, at least check to make sure that there are no Trend Micro items that are set for automatic log in, at least.
